I got to spend some time with The Remedy. This blues duo from the Crystal Coast area offers a great mix of rockin’ blues favorites, from Jimi Hendrix to Stevie Ray Vaughan, they cover the greatest. Chris Lee Sr. plays harmonica and guitar and offers supporting vocals while his music brother Tim Rowe, offers up the blues bending riffs on guitar and lead vocals. The duo was rocking the crowd that gathered for the Dead Headz MC Anniversary Party last Saturday evening. They are available for private parties and any venue in need of a great rocking blues duo.
Rowe also keeps busy swapping chops with band mates in FAB the Band. They are a high energy party band hailing from Morehead City, NC. They have a gig tomorrow at The K Club, 177 Brandywine Blvd, Morehead City, NC, with music playing from 7-10 pm.
On Sunday, I gathered with friends and took a road trip to check out the longest running Blues Festival around the region. It was the 32nd Annual Carolina Blues Festival which offered two days of authentic blues music, right in the downtown area of LeBauer Park. The big event was on Saturday featuring many fine acts, including the Nikki Hill Blues Band closing out Day One. On day two, Davies St. remained closed and vendors lined the street outside, with a stage set on the corners of Davies and Friendly. There were more vendors and awesome causes being promoted inside the Greensboro Cultural Center as well. The weather was perfect for the day we visited.
This quartet of talented ladies gave a great show in the high heat of the day. They are a local band who have appeared at the festival over the years. They have a long history of rocking the blues and you can check them out on Facebook and keep up to speed with all their news and events.
What a refreshing afternoon, delight to delight in the sounds of your talent filling the streets with soulful music. It was a display of teachers and students from the area high school giving their best to the crowd that lined the sidewalks. I love hearing our youth offering their sounds to an audience that admires their works. On stage leading the charge was the guitar teacher, banjo professor and professional drummer assisting in the many rotations of students. They all gave a great performance. Some sang others showcased their own band without any assistance. It really is awesome to see budding talent in bloom.
Closing out my day of fun at the festival with Fairlight and Freddie and the family, we danced and got our groove on with the Gary Redd Band. These fellas were full of love and they poured it into the music they shared with the crowd. Even Fairlight had to hug Gary Redd before exiting the area. It was such a wonderful show, full of talent and great vibes.
Offering those sounds were Gary Redd front and center with a voice to welcome anyone, Bobby Pridgen on drums, Jeff McLean on guitar and Leroy Roberson on bass. They are a tight unit with lots of talent to share with the crowd. It was a fun day celebrating the blues and all good music. We even heard some rock and folk, and even a taste of reggae before the day ended.
To keep up to speed with the Gary Redd Band check them out on Facebook:
Since we have arrived alive from another grueling week of work, let’s take a minute to reflect on the fact that we have a three-day weekend…. Now let’s take another moment and remember why….! Thank you to our soldiers and servicemen who gave all for the freedoms we hold dear. You’re not forgotten in the hearts that stay grateful for your service. RIP and thank you! God Bless America! Now let’s dance:
Live tonight from 5-9 pm it is the Big Jim Blues Duo on the deck at the DoubleTree, by Hilton, 100 Middle St., New Bern, NC. The event marks the return of the deck party which was a tradition of the town for many years. Live music was so, long a part of that tradition. But for years the live music was replaced by a DJ and before long it was silenced completely. After a couple of years of peace and quiet, the managers decided to give music a try once again. We sat down and discussed budgets and concerns, and we agreed to try bringing back live music for guestx and locals alike.
Though they might not have lived here long enough to be traditional, I will tell you, when I think of the revitalization of music in New Bern, I start with this one man and his wife. Big Jim and Kathy Kohler are an awesome blues team that truly helped the now blossoming music community. They’ve hosted many open mics and offered their talents to many causes since arriving here in 2011. I met them in 2013 and have felt blessed ever since. Jim is my blues brother and his wife Kathy is a soul sista.
As many of my readers know, it is not only the DoubleTree making a comeback, but Big Jim has slowly been making his way back to health, with a long road still ahead. Come out and support this night of free music, outside on the deck and feel free to tip these players that move you.
