Tracey’s Weekend Run Around ~ August 9, 2016

On Friday, August 5, 2016; we started the evening at The Brown Pelican located at 411 Broad St., New Bern, NC; where we got to check in with Buck Loy for a little more than a set. The crowd was enjoying his guitar grooves and dancing along to all the familiar classics. If you have not had the pleasure of hearing this solo acoustic act out of New Bern, NC; you can listen to him when he plays at BruTopia in James City; located at 1201 Highway 70 E, New Bern, NC. He will be rocking that room next Friday, August 19, 2016 from 8:00 -10:30 pm

Next up we headed over the bridge not quite 1/4 of mile down Highway 70 E to Triple Play Restaurant which is actually located at 111 Williams Rd, New Bern, NC; where we caught the last set of local duo, The Kohlers’ Blissful Blues Union featuring Big Jim Kohler on guitar and his lovely bride Kathy Kohler on vocals.

The crowd was enjoying great food and good blues when I walked into the joint! They ended their set with a dedication to a couple of friends whose wedding they played. Thanks to technology, we all get enjoy their rendition of Soul Shine for John and Stephanie Hunter.

On Saturday, August 13, 2016 they will be at Mesh Sports Lounge located at 2500 Trent Rd., New Bern, NC. On Sunday, August 14, 2016, they will be in Jacksonville, performing at the Marina Cafe from 5-9 pm.

Friday was also the “locally” anticipated rock n roll moment of the Summer and when it was done,  a new trio of rockers gathered many new passengers as they left the stage at Triple Play.  The Bi-Polar Express did not disappoint the crowd that eagerly waited for the debut performance.  They held the crowd and rocked them throughout the night. This band is a lot of fun and the musicianship, truly excellent!

Bassist, vocalist and founding member Wick Wickline said he has really enjoyed this project with his two good friends,  Josh Overby on guitar and vocals and Mike Lancaster on drums and he thought their debut was a blast. He said, “It was the most fun I’ve had playing a gig within New Bern city limits!”

For anyone looking for a solid three piece rock effort for their club, private party, festival or community event give Wick a call at 252-670-5563 and book your ticket with The Bi-Polar Express today.

After a debut set of great rock classics from the 80’s and 90’s we rolled down to Beaurfort, NC where we found another solo, duo, trio combo.

Our first stop was at Cru Bar & Wine Store, a great little cafe located at 120 Turner St., Beaufort, NC where we enjoyed the fun grooves of Spencer Scholes.  After just a couple tunes solo, in walked Jon McGregor a young man and his bongo and before long the two were sharing rhythms that the crowd enjoyed.

Next up we headed over to the Dock House Restaurant where we caught a quick set of upbeat and fun beach sounds courtesy of Scearce & Kentner on guitars with special guest David Spence on the mandolin. It was a beautiful night on the water and the crowd gathered and enjoyed the grooves well into the night.

Our last stop in Beaufort, was to check in with our very own Steel Shot. When not covering the music scene, Crystal Odham and I are working on putting together an agency geared towards promoting and booking bands. TNT Entertainment will be another entity of Tracey Stones Enterprises.

The agency will be available for hire and our services include providing publicity and promotion tools, band bookings and promotions of such events. The Pamlico County duo, Steel Shot was the first band we agreed to work with back in March of this year. After a fun time of rocking to some cool grooves while shooting pool and eating great burgers, we headed down the road.

Since there was still time, we hopped in the bus and headed over the bridge yet again and caught a few rocking tunes courtesy of the Kinston based rock outfit, The Roman Sam’s. This awesome five piece rock band features Samantha Holland in the front on lead vocals, David Brown on guitar and vocals, Matthew  Hart, also on guitar and vocals; holding down the rhythms are Trey Horton on bass and Joey Gillette on drums.

I was truly  impressed with the power of this rock unit. Hollands vocals and showmanship make the band fun and easy to watch. The Roman Sam’s take on Bobby McGee

On Saturday, August 6, 2016 we packed our bags and headed west to Raleigh where we attended the North Carolina Music Awards.

The best part of the event was the pre show on the Red Carpet. I had great fun taking pictures of all the players and performers who were on hand for the ceremony. As for the ceremony itself; I personally, was disappointed by the fact that not one band performed. Now mind you there were performers, but most of them were performing to tracks, making it feel like a karaoke event. There were a few great solo performances including the youth winner Marye Amanda and a pretty good blues blues stringer who’s name I did not catch; however his performance I did capture:

There was an after show for the event at Vinnie D’s  at The Sheraton  but after we walked in and heard no live music at an event meant to celebrate live music, we took to the street and it did not take long to find live music. In fact a few feet away we found a street duo jamming for the passers by!

Our next stop brought us to Slims Downtown, where we studied the rules and enjoyed the hardcore sounds of The Everymen live on stage. They were promoting their latest  New Jersey Hardcore. They had a heavy original sound.

Our final stop on the night was at The Big Easy, located at 222 Fayetteville St,. Raleigh, NC where we thoroughly enjoy the funky sounds of Big Rick & The Bombers. They are a fun top 40 band that bring funk to life and knows how to rock souls.

After posting in my blog last week that Matt Phillips would be performing live at Rise in North Raleigh, it seemed like a great way to conclude our trip to Raleigh. We enjoyed the great sounds of his jazz and blues, sipping coffee and eating delicious donuts and breakfast biscuits.  If you have not heard this solo act from Carrboro, NC, be sure to look him up soon. He is never one to disappoint and always interacts well with his crowds.
