There’s Always Good Rockin’ at Night!

Dueling Pianos Dig Up the Diversity

If you want the Doobie Brothers, they got that! If you want a little number from Men at Work or how about Chuck Berry… or The Rolling Stones, they know what you like! There is not much the trio of two pianos does not cover. That’s right, I said the trio of two pianos! On drums is the lovely and talented Nikki Lukens and leading the charge each week her mate and band partner Tony Basford, who keeps the crowd rolling with comedy, singalongs and great renditions of any song you ask to hear.

They appear in our area twice each week. On Wednesday nights they rock Duck’s Grille and Bar, 1207 Gum Branch Rd., Jacksonville, NC, 8 – 11 pm and on Thursday nights they rock it in New Bern at Circa 1810 Bar and Restaurant at The Harvey Mansion, 221 S. Front St., New Bern, NC.

Since they first started rocking on the patio, I have seen the steady loving duo of Lukens and Basford perform with several secondary piano players. All of the performances are wonderful and fun. Be sure to catch a show soon.

Open Mic Offers Organization at The Dirty Bird

For many years there has been a weekly open mic night at The Brown Pelican, 411 Broad St., New Bern, NC. But for the first time in these many years, they are welcoming a host to the stage to organize the night each week.

Bruce Cornford and his good buddy Howie will be hosting the weekly music offering, that opens the stage to many of this towns hidden gems. In fact, I found a few diamonds sitting in on jams last week, when I stopped down to have a sample of the hosted happening!

Randy Moore was out on the town and shredding some pretty notes with his new friend visiting the area from Ontario, Canada. They gave up a great mix of blues and southern rock sounds.

Keeping it in the vein of the blues and shining like a diamond with that guitar in hand, Howard Mathews came to the stage and gave us all show. Offering energy, rawness and rugged country blues. He was fun from the moment he got up until the minute he rode away on his bicycle. What a wonderful treat it was to hear Mathews giving up his goods for those at the Dirty Bird.

The Brown Pelican hosts music three nights of live music each week starting each Thursday with their open mic event. Sign up starts at 7:30 with music playing from 8 pm until all of the players have played. It was a fun and exciting night. On Friday night they offer the best in local acoustic acts, jamming from 7-10 pm. Each Saturday night they rock you with the areas best bands, from 8-11 pm. The Brown Pelican is a private club, but pay a dollar and you are in like Flynn. Just ask at the door.

There Was a Scorpio Moon over New Bern Last Week and it Shined a Fairlight

Fairlight Moriah & The Scorpio Moon made her band debut last Friday night under the tent at Circa 1810 Bar and Restaurant at The Harvey Mansion. Helping out the featured blues singer from Colorado was Aaron Davenport on guitar and accompanying vocals, Simon Spalding on bass and fiddle, and Freddie Scungio on drums and backing vocals.

Those that gathered were treated to an entertaining night of great blues music. Fairlight Moriah is a true entertainer, who enjoys interacting with her crowd. Sitting on laps, reading palms, dancing with fans and enjoying her audience is just as much a part of her show as the music. It was fun to watch her on the stage where we all came to meet her and so many months later, with her own band of talented players.

The entertainer and singer will return to the patio next month with another set of players that are familiar faces around our talented town. Come out on Friday, May 18, 2018, to enjoy a night of authentic blues with Fairlight Moriah and the Scorpio Moon, featuring the slide work of Miquela de Leon and the backbeats of Patrick Edwards. That too will be a worthy night of music.

Hot House Quartet Gives Up Great Jazz

Hot House Quartet brought their clean jazz sounds to the Dirty Bird last week. These boys are smooth and sweet with their music offerings. On Trombone – Chris Schott, Piano – John Larson, Guitar – Harry Willard, Bass – Dan Webber and drums – Mark Gulotta. Together they offer a great mix of jazz and fusion blends. The four players are active duty Marines with three serving in Cherry Point and the drummer stationed at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, NC.

The thing about this active duty Marines band is, you never know when duty will call and members will rotate out. At press time I learned that trombone player Chris Schott was recently given orders to head across the country to set up camp in San Diego. Many great memories were made in this town while he was here. Let’s all keep him and all his Marine Music Brothers in our thoughts and prayers. My heart is full of gratitude for all they do for us.

This by no means is the end, however for the band. In fact, Schott tells me there is a great sax player coming to the front lines to cover his position. It will be interesting to hear the new sounds of sax blending with the keys, drums, and bass.
