Music Benefits Offer More Than One Benefit For The Blogger

On the Scene With Tracey Stones

One of the best parts of writing this blog has been getting to know so many people around the state. Along the way and with time, I have become a resourceful contact for anyone who is in need of entertainment. Though I have no real interest in making a living from booking bands, it does account for most of the earned income for Tracey Stones Productions, LLC.

Craven Arts Council/Bank of the Arts presents an annual concert series At The Gallery. This series highlights famed singer-songwriters and such as Otis Redding, which was last month. Bob Dylan will be featured next month on December 1, 2018 and this month Carly Simon. It was just before Halloween when John Burger reached out looking for a performer to cover the performance.

The originally scheduled artist for the November show had to cancel due to injury and Burger hoped for the show to go on. It took me about ten minutes to come up with a name. Local singer-songwriter in her own right Marron Chaplin, a rock powerhouse. I know her music falls into a different genre than Simon’s, but I thought for sure she could do this.

Marron Chaplin Gives First Piano Concert of Career

To Sell Out Crowd Saturday Night

When I first reached out to Chaplin with the opportunity, she took a minute to consider the idea. After being presented the opportunity she discussed it with her biggest fan, her mom, and after some more consideration accepted the challenge. And a challenge it was. Chaplin is well versed in rock music and leans on the side of being a hard rocker at that.

Regardless of genre preference, I also knew she was a skilled and professional player. What I did not know when I reached out to the performer was, that she was honing her skills on the piano and was excited to hear that the Gallery had a piano for the performance. Following her commitment to the gig, the young mom buckled down and learned a variety of songs from Carly Simons song catalog. She offered a two-hour performance with a brief intermission in between sets.

She interacted with the audience while she fought off her nerves in between songs and opened her mind to the opportunity of grander gigs with more attentive audiences. Fact is a show at the Gallery is nothing like a more routine gig at a bar. She did great, pulling off the show with sheer talent and grace. Here is one of the selections she shared with the audience with her baby blue six-string in hand. A guitar she named after her Grandmother, Evelyn.

For fans and friends of the entertainer, you can find her rocking around town this weekend. On Friday she will be on stage and rocking The Thirsty Bruin, 224 Middle Street, New Bern, NC, with free music being offered from 8-10:30 pm. On Saturday night she will be opening the night at the Brown Pelican, 411 Broad St., New Bern, NC, offering tunes from 8-10 pm.

Carolina Lily Fest 2018 at The Brown Pelican Took Place on Saturday

The good people at GEM Productions teamed up with Folks Journal, will present the 4th Annual Carolina LilyFest 2018 at The Brown Pelican on Saturday, November 17, 2018.

The evening offered five acts, including New Bern’s Family Band Strung Together opening the event at 5 pm. Mandy Mears, Sometimes Lions, Batts, and Crystal Bright all offered their talents and time for this wonderful event, that raised money for our area’s Coastal Women’s Shelter. Along with great entertainment, there were awesome items donated for a silent auction and a 50/50 drawing. The Coastal Women’s Shelter is a nonprofit that helps families live free from domestic violence.

Gabrielle Christie and Her New Project Batts debuts at LilyFest 2018

When I first met Gabrielle Christie she was a shy teenager playing in a bluegrass band. She sort of blended into the stage set playing her guitar and giving up the spoons and fiddling with the mandolin while singing back up. The band was Merchant’s Road. About a year and a half later, we saw her on stage as the singer/bass player for the original rock band Barefoot Monty. That band had a great stint and released on 5 track EP about a year after they banded together. In fact, the band played the day show at BTM’s this summer for GEM Productions’ Bernaroo Music and Arts Festival.

Since then, she has grown into her own and is becoming a music force we all need to spend some time listening to. She is now working out her music offering with a new bands call Batts. This duo features Christie front and center offering vocals, guitar, and bass on her own efforts. Batts is going to make a great impression on the New Bern music scene.

New Bern Meets Crystal Bright & The Silver Hands

Like with each annual event, the night closes out with a headliner from out-of-town. This year’s finale was offered by a hauntingly talented duo, that of combines the musical energies of Crystal Bright and Jeremy Haire. As per the band bio, we learn that  “Crystal Bright is an Indie singer/multi-instrumentalist, composing music steeped with dark cinematic twists and international musical influences and has played over 1000 shows across the world since 2010.” The fun and mystical singer-songwriter offered a great closing set to fans, that filled the Pelican for the great night of music and making fun for The Coastal Women’s Shelter.

The band has several releases and you can find them on many social media sites, including Facebook and Reverbnation.  They have a couple of gigs on the calendar worth noting. To check out their merchandise and show dates you can check out the website at:

Behind the Scenes With Tracey Stones

I just have to give a shout out to Crystal Bright and Jeremy Haire for making the choice to come to New Bern, in spite of the fact that their car broke down en route to the gig. The duo got towed into town from Goldsboro, NC so to perform for the charity event. Following the show, I called AAA to try to get them a tow truck home. Given the late hour and distance, it seemed impossible to find a truck willing to take the trek to Chapel Hill at 2 am. The following morning we met in the parking lot and out of the blue, I asked Bright to turn the engine. The car cranked and I followed them well out-of-town, just about nearing Dover.

Of course, just as I was coming back into New Bern, she reached out and told me the car died and they were stuck again, in LaGrange. With that, I doubled back and carried on through Kinston, where I met them in LaGrange and once again called AAA. Parker Millar, came to the scene to collect the passengers; getting Haire and Bright back to town before Haire was due at work. The guitarist makes a living running sound at the famed Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro.

Fact is, they could have been towed back to Chapel Hill when they were on their way, but being the professional players they are, they made the gig with minutes to spare and worried about their fate later. These behind the scenes stories are the best parts of this life. Big thanks to A+ Towing for recovering the vehicle and returning it safely to Chapel Hill.

The Weekend Ends With A Benefit for Pamlico County Middle School

The most beneficial shows for a blogger is a benefit with many bands. This is always my favorite kind of event to cover. Last weekend I ended the week on a good note with great music and all for the sake of raising money for Pamlico County Middle School.

Following the wrath of Hurricane Florence in September the children of this school have been displaced with their school rendered unsafe. In an effort to raise the funds needed for the repairs, Pamlico County High School Band Director and Educator, Mr. James Durham put together a benefit which took place in the AH Hatsell Auditorium at Pamlico County High School.

When he is not busy sharing knowledge with students, Durham can be heard swapping notes with any number of area bands. In fact, the sax player performed with four out of the five bands that were on the bill last Sunday, November 18, 2018, for the event he organized, Band Together For Hurricane Relief to Fix PCMS.

I invite you to come back tomorrow to hear all about the bands that played for the worthy cause. Before we go, I will leave you with the last song of the night. The hard-working Hank Barbee ran sound all day, including for his band The Dust Parade who ended the show!

My Grateful Heart

After three years of dedicating myself to the local, live music scene you have shown me my work is important and gave me the inspiration and help to fuel the mission further with your generous contribution. On this, the Eve before Thanksgiving, I want you all to know how grateful I am for each and every one of you who help me keep the dreams alive. We are not only giving my dreams a life, but we are keeping a light shining on the superstars that rock us every weekend. Those entertainers work hard and I like working equally as hard trying to cover as much as I humanly can.

Since the night before Thanksgiving is generally one of the biggest bar nights of the year, I decided that publishing tonight was much needed and necessary for those looking for the music tonight.

Keeping the Beats in New Bern Last Night We Find Some Soul Boogie, Party People and Talented Stringers

On The Scene With Tracey Stones

44877913_10217426494841078_3663059185920114688_n.jpg

Keeping the beats close to home last night, it seems when you ride around in a vehicle with nearly 400,000 miles, sometimes it is wise to stay close to home base. Lucky for me, we live in New Bern, NC and that means plenty of music options for your weekend fun.

Caffeinated Soul Boogie

Last night I started things off in James City, where I stopped by BrÜtopia, to enjoy the sounds of the New Bern based band known as Caffeinated Soul Boogie. They offered their grooves last night from 7-10 pm, to a packed house of onlookers and listeners. This local act features a father and daughter duo, that has expanded to become a full band with great songs to share. Making the music is singer Darria Yeager, who has the voice of an angel, her father Derrick Moore plays the guitar
Javier Sinobas is the one offering the bass notes while Tanner Bright keeps the beats.

In addition to the sweet sounds they make, the band welcomed local blues legend Bob Clyde to the stage, to help out with some harmonica parts. It was a great night of music and keeping beats. The crowd was enjoying the food being served by Nest Cafe and the beer brewed right there at BrÜtopia.

To get familiar with this fun area band that offers a mix of folk, Americana and blues music be sure to check out their band page on Facebook:

Spare Change Offers the Party Grooves

I can’t tell you how many times I have come close to seeing this next band. But let me just say, it has been more than a few times that I just missed the rocking sounds of Spare Change. In fact, it happened just weeks ago. My case in point, they rocked the morning away at the Amped Up for Youtilities event in Morehead City. They were finishing up their last song when I was rounding the corner and making my way to the stage.

Last night, however, the LaGrange based band rocked the night away on the back deck at Blackbeard’s where plenty of people joined the fun. Making the grooves come to life in this popular band are Jordan Rouse, guitar and vocals, Jeff Morris in the back behind the kit; Veronica Wall upfront and leading the vocals. I am unclear on who is holding down the bass, and who rocked the other guitar, but all in all this band is a lot of fun.

The draw here of course is, they play songs that bring us back to when life was carefree and fun. They play popular songs that we all know and love, and many that make us want to dance. Tonight the band has a gig lined up at The Deck at River Twist. The band will be rocking the popular grooves tonight from 8:30-11:30 pm. To keep up with the beats of this band, be sure to visit their website by clicking this link:

Kristie Lynn Brings It To The Brown Pelican

Here again is another artist that I have been hoping to catch for some time. I rather enjoy her live video feeds on Facebook and she is familiar to many around town. Kristie Lynn hails from Wilmington, NC and offers friends and fans an acoustic show with great favorites, familiar to most. Along with that, she is a talented singer-songwriter with a list of songs she has composed. She plays her songs throughout the Downeast region and you can keep up with the busy artist by liking her Facebook page:

Catch up with New Bern’s own Parker Millar, this Sunday at 10 pm and listen for when he spins their latest release, “Karma.”

Genre: Funk
Location: New Orleans, LA

George Porter, Jr. is best known as the bassist of The Meters, along with Art Neville, Leo Nocentelli and Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste. The group was formed in the mid 60’s and came to be recognized as one of the progenitors of funk then called R&B. The Meters disbanded in 1977 but reformed in 1989. Today the original group still plays the occasional reunions but the Funky Meters, of which Porter and Neville are still members, most prominently keeps the spirit alive.

Few bass players in the history of modern New Orleans music are as storied as George Porter Jr. During the course of a career spanning more than four decades, Porter has not only made a deep impression with his work in The Meters, but he’s notched session work with artists as diverse as Paul McCartney, Jimmy Buffett, David Byrne, Patti LaBelle, Robbie Robertson, Tori Amos, Taj Mahal, Ryan Montbleau and live performances with Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Warren Haynes, John Scofield, Steve Kimock, Eric Krasno (and including recent studio releases with Warren Haynes and Bill Kreutzmann) just to name a few.

Porter is also the bandleader of his own unique long-term project the Runnin’ Pardners. He has assembled some seasoned and talented musicians to join him on this project. Familiar Pardners – Brint Anderson (guitar) and, Michael Lemmler (keyboards) and rising stars on the New Orleans music scene Khris Royal (saxophone) and Terrence Houston (drums). George Porter Jr. plans to keep a smile on his face.” I feel like I am working towards something that will be remembered.”

Today, Porter features that epic bottom end in his latest ventures with his own band the Runnin’ Pardners.

FLOW TRIBE

Genre: Funk/Rock/Psychedelic/Blues
Location: New Orleans, LA

Few bands arouse a crowd into a collective shake like Flow Tribe. The six-member band’s onstage chemistry reflects a seamless combination of soul and movement, that hits the audience within the first few notes. Virgin listeners and avid fans alike are drawn in by the distinctive sound that feels both familiar and original. Outfitted for each performance in colorful, carefully selected suits, it’s clear their focus is sharp and the party has begun. This is the work of professional musicians who’ve found their passion and are living a dream where everyone’s welcome.

Second line brass and Cuban-Caribbean rhythms meld with R&B, soul, rock, and hip-hop beat, in high-energy performances that turn every show into a celebration. New Orleans has influenced itself, the unparalleled free and easy city weaving its way into track after track of original scores, that make up a single definition of sound, which Flow Tribe has dubbed “backbone-cracking music.”

K.C. O’Rorke (vocals, trumpet), John-Michael Early (harmonica, washboard, vocals, keyboard), Russell Olschner (drums), Chad Penot (bass, vocals), Bryan Santos (guitar, timbales), and Mario Palmisano (guitar) are native New Orleanians and high school pals, who’ve been writing music and playing live shows since the band’s inception in 2004. Post-graduation they went their separate ways, but after Katrina each returned to their hometown, inherently becoming active members in the rebuilding of a community that’s stronger than ever. Flow Tribe may well be the city’s next music ambassadors.

NOVEMBER 17, 2018 · SATURDAY * 8PM * $25 SEATED / $20 STANDING

Juke Joint at the Edge of the World is the eleventh studio release from esteemed singer-songwriter Randall Bramblett, a multi-instrumentalist musician with a career spanning four decades. Highly sought-after for his creativity, as both a collaborator and skilled touring sideman, the legendary Georgian’s talent has earned him the respect of his peers and many of rock’s finest luminaries. While having shared stages with artists such as Steve Winwood, Bonnie Raitt, The Allman Brothers, and Widespread Panic, among others, it’s Bramblett’s own career as frontman where his artistry is truly on full display.

Deep into the self-described second act of his solo career, Bramblett aims to recreate the literature of the blues with music about nowhere people in nowhere lands. Conjuring equal parts Tom Waits, William Burroughs, and hallelujah chorus, his music again comes alive with this new collection of songs. With a commitment to the story of his characters and the necessary mutation of music, Bramblett has kept his solo career as fresh as the day it began.

This evolving engine of creativity is due, in large part, to the familiarity and bond shared with his band mates.

Come out for a special night of music and enjoy the great food too.

We Visit Oriental, New Bern and Swansboro for Music Fun

On the Scene With Tracey Stones

23561563_733117523566098_6781764840997512963_n.jpg

There were many good times to be had last weekend and I found a few worth talking about on my journey of chasing music. Not only was there music here in town, but also it was found in a few coastal towns along the way, as well. In fact, I kicked things off in Oriental and closed things out in Swansboro, NC.

Pickin’ the Blues and Pouring Brews and Raising Funds

We start things off where we last left off. Which means on Saturday afternoon, it was off to Oriental where Big Jim Kohler offered his blues for the school! Pamlico Community College Foundation hosted a fundraiser at The New Village Brewery, where they poured pints and raised money throughout the day for future scholarships, for the students attending the community continuing education center.

Many turned out to enjoy the free pizza, home-brewed beer, and good blues. Inside they had a room set up with items for a silent auction. They offered artwork, posters paintings and so much more.

Before the night ended Foundation president, Michelle Noevere offered a few words about the importance of the Foundations work, in providing funds for books and supplies to students in need. Also speaking on behalf of the work done by the foundation was a student benefiting from the scholarship.

Mid Week Blues Is Now a Thing

As for Big Jim and his blues, the man has been staying busy since his recovery from a serious bout with pneumonia last year, that sobered the six string player right up! After boozing and bluesin’ for a lifetime, the song maker is now sharing his blues with a sober mind, a gleam in his eyes. With each show, Kohler openly shares the mastery of his craft with grace and flow.

Today the Big Jim Kohler Band is Big Jim on guitar and vocals, his wife, Kathy Kohler offering vocals,  Chris Buttita on bass and Tom Parker on drums. They have been working out songs since they came together this past Summer and seem to have a lot of fun picking the blues together!

You can come and check out the band each Wednesday night at City Stage, 901 B Pollock St, New Bern, NC. Moving forward the band will be opening each Wednesday evening with a two-hour dinner set from 7-9 pm. Following the dinner show, the open jam will begin. Opening the stage to all friends and players that enjoy jamming with Jim, this is your invitation to joining the Big man in the weeks ahead.

Marron Chaplin Debuts at City Stage

When I got back to town last week, I headed over to check in with Marron Chaplin. She was setting up for her debut show at the City Stage. So I wanted to be on hand to go live when she got started, in the hopes that more people would come to see her performance.

For those who are not familiar with the NYC based player with a strong voice and guitar skills to match, she is currently calling New Bern home base and is enjoying life as a mom to her young daughter. These days the singer-songwriter spends her days at home, enjoying her daughter and learning new music. Her days of taking time off from music are coming to an end, as the new mom is ready to roll with more new music for her awaiting fans.

You can support the artist by checking out her latest recording project. One she is happy to personalize for you, her fan! To read more and sign up to support her music follow this link:

Support Local Artist ~ Marron Chaplin

I presented the music maker with a challenge a few weeks ago, which she graciously accepted. Tomorrow night she will be offering a two-hour program of Carly Simon music during a performance at Bank of the Arts. Tickets for the show at $20 for member and $25 for non-members. Stairwell Heats Up the Deck with Hot Rock Music!

We learned one good way to beat the early cold weather blues, is to get rocked! This is exactly what happened last weekend when Stairwell set up on the deck at Blackbeard’s Triple Play for their show on Saturday night. With temps dipping down to the 40’s it was a challenge for the band but the fans rocking with them made it worth the effort.

Stairwell has New Bern roots, with original member and lead singer Jeremy Monette standing at the helm of the band. But really, their story started and developed in Greenville, NC. They have been rocking the scene for more than a decade and still get excited to bring the rock music for all to enjoy! Stairwell was founded by Jamie Rawls and Mark Richardson in 2007. Mark decided to take a leave of absence from the to pursue personal interests.

Currently, the band offers the talents of  founding members Jamie Rawls guitar, and vocals; original member Monette, on point with the lead vocals,  drummer Jeremiah Shawn Pierce, who has been offering the beats since 2015, Fred Watkins on bass, who joined the band in June 2017 and coming on board this Spring,  Jason Lawing on guitar.

Besides offering familiar songs that run the gamut from rock to pop to hard rock to funk, the band also offers a great variety of original tunes that truly help them shine as a band. They will be rocking the fans in Washington next. Mark the calendars for their appearance at Market Street Pub on November 30, 2018. Music rocks from 10 pm until 2 am.

For those looking to keep up with the band, support them and learn more be sure to visit their website at

3rd Degree Bern Rocks the Dirty Bird

Bouncing around town makes the night the most fun. So following my fun times with Stairwell at Blackbeards, I headed over to The Brown Pelican to check in with Third Degree Bern. As one might note by the name, they are a New Bern based cover band offering the fun rock, pop, and blues hits that everyone knows and loves. Rounding out their sounds are local stringers Brian McDowell offering lead guitar and vocals, Tom Davis plays guitar an offers the lead on vocals, Chris Morden plays bass and holding the sticks is Rich Diemetre on drums. For friends and fans of the band, you can find them rocking Taberna Country Club on December 6, 2018. Save the date and get ready to rock into the holiday season with this fun quartet.

Soothing Music at Mullet Fest

I had a Sunday morning brunch meeting at The Church Street Deli, Pub, and Inn located on Church St., Swansboro, NC.  While I was there I got to enjoy the music offerings of Robert Gasperson. This young pianist is a classically trained player and vocalist who is looking to branch out a bit more. With composing on his mind, the singer-songwriter is looking forward to making his own music as the days unfold.

He already offers a full variety of cover songs to fill hours of sets lists for shows. He is available for hire for anyone in need of music for their club, private party, wedding or special celebration. I first met Gasperson at a showcase performance for The Earl Jones School of Music where Gasperson is a student. It was a nice way to welcome the day, listening to familiar music coupled with good food and excellent company.

Last night the weather offered more rain which put a damper on some events about town, but what I did manage to catch I thoroughly enjoyed! My first stop brought me to The Thirsty Bruin, 224 Middle St., New Bern, where I enjoyed the sounds of local song maker Ed Prophet. The talented stringer and singer keeps busy on the road offering music to fans along the Crystal Coast. I had just missed Ed last weekend at the Cape Carteret Fall Festival, so seeing him last night was long overdue. He offered two fine sets to friends that gathered at the Thirsty Bruin last night. Tonight the singer will be entertaining at The Church Street Deli and Pub, located at 99 W Church St., Swansboro, NC. Music is offered from 7-10 pm. To keep up with this singer please find him on ReverbNation by clicking his name:

Carolina Sky Delights Bike Riders and Offers Bluegrass and More

There was a fundraiser in full swing last night when I stopped at The Brown Pelican and Carolina Sky was offering the fun grooves when I got there. They performed in a trio formation with Caroline Tanner, Phil Lanier, Sara Rosellen offering the sounds with all things strings. They swapped out between banjo, guitars, mandolins, and violin. The beautiful thing about this band is their uniqueness. At press time I had no news about upcoming gigs, but when I hear the news I will share it with you first!

The Brown Pelican often teams up with local charities to combine, music, food and fundraising fun. Next month you can join the cause for the cause with Lily Fest, brought to us by GEM Productions and the good people at Bernaroo Music and Arts Festival and help support the Coastal Women’s Shelter.

Carolina Lily Fest 2018

GEM Productions is proud to announce that Carolina Lily Fest returns for its fourth year on November 17th, as New Bern’s premier outlet for the celebration of powerful women in our community. Each year, Carolina Lily Fest hosts an array of female musicians, artists, and vendors, who donate their time and efforts to raise money for the Coastal Women’s Shelter, the sole provider of no-cost comprehensive domestic violence services in Craven, Jones, and Pamlico counties. CWS is an organization that does so much to provide for our community, so let’s bear together and help raise funds for this incredible organization. This year’s event will return to The Brown Pelican for an evening full of female empowerment for a fantastic cause!

This year’s event will be headlined by the immensely talented Crystal Bright, an incredible Chapel Hill-based singer/multi-instrumentalist, who blends European and American world music influences, twisting her music into a darkly cinematic yet operatic burst of energy. Additional eastern NC based acts will be announced soon!

Carolina Lily Fest is open to any female performers/female-centric groups, poets, arts or crafts vendors who would like to participate. If you’re interested in joining us as a part of Carolina Lily Fest, send an email over to bernaroomusicfest@gmail.com

Let’s Kick the Weekend into High Gear with Music

New Bern Boasts the Blues Weekly

I have said it before and I will tell you again; the blues is alright! Knowing that we can celebrate it each week is equally as wonderful. It was announced earlier this month the Big Jim Kohler would be the regular Tuesday entertainment at City Stage New Bern, located at 901 B Pollock St., New Bern, NC.

Since the club opened, Big Jim has been a regular feature on stage., but now they have increased the volume on the blues and will be ushering in each Tuesday with two sets of fun and fine Chicago style blues with Big Jim on guitar and vocals, and his beautiful bride, Kathy Kohler on vocals, Chris Buttita on bass and Tom Parker on drums. Music from these cats starts at 7 pm and the entertainment is free.

If you have not heard Big Jim bring his blues, you are missing out on New Bern’s blazing sapphire string man. Born with many talents, he pursued music only after sports led him to injury. Here is the most recent band bio drafted by Kathy sent to me by Big Jim earlier in the week.

Meet the Band!

“Nearly 30 years into a playing career, Big Jim Kohler manages to keep it fresh every time he makes his way to the stage. He started cutting chords in clubs on Long Island and in New York City, before long he was playing festivals and alongside heroes and friends. With many stories to share and two CD’s under his belt; The Road Goes On Forever and The Party Never Ends.

On the caravan, these days are Kathy Kohler, a veteran of theater and clubs. Singing blues and gospel all while being the wife and mom to Big Jim’s brood. Chris Buttita is on bass; hailing from Chicago, Buttita also plays bass for North Carolina’s Hot Buttered Grits, a New Bern based jam band with a large and devoted fan base that love roots, funk and jamming good music. The drum stool is manned by Tom Parker from Syracuse, NY. Parker crossed Big Jim’s path out on the road, back in the day when Parker was keeping the beat with harp master Carey Bell and Kohler was swapping licks and backing the legendary bluesman Son Seals. After running into each other in Eastern Carolina it was only natural for the two to team up.

Always a good time Big Jim Kohler moves on playing intimate clubs or on larger stages with the same love for music and his audience.”

Save the Date:

44746033_927357964142052_7615372672490274816_n.jpg

For those who can’t make it out on Tuesday, be sure mark your calendar for Saturday, November 10, 2018. That is when you can take a little trip to the scenic Oriental, NC to take a pause for the cause and meet the Kohler’s, as the belt the blues to raise money for Pamlico Community College. They will perform from 4-7 pm at The New Village Brewery located on Broad Street. There will also be a silent auction, free pizza and great craft beer available at the cash bar.

Chasing Rain Clouds & Finding Festivals

Speaking of the blues, that is one thing that the sky wasn’t last Saturday as I rode around from one festival to another trying to escape the raindrops, which greeted me at all locations, until it was time to go to an indoor gig, of course.

Cape Carteret Fall Festival

Cape Carteret hosted their First Annual Fall Festival, which featured a variety of vendors, fall fun for the family and live music. The event was hosted at a town park and offering the live music. When I showed up was The Mad Fiddler, Jason Addams; and Davis Lott  offering a variety of familiar favorites, including, “Witchy Woman,” a song that fits great in the fall. Also included in the show were a variety of original songs as well.

I have been wanting to see Addams perform for some time now. Being a fan of the fiddle, I have been interested in seeing his show since first hearing about him about a year ago. I will say, it was worth the wait, Addams has mad skills on the fiddle, hence his nickname the Mad Fiddler. When I first met Lott, it was many moons ago, when he was jamming with his other band project, Big Drink Music Company. Both music projects are great fun and worth checking out. The players are professional and fun and the music is familiar and rocking!

Second Helping Does Sound Check in the Rain and Closes out the ENC Food, Brews and BBQ

Upon leaving the Crystal Coast, I headed North and West and found my way to Kinston to check out the last leg of the ENC Food, Brews and QUE Festival which took place at Pearsons Park in Downtown Kinston, NC

Offering the music for the event were several familiar local acts. Opening the day was TrainWreck, who funked up the morning. New Bern’s Country crooner, Bryan Mayer rocked the stage next. The Wicked Shimmies are a Kinston based band, that offered the third fun set of rock and cool grooves. Closing out the day was the Lenoir based tribute band Second Helping, who is nationally known as the longest-running tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Of course, I showed up just in time to hear them do the sound check in the rain. Following a brief shower, they worked out all of the kinks and the band shut down the event with the Southern Rock favorites that fans love. Though the band is local, they perform mostly out-of-state. They have one more event on the calendar that is in our area.

43237899_742036129482748_4536668281389449216_n.jpg

You can take a pause for the cause and rock with the band at Fall Ball 19, taking place on Saturday, November 10, 2018. The Fall Ball is a fundraiser to benefit Edgewood Community School. The Fundraiser will kick off with the third annual wing and pig cook-off. There will be seven bands on the bill and all the good times you would like to have. This is a BYOB event, so pack your coolers and mark your calendars. Campers, RVs, and tents are welcome. The address for the Fall Ball is 750 Racetrack Rd., La Grange NC. The event starts at 11 am and runs until 10 pm.

Adam Hill Returns to The Brown Pelican

This past year, Second Helping hit the road with another area band. The Adam Hill Band joined them on several shows this past Summer. This offered Hill an opportunity to perform on bigger stages and in new areas.

Speaking of the Adam Hill Band, they were in New Bern last weekend, so following all of the festival fun, I headed back to town. On Saturday, the band returned to the Dirty Bird, aka The Brown Pelican, 411 Broad St., New Bern, NC. It was the first time the trio played there this year. It was a fun night rocking with the Lenoir County-based rock outfit.

This weekend they will be playing a private party. In the days ahead, the band will be busy rocking some big stages. Next Friday the band will be rocking Wilmington, when they perform at Bourbon St. S Front St., Wilmington, NC. Music plays from 9 pm till 1 am.  On Saturday, November 3, they will be rocking Wish You Were Beer Tavern, Goldsboro, offering music from 9 pm till midnight. The following week they will be on the road and rocking them in Clayton on Friday, November 9 and in Raleigh on Saturday, November 10, 2018. Sharing the stage both nights with other great rocking acts. Please see details below!

Holiday Weekend Wrap Up and A Local Supergroup Debuts In New Bern

On the Scene With Tracey Stones

Sunday is a Funday When Monday Takes A Holiday

The Adam Hill Band rocked Sunday Funday at Dukenfield’s Tavern, in Half Moon, NC. The band offered a great many favorites from classic rock to country. Of all the songs played, it was most awesome to hear them offer their original music. With that being said, here is the band with their song “Change.”

Change By the Adam Hill Band

Speaking of change, one thing that helped change things for the band this year was the opportunity to share some dates with the national touring act, Second Helping. They are based out of NC and serve as the longest running Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Band.

As a result of this opportunity, Hill has traveled more and found quite a few like minds to keep company with while on the road. Following some time after a while, the idea of a new band emerge.

The Potters Hill Band is the result of that idea. The big band offering classic as well as southern rock and blues hits; made their debut in New Bern. Taking the stage on the deck at Blackbeard’s Triple Play Restaurant last night, they rocked the crowd and got hips shaking with their fun music.

Getting their name from the place they gather to rehearse, this band came about as a result of Chris McCallister wanting to share the stage with Adam Hill. Joining the two slingers are Jon Riggs, vocals and guitar, Tom Spellman, Josh Overby, and Dave Nichols also on the six strings.  Rick Ellis on bass, Joey Gilette on drums. Along with the skilled playing, they also offer beautiful harmonies with the backing vocals of Fleeta Griffith and Laura McCallister. Helping on some harmonies when time allows is Tracey Brenneman as well.

Much of the set list was offered with an off the cuff appeal, highlighting the ability of all players. In all, the meat and potatoes of the band got together for no more than five rehearsals.

The line up last night was nothing short of an all-star cast of local talent, that came together for the sake of fun and good times with music. Last night was memorable in that in all my years of covering live, local music, I never covered a SUPERGROUP. This was exciting. Players from five bands came together to rock the night. Those bands which were in part represented include The BiPolar Express, with Josh Overby offering some licks, Bern It Down was there with Tracey Brenneman offering backing tracks, Eight Track made the mix with bass player Rick Ellis offering his talents, The Adam Hill Band was present with Hill representing, and of course Second Helping had the most to offer with Chris McCallister on guitar, his lovely bride Laura on backing vocals, Fleeta Griffith joining her, drummer Joey Gilette, and guest guitarist Tom Spellman.

In all, there might have been time for a handful of practices and in some cases, that was evident. However, the fun part was watching off of these skilled players working things out. It’s not every day we have 30 guitar strings going at it with a rhythm section and three-part harmonies. It was quite sweet to take it in from all sides of the stage. The band is working on booking more dates around town and the area. You can keep up with that news by finding the band on Facebook by clicking this link: Potters Hill Band.

For fans of the band Second Helping, they have a date on the books this month. Mark the calendars for Saturday, September 22, 2018, and come to enjoy the show at the Red Room, 220 N Herritage St., Kinston, NC. Music starts at 10 pm.

For friends and fans of The Adam Hill Band, you can find Hill playing solo tonight at Crossroads Grill & Bar, Highway 55, Seven Springs, NC. Music is free and plays from 10 pm until 2 am. Tomorrow Hill will join the band at Capt. Bob Beck’s Marina Cafe for Sunday Funday. Music plays from 5-8 pm. Come to enjoy the great grooves and free food!

Friends and fans of Tracey Brenneman Music and her band Bern It Down, they are currently seeking a lead guitar player. If you are looking for your next break be sure to reach out to Brenneman on Facebook.

Open Mic Madness at the Dirty Bird Brings Talent

One of the greatest parts of any open mic is, you never know who is going to show up. It has been a few weeks since I check out the open mic that is hosted weekly at The Brown Pelican. On Thursday evening I decided to stick around town and check things out around here for a change. I am so glad I did. Though it was one of the more quite open mics, it was jam-packed with talented players. The highlight of it was watching them all join together for a few songs after many solo acts offered their selections.

The night included delightful music offered by a trio of friends, CDS as the deemed themselves is simply music brothers Cecil, Doug, and Steve. With the fluttering notes of flute and the sweet sound of strings joining the mix, this group was fun, unique and full of talent. Later in the night, they were joined by host, Brian Mac on bongo, Randy Moore on electric guitar and Henry on the acoustic six-string. Before the night was done, bar back, Mike took to the stage and offered a few new songs he learned earlier in the day. That just makes my heart sing. I love being around to catch such a special moment.

Open mic is the kick off of music offerings each week at The Brown Pelican, 411 Broad Street, New Bern, NC. Sign up starts at 7 pm and music starts rocking at 8 pm. Live music offerings continue with acoustic acts serving the sounds from 7-10 pm each Friday night and bands rocking the stage from 8-11 pm every Saturday night. Tonight Selina Solomon will rolling town to deliver the sounds bar owner Heather Haiss loves. She will be helping the bar owner celebrate her birthday. I think she turns 29 today! No really!
