On the Scene With Tracey Stones

Sunday is a Funday When Monday Takes A Holiday

The Adam Hill Band rocked Sunday Funday at Dukenfield’s Tavern, in Half Moon, NC. The band offered a great many favorites from classic rock to country. Of all the songs played, it was most awesome to hear them offer their original music. With that being said, here is the band with their song “Change.”

Change By the Adam Hill Band

Speaking of change, one thing that helped change things for the band this year was the opportunity to share some dates with the national touring act, Second Helping. They are based out of NC and serve as the longest running Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Band.

As a result of this opportunity, Hill has traveled more and found quite a few like minds to keep company with while on the road. Following some time after a while, the idea of a new band emerge.

The Potters Hill Band is the result of that idea. The big band offering classic as well as southern rock and blues hits; made their debut in New Bern. Taking the stage on the deck at Blackbeard’s Triple Play Restaurant last night, they rocked the crowd and got hips shaking with their fun music.

Getting their name from the place they gather to rehearse, this band came about as a result of Chris McCallister wanting to share the stage with Adam Hill. Joining the two slingers are Jon Riggs, vocals and guitar, Tom Spellman, Josh Overby, and Dave Nichols also on the six strings.  Rick Ellis on bass, Joey Gilette on drums. Along with the skilled playing, they also offer beautiful harmonies with the backing vocals of Fleeta Griffith and Laura McCallister. Helping on some harmonies when time allows is Tracey Brenneman as well.

Much of the set list was offered with an off the cuff appeal, highlighting the ability of all players. In all, the meat and potatoes of the band got together for no more than five rehearsals.

The line up last night was nothing short of an all-star cast of local talent, that came together for the sake of fun and good times with music. Last night was memorable in that in all my years of covering live, local music, I never covered a SUPERGROUP. This was exciting. Players from five bands came together to rock the night. Those bands which were in part represented include The BiPolar Express, with Josh Overby offering some licks, Bern It Down was there with Tracey Brenneman offering backing tracks, Eight Track made the mix with bass player Rick Ellis offering his talents, The Adam Hill Band was present with Hill representing, and of course Second Helping had the most to offer with Chris McCallister on guitar, his lovely bride Laura on backing vocals, Fleeta Griffith joining her, drummer Joey Gilette, and guest guitarist Tom Spellman.

In all, there might have been time for a handful of practices and in some cases, that was evident. However, the fun part was watching off of these skilled players working things out. It’s not every day we have 30 guitar strings going at it with a rhythm section and three-part harmonies. It was quite sweet to take it in from all sides of the stage. The band is working on booking more dates around town and the area. You can keep up with that news by finding the band on Facebook by clicking this link: Potters Hill Band.

For fans of the band Second Helping, they have a date on the books this month. Mark the calendars for Saturday, September 22, 2018, and come to enjoy the show at the Red Room, 220 N Herritage St., Kinston, NC. Music starts at 10 pm.

For friends and fans of The Adam Hill Band, you can find Hill playing solo tonight at Crossroads Grill & Bar, Highway 55, Seven Springs, NC. Music is free and plays from 10 pm until 2 am. Tomorrow Hill will join the band at Capt. Bob Beck’s Marina Cafe for Sunday Funday. Music plays from 5-8 pm. Come to enjoy the great grooves and free food!

Friends and fans of Tracey Brenneman Music and her band Bern It Down, they are currently seeking a lead guitar player. If you are looking for your next break be sure to reach out to Brenneman on Facebook.

Open Mic Madness at the Dirty Bird Brings Talent

One of the greatest parts of any open mic is, you never know who is going to show up. It has been a few weeks since I check out the open mic that is hosted weekly at The Brown Pelican. On Thursday evening I decided to stick around town and check things out around here for a change. I am so glad I did. Though it was one of the more quite open mics, it was jam-packed with talented players. The highlight of it was watching them all join together for a few songs after many solo acts offered their selections.

The night included delightful music offered by a trio of friends, CDS as the deemed themselves is simply music brothers Cecil, Doug, and Steve. With the fluttering notes of flute and the sweet sound of strings joining the mix, this group was fun, unique and full of talent. Later in the night, they were joined by host, Brian Mac on bongo, Randy Moore on electric guitar and Henry on the acoustic six-string. Before the night was done, bar back, Mike took to the stage and offered a few new songs he learned earlier in the day. That just makes my heart sing. I love being around to catch such a special moment.

Open mic is the kick off of music offerings each week at The Brown Pelican, 411 Broad Street, New Bern, NC. Sign up starts at 7 pm and music starts rocking at 8 pm. Live music offerings continue with acoustic acts serving the sounds from 7-10 pm each Friday night and bands rocking the stage from 8-11 pm every Saturday night. Tonight Selina Solomon will rolling town to deliver the sounds bar owner Heather Haiss loves. She will be helping the bar owner celebrate her birthday. I think she turns 29 today! No really!

Dancing with Familiar Faces and Rock with Fan Favorites

On the Scene With Tracey Stones

This week we dance with familiar faces and fan favorites. Come on friends, Let’s dance!

part0.jpg

Joe Brown & The Band Go To The Coast to Rock Off the Hook

Last week was an awesome week for Joe Brown & The Band. On Friday night they played the big stage for fans and friends in the New Bern Area, when they brought the final show for Footloose on the Neuse Summer Concerts Series, brought to us by Trent Cadillac and GMC and New Bern’s Park and Recreation Department.

Many gathered on the lawn for the final event of the Summer, just as many headed to the coast. On Saturday night, the band did the same and played their debut show at the beach. Joe Brown & The Band brought music for the people to the deck of Off The Hook. They rocked the crowd with their fun grooves. The crowd danced and enjoyed the holiday weekend and great music.

Joe Brown and The Band are a New Bern based soul and R&B band, that offer familiar favorites that will keep you in the groove. Be sure to click their name and follow the link to their Facebook page. Once you get there, don’t forget to give them alike!

The Bryan Mayer Band offered a solid night of music last Saturday, to those out savoring the last moments of the Summer season. The band rocked the deck of Southern Salt Seafood Company and Waterfront Restaurant, 701 Evans St., Morehead City, NC.

The boys enjoyed a busy season of rocking festival crowds throughout our state and beyond. They spent a few weeks on the road, as well, rocking country fans to the North, making made stops in New York and Pennsylvania.

For fans and friends of the singer-songwriter, who is putting Country Music on the New Bern map, he will be taking a pause for the cause tomorrow night. Hank Barbee and the Dusty Trio Come to Town to Promote Swanfest

On Wednesday evening I headed out to The Icehouse Waterfront Restaurant in Swansboro to check in with my sweet friends, known as The Dusty Trio. Hank Barbee, Jim Durham, and Matt Henderson were offering the fun grooves to the crowd on the deck.

When the band is rocking in full formation, they are known as The Dust Parade and offer the mad drum skills of Logan Watson in the backbeat. Though he was not with the band during this gig, he will be rocking the community stage this Sunday with The Dust Parade for Swanfest.  The band will be at the pavilion in historic downtown Swansboro with music playing for 6:30-8 pm. You are invited to bring your lawn chairs and blankets. This show will wrap up another fun music season with special thanks being extended to Seaside Arts Council.

Happy Birthday to a Bluesman and Rocking with New Bern’s Rock Trio

Happy Birthday, Blues Man, Let’s Celebrate You!

40152152_899500196927829_1761224843795103744_o.jpg

What a beautiful day. Today truly is a special day. Some of my favorite people in the world were born on this day, for that I celebrate!!! One of them is the coolest blues cat around these parts. Big Jim Kohler walked into my life with his music in March 2013 and changed it for the greater good in so many ways.

From 2013-2017 Big Jim played his blues to my begging ears regularly and each time he and his bride, Kathy Kohler, did that; it nourished a part of my soul that had been neglected for decades. It was enough to get me thinking about writing again. Once I scored a smartphone capable of good video in 2014, I started videotaping and taking pics. By 2015 I was publishing music news weekly and many weeks I mentioned Big Jim and his blues!

A year ago my sweet friend was clinging to life and coming out of a medically induced coma for his 50th birthday. I sat next to his bed with his hand in mine and prayed for God to keep him here with us. In my talks with God, I explained how we had more good work to do. I told God that if Jim pulled through I would spend the rest of my days trying to build a healthier music community for him to play. That mission still walks with me daily.

Now that he is on the road to recovery from his addiction to alcohol, feeling better every day and out here playing his blues for us again. I am even more inspired to see a foundation for music makers. There is a great need for a Blues Society in our area and that is in the works as part of the overall mission. Big Jim is the ambassador of it all!

IMG_1658

This weekend Big Jim is celebrating his birthday with friends, and doing what he loves…he is playing his blues for a wedding in the mountains today. You can catch him on stage at The City Stage on Tuesday, September 18, 2018. Music will be served from 7-9 pm. To keep up to speed with the band, check out this link: Big Jim Kohler

Before we leave here running, cause walkin’ is much too slow, let me say:

Happy Birthday, bluesman!

The BiPolar Express Rocked The Tarheel

IMG_5886.JPG

A local trio of rockers, known best as The BiPolar Express opened the night of rock-driven performances at The Tarheel Concert Venue, in Jacksonville, NC. The New Bern based band features Josh Overby on guitar and vocals, Wick Wickline on bass and vocals, and Mike Lancaster on drums and vocals. They are a fun cover band offering all the great songs from the 80’s and 90’s hair band era. This alone made them a great pick for opening the night for the popular 80’s band Great White.

They are all well-rounded and talented players, who have great fun when they gather on stage. They offer classic like Ratt’s “Round and Round,” AC/DC’s “Whole Lotta Rosie” Bon Jovi, “Livin’ On A Prayer” Morris Day and The Time’s “Jungle Love,” when they want to funk you up, and even Mötley Crüe, Poison and Guns n Roses music is also featured in their setlist!

If you have not seen this rocking trio, be sure to pencil them in soon. You will not be disappointed.

Jack Russell’s Great White

Closing out the rock bill at the Tarheel Concert Venue, was Jack Russell’s, Great White. For those old enough to hold memories of the 80’s Hair Band Rock Era then you will remember this band from their chart-topping hit “Once Bitten Twice Shy”

Following the show, I did some research on the man and the band and here is what I learned, mostly from Wikipedia:

The band originated under the will of teen rocker Jack Russell, who was the drummer for the band in the early days, and Mark Kendall who was the co-founder and guitar player. They first came together under the name Highway. As they evolved they became Livewires. They ended that era by playing their last gig as Wires.

As they rocked through the 80’s they would become the chart-toppers known to us as Great White. They offered several hits including  “Save Your Love” and “Rock Me” with their first album Once Bitten in 1987. Twice Shy is what gave us their greatest hit, “Once Bitten Twice Shy.”

The band continued to rock through the 90’s without any chart-topping success until they broke up in 2001.

In 2002, Russell was keeping busy with his own project, but having a hard time attracting audiences, so he got together with Kendall and asked for permission to tour under the name of “Jack Russell’s Great White.”

The following year the band would make headlines after a playing a show at a bar on Rhode Island called The Station. The sell out crowd was ready to rock the new year right, when sadly an accident turned the night to tragedy and the soundproofing in the club caught fire, leading to a blaze that claimed 100 lives. One of the lives lost was the band’s guitarist Ty Longley.

Since 2011, Russell has been keeping busy, releasing music and touring. The current line up features, obviously, Jack Russell, lead vocals, percussion, Tony Montana, rhythm guitar, backing vocals, keyboards, harmonica; Robby Lochner, lead guitar, backing vocals, Dicki Fliszar, drums, backing vocals and Dan McNay, bass guitar, backing vocals.

During their show last night at the Tarheel they offered a great many of their own works, but Russell also took us on a journey of how he got into this rock n roll business and offered some Hendrix and Zeppelin samplings as well.

There are a couple of newer songs I found to be worthy of your listening time. The one song they offered last night that resonated with me was “My Addiction.” It’s a moving song with lots of truth. If you would like to check it out, just click here:

You Never Know Who We Will Meet Along the Road and We Find Music Back at Home

On the Scene With Tracey Stones

39454271_893077464236769_4166981715870351360_n
Tracey Stones with Randall Hall, Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist 1987-1994

Breakfast with a Guitar Legend

When I last left you we were rocked by the Adam Hill Band who saved the day for a major race event at a golf course in Jacksonville, Fl. Though the trip and show were not what we were all hoping for, it end on an uplifting note with singing and laughter shared back at the hotel.

IMG_E5776[1]

Following their two hour show the band packed up, came back to the hotel to gather some clothes and share a quick song and memory before they hit the road for home. Hill was signed up for a Battle of the Bands competition which kicked off at 5 pm on Saturday night. He did battle with himself when his band Victim of the Cause went head to head with Hill‘s former band which he played lead for, Solid Ground. Solid Ground won the competition and finished off the night for the Tuckahoe MC Anniversary Party!

For those looking for Hill this weekend, be sure to catch him with the band at North Street Burger Bar on Highway 70 East in Kinston, NC. Music plays from 10 pm til 1 am. Come get rocked.

Many of the members of Second Helping, however, took their time and packed up the next morning and hit the road following breakfast at Crackle Barrel with legendary guitarist Randall Hall. Hall played with Skynyrd after the band reunited and hit the road. He was hand picked by the man he replaced. Allen Collins had worked with Hall in his own band project and asked Hall to join the band following a crash which left Collins paralyzed. Hall left the band in 1994 and these days and since 1997 he has spent time working with the super group World Classic Rockers and his own project the Randall Hall Band.

Though this last road date was a bust for Second Helping, the band has several dates closer to home in the coming months. To keep up to speed with them check out their site by visiting https://www.second-helping.com/

Back in The Bern with Hot Buttered Grits

We rolled back into town by 9 pm and after unpacking the car and a quick shower I headed to town to see how things turned out with The Hot Buttered Grits. They were rocking the patio on Saturday night at Circa 1810 Bar at The Harvey Mansion. I made it there just in time to catch the end of their last set.  What a great way to settle back in to the routine with tasty favorites offered by these locally grown groovers! The band will be back on the patio this winter, when they warm things up with their jams near the holidays!

Steel Shot Serves the Fun in the Sun

On Sunday Circa 1810 Bar at The Harvey Mansion offered the sounds of the Pamlico County duo, Steel Shot featuring birthday boy, Jeremy Lowery on bongos and vocals and Shawn Mitchell on the strings and vocals. They offered a fun show to wrap up the weekend on the patio with good music and cold beer. If you haven’t seen their show, it is very crowd inspired. You can see what I mean by checking them out on Sunday, August 26, 2018 at Swansboro Yacht Club, 126 W Corbett Ave, Swansboro, NC, (910) 326-7272. Music plays on the deck from 4-7 pm.  They will also be rocking the Arendell Room 715 Arendell Ave., Morehead City, NC, (252) 240-2753; on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 from 9 pm until midnight. On Thursday, August 30, they will be rocking the Salt Bar from 9 pm til midnight.

When the duo is not busy rocking under the banner of Steel Shot, they are busy on the road with The Bryan Mayer Band. Lowery works hard as a stage hand and roadie while Mitchell manages the band and plays drums. To check out The Bryan Mayer Band look for them on stage tonight at Salt Bar. Music starts at 10 pm and they rock you til 1 am.

Big Jim Brings the Blues to New Bern on Tuesday

Big Jim Kohler offered a great show on Tuesday night from the new stage of City Stage, 901 Pollock St., New Bern, NC. He was on hand with his band to deliver a full night of great blues music. With Kohler leading the way on vocals and guitar, he was joined on bass by Chris Butitta and Tom on drums. Later in the evening Kohler was accompanied by his bride Kathy Kohler who offered several spectacular numbers that brought the audience to their feet with applause and gratitude.

For anyone who missed the good times and awesome blues, please come out this Tuesday, August 28, 2018 when they promise to do it again! Music starts at 7 pm and the band plays til 9:30 pm. The City Stage offers a pub style menu, a great selection of beer, drink specials and live entertainment five nights a week.  In fact we will pick it up there again tomorrow with more from the midweek to the weekend.

Branching Out

21462303_1967703893472353_930734472132356105_n

When I left you last week, I noted my news spread for the Newport Voice. This month I put the spotlight on Tiffany Elaine and all of the hard work she is doing in promoting local artists in her area, by way of hosting several open mic events each week at venues near and far, to the singer/ songwriter’s home along the Crystal Coast.

As part of my work with the paper, I have kept busy this week distributing the press coverage and meeting new talent.

First Stop Shortway Brewing Co~ Newport, NC

It was a fun Monday night at Shortway Brewing Co, 230 Chatham St. Newport, NC, with a room full of talent. Also adding a nice surprise on the night, it was free taco night, where they served a variety of tacos and sides plus chips and salsa too.

Besides the good beer and the free food, I will reiterate, the room was also filled with talent. We heard music from a master and one of the founders of the long-running Pickin’ n Grinning Festival here in New Bern. Following Bob’s set, we got to enjoy the young Mackenzie Webb, a 13-year-old with a powerful voice and an ear for music. I also had the pleasure of meeting Brian and Pat Till, a husband and wife duo that offer bluegrass and more. Their band WireGrass is a quartet offering country bluegrass and Americana stylings.

Shortway Brewing Company is the place to be, the second and fourth Monday of the month. That is when Tiffany Elaine welcomes jammers to the front to display their talent. Come out to enjoy a fresh brewed beer and delight in the talent that comes from all around! Other things to check out throughout the week include 30 Second Rocks on Wednesday Nights, Cigar Night on Thursday night and open mic twice monthly.

Morris Willis at Ribeyes in Beaufort, NC

I stopped in Ribeyes of Beaufort on Tuesday night and enjoyed the music of Morris Willis, who was offering great favorites from the 50’s and 60’s. It was delightful to see his friends enjoy the show and dance the night away. Morris Willis knows all of the great classics and has quite a story to tell of days on the road. I look forward to hearing more about Willis’ story via his lovely wife Liz Willis. She was running his sound as he performed for the crowd which gathered in the bar area.  For anyone who would love to listen to this fun player, you are invited to stop by each and every Tuesday to catch him rocking the lounge. The food is wonderful and the service is warm, friendly and fast too. Anyone in the market for a fine one-man band, give Morris a call at 252-241-7912 or 252-241-7812

Crystal Coast Brewery in Atlantic Beach, NC

Offers and Beer and Music Buzz

On Tuesday night I spent some more time with Elaine, as she hosted an open mic at Crystal Coast Brewing Company in Atlantic Beach. This was the place where I first became inspired to write about her good work and mission for other music makers. Here again was another fun night of great musicianship. Here again, was another example of not knowing what to expect. The night was welcomed in by a few songs offered by the singer-songwriter herself. She then turns it over to her band of friends, one by one introducing each as they approach. She is a wonderful hostess and makes it worth showing up to play, no matter where she goes.

When I walked in, Steve Mehan was at the mic, they have a kinship that is based on a music foundation. Following Mehan’s exit, Elaine joined Fernando Rivera. The pair of music makers has a fun duo project called Now or Never. This is where they found a way to blend her country drawl and his hip-hop act together, for a fresh sound that I think will appeal to many.

Next up we were entertained by another fun duo with blues and rock roots, Mike and Lisa Autry were joined by their friend visiting from Clayton, NC to offer a melodic set of popular songs thick on three-part harmonies. Following their set, I spoke with the couple, who told me they are newly settled in the coastal region but had bands in other regions. They are just growing some roots and are looking forward to finding like-minded players around these parts. Until that falls into place they are content to entertain you as a duo and even trio.

You can check them out tomorrow night in the same place I met them. They will be providing the entertainment from 8-11 pm at Crystal Coast Brewing Co. Located at 219 W Fort Macon Dr., in Atlantic Beach, NC. This brewery spot is a transformed Wings Store, with a fine appeal for anyone in the mood for good music and freshly brewed beer.

Dakini Band In Da House from Wilkes-Barre, PA

Before the night was over it was a family affair of jamming with the Dakini Band, visiting our coast from Wilkes-Barre, PA region. The father Nate Boyer brought his two sons to the stage first for a few jams, one offered sounds from the six-string while the older boy Skyler offered the bass. Next up came cousin Roger Boyer who we have met here before, also on Vacay from PA. Once that concluded it was Nate and his brother plus his son Skyler offering a real dose of Dakini sound bites. They are a fun jam band worth checking out:

The Dusty Trio In Morehead City

Before leaving the coast, I stopped in on Hank Barbee and the Dusty Trio who were offering the smooth sounds of surf and swing at the Arendell Room this past Tuesday. The bar has a cool vibe and the band sounded great. Tonight you can find Hank solo at Snapperz in Morehead City, working the bar from 6-9 during the dinner hour. Tomorrow he will be rocking Church Street Deli & Pub, 105 W Church St., Swansboro, NC, with music being served from 7-10 pm. Next week Barbee is back with the boys in the band and you can keep up to speed by checking out his website: http://www.hankbarbee.com

A Big Night for The Blues and Open Mic Madness

On the Scene With Tracey Stones

It was a big night for the blues on Sunday, August 5, 2018. I sat on the panel for the 2018 Road To Memphis Blues Challenge for the Triangle Blues Society. The competition was held at The Blue Note Grill, 709 Washington St., Durham, NC.

The panel of judges included myself and two fun and fierce music makers who kept me entertained with stories in between acts. To my left was guitarist Buddy Black whose career credits are extensive. Last year he released a solo effort, Fine Fine Day which won the 2017 Best Self Produced Album Award from the Triangle Blues Society. To my right was the band leader, vocalist and harmonica player for his own act,  Mel Melton and The Wicked Mojo’s, a triangle based blues band. You can check out their disc  Papa Mojo’s Roadhouse which offers a blend of traditional southern blues and zydeco swag.

Near Blind James & Harmonica Bob

The first act to perform was the only duo on the agenda. Near Blind James (James Shoe) and Harmonica Bob (Robert Waldrop) started things off. They two players have been working together for more than three decades and play a variety of blues styles with some serious focus on Piedmont and Ragtime styles. They offered a variety of originals and a couple of cover songs in their time on stage.  To keep up with the blues duo out of Durham, check out their band page on ReverbNation:

Smart Alec Blues

The first solo act to entertain us was Smart Alec Blues who originally hails from New England and has settled in Raleigh. He is a consultant for NASA part-time and enjoys spending his free time writing and playing the blues. To check out more from this artist visit him on YouTube by following this link:

MoJo Collins

Mojo Collins is a blues and folk legend in this state and it was a great honor to hear him offer a fun-filled set of fingerpicking styles and folks structured songs. Collins is a 4th generation singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has been performing around the state and beyond for more than six decades. To check out his music story and to keep up with this artist from the Outer Banks, find him on Facebook:

Jon Shain

From old school stylings to newly forming traditions, our next act was the youngest slinger in the solo/duo category who resinated music traditions that were set well before his time on any stage. Jon Shain offered a great set of more traditional blues sounds.

He has been making music in the Durham region since arriving in 1986. Back then he was a young gun establishing himself on the folk and blues scenes. Since 1996 the singer-songwriter has been releasing albums and touring under his own name. In 2008 Shain won the TBS Blues Challenge and went on to become a finalist in the 2009 competition in Memphis.

Sherman Lee Dillon

The final act in the solo/duo category was Sherman Lee Dillon who offered a fun set of Juke joint stylings and some Piedmont traditions thrown in the mix. His guitar was a beauty and his tones were simple and pure. This singer-songwriter hails from Mississippi and has been calling Carolina home since 2012.

Bring on the Bands

Chicken Shack

This was the first band of the night and they set the bar high with their high energy act featuring amazing vocal harmonies and killer solos, they offered a full show in their 20 minutes on stage. Chicken Shack had a fat sounding, West Coast feel. Though most of the players are based here in NC, they do have bandmates from other states, lending to their influence. The biography introduced them as an eclectic group of church musicians who were brought together for their love of playing the blues. This love poured from the stage.

℘℘℘℘℘

Lockdown

The second act to come calling was Lockdown. They are a high energy blues band based in the Raleigh-Durham area. They have been entertaining crowds for more than a decade and offered a full set of cover tunes. That was the one thing that was a bit disappointing. The music was on point and the vocals strong, but not offering original sounds left me lost. To check out the band in a club near you check them out on Facebook by following:

℘℘℘℘℘

Hawkins King

The third act was a fun trio that is newly making the scene. Hawkins King features the guitar works of Daniel Anderson, the bass phrasings of Dillon Partin and the backbeats of Scott Jones on drums. Their music is a good blend of delta blues meeting with contemporary arrangements. They were much different from the other acts, and perhaps the most original of the competition. ℘℘℘℘℘

Big Jim Kohler Band

I found the final act of the night to be the most traditional blues act of the entire event. The Big Jim Kohler Band offered a fiery set of blues featuring several original compositions and a couple of covers which featured vocalist Kathleen Kohler who crushed her parts behind the microphone. The five-piece blues band has players from the Triangle region to the Crystal Coast.

With a long history in the blues, Big Jim spent many years on stage with blues greats Byther Smith and Son Seals. Since leaving his home n Long Island, NY Kohler has done great work in helping to revive the music scene in the town he now calls home. Before he arrived, in 2011, there were not much blues being offered around New Bern, and now this many years later we talk often about starting a new Blues Society based here in New Bern. For those looking to keep up with Big Jim find the band on Facebook at:

Chicken Shack

When I said they set the bar high, I wasn’t lying. Chicken Shack won the band competition and will be going to Memphis next year to represent the Triangle at The International Blues Competition. Once again, we all join hands in wishing them well on the road ahead. Since winning the competition, they are hard at work making social media pages for the band and sharing their news. As we grow closer to the time I will share more on this band.

The End

Following the announcement of the winners, the two acts gathered on stage for one final photo opportunity. It was a wonderful night that was full of blues, originality, and great music grooves. I was honored to sit on the panel and take part in this annual event. The Triangle Blues Society does great work in keeping the blues alive. Please consider joining them in that mission by becoming a member. You can also help out by participating in the many fundraisers they host to help the winners make their way to Memphis.
