Highlighting New Bern Acts On The Festival Circuit This Weekend And More

79a3c574712f4ba574f2220a5ef4451d

This Music Business, Class Is In!

Never underestimate the power of good goal setting plans. Be as methodical in your plans as you are in your practice. Setting small goals and meeting targets is critical to growth and development. Start simple after you have your band together. Commit to meeting twice a week. One session will be used for songwriting and business development. The follow-up session will be used as a rehearsal.

Set daily, weekly and monthly goals to strive for. As long as you have something to chase you will stay on task with moving forward. It can be simple stuff, like today… I am going to call four clubs to make an introduction. This week I will send 10 emails or messages to clubs or festival organizers to introduce our band. This month we are going to add four new songs to the set-list.

Successful bands are polished and up on their game. They keep things current and evolving so that their fan base grows with each show. This can all be achieved with the simple first step of setting goals and actively working towards them. What goals will you set for yourself and your band this week?  CLASS DISMISSED!

Strung Together

IMG_5708 (3)

New Bern’s famed family band Strung Together, will take to the stage this afternoon at 1 pm to offer a diverse set of pop, folk-infused fun music that will have your toes tapping and hips shaking!

I recently caught the band during their dinner performance on the deck at Persimmons Waterfront Restaurant. It’s been a great journey watching the Olivers as they raise their family on stages right before our eyes. They are a fun and refreshing band, offering good grooves and uplifting beats for all to enjoy!

IMG_5712 (2).JPG

At the helm we find the talented Dad George Oliver on banjo and vocals, his wife Dare offers vocals on many selections. Their three children also take lead roles in the outfit from time to time. Oldest daughter Catherine plays the upright bass, ukelele, and vocals. The middle daughter Abigail plays the guitar and sings and their youngest offspring Mason plays the piano and guitar. Joining the band on fiddle is Addy Quinn and helping fill the sound on drums is  Nick Eickhoff.

IMG_5706 (2).jpg

Today the band will be the first band to take the second stage at the 31st Annual Beaufort Music Festival. Be on hand to shake your hips today at 1 pm. This event has vendors to visit and two stages for live music.

℘℘℘℘

Hot Buttered Grits

Following the performance of Strung Together will be the fun grooves of New Bern based jam band, The Hot Buttered Grits

DSCF2031

Set up as the second band to take the first stage today The Hot Buttered Grits will give another sample of the homegrown talent we know and love here in New Bern. This five-piece jam band offers great original grooves that will get you moving early in the day! Coming together more than a decade ago, this band has 14 years of music making memories logged together.

IMG_4670 (2).JPG

Helping to create their fun and infectious sound are Seth Smithwith vocals, guitar and mandoli. Howard Longino with guitar, vocals, John Johndrowon electric lead guitar and backing vocals. Zach Meadows sits behind the kit and Chris Butitta on bass. The band has several releases and are working on new material for their next effort.  To catch them at the festival be there today at 2 pm for all of the groovy action.

℘℘℘℘

Bryan Mayer Music

Ayden BBQ Cook-off and festival

The final New Bern talent I wish to highlight today is the headliner at The Ayden BBQ Cook-off and Festival. Bryan Mayer started making a name for himself on the country music scene more than five years ago with the release of his single “This Is Me.” Since then, the country crooner has shared stages with rock and country royalty while touring the land.

IMG_5348

Currently the lead singer, tall on talent, is featuring a new line up behind him. Joining the band on guitar is John Coltrane and sitting behind the drums and offering backing vocals is Victor Speight Jr. Still holding down the bottom is bass player of the year, Mike Sandvig.

Today’s event will bring the band to the forefront for their first public display. It was just last week that Mayer closed the curtain on the band he worked with for the past six years. I was on had to watch them as they finished that chapter of their lives. Here is the band offering the follow up to “This Is Me.” Here is Mayer’s song, “Closer To You!”

Chicken Shack is an eclectic group of church musicians, who were brought together by their love of playing the blues. Although mostly from North Carolina, they have members from different parts of America – so they play many styles of blues. This band won The Triangle Blues Society, Road To Memphis Blues Challenge and had the opportunity to travel to Memphis to compete in the 2019 IBC  in January.

The young and talented star on the rise in the blues world is now 20 years old and conquering souls. Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram is set to take the music world by storm with the long-awaited release of his debut album, KINGFISH, on Alligator Records.

Closing things out this amazing night of great blues music will be the Mississippi Blues Child himself, Castro Coleman aka Mr. Sipp. This talented player has been around music all of his life. His parents and aunt had a quartet group. He was influenced by B.B. King at the age of 6 which is when he started playing the guitar.

Music Promotions Why It Is Important Plus The Final Festival Rundown for May

Music Promotions and Festival Fun are the main topics here today  Plus where to find live music tonight!

This Music Business. Class Is In!

Learning the business is essential to making or breaking it with your career in music. I am a big proponent of the promotions angle, as that has always defined best ambitions. Besides the music itself, the next important step is promoting it. If you don’t promote your music why even bother playing it?

Music journalists, photojournalists, videographers all capture a story that can bring your band project to the next level. The radio disc jockeys that can play your song to the masses is your best friend when you are breaking into the business. Cultivate a list and form relationships with these people who can help you broadcast your message.

Whatever you do, don’t rely on social media as your only branding tool. Case in point, I chose to publish my content on a WordPress site so that it can be shared independently to as many sources as I elect. In this case, I share it via email, Facebook, Twitter, WordPress, and LinkedIn.

When I first started out, wrote the content on Facebook and tagged the people who were playing. That was through a good portion of 2015, in 2016 I got more serious about the blog and committed to publishing content here twice weekly. Since 2017, the music promotions in New Bern has caught a lot of attention. That’s when I learned more about how to tag an article so that it is found in common word searches.

The more outside sources your name appears in, the easier it is for people to find your music. For those looking for more tips, I found a great site and good writer too!

Shaun Letang offered great insight into the importance of promotions in his article Master Music Marketing in 2019, The Art of Getting People To Listen to Your Music. And the How To site where it is published is a “Music Industry How To”, that offers great insight on many topics, from promotions to songwriting. The site even has a tool to generate your rapper name or new band branding.

Now go out there and make a name for yourself. CLASS DISMISSED!

33rd Annual Carolina Blues Festival

The Piedmont Blues Preservation Society is proud to present the longest running Blues festival in the Southeast United States!

The 33rd Annual CAROLINA BLUES FESTIVAL has happened all over the Triad. This year they bring it back to LeBauer Park at Greensboro Downtown Parks, Inc.

In recent years the society has been investing in Barber Park and supporting East Greensboro. But they have also held festivals in Jamestown and Winston-Salem as history tells.

This event is now being scripted in Downtown Greensboro for the second year in a row! NCMZ.LIVE was on hand last year for the final day of the fun festival. That is where I met my sweet blues friend Gary Redd.

It was the first time I met the singer, songwriter, former club owner and soulful stringer known as Appaloosa Redd He is a positive and vibrant talent from that area whose band closed out last year’s street fair and park festival. The blues-man stays busy around the Greensboro area with Big Ron Hunter and other talented friends.

Taking a look at this years lineup they have a fist full of fine talent on tap:

House of Dues
Melva Houston
Jon Shain
Clark Stern and The Musical Rewards
Dom Flemons

For more info and tickets visit the Piedmont Blues Society’s Website: https://carolinabluesfestival.com/artist-lineup

℘℘℘℘

Speaking of Appaloosa Redd and Festivals, he and Big Ron Hunter close out the day for the Southern Roots Festival.

This one-day event will take place between 12-5 pm in Prospect Hill, NC. It is a free event and here are the details from Facebook:

The Caswell Council for the Arts will present our first ever “Southern Roots Festival,” celebrating the arts, music, and creative traditions at the roots of Southern Culture. Durham Blues & Brews Festival

And speaking of the Blues and festivals; next Saturday also offers The Durham Blues & Brews Festival in Durham Central Park. This event gets started at 5 pm and offers amazing music until 10 pm. On the bill for this year’s event is

Born in Durham, Oxente opens the show and brings infectious rhythms of Brazil to the streets of the beloved city.

Chicken Shack is an eclectic group of church musicians who were brought together by their love of playing the blues.

Music Festival Season is in Full Swing Let’s Dance

This Music Business. Class is In!

Establishing relationships in the music business is no different from any other life or business situation. Trust and loyalty are earned, as is respect. Let’s say you live in Oriental or Havelock, and take note that there is more going on in New Bern these days. Don’t make it your ambition to play every room around. Even in the friendliest places on earth, businesses do vie for patrons and their revenue. Having said that, if you walk into an establishment and the owner or management hires you and you play the club with some success, don’t do the club owner wrong by talking to the competition.

You have to establish, develop and nurture the relationships you cultivate in this life. If the club owners you meet in the towns you are playing, are treating you well and offering you a fair pay, please do not get greedy by going next door and asking for a gig. That will in some cases give you a one-way ticket out of some towns.

Be Considerate of Your Contacts!

Besides club owners, you will also have interactions with others. Let’s say for example you meet a publicity agent who is offered opportunities to book bands. This is a reflection of my own experiences. If I walk a band into a room and they play there, by all accounts that room is mine and the commission paid to me should continue. For some reason, bands don’t seem to remember that part of the equation. This will lead to burning bridges and hurt feelings.

The first rule of business is to gather as many sources as you can, that will help you meet your bottom line. Take those relationships seriously and nurture them if you wish for them to continue. This is a difficult enough business. The stronger the team you build, the longer you will endure! CLASS DISMISSED!

New Spin on an Old Sound – Davina and the Vagabonds

Davina Sowers and the Vagabonds have created a stir on the national music scene with their high-energy live shows, level “A” musicianship, sharp-dressed professionalism and Sowers commanding stage presence. With influences ranging from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits, the band is converting audiences one show at a time from Vancouver to Miami and across Europe. In 2011 Davina released her first full length, all original album Black Cloud . It was named one of the 10 best releases of the year by the Minneapolis Star & Tribune and awarded 4 ½ stars from Downbeat Magazine. Their next release in 2014, Sunshine hit number 13 in the Billboard Blues Chart and led them to be a musical feature on the hit BBC show later with Jools Holland.

DATV’s shows are filled with New Orleans charm, Memphis soul swagger, dark theatrical moments that evoke Kurt Weill, and tender gospel passages. Davina’s voice and stage presence defy category in a different way. Davina has been compared to Etta James, Amy Winehouse, Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday and Betty Boop, but comparisons don’t suffice: Sowers is a true original.

Bringing you 100 years of American music and Davina’s originals, which lend themselves to the American Songbook, brings edgy nostalgia to older generations and fresh new music to younger ears. The group’s focused, clean sound and emphasis on acoustic instruments is novel to both blues and jazz worlds, and sets the show closer to New Orleans than to Chicago.  Catch this one-of-a-kind live show while they are in town!

Friday Night Fun

Sam Lewis Serves the Sounds at BrUtopia

Let’s start things out with the local singer Sam Lewis. I have been wanting to hear Sam share songs for nearly three years. On Friday night the moment finally arrived and I enjoyed quite a few fine selections that he offered to friends and fans at BrUtopia. It was a great way to kick off the weekend. Lewis is a New Bern based act, that enjoys offering sounds for the sole purpose of providing pleasure to those around him. I will be sure to share his new dates as they become available.

Big Jim Blues Parked at The Garage

Big Jim Kohler Blues Band stayed very busy this week, sharing the blues all about New Bern. They snuck off to share songs in an Easter Jam last Sunday and returned to town to play Monday at the Brown Pelican, Wednesday at The City Stage, Thursday on stage at the Fairgrounds to welcome Fairgoers, on Friday they rocked the blues for The Garage in James City and when we get around to tomorrow you will hear more about the fundraiser they took part in.

The Garage is the fun new joint in James City that is offering fun for all families. They have a fun arcade, a virtual game field, fine fresh beer on tap, food trucks in the lot and live music on the menu each weekend. If you have never been there be sure to stop out soon. This coming Friday Mark McKenzie will be sharing songs, Shepp Herd will be blowing glass and Ben will be pouring the beer.

The Big Jim Kohler Blues Band has a standing engagement, as he plays the last Friday of each month. Music is offered from 7-10 pm.

Jan Michael Fields Band Brought the Party to Blackbeards

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Jan Fields is a busy and talented singer that gained popularity in the ’80s and ’90s with the well known touring act that rocked the scene as SideWinder. Besides fronting his own project, The Jan Michael Fields Band pictured above, he also rekindled the SideWinder effort and recently stepped into the lead singer position for the reincarnated Jesse Bolt, another famed NC band that gained popularity in the ’70s and ’80s.

Based in North Myrtle Beach, SC, Fields and Co. offer a fun show with a great variety of material to keep things interesting throughout the night. Full running production of lights and sound, these players are all professional and enjoy bringing a show to fans and meeting new friends along the way. This was their second appearance at Blackbeard’s in recent months. I will gladly share the news of when they return. While we await news on their return, get to know them better by checking out their website.

Jan Michael Fields Band

For friends and fans of Sidewinder, that band will come together in June on the 15th for a rocking reunion at The State Theatre in Greenville. To get your tickets early check out this link:  Sidewinder Tickets. Doors open at 7 pm and the show starts at 8 pm.

Friday Ends on A Rocking Note in Kinston with Brad Benson

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

It’s been about a year an a half since I last saw this next act. Brad Benson was in Kinston with his Rebel Armada Band and they are an intense rock trio with great energy. The talented singer has two projects that keep him busy. Dead Man’s Mail is the other band that features his strong vocals and stealth guitar.

When not sharing the stage with band-mates the singer performs solo as well. He has a solo performance on Tuesday at Tonic Bar & Social Club. Music will be offered from 7-9 pm. On Saturday the 4th he reunites with Rebel Armada to unload on Locked & Loaded Grill in Garner, NC. Music starts at 10 pm.  The following Saturday the guys come to Winterville and rock Tie Breakers. That will be Saturday, May 11, 2019, at 10 pm.

To get to know this awesome artist, intense with talent, find his website by clicking on his name:

Saturday Night Delights

Sara’s Big Apple Serving Sounds for Supper

I started Saturday night in the back room of Sara’s Big Apple, where dinner was being served to my friends and neighbors and Charlie Duzan was shredding the notes for those in earshot of his fun music. Duzan spent a good couple of decades thinking about playing out and today he is enjoying more time sharing songs in the town he knows and loves.  Sometimes the crooner teams up with his young son Tommy, and other times the duo keeps busy on the solo sides of life.

You can find Duzan sharing songs most nights at The Brown Pelican, he is also known to jam on the street and accepts any obligation which is offered. To find him, seek him out on Facebook today. Charlie Duzan

Big Jim Blues Band Offers Blues for Hurrican Relief at the Bruin

All Hands and All Heart- Smart Response hosted a Fundraiser for Hurricane Relief at The Bruin Craft Beer and Wine Store on Middle Street last night. The team of volunteers gathered to auction off goods and accept donations from the community to help the community from 5-9 pm. In the midst of that good deed, Big Jim Kohler Blues Band offered the blues for listeners and gatherers with big hearts! The money raised by this organization stays local and gets filtered back into Craven and Pamlico Counties.

℘℘℘℘

Marron Chaplin Set a Date to Set Sail!

The acoustic rocker that we all fell in love with, in the time she called New Bern home, Marron Chaplin was out on the scene last night and sharing songs with friends and fans at The Garage. During the show, she announced that she would be leaving the area in June and taking flight for a career in Nashville, TN. With management already in place in the music city for this beautiful girl, it is only a matter of time before we read more about her successes. She will have several shows around the area between now and the time she leaves, and we will bid her a fond farewell together!

℘℘℘℘

Monterio Experience Offers Plenty of Soothing Sounds for the Soul

Next up we find another band that I have been trying to catch for nearly two years or better. The Monterio Experience was in town last night, featuring the powerful voice of Eric Monterio. The skilled singer has a range that is second to none. He is the only singer in the area to pull off the song “Picture,” by Kid Rock and Sheryl Crow while nailing both leads of the duet. The band offers all of the fun party songs that the crowd likes to hear. They offer a little bit of country, a twist of rock n roll, then turn up the funk and the get groovy with soul. You can find the band on Facebook by following this link:

The Monterio Experience

Hearing the band live is always the best, so for those in the Greenville area be sure to look for them on Saturday, May 4, 2019, at Christy’s Euro Pub. They will be on hand and offering a trio formation for that show. The full band will be back in action the following week on Saturday, May 11, 2019, when they play Buck Wild Tavern. Showtime starts at 9 pm.

Carolina Swamp Dogs Offer A Private Show to Attendees at City Stage

The Carolina Swamp Dogs returned to town last night to offer a full night of raw blues music to the few that gathered at The City Stage. This trio of retired Marines have a unique set up and a rare sound to match. I love them. I met them about a year an a half ago at The Seafood Festival in Morehead City and now work with them in bringing them to the area whenever the opportunity serves.

The blues union prefers not to play bars and watering holes but loves the opportunity to serve on benefits and they love restaurants and outdoor community events as well! If you missed them last night, I am sorry for you. The band will return to our area in August to play an afternoon show for me in Fairfield Harbour on August 11, with music being offered 2-4:30 pm and on Saturday, August 24, 2019. The duo that played for the Earthday event will return to the Brown Pelican to play from 8-11 pm. Be sure to put both gigs on your calendar and come celebrate the blues!

Final Stop Offers A Pause for the Cause With Paul Picard Rocking for Cats and Kittens

My final stop for the night last night was The Brown Pelican, where they were hosting a fundraiser for an organization that goes into populated cat areas and captures the cats for the sake of spaying and neutering the animals. While I was there, I spoke with one of the volunteers about the work they are doing and she explained that the group of volunteers work in areas where cat populations are out of control. They keep busy capturing the creatures so to ensure they can’t breed.

The benefit was a Feline Fundraiser for K2C2, non-profit assisting animals. The night offered a silent auction, a donation box was made available for cat donations, and entertainment was offered by Paul Picard. It has been a minute since I last caught Picard, who sounded great as he ended the night with a great many classic rock selections.

Thursdays are becoming just as busy as any weekend offering. This week there will be live music and fine dining at two hot spots in town. The first stop is Captain Ratty’s Seafood & Steakhouse, where they offer live music in the piano bar from 6-9 pm. Patrick Reid will be in the house to entertain this week. Then starting at 7:30 pm on the deck at Persimmons Restaurant there is live music being offered by Strung Together.

Just on the outskirts of town we have another dining and music option with Alisa Mike live at City Stage New Bern, with music served from 7-9 pm. Bouncing back into town, it is the longest running open mic in town over at The Brown Pelican. Sign up at 7, music starts at 8 pm and all are welcome to jam! The Performance Arts Series Presents: NC Raga Revival at Tryon Palace will also be an option this Thursday, May 2, 2019, at The History Center on S Front St. The last option for those looking for something fun and music infused, there is “A Musical Journey thru America” taking place at the Community College’s Orringer Auditorium. There are three performances for this show in all!

Last Call For Big Jim

We All Love Him!

Have you met my blues brother, Big Jim? This guy is the real deal when it comes to Chicago style blues and he has a long list of songs ready to share with his fans and friends. It has been quite a ride sitting shotgun on this blues journey, with this talented slinger who not only plays the blues but lives them out like a true champion. Jim Kohler moved to ENC in 2011 and just six weeks after settling in with his family, they were greeted by the rise of Irene, a Hurrican that washed through their house and washed away most of their possessions. It took them five years to recover and along the way they worked out their sorrows by sharing music with their community. They are the first band to show up at any cause and they are often there donating their time.

We Nearly Lost Him

Before Florence was ever a consideration in our community’s story, there was another story that was penned about our cities blues father! In August 2017, Big Jim fell ill with pneumonia and nearly lost his life. In an effort to save his life and help him recover and heal, the skilled and professional team at Carolina East Medical Center placed Kohler in a coma so that he could combat his addiction to alcohol. For anyone that remembers Big Jim near the end of that long relationship he openly had with beer and whiskey, it was not always pretty.

Let’s All Support Him For the Joy He Brings

Many things have changed since then and throughout it all, Big Jim has been sober and is now in better health than he has ever been in all the years he has called NC home. In fact, it was just Wednesday night that I overheard his bride talk about him being here for all of the many positive changes he has made. I will point out that behind it all, it is his family and music that keep this man going.

Having said that, I will also mention that music is how he makes his living. If he had a better product, it would not take long to send him back out on the road, where he is destined to be. He cannot do that without your help. In February Big Jim fired up a Kickstarter campaign to get this new product recorded and manufactured. On Tuesday, this campaign will be shut down unless we come up with the still needed $1980 to press the play button on a new Big Jim disc!

For the last time, please reconsider and donate to the cause of keeping the blues alive. BIG JIM STYLE!

The girl behind the banner has big dreams and major ambitions of healing the world with music. If you wish to help along on this journey of connecting people to music please consider one of the following options! There are so many ways for people to be a part of this build.

Affordable Partnerships For All

Corporate Unions

I am an advertising vehicle in need of a vehicle to take the dream farther. Let’s work together. If your corporate dollars help to build these well-contemplated plans, that will support the dreams of many local music makers, let’s talk about community commitment. Invested in this build, I can’t imagine what life looks like without working on this business plan, which is going to need a lot of money to make it fire on all cylinders. Corporate Sponsorship packages start at $5,000.

Community Co-Hosts

Are you the leader in your niche? Consider partnering with me by being a stage sponsor! Proudly display your banner across the stages we set up to let locals know that you are supporting local, live music. Sponsorship dollars help to build fair pay stages for acts to offer their music. In exchange, you will be recognized as the co-host of keeping these music dreams alive! Stage sponsorships start at $1,000.

Post Hosts Are Welcome Here

If you are a small business and want to back the mission, consider being a POST HOST! As a post host, you will be featured in an article that will highlight your love of music. A post host will also be given one month of advertising in the sidebar of the blog, seen on all pages. The price to be a Post Host is $250 for one Post or $400 to be The Weekend Warrior POST HOST are just two options to consider.

Advertisers and Donors Appreciated

Are you a band or a small business with an ability to contribute $50.00 each month, consider advertising here! Donations from readers and live music supporters have always been appreciated also. www.paypal.com/ncmz

Thankful for my fans and friends that keep this blog going! Thanks for pulling me through the darkness so to keep the words flowing into the light!  Blog follower and Supporter Kathleen Kolberg Forrest

The Vision

Since I took you all the way back in life last week when I was taking myself out of the blog game, let me just say, I am in it to win it! As self-driven firecracker that has big ambitions and even bigger dreams, I am an emotional wonder in the peak of menopause and awaiting a life without so many hormones.  Though I am unsure how to make everything come together, I just know my idea is still fabulous. And once the government shuts down Facebook, music lovers will survive as they’ll be able to turn to the music zone in their area to know the live music news in their state.

Seeking Clarity

As a means of telling you how vested I am, I went to Craven Community College to sit down with their small business center director Deborah Kania to assess my ideas with another business professional.  After explaining the end result,  she looked at me and said, “So, you’re not a small thinker, are you?” and we laughed.  She also followed up with a deep breath and a “WOW!”

I knew it was going to be a big build. The sample product was nowhere near completion. In fact, I was only 2.5 years into a 4-5 year development phase, on my end. Last September, I was on the verge of taking the leap to invest one business into the other and start monetizing this product when the banks of our river rearranged that plan. I try to stay positive and the best way for me to do that is by not dealing with my life until it becomes a crisis. Last week we hit crisis mode because I am having a very hard time making ends meet. I went from having several thousand dollars a month to invest in this build and now I don’t even have several thousand dollars at all.

Over The Years

I have met with several people over the years and discussed my idea in a shadowed light, as I don’t care to reveal the whole thing until it’s an app ready for the world to download on their phones. If I pull it off, I will build a platform that employs thousands of freelancers like myself who are out here supporting a thriving music scene. I am convinced this is the best way to build a stronger circuit so that local bands have the ability to break out regionally and beyond.

With this good work that I am doing, I am building an opportunity for hungry entrepreneurs, whether they be music journalists, bands, bars or club owners, local music studios, sound engineers, brewing companies and more to be exposed in a partnership that is profitable to all!

The Reality and Frustrations

It was during my meeting with Deborah that I recognized my many frustrations. Not surprising to me, my greatest issue is with people! I am so frustrated by the lack of business sense that floods our local music scene. After some thought, I decided instead of quitting on people, let’s educate them. I believe the best way to deal with this will be through educating people here in the blog.  There are plenty of topics to highlight as well.

Behind the Scene With Tracey Stones

51287894_2488375904509963_3903169895243710464_o

There is always something in the works behind the scenes in my world. Lately, Tracey Stones Productions has been meeting with people about bringing music to their communities. In fact, today is the start of the 2019 concert series for the residents of Fairfield Harbour. We have 15 shows on the books. Some of these events are going to take place in the Community Center on Saturday evenings. Others will take place on Sunday afternoons at Red Sail Park. Tonight we welcome Rubich & Cain in the Community Center for a night of fun music. Next month marks the Sundays in the Park with Big Jim Kohler Band on Sunday, May 26, 2019, at 2 pm

I am still seeking community sponsors for these shows. If you want the residents in Fairfield Harbour to know you are supporting live music then we should talk about putting your banner up on the stages we set. Currently, there is no firm commitment to paying these bands. We are relying on the kindness of others and now in a community that was devastated last year! If you know anything about me, you know I am all about paying the bands for their time. A community sponsorship would allow a fair pay scale and help cover promotional costs. The return is the advertising you get here in the blog and on site where the concerts take place.

My Mission With Big Jim

54407630_1014752018735979_903738561633714176_o

Friends Forever

Big Jim and I have been on a journey since we met in March of 2013. For a minute there I thought our journey was about to end when my dear blues buddy fell ill in August of 2017. It was a crazy ride for some time while he did battle with pneumonia. In an effort to help him through we that, the amazing medical team at CarolinaEast had to put the bluesman in a coma to help him combat his addiction with alcohol. Big Jim makes no secret about his love affair with beer and whiskey for 30 years. A love affair that ended after the disease nearly claimed his life in 2017.

When pneumonia nearly took him from us, I prayed for God to keep him here. I sat by his side, playing music in his ear and promising him that if he fought for his life, I would stay the course and build a stronger healthier music community in his honor.  My daily work with music has been happening in his honor since his 50th Birthday, September 1, 2017.

The Crawl and The Comeback

After a long road of addiction recovery, knee replacement surgery, and battling the blood sugar bounce,  Kohler emerged back on our local scene on April 11, 2018. He performed his first gig in front of the Black Cat Shoppe on Middle St for ArtWalk.  It was the greatest joy my heart had known in more than 8 months. Big Jim was playing the blues in New Bern again!

Part of the hope in his return is advancing beyond the New Bern scene. He is a seasoned pro with many years logged with a few awesome national blues acts. There are times and seasons in everyone’s life where there is a need for reflection. Big Jim has now moved beyond those moments and has emerged, sober and stronger than ever before. I thought that would be enough for our community to rally behind him in support of getting him back in the studio.

PLEASE! Help Us Pave The Road Ahead

Having said that, Kohler created a Kickstarter campaign at the end of February which will be shut down in 10 days without the promise of a product because we did not meet the goal. I cannot tell you how frustrating this is for me, so I can’t even imagine how disappointed Jim must feel.  I know I was stoked about it and thought his goal of $4,000 was a reasonable one to meet.  It breaks my heart that we did not rise in the first week to meet him in this need. After two months we are still short! Given how much he has done so much for this community with his music, I thought for sure, we would return the favor to our own father of the blues.

Thus far 19 backers have pledged $1711.00 to his $4000.00 goal. That means we have 10 days to raise just under $2300.00 and the bluesman’s spirits. If we meet him in his need he will return the pledged with a great new blues project. We are all ready for that! This will also give us both a product to push him back on the national blues circuit. We are both ready for the ride, we just need the help of the community to gas up the engines! Please take a minute and pledge your support for more Big Jim Kohler music by visiting this link:

Back On The Scene With Tracey Stones

It’s like I never left!

Reunions are the theme of the week and every time I hear about North Carolina Bands reuniting, I usually hear about memories of long ago when bands played at two very popular rooms. The Attic was in Greenville, NC and was the work of Joe Toronto and his team and The Redneck Saloon in Grifton, NC.  In fact, the two girls that would tell these tales most often oare my friends pictured above, Madonna Hawks and Belinda Barr.

Shad Festival Rocks Music Fans

As we walk into festival season, we stop in Grifton for the 2019 Shad Festival where The Wannabees delivered the Classic rock and Jesse Bolt returned to stage to rock crowd for the first time in years.

The Wannabees Warm the Stage With Classic Rock

Generally, when I attend a show where the New Bern based band, The Wannabees are sharing the bill, I make it just in time to see the exit the stage. Luckily, this was not the case on Saturday night as I got to enjoy the last handful of songs they offered the gathering rock crowd. The quartet of classic rockers always delivers a polished set of popular rock tunes that fans enjoy! They sounded great on Saturday night dishing out the Tom Petty and rocking to the beats of the Beatles!

The buzz on the street though was the news that Jesse Bolt would be returning to rock the stage at the 2019 Shad Festival. Since I was not covering the NC scene in the ’70s I had to admit, quite often lately, that I never heard of the band. But I took plenty of time to talk to my local friends about the act as we awaited their return to the bright lights of the small town that once housed these rockers regularly in a bar known as The Redneck Saloon.

The  Return of Jesse Bolt

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Regardless of who I asked, the answer was the same, “These boys rocked the NC scene back in the day!” Jesse Bolt emerged onto the scene in 1974 and gained popularity quick.  They received enough recognition to find themselves on the touring circuit, opening for bands like U2, Kiss and Black Sabbath.

In fact, while chatting with founding member Keith Stacy last night I learned, that the band is  “currently bringing more of our original songs back…we (my brother Don and I) have a vast catalog of songs,” Stacy said. “I think Kiss was actually influenced by one of them.” He explains, “We played with Kiss at the Charlotte Coliseum in 1976. The next day at breakfast at the hotel, Gene asked our drummer, Max, ‘what was the name of the 3rd song you played?’ Evidently, they liked the dead stop in the song. They then came out with Stole Your Love…which also has a dead stop.”

As it was; this band was put together for the Festival in the hopes of bringing the band back to the scene. Stacy admitted that the guys I saw did not have much time logged together and the next time the band would be tighter. Frankly, I thought they were a fun rocking act with a lot of guitar waves to work out. Jan Fields accepted the role as frontman and rehearsed just one time with the band and their new bass player, Jim Hunter, may have had two rehearsals under his belt!

For those that are looking for the band so to reminisce the days gone by or find out the news on the road ahead be sure to find them on Facebook by clicking here

Reunions Are Always Fun for New Bern’s Delta Bones Band

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

While we are on the subject of reunions of sorts, let’s keep that groove going as we revisit the blues of The Delta Bones. This was a popular band that played here in New Bern on the regular, some 20 years ago. Today the guys gather for an occasional show and such was the case this Thursday, when they returned to the Piano Bar at Captain Ratty’s Seafood and Steakhouse to perform for the supper crowd.

Guitarist and original player, Ed Ruiz, is the one who reached out and asked me to come out for a night of fun and good music. I was obliged by the invitation and accepted. He had told me about the band in the past. But, since writing the blog, this was the first time they regrouped in the area for me to catch a sample. It was a great night of fun music made by longtime friends and music making brothers.

Generally, the line up includes Mike McCully on guitar and lead vocals, Tom Small on harmonica and vocals, Ed Ruiz on the guitar a, Tom Dunn on bass and Zach Meadows on drums. With Meadows out of town on Thursday, they called in Glen Druhot to fill in the backbeat, which he did with ease and grace.

Thank You For The Love and Attention You Have Passed My Way

Community Celebrations and Rock Legends Return to the Stage For Saturday Fun

On the Scene With Tracey Stones

It was Community Fun for all and Rock Legends that offered the good times on a great day and rocking night!

Community Comes First

Last weekend many town-folks gathered at Creekside Park in James City, for a Saturday afternoon to celebrate the resiliency of New Bern and Craven County! The event was organized by Ina Thomas. She was motivated and inspired like many of us were by the amazing outcome of the Casey Hathaway story where the 3-year-old Craven County boy went missing and was found alive in the woods three days later.

The news story of Hathaway and his family and our local Sheriff’s Department gained national attention, as did our city of New Bern after it was truly devastated by Florence in September. Life does not always offer us rays of hope. Sometimes the clouds of dark blanket news coverage, in case you missed the headlines!

When Hathaway was found alive, after three days of being a lost little boy during a cold snap this winter, it was a miracle that filled all of our broken Florence hearts with love and made us forget our troubles as we breathed in faith and exhaled hope!! God is so amazing! He is here in our City of Bears and He walks with each one of us that are lost and in need. He is a busy miracle worker and He delivered to the masses on that one! Well done! In the name of Jesus, Amen!

Thomas wanted to honor Sheriff Chip Hughes and his team of officers, and the many volunteers that turned out and came together for our local area in recent times. Not only for those that helped find Hathaway for his family, but also those that came to our area to assist in our recovery after Florence truly devastated our corner of the world! A mission that still continues with new immediate needs as time wears on!
