The Blues is Alright!

On Sunday evening I was offered a great treat, when David Russell brought his Port City Blues Band to the Bern. This big band blues outfit hails from Wilmington, NC and are fine examples of young players keeping the blues alive. Nothing delights me more than to hear younger blues players offering authentic takes on our nation’s historic music and offering  it to the world for the delight of new audiences.

Russell has been playing guitar for the past 8 years and has been a blues enthusiast since hearing BB King, when he was a boy child about 8 years old. Currently the band is keeping very busy in their stomping grounds of the Port City Wilmington, NC, but look forward to branching out. They are seeking opportunities to the west in our own state and south, like Georgia, and South Carolina. They would happily travel north too, as they did last week.

This is a show stopping festival band. They offer a great mix of authentic blues standards and original music, that feels heavy in the history of the blues. When they came to town at the end of last week, there were six players, all tight and on the money.  Russell goes out with as many as seven players and always has a great rotation of ace players ready to roll. He says when you are interested in keeping the band full, you have to work with a rotation of players when you are working with so many people’s schedules.

To check out the band and to keep up with where they are playing, find them on Facebook by clicking here:

The appreciation for the blues runs long and deep my soul. I may never get over my love for this music, as it has the greatest effect on my spirit. Along the way I have made some great friends on the blues circuit. A couple of my long time blues brothers from Pa, came to town to visit just last night and I got to enjoy their show at The Blue Note Grill in Durham, NC.

Live on stage for another show stopping set of guitar driven blues, was the Skyla Burrell Blues Band, with special guest and long time friend from up the North, TA James, who now calls NC home, much like myself. It was an awesome night of bonding souls with music. I knew it would be worth the mid-week journey! This four piece blues outfit offers lots of stinging guitar leads, with chops that swap between lovers on stage and off. Skyla Burrell and Mark Tomlinson put on a fiery show of guitar greatness. On bass is the steady hands of Charlie Hilbert and behind the kit from MD is Ezell Jones.

I met Tomlinson and Hilbert  nearly 25 years ago when they played with another guitarist out of PA. Back in 1994 when we met they, were The Blues Mission. So of course I made it my mission to check in with my old sweet friends. It is always refreshing to see their friendship is still holding true and steady and still on a blues mission…and one like never before.  Currently they are traveling south to offer a sizzling show to the lucky listeners in Florida this weekend and hitting Georgia on the way back North!

Do yourself a favor and check out this rockin blues outfit.  Should you get the chance, they are worth seeing live! I promise they will send you out with a boogie in your step!

Nora Jane Struthers has written “some of the most quietly powerful narratives within the new wave of Americana artists,” says Ann Powers of NPR Music. The songs that last
decades and weave themselves into the fabric of listeners’ lives are usually the ones in which an artist lays her soul bare for the world to hear. Struthers’ new album Champion, due out October 13 on Blue Pig Records, is built on these kinds of songs.

The 13-song collection is the follow-up to 2015’s Wake, which earned Struthers acclaim from major outlets like NPR Music, Rolling Stone Country, and “Fresh Air.” Struthers wrote and recorded the album with her longtime road band the Party Line and the chemistry between her and the other players is palpable.

There’s an honesty and energy to Nora Jane’s stage presence; a vulnerability that is part and parcel of great artistry. In one moment, she joyfully leads the audience in a dance party … in the next, she lays her soul bare for the world to hear. A performance by Nora Jane and her band is full to the brim with stellar musicianship, unexpected arrangements that blur the lines between folk, roots, and rock, and an audible sense that everyone in the room is having a damn good time.

Come enjoy this artist tonight live at Isis Music Hall, 743 Haywood Rd, Asheville, NC. Show starts at 8:30 pm and music plays til 11 pm. Tickets are $12.00.

~ On The Scene With Tracey Stones ~

On Saturday evening I took a pause for the cause and headed to Fall Ball 17. This annual event is hosted by Randy Gary. These fun times are really a way to raise money for The Edgewood Community Developmental School. In all there were seven acts on the bill. I was invited by Second Helping. Hundreds from the surrounding communities came out to enjoy the night of great food cook off’s and awesome music.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

When I arrived on site, Brad Benson & The Rebel Armada were crushing the crowd with their spellbinding rock. The Kinston native now calls Cary, NC home and he keeps busy playing solo acoustic and powerhouse trio shows, much like what I saw at Fall Ball 17. To check out his music and to keep up with this busy player please stop by and visit his website.

Following Benson’s set Kaylin Roberson took the microphone and brought down the house with her amazing take on the Star Spangled Banner. Making it even more moving, it was Veteran’s Day still with many Veterans standing among us. God Bless our Veterans and our great land.

Next up, I saw many of my friends finally come together to perform as one unit, Second Helping. This is an awesome tribute band offering the sounds and songs of Lynyrd Skynyrd. The ten piece outfit featuring three guitarists upfront and three female vocalist in the background also features keyboard, drums and bass. and lead singer at the helm. This unit is comprised of players from Lenoir and Craven counties mostly. They offered a great set of the band’s most well-known songs.  To keep up with the band, check out their website

Following another stage turn out Katlyn Roberson returned to the stage, with her full band to bring an energetic and fun set of music. The talented young singer is based out of Raleigh, NC, who offers a cross between pop and country sounds. To learn more about her music and to find her around the area, check her website at

On my way back to New Bern I took a slight detour to check in with my side project. The Adam Hill Band was live at The Red Room and rocking Kinston, NC. The boys were very busy last weekend with three gigs in a 24 hour stretch!  The guys offered a rocking set for the Homeless Vets of Craven County, at the Rocking Relief Benefit at the VFW in New Bern. The band hit the stage at 1 pm for a great showing of rock done right. They made it to town following a long night of rocking Suck Bang Blow in Murrell’s Inlet, SC Friday night.

One thing is for sure, when you offer up so many shows in such a short time, it is hell on the vocal chords. Luckily Hill has many talented friends and throughout the night he offered many of those in-house a shot at the microphone. First up was his cousin, TJ Lanier, next up came the famed singer for Mason Jar Bonfire, Nick Mason (not pictured above, as I went live on Facebook for his country offering.) Also helping out was the vox of J Lane, who also crushed it while I was in the house.

For those looking for the Adam Hill, be sure to keep up with his website by visiting

The Garage, 110 W 7th St, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, has two bands Demon Eye – Demon Eye was unearthed in Raleigh, North Carolina during the Spring of 2012. Shortly thereafter, the band was receiving international recognition for their highly acclaimed songcraft and their stunning live performances. Demon Eye channels the introspective darkness of Pentagram, the heavy grooves of Black Sabbath and the fist-banging shred of early Iron Maiden. They have shared the stage with the likes of Corrosion of Conformity, High on Fire, Spirit Caravan, The Sword, King’s X, Loincloth, YOB, Witch Mountain, Lord Dying, and many more of their heavy brethren. Demon Eye has been featured in Iron Fist UK, Classic Rock Magazine, Premier Guitar Magazine, Terrorizer, Metal Temple, and Destructive music, (the latter of whom claimed the band is “as close to musical perfection as it is humanly possible to get.”)

In early 2014 they released their Soulseller Records debut, “Leave the Light,” which met with excellent worldwide reviews and earned them festival invites to play alongside the best of the best. Three years into their career, they released their second album, titled “Tempora Infernalia,”which brought them to even wider audiences and solidified their fan base within the international metal community at large. Demon Eye remains hellbent on bringing their hook-laden, dark riffin’ songcraft to fans far and wide.
Lords of Mace – Sludgy and southern with a twist of doom on the rock.

Up Next

Come back tomorrow for some talk about the blues as I tell you about the two hot blues acts I caught up with in the past several days.

On Sunday evening I closed out my weekend with David Russell & The Port City Blues Band who brought it to New Bern, NC with their fun show and full band that was full of the blues. This band is out of Wilmington, NC and worth checking out any time you can.

Tonight I will be heading to Durham to check in with old friends from PA and music brothers, Mark Tomlinson and Charlie Hilbert. I have known these brothers of the blues for two and a half decades and currently they are cutting it with killer guitar girl Skyla Burrell. Come out tonight Durham if you can. This is a show you won’t want to miss. As mentioned above they are live from 8-11  pm at The Blue Note Grill, 709 Washington Ave, Durham, NC.

The last time the band was in our state it was Aril and they played at Mother Earth Brewery in Kinston, NC. They are a smoking hot blues outfit that don’t make it this way near enough. It is always good news when they hit the road to FL since it is a great stop for anyone coming from the PA region.

Here is where my friends to the south can find this hot blues act in the days ahead

Brad Benson

IMG_2933 (2).JPG

Following Benson’s set Kaylin Roberson took the microphone and brought down the house with her amazing take on the Star Spangled Banner. Making it even more moving, it was Veteran’s Day still with many Veterans standing among us. God Bless our Veterans and our great land.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Second Helping

They made it to town following a long night of rocking Suck Ban Blow in Murrell’s Inlet Friday night.

One thing is for sure, when you offer up so many shows in such a short time, it is hell on the vocal chords. Luckily Hill has many talented friends and throughout the night he offered many of those in-house a shot at the microphone. First up was his cousin, TJ Lanier, next up came the famed singer for Mason Jar Bonfire, Nick Mason (not pictured above, as I went live on Facebook for his country offering.) Also helping out was the vox of J Lane, who crushed it.

For those looking for the Adam Hill, be sure to keep up with his website by visiting

On The Scene With Tracey Stones

I headed to Murrell’s Inlet, SC for the night because Adam Hill Band was scheduled to rock at Suck Bang Blow, which they did, more on that in a moment.

First I grabbed a bite to eat at King St. Tavern where I checked out the grooves of Austin Perry. Perry hails from the Myrtle Beach area but is quite familiar with NC as that is where he attended school. Currently the artist stays busy most nights of the week sharing his songs in bars and restaurants. Not a bad way to work it! If you’d like to learn more look for him on Facebook under Austin Perry Music and give his page a like.

*********

My next stop brought me across the street from my final stop for the night. I checked out the scene at The Whiskey Fish Tavern and they had it going on with Joe’s On Call, giving up the beats for the party crowd. This trio was working hard for their pay, with the drummer not only kicking the beat but also offering all of the strong vocals too. If you get around the way and want to see a fun band look them up for a good night out.

************

Last but not least I closed out the night with my favorite rocker around the region. Adam Hill Band rocked Suck Bang and Blow last night for a good crowd of familiar faces. It was wonderful to be so far from home and see so many awesome supports we know from home. On behalf of the band, Thank you for all who made the journey. They think you rock! The Adam Hill Band has two more gigs today and I have more on that and other gigs now!

Nothing thrills me more actually than watching the dance floor fill, while Hill offers one of his own songs. This artist is amazing and beyond an average talent. Please check him out soon and rock your soul right. The music charge for tonight’s show is $5.00 and tips are also greatly appreciated.

Heading in a different direction, Tiffany Elaine who rocked New Bern last week for Lily Fest 2017 for the Coastal Women’s Shelter, will be back on the clock tonight and bringing her music to the folks at The Flying Monkey, located at 6250 B NC 11 South Ayden, NC. Come meet her and Jimmy Kennedy tonight as they play from 9 pm til midnight!

Blues on My Mind

There are two great blues acts that I want to draw your attention to, so if you will please:

23244068_10155486310410073_6331340824614273660_n.jpg

First I ask that you dress to stay warm and join me tomorrow evening at Circa 1810 Restaurant & Bar at The Harvey Mansion, 221 S Front St., New Bern, NC, as the sun sets on another fun music weekend with David Russell and The Port City Blues Band, in town from Wilmington to rock your blues away from 5-8 pm.

For blues fans around the Triangle, be sure to come out and say hey to my friends from up the north, Skyla Burrell will be back in North Carolina with her band of blues misfits that will melt your soul. If you missed them in April when they lit Kinston ablaze, be sure to spend some time in Durham this Wednesday night. Burrell and her boys will be at The Blue Note Grill, 709 Washington St., Durham, NC Music plays from 8-11 pm and the admission for the sow is $8.00. The food is awesome and I recommend doing dinner and a show anytime you head to this venue.

This Friday happens to also be the second Friday of the month and another installment of ArtWalk in Downtown New Bern, NC. If you decide to stroll the street, here are some must see moments…

Check out the “Critters”Exhibit at Craven Arts Council, 300 Pollock St., New Bern, NC. If you happen to see my friend Laura Gammons nearby, be sure to say hello, she has some neat pieces on display. I am a huge fan of the Einstein Egert she named No Egerts! The Violin King that stole my heart, is actually the Lizard King (not unusual for me to get someone’s name wrong…) and he definitely plays my heartstrings. Many other artists will offer their displays for the collection, so stop in and enjoy some cheese, wine and awesome art designs. The Exhibit will be be available for all to enjoy this month. So if you are out of town during ArtWalk, there is still time!

While walking the streets be sure to head up Middle Street and check things out at The Black Cat Shoppe, where James Ford will be offering a full acoustic show from 5-8 pm. Stop in, meet the artist, check out the cool things found throughout the store.

On Sunday afternoon I found myself in Greenville and after having lunch with my Pirate, I headed over to Greenville Commons to check in with Adrian Watts who was showcasing the John Paul Catholic High School Jam Band. Watts and his many students played for several hours for the community event that promotes healing services for families struggle with drug and alcohol issues and more. It was a great day and I had great fun check out the band Watt has been working with since this past Summer when school was back in session.

The reason I mention this is because the band will be opening a fun night of Pirate Nation Celebrations at TieBreakers, 1920 Smythewyck Dr, Greenville, NC. Carolina Lily Fest Line Up 2017

On Saturday night I spent most of the night in the company of awesome talent. With giving hearts of many wonderful women, who offered up their talents for a night of raising money and awareness for the Coastal Women’s Shelter via, the 3rd Annual Lily Fest which is presented by GEM Productions. This event featured many great local talents that all played in support of this worthy cause.

While out and about for the night, I got to enjoy dinner with Alisa Mike. Although I missed her opening set, I am sure her voice was as smooth as silk. This hard-working singer is taking some time for herself these next few weeks, as she recovers and heals from knee surgery which she underwent this week. Mike is the front woman for Zen Pirates and plays several solo shows monthly. Expect her return after the holiday season and in the meantime keep her in your prayers.

22338859_181335815748273_5957774588879843320_o

Carolina Sky offered the folks a fun set of acoustic sounds that filled the room. After a few technical difficulties the girls played their hearts out.

IMG_2263 (2) - Copy

The first act I had the pleasure of hearing was Suzanne Madea, who offered a wonderful set of soothing sounds for the growing crowd that gathered in support of a great cause.

IMG_2273 (2) - Copy

Holly Millar is an awesome, young, up and coming star raised here in New Bern. She delighted the crowd with a powerful set of original music

Next up was the fiercely talented Tracey Brenneman, who also offered a full set of mostly original compositions. Included in her set and closing it out, Brenneman offered her newest song “Me Too”, written weeks ago in response to the #MeToo movement and outpouring.

IMG_2321 (2)

Throughout the course of the evening there were raffles and prizes given aways. There were many cool items donated, including a house party with local band Bearfoot Monty, jewelry, artistic creations, a home brewery gift set and so much more…

IMG_2343 (2)

After the first round of raffles were distributed, it was back to the music with Maegan Jackson andIIayali Valdéz. The young duo gave up a great set of music, that they made you feel… as more gathered for this great cause.

DSCF2979
Gabrielle Christie

The audience was then given a powerful set of original music courtesy of Gabrielle Christie, who has been working hard this past year with Barefoot Monty as vocalist and bass player. It had been a while since we were treated to Christie solo and although she claimed to have jitters it was not evident in her show.

IMG_2422 (2)

Tiffany Elaine came to the stage next with her set of mostly original music. She had the crowd moving and grooving along.  Jimmy Kennedy represented the male population as he took to the stage in support of the Coastal Women’s Shelter, located in New Bern.

Closing out this night of great NC talent on display for an awesome cause was none other thanLaura Reed, a powerhouse full of the blues and other mind bending grooves. Sharing the stage with her dear friend and musical sister, Miquela DeLeon,  The duo offered a show stopping set that displayed their love of authentic blues in the way of Muddy Waters, as well as great original tracks that offer glimpses into a truly creative soul that is full of talent and awesome presence.

Born in Johannesburg South Africa and with roots that raised her in Nashville, North Carolina has been blessed to have her as their own for some time now. Making a life in around the Raleigh area, Reed is well worth checking out, even if it means road trip. To learn more about her visit her website, buy her music and go out and support this awesome artist. You won’t be disappointed. See her in action for yourself!

Natural Born Leaders // Hip Hop, Gumbo Funk, Soul // 9:30pm
Natural Born Leaders (NBL) is a hip hop and soul prog-rock band based out of Asheville NC. They are fueled by the abstract, socially driven, and smooth and at times gritty, poetry-like vocals from Mike Martinez and hard hitting funky dankness of the rhythm section. They may be directly influenced by bands contrasting in range from The Fugees to Nirvana but their music displays links to everything from jazz to blues, to Afro-Latin and jam music. All blended into a soulful explosion of colors, powerfully painted in the raw form of hip hop and soul.

David Dyer & The Crooked Smile Band will be live tonight at Sugar Magnolia Cafe, 219 South Front St., Wake Forest, NC. This evening is being presented by The Wake Forest Listening Room and here is what elses I learned on the event page:

David Dyer and the Crooked Smile Band is comprised of all seasoned vets, including local guitar legend Bernie Petteway (3PM, Stringfellows, the Bernie Petteway Trio, etc…), Nashville pedal-steel and multi-instrumentalist/vocalist session and touring professional Allyn Love (10 years in the Grand ‘Ol ‘Opry, toured with Brad Paisley, Sara Evans, Reba McEntire, JoDee Messina, Steve Wariner…), David Dyer (acoustic guitar and vocals…also writes most of our stuff), and Ken Weigand (bass and vocals). We typically play as a string quartet yet when we need a drummer we bring in Fran Dyer (amazing composer and multi-instrumentalist who has played with Brown, Zone Rangers, Carnevelito, etc.).

As independents, our 2nd and 3rd records have both done well selling nearly 10,000 copies with over 500,000 downloads. Radio and Internet airplay yielded 1 song licensed for ABC network television, and 3 songs reaching the top 25 (1 at #12) on European Americana Charts. ReverbNation recently ranked us 3rd in the overall Triangle market and #1 in the Americana Genre.

We typically play around 24 dates a year ranging from festivals (Shakori Hills, Azalea Festival, First Night, FloydFest, MumFest, Lazy Daze, Carousel Festival…), Concert Series (Greenville’s Summer in the Park, Wake Forest’s Six Sunday’s in Spring, Greenville, SC’s Fall for Greenville…), Arts venues (NC Museum of Art, NashArts, Fletcher Opera Theatre…) and then a couple corporate events, fundraisers and weddings to round out a year.

The Violin King that stole my heart is actually the Lizard King (not unusual for me to get someone’s name wrong…) and he definitely plays my heartstrings. Many other artists will offer their displays for the collection, so stop in and enjoy some cheese, wine and awesome art designs. The Exhibit will be be available for all to enjoy this month. So if you are out of town during ArtWalk, there is still time!

*************

While walking the streets be sure to head up Middle Street and check things out at The Black Cat Shoppe, where James Ford will be offering a full acoustic show from 5-8 pm. Stop in, meet the artist, check out the cool things found throughout the store.

After the first round of raffles were distributed, it was back to the music with Maegan Jackson and IIayali Valdéz.

Closing out this night of great NC talent on display for an awesome cause was none other than Laura Reed, a powerhouse full of the blues and other mind bending grooves.

Please take kindness with you today and hug strangers. Don’t forget that life is short and could end in a moment, so make sure you take time to enjoy the dance. Party safely people! We love having you here with us! You rock, so don’t roll the car! Rely on sober friends, call a cab or sign up to Uber around!

Send all of your event invites to me on Facebook, so I know where you are playing in the days ahead. I can be found on Facebook by following this link:

https://www.facebook.com/TraceyStones69.

I also read emails daily. You can send those to:

tracey.stones.writer@gmail.com

Please include the day, the date, the time of the event, the time of your scheduled performance, what time doors open and the price of tickets. Pictures are also helpful. I share links to band websites, so send those along as well. Thanks so much for taking the time to fill me in on the details, together we will reach the people!
