On The Scene With Tracey Stones
There was plenty happening around town last weekend, with MumFest rolling through our downtown New Bern. Many folks gathered on the great south lawn of The Tryon Palace, for a Friday night concert brought to us by Swiss Bear and the many sponsors that help make MumFest possible.
On the bill at The Brown Pelican last Friday was a double feature, featuring two local players. First there was Dan Jam with none other than Dan Jam Phillips leading the way. He was joined by Scott Carlisle on electric guitar, Al Gleason on acoustic and vocals, Dan Jam Phillips on guitar vocals and an occasional percussion. From 5-8 pm they rocked the early crowd, with many great classics for the 60’s and 70’s. They were also joined by local chef and caterer Vincent Farro who offers great music too.
Next up, I swung by the Isaac Taylor Garden to check out a new band in town, Caffeinated Soul Boogie. A trio of players that are now my new example of why, players looking for bands mates need to attend open mic nights. This band came together via the monthly open mic night held at Trent River Coffee Company. On vocals is Darria Yeager, assisting on acoustic guitar is her father, Derrick Moore and back behind the kit and occasional on acoustic and vocals, is host of the monthly open mic night Matthew Kerlin. Keep your eye peeled for more from this trio. They have a date at Harvey Mansion coming up on Sunday, November 5, 2017. Mark the date, dress warm and come enjoy some great music outside this fall.
After checking in with the latest band to hit the New Bern scene, I headed back to The Brown Pelican to see the second act on the double feature bill. That is when I got to check in with Buck Loy, a local stringer that was giving up the grooves for many a dancers. Make plans to spend Christmas Eve with Loy on the patio at Harvey Mansion.
One of the great things about this city is, that there are strummers and stringers all about and on Friday I found one in Bear Plaza. Charlie Duzan Sr. is an awesome talent familiar to the streets of New Bern. When I passed him by, he was deep in the blues and giving my soul some much-needed music therapy. You can actually check him out tonight when he plays at The Thirsty Bruin, 224 Middle St., New Bern. He will be rocking the room from 8-10:30 pm tonight and this show is free!
Speaking of such, my fourth stop on the night brought me to The Thirsty Bruin, on Middle St. Where I got to hear a few great original numbers by local talent Aaron Davenport, who offered his music to fans from 8-10:30 pm.
My final stop of the night was to check out Limited Engagement, who engaged the people gathered on the patio at The Harvey Mansion last Friday night. This band is fairly new to the scene and gaining quite a lot of momentum, as they make their way around the downeast region of NC.
Tomorrow night the band will be heading to The Red Room located in Kinston, NC, to play in place of Jim Kohler. LE actually boasts Kohler’s rhythm section, so when Kohler fell ill, we secured two gigs for his rhythm section to fill, so that he would still be paid for the gigs he had booked when he fell ill.

On Saturday it was finally time to experience the music of good vibes of MumFest 2017, which is exactly what I did.
The first act I caught up with was Joe Baes Project! These guys rock and offered a lot of sounds that became popular in the 90’s. The band performed under the Miller Lite tent during the early afternoon hours on Saturday and the crowd rocked right alongside them for their fun set.
My next stop was to see Carolina Sky Acoustic Bluegrass Duo, live on the patio at Harvey Mansion. The two players gave up the grooves from 12 pm til 4:30 and enjoyed a great time under the tent. I look forward to bringing the full band back in the months ahead.
On my way back through town, I stopped back at The Miller Lite Beer Tent to check in with Carolina Dare. This young singer/songwriter is wonderfully talented and making quite a name for herself around our area and beyond. She offers the sounds of country music and attracts new fans with each show she puts on. The 16-year-old performer hails from Greenville, NC and is currently working her way through high school.
After leaving the beer tent I took a stroll up Front Street and headed down Middle Street, to check out the familiar family band, Strung Together. I made it just in time to catch their final two songs. This band was born and is being raised right here, as the Oliver Family shares their children, their music and their faith with our community. They performed to a full house and I was grateful to catch the end.
When I emerged from the Bank of The Arts performance, I heard music beckoning from just across the way. That is when I found out about the unnamed tent with live music offerings all weekend long. Interesting about this is, no one knew about it. Nonetheless, I found it and when I did, it was another dose of Limited Engagement, the dead tired day version. These guys are full of energy even after they expended it all the night before. They rocked under the tent for a couple of hours, giving up the party hits everyone loves.
The next performance at The Bank of The Arts was that of jazz outfit that goes by the name Onslow Winds, INC. They are a full and big band, complete with drums, bass guitar, piano, a sultry singer and lots of wind instruments, that all come together nicely to make beautiful sounds. It was great fun to catch this ensemble of players. Since they are a large community touring act, they accept donations year round as well. If you are a music lover and appreciate a full and rich sounding band, you can contribute to their success by sending in your donations to Onslow Winds, Inc.; P.O. Box 572; Jacksonville, NC 28541.
In the heat of the day, I found Rob Lightner and Nathan Shaffer acting up and giving a great show to the crowd gathered under the Miller Lite Tent, with their dynamic offerings of classic rock and country music. I did a little bit of boot scooting myself in fact.
Of course will walking around, I ran into many a character and story tellers too. MumFest offered a little bit of something for everyone and a lot of great food for anyone who was hungry.
The final show under the Miller Light Beer Tent for Saturday was, the funky rocking grooves of The Soul Psychedelique Orchestra. This good time band hails from the Triangle region and gives up a fun show with great vocals and harmonies as well as dancing on stage, which makes you want to dance right along. It was a great choice for wrapping up the first full day of MumFest
Each week I ask my talented Facebook friends to tell me where they will be performing and here is what they told me this week. Please get out and support live music this weekend. These bands work hard for your good time.
To keep up with this good time band that offers a great selection of music for any occasion follow them on the web at
The final show that I caught in New Bern Saturday night was that of Joe Brown. I grooved along to Brown’s first set as people made their way in from off the streets and got down with the fun sounds of Joe Brown and The Band. It was a great night for the folks at The Harvey Mansion. The people danced and sang along throughout the night. This New Bern based band is available for parties, weddings, and all other special occasions, as well as club bookings. To keep up with them follow them on Facebook at
The last band that I caught on Saturday will be the band that leads us into the next section. The Adam Hill Band was rocking last Saturday at The County Line Bar & Grill. Where I got to catch up with owners Ed and Trisha, who are doing a great job of feeding their community, good food and great music each and every week.
In fact, tomorrow night they will be bringing Rural Route Romance to the house for more great food at 8:30 pm and music starting at 10 pm. Ladies in for free til 9:30, $5.00 cover for all after that. Remember also, BROWN BAGGING IS WELCOME! The County Line Bar & Grill, 9527 Highway 903, N Ayden, NC.

The Heart of Music
If there is one thing that I love about our music community, it is how they get together for great causes anytime, anywhere! In the weeks ahead, there are many great examples of this and since they are all worthy causes, I am inclined to tell you about the following events.
Tomorrow morning you can join forces with our area bikers, who will roll out from Harley Davidson of New Bern, Highway 70 East, New Bern, NC, for the 9th Annual Breast Cancer Ride. They will raise funds to be donated to our local chapter of Journey of Hope for Breast Cancer, patients right here at home. Registration starts at 9 am and kickstands up at 11 am. Return to Harley Davidson of New Bern after a scenic ride and enjoy lunch, free prizes, free lunch and a great band to rock you into your late afternoon. Music will be welcoming the bikers back and rock them til 3:30 pm.
The Adam Hill Band will also be performing that evening on the patio at The Harvey Mansion, located at 221 S Front St., New Bern, NC. The great people at Circa 1810 Bar & Restaurant have agreed to also collect funds, to be added to the day’s total for the 9th Annual Breast Cancer Ride. Music for this part of the program will start at 8 pm and conclude at 11 pm. Please come out to one of the two events featuring this rocking band offering up their best for a great cause!
Another rocking event that shines a light on the heart of musicians is that of Lynwood Stock, which is taking place at The DoubleTree tomorrow night from 6pm til 11pm. This event will be held in the ballroom at the hotel on S Front Street and will feature three hot area bands, coming together to raise money for a local family doing their own battle with cancer.
Besides working hard on stage, with two rock bands, Josh Overby works hard daily at our local hospital. One of his friends and co-workers there, was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer after just having a child. To help the family cope with the overwhelming costs, Overby approached his close friends and band mates about putting together a concert.
This event will offer tickets at the door, the cost for the event is $25. The full ticketed price will be donated to the family in need. On the bill for your rocking pleasure are Take Two, who will open the show at 7 pm, followed by…. all aboard for all things rock with The BiPolar Express and closing out the night with great selections of classic rock, will be the music of 3 Day Weekend.
Since we are shining a light on great events and I know my readers have hearts of gold, I want to take a minute to give you some advanced warning on a few great events to help local charities in our area. First up on Saturday, November 4, 2017, is Carolina LilyFest 2017 a Singer-Songwriter event, with a spotlight on the ladies as GEM Productions. The people of Bernaroo Music and Arts Festival will raise money for the Coastal Women’s Shelter.
GEM Productions is proud to announce that Carolina Lily Fest returns for its third year on November 4th, as New Bern’s marquee outlet for the celebration of powerful women in our community. Each year, Carolina Lily Fest hosts countless female musicians, artists and vendors, who donate their time and efforts to raise money for the Coastal Women’s Shelter. The sole provider of no-cost comprehensive domestic violence services in Craven, Jones, and Pamlico counties. This year’s event will return to The Brown Pelican, for an evening full of female empowerment for a fantastic cause!
This year’s event will be headlined by the incomparable Laura Reed, a Raleigh-based R&B/Folk artist, with a breathtaking voice and soulful musical arrangements. Reed has garnered international acclaim for her work. Working with Grammy-award winning producer Shannon Sanders (India Arie/ John Legend / Robert Randolph) on her most recent full-length and opening for the likes of Miguel, India Arie, Anthony Hamilton and more. Reed’s music lands somewhere between pop, soul, blues and R&B to make for a unique and captivating sound all her own.
Carolina Lily Fest is open to any female performers, poets, arts or crafts vendors, who would like to participate. If you’re interested in joining us as a part of Carolina Lily Fest, send an email over to email@example.com.

The event will be held on Veteran’s Day and it will offer five area bands that will rock your socks off, including Gypsy Sunrise, The Adam Hill Band, Limited Engagement, Peace Soldier and more.
