On The Scene With Tracey Stones

I checked in with Adam Hill on Thursday evening when he played at North Street Pub and Eatery. Located at 115 W North St., Kinston, NC; this place recently had to close for some renovations after the rain last month. Owner Nicky Rapoza hosted the re-grand opening earlier this month and opened the doors to serve patrons again more great food and awesome live music.

Personally,  I love the new look and set up. Rapoza is working on other areas of the establishment, so to host more live music. This of course, is music to my ears. Where there once was an arcade and gaming room, there will soon be a live music room. It’ll be exciting to see those changes as they develop and you know who will bring them to you all along the way!

Fun Time Friday

Before heading out to music last night, my artist friend, Laura Gammons, suggested that we check out her friend and mentor’s gallery. This art exhibit is in The Sanctuary Gallery located on Trent Road, New Bern, NC. There is a lot to look at and above you can read the story of the artist, as well as the exhibit site. Chris Wagner had a great hand in making this gallery space which displayed many of his works throughout. Stop out and enjoy taking in the art that decorates this spot beautifully. …And Now Back to the Music

If you recall, I went to band rehearsal the other night to check out Peace Soldier. This is a newly reformed old band with new members assisting the founder of Peace Soldier Nation, the Peace Soldier himself, Bobby Hurff.

Last night at the Craven County Fairgrounds the band opened the night of festivities, with a great set of rocking music that was familiar to fans of classic rock of the 60’s through the 80’s. The band has several dates next month but the one I really wish to turn your attention to is the event Hurff has organized for our area’s homeless Veterans.

This year on Veterans Day, Saturday, November 11, 2017, has organized a full day of fun and music at the VFW off Old Cherry Point Road, New Bern. Tickets are $20 and you get five great bands, lunch and the benefit of helping Hurff get Vets off the street and into safe warm spaces this winter. Tickets can be purchased in person at Fuller’s Music Store on Trent Road, New Bern, NC. You might opt to shop online and if you do you can get your tickets here:

https://www.peacesoldierband.com/online-store

On the bill will be Tommy Duzan Sr. opening ceremonies with our National Anthem. Followed by music from Gypsy Sunrise, Adam Hill Band, Limited Engagement, Smokehouse and Peace Soldier all ready to rock for some relief. Come out this Veteran’s day starting at noon and enjoy a good time helping out the people who fight for our freedoms. God bless our troops and our Veterans.

Once I hit town I had to stop by to check out Brian Burke, this one man band is full on fun and talented. He offered up the great grooves at The Thirsty Bruin last night. He provided the music from 8-10:30 pm and the crowd enjoyed the sounds.

Burke hosts the open mic at Backwater Jack’s Tiki Bar & Grill, 1052 E Main St., Washington, NC, on Thursday evenings from 6:30- 9 pm, if you are interested in jamming with him sometime soon. The Pebble Beach Stage is an outdoor venue and will be soon shutting down for the season, but the restaurant is great all year round and the owners rock. This was one of the first venues I frequented when I started out with the blog. The food and service are amazing, so stop by soon to support.

Coming up on the immediate calendar for Burke is The Buccaneer Music Hall, 2021 E Fire Tower Rd., Greenville, NC, tomorrow evening from 9-12 pm and at Winslow’s Deli 120 W 5th St.,, Greenville, NC this Wednesday 8-11 pm.

******************

My next stop brought me The Brown Pelican, where people we get down with the fun and unique, yet familiar sounds of The Raucous Brothers. They had people on the dance floor from 7-10 pm last night. The duo is comprised of local resident and Pelican employee Patrick Edwards on drums and his longtime friend from Virginia, Paul Bison on guitar and vocals.

Live tonight from 8-11 pm you can check out Hot Head Ted, a new trio based out of New Bern and making their debut tonight. The Brown Pelican is located at 411 Broad St, New Bern and offer music three nights a week starting on Thursday with open mic from 8-11pm. Stop out say hi to the staff and enjoy the great vibes of live music.

*******************

The final stop of the night brought me to The Harvey Mansion, where I enjoyed the rest of the night dancing to the blues beats of the fun Feral Cats. Always a pleasure to catch up with this band that I am proud to represent. The Lenoir County band got together nearly a year ago for a party. The friends had such a great time making music that they named the band and currently they play many weekends each month. They will be making their return to the patio, on Wednesday, November 22, 2017, for a pre Thanksgiving show. Mark the calendars now and meet us there.

Last night the band gave away prizes in celebration of Halloween. They offered other treats too and special guests also joined the fun on stage. To keep up with their grooves follow them on Facebook or check out their website at

NCMZ.LIVE~ NC’s Best Source for Live Music Options and Local Band News

IMG_2409On the Scene With Tracey Stones

Welcome back, and thanks for rocking around the music scene with me for another week. Last weekend I caught up with several bands from our area, as they gave up their good music for friends and fans alike.

On Friday night I got the pleasure of listening to the powerful sounds of Tommy Duzan Sr., who offered his song selections to the good folks at The Thirsty Bruin, located at 224 Middle St., New Bern, NC. This fun beer and wine store and bar is open daily and serving local made products daily. They also offer live music each Friday from 8-10:30 pm.

For those interested in catching Duzan practicing his sharp skills on six string, be sure to mark your calendars for December 1 and enjoy the sounds of Duzan on the patio at the Harvey Mansion, 221 S Front St., New Bern, NC.

*****************

Speaking of music on the patio, last Friday they feature the original music of a former New Bern Based band, The Fearless Freaks, who disbanded when player Kenny Castania moved north to enjoy the coolness of PA winters. He returned for a visit and rocked the crowd with his good friends and band mates.

The other players include Parker Millar on vocals and guitar and Jake Ross back behind the kit. Millar and Ross also make music in the band The Dick Richards.

When I spoke with Millar earlier in the day he let me know that he will be heading out with his new band Spaghetti, for a show at The Cat’s Cradle in Carrboro, NC. They will be making their debut this weekend and I will share more on the band as time unfolds. What I will say for now is, the band features Millar teaming up with his sister Holly Millar.

**************

I got to enjoy a fun set of groovy music at the Brown Pelican, where Bearfoot Monty organized a one year anniversary show that included themselves closing out the night, Mandy Mead opening and in between they served Hot Buttered Grits.

*************

Bearfoot Monty is a fresh, young band based in New Bern, offering great rocking original music with blues and southern rock overtones layered throughout. They have many influences at work and you hear them all nicely blended in their music. They take flavors of funk, grunge and classic rock and layer it on a bed of blues and serve it up for souls to enjoy! This project came together not long after Bernaroo 2106, when Justin Hargett approached Gabrielle Christie about working some music out, before long two grew to four and the band Bearfoot Monty played. Their music will grab you and groove you. Currently the band is hard at work recording their debut EP for fans to enjoy.

Saturday was a real feel good day. The Adam Hill Band performed at the 9th Annual Breast Cancer Benefi,t which raised money for the third year of New Bern’s Journey of Hope Cancer Support Center. The event was hosted at Harley Davidson of New Bern. Riders paid a registration fee, went on a scenic ride, took a short break and returned to HD of NB for lunch, raffles and giveaways and great music. The best part of this event is how the money raised stay right here, helping our local warriors as they kick cancer’s butt! Before leaving the event, organizer Paul Brown asked if we could provide entertainment next year and I assured him NCMZ.LIVE and Adam Hill would be there to represent.

***************

The charity work continued on Saturday night with a three tiered bill at the DoubleTree, coming together in the ballroom for one great night of music and memories all for the simple sake of helping a local family doing their own battle with cancer.

Josh Overby keeps busy on our music scene cutting chops with two area rock bands. However when he is not busy making music with BiPolar Express and 3 Day Weekend, he is logging hours at the local hospital. When his co-worker and friend Lynwood Goff, a new father, got sick and diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, Overby jumped into action to organized a concert event called Lynwoodstock. to raise cash for the family. The ballroom filled with good hearted New Bernians who rocked the night away.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Opening the event was music by Mark Sheldon and Les Wetherington with their Take Two act. This acoustic duo have been life long friends and music has always been a part of the journey. Following their 45 minute set, the stage shifted and The BiPolar Express, with Overby on guitar and vocals, Wick Wickline on bass and Mike Lancaster on drums, a powerhouse trio that rocked the crowd right and hard with with great mix of songs from the hair band rock era of the 80’s and 90’s.

Following their set came the close out of 3 Day Weekend, who took the crowd back through the 60’s and 70’s with their song selections. The most moving part of the night came when Wetherington, a cancer survivor now twice waging war against the disease, moved the crowd with his own story and launch into a great rendition of Don’t Stop Believing. It was inspiring and moving to watch most in the room rise and dance.

IMG_1507 (2)

For those who could not make it out to LynwoodStock but wish to see the BiPolar Express, you are in luck. Because the boys will be rocking the at the beach tomorrow night, when they play at Off the Hook in Morehead City, NC. Music for that show starts at 9:30 pm and the rock grooves go til 1:30 am. You are encouraged to dress for Halloween as this is the weekend we are allowed to dress for the fun of it!

**************

Following the Breast Cancer Benefit Ride at the Harley shop, The Adam Hill Band set up for work at The Harvey Mansion where they rocked the patio and took in another $40 for the Journey of Hope Cancer Support Center. Adam Hill and I both lost our Grandmothers to this disease, so taking part in events to hel  is personal and important. It was an honor to be a part of the event and help raise money for such a worthy cause.

img_1319_std.original

The Adam Hill Band is off tonight, but tomorrow you can rock the night away in full dress at Maynard’s Entertainment, Highway 55 East, Seven Springs, NC. The band will be rockin’ the house for Halloween ,so come out in full dress and try to impress. Top Prize winner receives $300, second place gets $150 and third place walks away with a $50 spot in their hands. Music starts at 10 pm and it is $10.00 at the door. Maynard’s is a BYOB establishment.

********************

It has been more than a decade since the one man band known as Barefoot Wade has visited New Bern for the sake of sharing his music. On Sunday, October 22, 2017 he gave up a great show on the patio at The Harvey Mansion for friends and fans alike. This guy does it all. He loops all of the instruments, play, sings and keeps you entertained with stories from the road, as he sets up each song before he launches into singing the selections. His set list offers a blended mix of familiar covers and fun original music. He has a merchandise table up front featuring three discs for sale and T-Shirts. If you have not seen this cat play, come down to The Harvey Mansion on Sunday, December 3, 2017 for another fun show of tropical music to usher in the winter season.

New on the Scene

There is a new bar getting set for their grand opening next week. In case you have not heard the news, I am here to report that John Morgan has worked out a deal, with the owner of LaRosa’s Italian Restaurant, to lease the bar portion of the business. Under Morgan’s ownership the establishment will be named One Eyed Jack’s and it will be serving up drink specials, offering karaoke and live music too. I stopped by on  Wednesday after catching wind of this rumor and caught the first open mic event in house.

While in the house I enjoyed the music of local stringers, Aaron Davenport, Tom Spellman and Justin Hargett, who hosts the event each week. The music started at 10 pm and it lasted til closing. For players looking for a stage to work things out, we now offer One Eyed Jacks as an option. Located on Glenburnie, it is at the far end of the parking lot near the Fuel Warehouse. The hours of operation will be 3 pm – 2 am Monday -Saturday and 1 pm – closing on Sundays. Stop by and wish John Morgan the best in his new venture.

More on MumFest 2107

Turning our attention back to MumFest 2017, there is still plenty more to say. This two and a half day event wrapped up on Sunday, October 15, 2017.  Making for another full day of fun with music beats and great bands.

I made it back to town to enjoy some sweet sounding blues courtesy of John Emil, who kicked things off under the Miller Lite Beer Tent. He offered his set at noon and gave up a great show to the early crowd under the tent. To check this player out be sure to visit his website at

http://www.johnemil.com/

****************

After a great set of blues, I set to the streets to see what else I could find and before I knew it I was hearing live music again. This time it was James Ford jamming solo under the tent near Broad and Middle St. He gave his all to the early crowd that gathered for some shade and his sweet sounds.

Tonight James Ford will be performing with his band, Limited Engagement at The Red Room, located at 220 N Herritage St., Kinston, NC. Music starts at 10 pm and the jams go til 2 am. This trio of players boast two-thirds of Big Jim Kohler’s Band, so when Kohler fell ill, I secured his booked gigs for LE to play under the agreement that Kohler would be paid for the job. Tonight is the first of two dates at this venue for this cause.

****************

On the patio at Circa 1810 Bar & Restaurant at The Harvey Mansion, 221 S Front St., New Bern, NC, there is a special MumFest Brunch, with New Bern based trio, Casablanca. The talented three piece offered a great afternoon set of old world music and jazz standards to keep people swinging to their groove. The band features Simon Spalding on guitar violin and other strings, Tom Spellman on acoustic guitar and Glenn Druhot  on drums, bongos and percussion.

*******************

Since I brought up the subject, let’s turn our focus to the master of strings, world music and rockin’ good times. Simon Spalding stays very busy with many projects. Just in a week’s time I have seen him with his jazz ensemble, Casablanca, paired up as a duo with Tracey Brenneman last night, performing at Trent River Coffee Company on Craven St.

Last night was a rather incredible display of talent and grace, as Brenneman offered the audience her new song inspired by the #metoo movement spawned this week. This one moved me to tears. This is very personal for me, and to hear her add the touches of love and grace to such a dark subject offers me even more hope that these clouds of secrecy that blanket sexual assault are lifting and soon conversation, education and change will take hold so that there will be #NOMORE #METOO in the years ahead!

Turning our attention back to Spalding, today he will be jamming at The Havelock Chili Festival taking place this weekend, with his band The Bears. They kick off their oldies set at about 1:30 pm and will rock’em til they dance! Following that show, Spalding will load his gear and head to the crystal coast for an evening solo performance at Cru Bar & Wine Store ~ Beaufort Coffee Shop; 120 Turner St., Beaufort, NC. Music for that free show starts at 8 pm and Spalding promises to take you around the world in 80 tunes and with many instruments.

Another rocking event that shines a light on the heart of musicians is that of Lynwood Stock, which is taking place at The DoubleTree tonight from 6pm til 11pm. This event will be held in the ballroom at the hotel on S. Front Street and will feature three hot area bands, coming together to raise money for a local family doing their own battle with cancer.

Besides working hard on stage with two rock bands, Josh Overby works hard daily at our local hospital. One of his friends and co-workers there was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer after just having a child. To help the family cope with the overwhelming costs, Overby approached his close friends and band mates about putting together a concert.

This event will offer tickets at the door and the cost for the event is $25. The full ticketed price will be donated to the family in need. On the bill for your rocking pleasure are Take Two, who will open the show at 7 pm, followed by…. all aboard for all things rock with The BiPolar Express. Closing out the night with great selections of classic rock, will be the music of 3 Day Weekend.

On The Scene With Tracey Stones

IMG_1051

There was plenty happening around town last weekend, with MumFest rolling through our downtown New Bern. Many folks gathered on the great south lawn of The Tryon Palace, for a Friday night concert brought to us by Swiss Bear and the many sponsors that help make MumFest possible.

On the bill at The Brown Pelican last Friday was a double feature, featuring two local players. First there was Dan Jam with none other than Dan Jam Phillips leading the way. He was joined by Scott Carlisle on electric guitar, Al Gleason on acoustic and vocals,  Dan Jam Phillips on guitar vocals and an occasional percussion. From 5-8 pm they rocked the early crowd, with many great classics for the 60’s and 70’s. They were also joined by local chef and caterer Vincent Farro who offers great music too.

****************

Next up, I swung by the Isaac Taylor Garden to check out a new band in town,  Caffeinated Soul Boogie. A trio of players that are now my new example of why, players looking for bands mates need to attend open mic nights. This band came together via the monthly open mic night held at Trent River Coffee Company. On vocals is Darria Yeager, assisting on acoustic guitar is her father, Derrick Moore and back behind the kit and occasional on acoustic and vocals, is host of the monthly open mic night Matthew Kerlin. Keep your eye peeled for more from this trio. They have a date at Harvey Mansion coming up on Sunday, November 5, 2017. Mark the date, dress warm and come enjoy some great music outside this fall.

************

After checking in with the latest band to hit the New Bern scene, I headed back to The Brown Pelican to see the second act on the double feature bill. That is when I got to check in with Buck Loy, a local stringer that was giving up the grooves for many a dancers. Make plans to spend Christmas Eve with Loy on the patio at Harvey Mansion.

*************

IMG_0611.jpg

One of the great things about this city is, that there are strummers and stringers all about and on Friday I found one in Bear Plaza. Charlie Duzan Sr. is an awesome talent familiar to the streets of New Bern. When I passed him by, he was deep in the blues and giving my soul some much-needed music therapy. You can actually check him out tonight when he plays at The Thirsty Bruin, 224 Middle St., New Bern. He will be rocking the room from 8-10:30 pm tonight and this show is free!

***************

Speaking of such, my fourth stop on the night brought me to The Thirsty Bruin, on Middle St. Where I got to hear a few great original numbers by local talent Aaron Davenport, who offered his music to fans from 8-10:30 pm.

*****************

My final stop of the night was to check out Limited Engagement, who engaged the people gathered on the patio at The Harvey Mansion last Friday night. This band is fairly new to the scene and gaining quite a lot of momentum, as they make their way around the downeast region of NC.

Tomorrow night the band will be heading to The Red Room located in Kinston, NC, to play in place of  Jim Kohler. LE actually boasts Kohler’s rhythm section, so when Kohler fell ill, we secured two gigs for his rhythm section to fill, so that he would still be paid for the gigs he had booked when he fell ill.

♠ ♠ ♠ ♠

On Saturday it was finally time to experience the music of good vibes of MumFest 2017, which is exactly what I did.

The first act I caught up with was Joe Baes Project! These guys rock and offered a lot of sounds that became popular in the 90’s. The band performed under the Miller Lite tent during the early afternoon hours on Saturday and the crowd rocked right alongside them for their fun set.

****************

My next stop was to see Carolina Sky Acoustic Bluegrass Duo, live on the patio at Harvey Mansion. The two players gave up the grooves from 12 pm til 4:30 and enjoyed a great time under the tent. I look forward to bringing the full band back in the months ahead.

*****************

On my way back through town, I stopped back at The Miller Lite Beer Tent to check in with Carolina Dare. This young singer/songwriter is wonderfully talented and making quite a name for herself around our area and beyond. She offers the sounds of country music and attracts new fans with each show she puts on. The 16-year-old performer hails from Greenville, NC and is currently working her way through high school.

**************

After leaving the beer tent I took a stroll up Front Street and headed down Middle Street, to check out the familiar family band, Strung Together. I made it just in time to catch their final two songs. This band was born and is being raised right here, as the Oliver Family shares their children, their music and their faith with our community.  They performed to a full house and I was grateful to catch the end.

**************

When I emerged from the Bank of The Arts performance, I heard music beckoning from just across the way. That is when I found out about the unnamed tent with live music offerings all weekend long. Interesting about this is, no one knew about it. Nonetheless, I found it and when I did, it was another dose of Limited Engagement, the dead tired day version. These guys are full of energy even after they expended it all the night before. They rocked under the tent for a couple of hours, giving up the party hits everyone loves.

**************

The next performance at The Bank of The Arts was that of jazz outfit that goes by the name Onslow Winds, INC. They are a full and big band, complete with drums, bass  guitar, piano, a sultry singer and lots of wind instruments, that all come together nicely  to make beautiful sounds. It was great fun to catch this ensemble of players. Since they are a large community touring act, they accept donations year round as well. If you are a music lover and appreciate a full and rich sounding band, you can contribute to their success by sending in your donations to Onslow Winds, Inc.; P.O. Box 572; Jacksonville, NC 28541.

************

In the heat of the day, I found Rob Lightner and Nathan Shaffer acting up and giving a great show to the crowd gathered under the Miller Lite Tent, with their dynamic offerings of classic rock and country music. I did a little bit of boot scooting myself in fact.

****************

Of course will walking around, I ran into many a character and story tellers too. MumFest offered a little bit of something for everyone and a lot of great food for anyone who was hungry.

***************

The final show under the Miller Light Beer Tent for Saturday was, the funky rocking grooves of The Soul Psychedelique Orchestra. This good time band hails from the Triangle region and gives up a fun show with great vocals and harmonies as well as dancing on stage, which makes you want to dance right along. It was a great choice for wrapping up the first full day of MumFest

Each week I ask my talented Facebook friends to tell me where they will be performing and here is what they told me this week. Please get out and support live music this weekend. These bands work hard for your good time.

To keep up with this good time band that offers a great selection of music for any occasion follow them on the web at

http://thesoulpsychedelique.com/

*************

The final show that I caught in New Bern Saturday night was that of Joe Brown. I grooved along to Brown’s first set as people made their way in from off the streets and got down with the fun sounds of Joe Brown and The Band. It was a great night for the folks at The Harvey Mansion. The people danced and sang along throughout the night. This New Bern based band is available for parties, weddings, and all other special occasions, as well as club bookings. To keep up with them follow them on Facebook at

Joe Brown & The Band on Facebook

**************

IMG_2323[1].JPG

The last band that I caught on Saturday will be the band that leads us into the next section. The Adam Hill Band was rocking last Saturday at The County Line Bar & Grill. Where I got to catch up with owners Ed and Trisha, who are doing a great job of feeding their community, good food and great music each and every week.

22519069_1913892368930794_5826720011694572233_n.jpg

In fact, tomorrow night they will be bringing Rural Route Romance to the house for more great food at 8:30 pm and music starting at 10 pm. Ladies in for free til 9:30, $5.00 cover for all after that. Remember also, BROWN BAGGING IS WELCOME! The County Line Bar & Grill, 9527 Highway 903,  N Ayden, NC.

The Heart of Music

Just to break it down, be sure to walk about town and take in the sounds of our many street musicians who will be found here and there, in front of storefronts, on corners and in the alley ways too, around Bear Plaza for example. We have a talented group of citizens and many of them will be on display for you to enjoy. Be sure to take the time to visit the Beer Garden on Craven and Front and Bank of the Arts on Middle, both offer local and live music offerings for all to enjoy.

Believe it or not, I know many of the bands playing on these bills and wherever you end up, you will be delightfully entertained. I just wish someone from our MumFest Committee  would let me assist this town in setting times and music schedules. It would be a lot different and there would be an opportunity for every artist to be seen, by any serious music fans in the crowd. I feel they are doing the performers an injustice by scheduling like events (such as live music events) at the same time in different locations. Since cloning did not catch on, people still can’t be at two places at once, just ask the blogger who tries! I bet I catch most acts as well as a few in between.

Speaking of the in between, let’s walk through the town and highlight the live music options taking place in our bars and restaurants here around town.

Music Fun at The Festival ~ 31st Annual NC Seafood Festival, Morehead City, NC

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Hard to believe that it was a full 12 hour day, covering the 31 Annual NC Seafood Festival in Morehead City, NC, last Saturday;  but it was, and I stayed entertained from the moment I arrived until the minute I left. I got there just after 11:30 am. In time to park and make my way over the Beer Garden that Charlie Weatherby created for his patrons and guests outside of his establishment, Off The Hook on the corner of Evans and S 7th St., to hear Adam Hill Band rock it. What a great way to welcome day two of a 31-year-old tradition, I thought to myself as I watched this band wow the crowd.

This was a last-minute booking for the band. Back in July it looked like they were playing and then in August they were not and then they were and weren’t again in September. Though that was frustrating, the frustration ended last week when I got a call from Weatherby looking for a band.

Adam Hill Band is my ace in the hole band. I still am just as excited to be working for Hill, as I was the day I first heard him in Havelock last summer with the band Solid Ground.

He has grown a lot in this past year of focusing on his music. For me, being a fan a killer guitar players, it has been a great trip getting to know this star player. His music captivates as much as his playing skill. He grabs people with his sounds and I saw it happen last week for hours on end!

Even though Noon starts are always slow starts, when one plays til 2 am the night before, has to travel home, grab a nap and then roll again. After the first ten minutes of crossed wires and loose connections they were rolling and rocking the crowd. I gave out a handful of cards and received compliments on the band the entire time they were on the stage. They even had the kettle popcorn vendor playing air guitar with his stirring oar. It truly was an exciting way to experience the Seafood Festival.

This weekend you can find the band playing live at The Beauty & The Beast Car Show, taking place at The WalMart on Yopp Rd., Jacksonville, NC. The car show starts at 10 am. Music starts at noon with rocking it til 4 pm. Following their time there, they will pack up and head out to Ayden to rock the folks at The County Line Bar & Grill, located on Highway 903 N Ayden, NC. They rock that room from 10 pm til 2 am. There is a $5 music charge at the door. Ladies free til 9:30 pm. Free meal being served at 8 pm and BROWN BAGGING IS WELCOME!

Following Hill’s show I wandered around the corner to check in with Hank Barbee and The Dust Parade, who were accompanied by students from the Pamlico County High School Jazz Band and they offered a great show as well. It was an awesome set of seasoned players working with students, bringing them to new levels on their music chart.

Barbee was also a last-minute change in the schedule for the Tight Lines Brewing Co., located at 709 Arendell St., Morehead City, NC, but a phenomenal choice always.

He is riding the wave of the vinyl release of his latest recording Son Royale, released earlier this year. Last night the band did a show at the Annex of The Brooklyn Arts Theater in Wilmington, to offer the world its limited edition vinyl version. The singer songwriter has three more shows in our area, then hits the road to release the vinyl in Georgia on a southern states tour.

Tonight you can find him with his trio in Atlantic Beach, NC, where they will perform at Idle Hours Biergarten right there on the circle. Come enjoy Barbee and the band from 6-9 pm while enjoying some awesome pretzels, supper and fresh brewed beer. Tomorrow he will be solo at NorthStar Cafe in Jacksonville, NC, where he plays from 8-11 pm and on Sunday afternoon he will be on the patio with the trio at The Harvey Mansion, 221 S Front St., New Bern, NC from 5-8, wrapping up MumFest 2017.

*****************

I saw while writing my blog for Saturday, there was going to be a blues band on stage at The Coastal Stage, just before my friends 3 Day Weekend took to closing out a full day of festivities under the tent.

This authentically unique blues band is a trio of retired Marines, that rocked my soul with their offering of traditional blues and blues rooted rock music. Carolina SwampDogs have been jamming for the past four years. The trio calls Jacksonville, NC home and together they have 85 years of combined service to our country. That just made them even more incredible to this girl. Gary Oles offers vocals and harmonica as well as percussions, Tommy Langlois plays the guitar, bass and snare drums with his feet and sings backup and occasional lead vocals. Over stage right was bass man Matt Ingram keeping everyone locked in the groove. Those grooves are very traditional in blues and long on celebrating the history of the music. And as long as there are still young people in the crowd dancing, these boys help keep the blues alive. That is something I am passionate about myself.

Before they packed up and headed home, I spoke with Oles and Langlois before they rolled out and expressed an interested in having the band come to New Bern, NC. The following day, we set up having the band play on the patio at The Harvey Mansion, 221 S Front St, New Bern, NC. Mark your calendar for my Christmas gift to you. It’ll be a blues Christmas, Carolina SwampDog style, on Saturday, December 23, 2017. Music will play from 8-11 pm and you won’t want to miss it! Expect to hear more about this trio of Marines now that they are in my scope!

The next act under the tent was the closing act for the night and dear friends of mine,  New Bern’s own; 3 Day Weekend. They rocked the close out of day two, at the Coastal Stage, for the 31st Annual NC Seafood Festival.Offering the best in southern and classic rock from the 60’s 70’s and 80’s. They offered up the songs that got people dancing to their sounds.

This band is always fun and offers the talents of seasoned players. On guitar and vocals is Josh Overby, on lead guitar is Mark Caraway, on bass guitar and vocals is Les Wetherington, on keyboard is John Thomas and sitting behind the kit for the night was the incredibly talented Grier Crawford, best known for keeping time with Sutter’s Gold Streak Band.

22291503_1800614089979330_1424974766651598180_o.jpg

The next big show for the band will be, a triple bill of New Bern based talent with three bands banding together to raise money for a local family. This event is being billed as Lynwoodstock and is taking place at The DoubleTree in Downtown New Bern, on Saturday, October 21, 2017. Tickets for the event are still available and 100% of the ticket sales will be given to Lynwood Goff’s Family. Co-worker and friends of Josh Overby, this was a bill put together with the purpose of the proceeds going to help this family.

For your entertainment you will enjoy a set for the acoustic duo, Take Two, featuring Les Wetherington and Mark Shelton on guitars and vocals. Next get ready to be rocked like only The BiPolar Express can prescribe. This trio of rockers includes Josh Overby on guitar and vocals, Wick Wickline on bass and vocals, and Mike Lancaster with backing vocals behind the kit on drums!

My next stop along the way was Southern Salt Company & Waterfront Restaurant, 701 Evans St. Morehead City, NC, offering music fans the fun sounds of SwivelHip. A fully charged five piece band that offer great funk, soul and party songs to keep folks lively on the dance floor. This party band is out of the Raleigh area and here is more on their story from their Facebook Band page:

Up and down the east coast from NYC to Miami, somewhere between the Outer Banks and the Appalacians, SwivelHip can be found serving up some of the finest live music you will find anywhere. SwivelHip is comprised of five seasoned, accomplished musicians, each of whom brings a different element of talent to the band, and all of which combine to form a tight wall of sound. Lush pads from the keyboards, smooth moving bass lines, screaming guitar leads, and explosive rhythms and drum beats accompany some of the best vocals you’ll find anywhere. On and off the stage, the members of SwivelHip have bonded over time and grown together to become a solid, polished group of professionals recognized around the region.

Band members include:

Patrick Murphy – Drums

If you are ready to dance and have some fun, be sure to check them out soon.

My final stop of the evening brought me full circle back to Off the Hook where I had a great time grooving with another Lenoir County based rock cover act, The Roman Sams Band. They offered a great show for fans out rocking the night away, under the stars on the deck. It was a great day and night of awesome music and
