Blues at The Brown Always A Blast!

It never gets old, this Monday Night Blues Jam at The Brown Pelican, hosted by Bear City’s King of The Blues, Big Jim Kohler and the boys. Always helping him on the killing floor are rhythm makers, Tom Parker on the drums and bass player Chris Buttitta.

Among the many jammers, we got to enjoy was Gordon Graham on harmonica, Phillip Alcock on the bass, Jonathan Peck and John R. Williams worked on their six-string skills.

It’s always fun to watch the people dance to the music and let their hair down. Come on out tonight and have a natural ball! Make a plan to join us this or some other Monday night. We promise to rock your blues away! Music plays from 7-9 pm.

The Brown Pelican is located at 411 Broad St., New Bern, NC. They are a private club. If you are not a member, stop by, fill out the membership form and pay your annual fee of $1.00. It might just be the best dollar you spend all year!

Another Good Dollar Deal

Mid-Week Music at City Stage, New Bern

The mid-week blues break was a little bit different this week at The City Stage New Bern. The band used the opening hour of last Wednesday evening as a dress rehearsal for their opening set at The State Theatre in Greenville, last Friday night.

Once they ran through the set-list that they were to unleash on the crowd that gathered for Joanne Shaw Taylor, a British blues babe with some serious guitar riffs, they opened the stage to jammers.

Joining  BJK on stage for the mid-week blues jam last week was, David Sawyer on the harmonica, Phillip Alcock on bass, Jonathan Peck on guitar, Simon Spalding on the electric fiddle, and last but not least, rocker Gary Dudley came up and shared the stage and used the Big man’s guitar! All in all, it was another great night of fun logged in the books at City Stage. The City Stage is located at 901 B Pollock St., New Bern, NC and is also a private club. This event is free but the state rules require you to sing up and pay a $1.00 annual fee for membership.

Big Jim Gets A Break and Time on the Big Stage

It’s always exciting when a sound check is a part of the plan.

As an agent and an advocate for many music makers, it is always good to get a call for an opening act opportunity. Word came our way about two weeks ago that Big Jim Kohler would open the show of Joanne Shaw Taylor.

Believe it or not, our friend Big Jim is already accustomed to big stages. He spent many years on the road touring with blues royalty. First as the backup band for his mentor, Son Seals and then with legendary Byther Smith. He has swapped chops with other mighty men and calls well-known slingers good friends till the end!

After raging a war against his addiction to alcohol, Kohler has combated the illness with sobriety and the blues. He has also worked hard in losing weight to head off the diagnosis of diabetes and works on gaining strength every day still. Since coming out of his medically induced coma nearly two years ago, the blues-man has been working hard to get back in the game and these days he is sounding and looking better than ever.

On Friday night Kohler stepped out on stage and wowed the crowd with a clean and searing set of Chicago style blues. Before the night was over Kohler invited his wife to the stage to offer one song. “I’d Rather Go Blind” was the tune that Kathy Kohler slew the crowd with.

To check out that offering straight from the stage to our souls…visit this link:

Joanne Shaw Taylor on Tour and Sharing her Reckless Heart

Joanne Shaw Taylor is a British based guitar player deep in American Blues traditions. Inspired by many American blues stringers, she has an affection for Texas stylings and is out on tour in support of her six release, “Reckless Heart.”

According to her bio on Wikipedia the 33-year-old is influenced by some of my favorites, she lists Stevie Ray Vaughan and Albert Collins and Jimi Hendrix, she was discovered by Eurythmics guitarist, Dave Stewart and has been chasing her music dreams since joining his super group in 2002.  Her first release, “White Sugar,” was released on Ruff Records and her latest release is with Sony Music.

She made her way across the pond in 2017 headling her first US Tour and this year she’s doing it again. The band has a lot of stateside gigs and some are major music festivals, including Peach Festival in Scranton, PA this August. To check out all of the bands’ dates and enjoy Taylor’s music, visit:

4 Of A Kind Line the Stage at AJ’s Last Friday

Following the show at The State Theatre, I ventured around other parts of the city to see who else was playing. Stopping at AJ McMurphy’s I found a fairly new band lining the stage. 4 of a Kind was offering familiar sounds to the crowd when I entered the bar and restaurant.

Offering a folk-infused set of mostly country and pop songs, they have great harmonies and enjoy making music together. The quartet is working on putting together more shows and when those are announced I will share them with you right here.

R.T. Johnson Band at The Buc Closes Out Friday Music Fun

My last stop in Greenville, NC brought me to Buccaneer Music Hall to check out R.T Johnson Band. They are a country band offering their own songs as well as many pop, rock, and country favorites. Working things out with a new rhythm section the new band line up features Shawn Mitchell on bass and backing vocals and Jeremy Lowery on drums.

Currently working in the top tier of the state, the band is based in Askewville, NC and is planning on making more appearances in our area. In fact, they have some dates in August that bring them to New Bern, Havelock, and the Crystal Coast. In the meantime, for those looking to check out this band on the scene, you can find them this week offering the grooves at The Sage Festival in Windsor on Friday, June 7th at 6 pm.

Before that big event, RT and Braxton will be swapping chops this Wednesday evening at Tavern 125Music will be offered from 7-10 pm. To learn more about the band you can find them on Facebook and give them a Like!

Saturday Sends Us Beach Bound for the Blues

IMG_8251[1]

After such a wonderful start to the weekend, I had to stop in to check in with my blues crew. Big Jim Kohler Blues Band had an engagement at Cru Bar and Wine Store/Beaufort Coffee Shop.  When I got there they were turning things up on Turner St. and giving the people a good reason to get up and dance.

Coming up this weekend the band will be rocking two new juke joints for their events schedule. First, the head to Surf City to give it up at  J.M.’s Place Pub on Friday, June 7, 2019, with music starting at 9. On Saturday they head to Jacksonville, NC for their debut at Nick’s Blacksheep Tavern. Located at 1140 Old Maplehurst Rd., Jacksonville, NC they offer music from 9 pm until the midnight hour.

 Rock Sounds Start with Nantucket

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

As we all know by now, this next band is pretty much NC’s rock n roll royalty band. Nantucket is out on the road sharing songs for the Summer season. On Saturday night the band offered a solid show of rocking tunes to fans and friends that gathered at Salt Bar in Emerald Isle last Saturday evening. Offering all of their hits and a few fine cover songs, this band is a staple on our local music scene.

Following the show, they stayed busy selling merchandise to eager fans. This band formed in Jacksonville back in 1969, making them a staple on our scene for my entire life. Nowadays the band offers on average two shows a month and always delivers an exemplary set of great rocking grooves.

The award-winning band features the talents of frontman Larry Uzzell, vocals, harmonica, Tommy Redd, songwriter, guitarist, vocals, Eddie Blair, keyboard player, Jason Patterson, drums and harmonies and Walt Garland, lead guitar. Things Got Funky In Morehead City

I love walking into familiar places and finding new sounds to enjoy. That is exactly what happened on Saturday evening when I stopped by my friend Charlie Weatherby’s restaurant and bar Off The Hook in Morehead City. Located at 105 S 7th St, they are in a good location to offer you the freshest catch and the best bands each weekend.

The new band I got to enjoy on Saturday night was a funky foursome known as Al G and Friends. Seems they are more than just friends, judging by the names, they are family too. Check it out, the namesake of the band is Alvin Gist. This is the boss man of the band and the backbeat. He is the lead singer of the band and keeps the boys grooving on the upbeats!  Joe Gist is the man on lead guitar and vocals.

Offering a funky bottom beat, Romero (DC) works the bass guitar and backing vocals. Then there is Darnell. Now Darnell, he is just the keyboard player. Well, at least that is what he told me when I walked on the scene and asked how long before they play. I show up on break often!  Timing is everything and my stinks! This is why I am not in the band, I just chase them!

When I did walk in, my buddy Charlie Weatherby gave me a hug and asked if I ever saw the band. I was excited to say NO! This band is a lot of fun and offer some great grooves to keep the crowd moving and happy!

Al G & Friends Band is on Facebook, so be sure to give the band a Like today and keep it here to find out when they will be around again.

Bryan Mayer at Jean’s on Saturday was Our Night Cap on the Week

On my way back from the beach, I stopped at Jean’s in Havelock to check in with one of the latest 52 Faces of Community. Bryan Mayer was on stage and rocking the crowd at Jeans with his new band. Along with playing many popular hits, Mayer has a song catalog of his own. I happen to like it best when he shares his music. Here is a song he released a few years ago that enjoyed some radio after it’s release. This is his song “Leaving Town”:

For friends and fans of the band, be sure to check them out at an event next Saturday in Jacksonville, NC. The band will be rocking at New River Harley-Davidson for their 15th Anniversary Party. Music at 2:30 pm. The fun starts at 10 am and goes throughout the day.

Class Is Back In Session ~ This Week We Cultivate A Crowd Plus Lots of Live Music

This Music Business. Class is in!

Make Sure You Cultivate A Crowd

IMG_6501 (2).JPG

Not only is it important to hone your skills but it is equally important to cultivate your crowd. Fans are funny. They are the one that likes you the most. Those are the people that pay money to see your shows and give you money to buy your music. They watch videos to see you play your music and they are interested in what’s happening in our life. Fans are an important part of a successful journey. Cherish them and more will come. These are the people that want to support your dreams and visions.

Think of your band as a construction project, with brick and mortar. If you have a bunch of product but no one supporting and buying it, you can build your structure to be a skyscraper of bricks, but after the first storm, you are going to be at ground zero rebuilding the pieces and laying out a new plan. Keep in mind the people are the mortar and the band is the foundation and their products are the bricks.

Your social media presence and your website are the tools you will need to use to keep in touch with your audience when you are off stage. Think of those people as your buyers. Keeping in touch with your buyers, your fans and your supporters is essential to the stability of your plan. Take care of those people. Make them feel special. Invite them into your world and your space. They want to be there.

National Attention

The first example, of a national act or artist who successfully keeps his fans in the know, is Kenny Wayne Shepherd. The blues slinger weighs in with a net worth of a cool ten million dollars. KWS is self-taught and does not read music. He started out in his career as a child and became a star pretty much out of the gate. He was also in the right place at the right time.

He came on the scene five years after the world lost Stevie Ray Vaughan and just when we were ready for a new slinger to hit the scene. Though many did, I could not make a comparison myself of the two, because Stevie Ray led his band in every form and fashion, while Kenny Wayne was more simply the guitar leader for his project. Or possibly I just don’t like comparisons when dealing with individuals. KWS took the number one position on the blues charts with his debut release “Ledbetter Heights.” An effort that replaced SRV’s greatest hits on the chart.

I would say today, 24 years later KWS is fully in control of that role like SRV was before he took flight from here in 1990. Some of the things that KWS does to keep his fans in the know is to maintain a steady presence on social media. He takes his fans into the garage to work on cars or talk about guitars. Sometimes he busts into Guitar Centers in different cities with his singer Noah Hunt and they record snippets of jams to post on YouTube. Shepherd is always up to something and speaking as a top fan of this blues cat, it’s great fun to watch.

When he gets ready for a release, he spends weeks dealing with the press and does an extensive media tour. He gets intimate with his interviews and shares pieces of his soul easily for fans to be a part of the journey with him. Today the guitar slinger is releasing “The Traveler,” his latest band release. To make his fans aware of this effort, he has been making noise on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter since the end of March, taking us on the journey with him.

Local Attention matters

Looking around our local scene, there are a few good examples we can look at as examples. Joe Baes Project always makes their shows fun for the crowds that gather. They play games with the audience, give prizes away and this makes everyone feel included and appreciated. You can check out this band tomorrow night when they hit the stage at The Trading Post tomorrow in Emerald Isle. They offer songs from  6-9 pm.

The Bears are another good example. They get audiences to participate with much the same tactics, like playing trivia with the crowd and calling up volunteers to jam with the band. They offer props like inflatable guitars and the audience loves it. I was speaking with Simon Spalding the bass man for The Bears, (Pictured above) who informed me that he just finished painting fun masks for the band to use as they close out their show with the Kiss classic “I Wanna  Rock n Roll All Night!”

61622459_10217860638362866_5440852506009665536_n.jpg

Another good way to cultivate your crowd, which I touched on above with our national act example,  is to use your social media outlets to connect with fans when you are not on stage. The best local example who is doing this is (pictured below) Justin Castellano. He uses all of his social media platforms to connect with his growing fan base. He will put up a video and then offer his weekly schedule so fans know where to come to hear him perform live. For those looking for this stringer, he has a gig tomorrow night at The Wine Room at Afton Village. Music starts at 8 pm.

You might consider using email blasts each week. I even know a few bands that still mail out monthly postcards to connect to their fans. Whatever way feels the most comfortable to you is the best way to go. Just as long as you can develop a routine of including your fans, your popularity and fan base will continue to grow. Joanne Shaw Taylor with Big Jim Kohler opening the show
Friday, May 31st
State Theatre
Greenville NC
Doors 7pm
Show 8pm

Six albums in, Joanne Shaw Taylor has nothing to prove, but plenty to say. Reckless Heart, the follow-up to 2016’s Top 20 hit Wild, finds the British blues musician in glorious form and a mischievous mood, one minute bearing her claws with catty lyrics, the next deliriously in love.

In several senses, it’s an album of firsts – the first made in Joanne’s adopted home town of Detroit, the first produced by her close friend Al Sutton (Greta Van Fleet, Kid Rock), the first largely recorded live and the first to feature an unplugged solo performance and by chance, a passing train.

But it’s also an album that pulls the past into the present. The good-time grooves of vintage British blues-rock are given a modern makeover, while Joanne’s most powerful, yet intimate vocals to date. Taking their cue from the gritty soul greats (Aretha, Tina, Mavis Staples) she was raised on.

“I’ve never had so much fun making an album,” says Joanne. “I feel like I’ve reached a stage where I can stop worrying about what people think. The older I get, the more comfortable I am with being open and honest. If I’m pissed off, I’ll say it. If I want to be flirty, I will. These days, I think ‘Fuck it, I’m writing that down!’
“Also, as a musician, I’m more confident. I’m now a career artist. People know me – I’m not judged on just one album. I’m allowed to be a bit different every time.”

Born in the Black Country and discovered aged 16 by Eurythmics co-founder Dave Stewart, Joanne has spent a decade releasing increasingly successful albums, touring the world, headlining festivals and amassing awards. Along the way she has won over fans from Joe Bonamassa to Stevie Wonder to Annie Lennox, with whom she performed in front of Buckingham Palace for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee concert in 2012.

In 2014, Joanne’s self-released, fourth album, The Dirty Truth, broke the UK top 40. Two years later, Wild recorded with Bonamassa’s band, which became her first Top 20 hit here. Ahead of recording Reckless Heart, she signed to the recently-relaunched Silvertone Records, now part of Sony Music.

Singing and Dancing at Jams Throughout the Week

This Music Business… Class Is In

I have been in business for myself for as long as I have called Carolina my home! I am dedicated to the cause of connecting people to live music so to support the scene!

Band Business Development

Once you decide that you are going to approach your band like a business, the next step is to figure out what your needs are so that you know how much you need to earn to meet those needs. Many performers forget a few key expenses in this equation. The biggest might be forgetting to charge a reasonable hourly rate for their time.

The time equation is very important since there is more to this than most people see. When accounting for your time, you have to charge something for your road time, office time, as well as the performance. The other thing you need to add into to the mix of the expenses, beyond the cost of your equipment, is the cost of maintaining that equipment as well. Plus don’t forget the essentials that also add up like strings, picks, batteries, tune-ups and more.

All Aboard this Crazy Train!

Now then, once you account for what you need and what you need to charge to meet your needs, you then have to establish how many other people will this project support. Remember, everyone who is on board is in the same boat and their needs are just as important to the equation. So take the time to add up how much time is vested in the project per player and find out what the total needs are. Do not let that bottom line scare you. It is important to see that nuts and bolts of the operation on paper. It is the first step in setting your financial goals.

Always Set Goals and Assign Roles

As mentioned in yesterday’s blog, this endeavor is always a team effort. Even if you are a solo act, you need a team to carry you to the next level. Many serious players often fall back on the solo gig because running the business parts of the operation become easier to manage when flying solo. Many bands mates tend to forget or get sidetracked after the plans of going full time are initiated. It is important to keep on task and meet often, so that all the team members are on the same page. Communication is key to the success of this operation.

How? Who? How Much? To Who?

Here are some important discussions to have. Will the band be self-managed? Will they do in house promotions only? Who will pick up the cost of promotional items, such as an EPK for the band? These are all important conversations that serve bands better when discussed upfront. Don’t be afraid to discuss the money portion of this job, if that is what you intend for your project to be. And everyone must be accountable for their positions. The more you meet and plan for your success, the more likely you will reach your goals. These meetings can be held during rehearsal. If the band does not rehearse, it might be wise to secure day jobs as well for the brightest outcome! CLASS DISMISSED!

Monday Brought the Blues

We started this weekly tradition at the start of February and the fun and excitement continue each Monday, with new slingers showing up to impress the blues master. Music starts at 7 pm with a band set, then it closes out with an hour-long jam of guest players. If you have not been, be sure to join us this week.

Tuesday Offered A Mix Bag At Open Mic in Beaufort

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

It is always a great time when I attend the Cru Bar & Wine Store/Beaufort Coffee Shop’s open mic, which is hosted by the lovely and talented Tiffany Elaine. The singer-songwriter does so much to support live and local music along the Crystal Coast where she roams.

For many months she has been hosting open mic on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. But last week the entertainer added a couple of new open mics added to the regular itinerary, and will now be offering open mic at Cru on the opposing weeks. Which mean she will be there again this Tuesday, promoting the many that come out to support her.

I always get to meet new players at this open mic at the Crystal Coast. Located in Beaufort, NC we meet tourists and newly relocated souls seeking out like-minded, music sharing folks to share time and songs with. Last week was no exception, as we met a few travelers and many locals jammers too. The open mic starts at 8 pm and all are welcome to perform. Each act is allowed three songs or 15 minutes under the bright lights.

Talent Unleashed

This week I had the pleasure of listening to Steve Mehan open the night with his original works. Mehan is a part of Elaine’s band Now or Never and just one of the talents songwriters that is a part of that union. Next up was Jimbo followed by Fernando Rivera, who shared some pieces of his soul. Empty Baggies offered a drug-infused set while Now or Never uplifted the spirits of listeners. Ashton Ward graced our stage and John Durham also got a shot at sharing the stage. Closing out the night was the fun band Smoke n Oakem! A couple of players from that band offered a shot of solo works, as well they included sax man Dakota Newman and bass man Hank who shreds notes on a six-string also.

Tiffany’s Corner

Tiffany Elaine has added two new open mic nights to her monthly calendar. First up she announced “Guys! We have a new place to jam on the Tuesdays we aren’t at Cru! Come check out the K Club at Brandywine Bay in Morehead City, NC.  It’s absolutely gorgeous, they have great food and great drink prices. See you on May 7!” Also new in the mix is Open Mic Wednesdays At The Carolina Wine Mixer ! and that gets underway on May 8, 2019!

img_6062

When she is not hosting open mic nights she is booking and promoting her band Now or Never. Today the band has two gigs, including a show at Humphrey Farm at press time today and tonight it is Now Or Never & Tiffany Elaine @ Pour Haus Pub For Dogwood Fest Music starts at 10 pm. To keep up with her band visit their Facebook Page Now Or Never.

Wednesday Welcomed A Birthday Blues Jam

On Wednesday it was Big Jim and a Birthday celebration at The City Stage for our friend April Sunshine. The night included some great blues, good grooves, close friends and CUPCAKES! Homemade chocolate treats came courtesy of the camera-shy photographer that snapped the above picture of the birthday girl Deborah Shillito. This is another weekly offering that not only shares the traditions of that good blues music, but welcomes players to the stage to jam as well. Music plays from 7-9 pm each Wednesday at the City Stage, 901 B Pollock St., New Bern.

Thursday Kept Us Bouncing About Town

Mad Fiddling For Supper

The Mad Fiddler, Jason Addams was back in town and sharing songs with those that gathered in the Piano Bar upstairs at Captain Ratty’s Seafood and Steakhouse. They started offering live music each Thursday in February and it is a nice addition to the weekly music calendar. If you have been missing the music and you missed the Mad Fiddler, the good news is that there is live music offered each week and the talent of Addams is on display once a month for all to enjoy.  For those that can’t wait until next month, look for him this Thursday jamming tunes from 6-9 pm at Salty Turtle Beer Company

2019 Spring Fair Kicks Off with the Blues

Big Jim Kohler Band welcomed all those that come out to the opening night at the Craven Jaycees 2019 Spring Fair, at the Craven County Fairgrounds on Thursday evening. Gates opened at 6 pm and the music started at 7 pm. The fair is in town until next Sunday, May 5, 2019.

Last night they were going to host the popular local act Joe Brown and The Band, but that show was canceled due to inclement weather. Given that announcement, the band has been rescheduled for next Friday, May 3, 2019. Tickets are $5 at the gate and you can buy bands to ride the rides all day for just $20.00.

Back on My Big Jim Soapbox

We All Love Him!

Have you met my blues brother, Big Jim? This guy is the real deal when it comes to Chicago style blues and he has a long list of songs ready to share with his fans and friends. It has been quite a ride sitting shotgun on this blues journey with this talented slinger, who not only plays the blues but lives them out like a true champion. Jim Kohler moved to ENC in 2011 and just six weeks after settling in with his family they were greeted by the rise of Irene, a Hurrican that washed through their house and washed away most of their possessions. It took them five years to recover and along the way they worked out their sorrows by sharing music with their community. They are the first band to show up at any cause and they are often there donating their time.

We Nearly Lost Him

Before Florence was ever a consideration in our community’s story, there was another story that was penned about our cities blues father! In August 2017, Big Jim fell ill with pneumonia and nearly lost his life. In an effort to save his life and help him recover and heal. The skilled and professional team at Carolina East Medical Center placed Kohler in a coma, so that he could combat his addiction to alcohol. For anyone that remembers Big Jim near the end of that long relationship he openly had with beer and whiskey, it was not always pretty.

Let’s All Support Him For the Joy He Brings

Many things have changed since then, and throughout it all Big Jim has been sober and is now in better health than he has ever been in all the years he has called NC home. In fact, it was just Wednesday night that I overheard his bride talk about him being here for all of the many positive changes he has made. I will point out that behind it all, it is his family and music that keep this man going.

Having said that, I will also mention that music is how he makes his living. If he had a better product, it would not take long to send him back out on the road where he is destined to be. He cannot do that without your help. In February Big Jim fired up a Kickstarter campaign to get this new product recorded and manufactured. On Tuesday, this campaign will be shut down unless we come up with the still needed $1980 to press the play button on a new Big Jim disc!

For the last time, please reconsider and donate to the cause of keeping the blues alive. BIG JIM STYLE!

Visit the link below and donate! EVERY DOLLAR COUNTS!

Thank You!

Come Back Tomorrow

I know I said I wanted to throw in the towel, but that is because I am so uncertain about how I will afford this build. After revealing my struggles I was met with an overwhelming about of support. Mostly emotional and some financial help as well! All of those that have helped me keep it together, THANK YOU! It has not been always easy, following the beats of my heart, but you all have made it worth the trip! In an effort to show you my commitment, I am going to offer three blogs each week as we continue to grow and expand this live music support circuit! When you return tomorrow, I will take share scenes from the weekend and give you the goods on where to find gigs in the week ahead!

The girl behind the banner has big dreams and major ambitions of healing the world with music. If you wish to help along on this journey of connecting people to music please consider one of the following options! There are so many ways for people to be a part of this build.

Affordable Partnerships For All

Corporate Unions

I am an advertising vehicle in need of a vehicle to take the dream farther. Let’s work together. If your corporate dollars help to build these well-contemplated plans, that will support the dreams of many local music makers, let’s talk about community commitment. I am very invested in this build and can’t imagine what life looks like without working on this business plan, which is going to need a lot of money to make it fire on all cylinders. Corporate Sponsorship packages start at $5,000.

Community Co-Hosts

Are you the leader in your niche? Consider partnering with me by being a stage sponsor! Proudly display your banner across the stages we set up to let locals know that you are supporting local, live music. Sponsorship dollars help to build fair pay stages for acts to offer their music. In exchange, you will be recognized as the co-host of keeping these music dreams alive! Stage sponsorships start at $1,000.

Post Hosts Are Welcome Here

If you are a small business and want to back the mission, consider being a POST HOST! As a post host, you will be featured in an article that will highlight your love of music. A post host will also be given one month of advertising in the sidebar of the blog, seen on all pages. The price to be a Post Host is $250 for one Post or $400 to be The Weekend Warrior POST HOST are just two options to consider.

Advertisers and Donors Appreciated

Are you a band or a small business with an ability to contribute $50.00 each month, consider advertising here! Donations from readers and live music supporters have always been appreciated also. www.paypal.com/ncmz

The Vision

Since I took you all the way back in life last week when I was taking myself out of the blog game, let me just say, I am in it to win it! As self-driven firecracker that has big ambitions and even bigger dreams, I am an emotional wonder in the peak of menopause and awaiting a life without so many hormones.  Though I am unsure how to make everything come together, I just know my idea is still fabulous. And once the government shuts down Facebook, music lovers will survive as they’ll be able to turn to the music zone in their area to know the live music news in their state.

Seeking Clarity

As a means of telling you how vested I am, I went to Craven Community College to sit down with their small business center director Deborah Kania to assess my ideas with another business professional.  After explaining the end result,  she looked at me and said, “So, you’re not a small thinker, are you?” and we laughed.  She also followed up with a deep breath and a “WOW!”

I knew it was going to be a big build. The sample product was nowhere near completion. In fact, I was only 2.5 years into a 4-5 year development phase, on my end. Last September, I was on the verge of taking the leap to invest one business into the other and start monetizing this product when the banks of our river rearranged that plan. I try to stay positive and the best way for me to do that is by not dealing with my life until it becomes a crisis. Last week we hit crisis mode because I am having a very hard time making ends meet. I went from having several thousand dollars a month to invest in this build and now I don’t even have several thousand dollars at all.

Over The Years

I have met with several people over the years and discussed my idea in a shadowed light, as I don’t care to reveal the whole thing until it’s an app ready for the world to download on their phones. If I pull it off, I will build a platform that employs thousands of freelancers like myself who are out here supporting a thriving music scene. I am convinced this is the best way to build a stronger circuit so that local bands have the ability to break out regionally and beyond.

With this good work that I am doing, I am building an opportunity for hungry entrepreneurs, whether they be music journalists, bands, bars or club owners, local music studios, sound engineers, brewing companies and more to be exposed in a partnership that is profitable to all!

The Reality and Frustrations

It was during my meeting with Deborah that I recognized my many frustrations. Not surprising to me, my greatest issue is with people! I am so frustrated by the lack of business sense that floods our local music scene. After some thought, I decided instead of quitting on people, let’s educate them. I believe the best way to deal with this will be through educating people here in the blog.  There are plenty of topics to highlight as well.

Behind the Scene With Tracey Stones

51287894_2488375904509963_3903169895243710464_o

There is always something in the works behind the scenes in my world. Lately, Tracey Stones Productions has been meeting with people about bringing music to their communities. In fact, today is the start of the 2019 concert series for the residents of Fairfield Harbour. We have 15 shows on the books. Some of these events are going to take place in the Community Center on Saturday evenings. Others will take place on Sunday afternoons at Red Sail Park. Tonight we welcome Rubich & Cain in the Community Center for a night of fun music. Next month marks the Sundays in the Park with Big Jim Kohler Band on Sunday, May 26, 2019, at 2 pm

I am still seeking community sponsors for these shows. If you want the residents in Fairfield Harbour to know you are supporting live music then we should talk about putting your banner up on the stages we set. Currently, there is no firm commitment to paying these bands. We are relying on the kindness of others and now in a community that was devastated last year! If you know anything about me, you know I am all about paying the bands for their time. A community sponsorship would allow a fair pay scale and help cover promotional costs. The return is the advertising you get here in the blog and on site where the concerts take place.

My Mission With Big Jim

54407630_1014752018735979_903738561633714176_o

Friends Forever

Big Jim and I have been on a journey since we met in March of 2013. For a minute there I thought our journey was about to end when my dear blues buddy fell ill in August of 2017. It was a crazy ride for some time while he did battle with pneumonia. In an effort to help him through we that, the amazing medical team at CarolinaEast had to put the bluesman in a coma to help him combat his addiction with alcohol. Big Jim makes no secret about his love affair with beer and whiskey for 30 years. A love affair that ended after the disease nearly claimed his life in 2017.

When pneumonia nearly took him from us, I prayed for God to keep him here. I sat by his side, playing music in his ear and promising him that if he fought for his life, I would stay the course and build a stronger healthier music community in his honor.  My daily work with music has been happening in his honor since his 50th Birthday, September 1, 2017.

The Crawl and The Comeback

After a long road of addiction recovery, knee replacement surgery, and battling the blood sugar bounce,  Kohler emerged back on our local scene on April 11, 2018. He performed his first gig in front of the Black Cat Shoppe on Middle St for ArtWalk.  It was the greatest joy my heart had known in more than 8 months. Big Jim was playing the blues in New Bern again!

Part of the hope in his return is advancing beyond the New Bern scene. He is a seasoned pro with many years logged with a few awesome national blues acts. There are times and seasons in everyone’s life where there is a need for reflection. Big Jim has now moved beyond those moments and has emerged, sober and stronger than ever before. I thought that would be enough for our community to rally behind him in support of getting him back in the studio.

PLEASE! Help Us Pave The Road Ahead

Having said that, Kohler created a Kickstarter campaign at the end of February which will be shut down in 10 days without the promise of a product because we did not meet the goal. I cannot tell you how frustrating this is for me, so I can’t even imagine how disappointed Jim must feel.  I know I was stoked about it and thought his goal of $4,000 was a reasonable one to meet.  It breaks my heart that we did not rise in the first week to meet him in this need. After two months we are still short! Given how much he has done so much for this community with his music, I thought for sure, we would return the favor to our own father of the blues.

Thus far 19 backers have pledged $1711.00 to his $4000.00 goal. That means we have 10 days to raise just under $2300.00 and the bluesman’s spirits. If we meet him in his need he will return the pledged with a great new blues project. We are all ready for that! This will also give us both a product to push him back on the national blues circuit. We are both ready for the ride, we just need the help of the community to gas up the engines! Please take a minute and pledge your support for more Big Jim Kohler music by visiting this link:

Back On The Scene With Tracey Stones

It’s like I never left!

Reunions are the theme of the week and every time I hear about North Carolina Bands reuniting, I usually hear about memories of long ago when bands played at two very popular rooms. The Attic was in Greenville, NC and was the work of Joe Toronto and his team and The Redneck Saloon in Grifton, NC.  In fact, the two girls that would tell these tales most often oare my friends pictured above, Madonna Hawks and Belinda Barr.

Shad Festival Rocks Music Fans

As we walk into festival season, we stop in Grifton for the 2019 Shad Festival where The Wannabees delivered the Classic rock and Jesse Bolt returned to stage to rock crowd for the first time in years.

The Wannabees Warm the Stage With Classic Rock

Generally, when I attend a show where the New Bern based band, The Wannabees are sharing the bill, I make it just in time to see the exit the stage. Luckily, this was not the case on Saturday night as I got to enjoy the last handful of songs they offered the gathering rock crowd. The quartet of classic rockers always delivers a polished set of popular rock tunes that fans enjoy! They sounded great on Saturday night dishing out the Tom Petty and rocking to the beats of the Beatles!

The buzz on the street though was the news that Jesse Bolt would be returning to rock the stage at the 2019 Shad Festival. Since I was not covering the NC scene in the ’70s I had to admit, quite often lately, that I never heard of the band. But I took plenty of time to talk to my local friends about the act as we awaited their return to the bright lights of the small town that once housed these rockers regularly in a bar known as The Redneck Saloon.

The  Return of Jesse Bolt

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Regardless of who I asked, the answer was the same, “These boys rocked the NC scene back in the day!” Jesse Bolt emerged onto the scene in 1974 and gained popularity quick.  They received enough recognition to find themselves on the touring circuit, opening for bands like U2, Kiss and Black Sabbath.

In fact, while chatting with founding member Keith Stacy last night I learned, that the band is  “currently bringing more of our original songs back…we (my brother Don and I) have a vast catalog of songs,” Stacy said. “I think Kiss was actually influenced by one of them.” He explains, “We played with Kiss at the Charlotte Coliseum in 1976. The next day at breakfast at the hotel, Gene asked our drummer, Max, ‘what was the name of the 3rd song you played?’ Evidently, they liked the dead stop in the song. They then came out with Stole Your Love…which also has a dead stop.”

As it was; this band was put together for the Festival in the hopes of bringing the band back to the scene. Stacy admitted that the guys I saw did not have much time logged together and the next time the band would be tighter. Frankly, I thought they were a fun rocking act with a lot of guitar waves to work out. Jan Fields accepted the role as frontman and rehearsed just one time with the band and their new bass player, Jim Hunter, may have had two rehearsals under his belt!

For those that are looking for the band so to reminisce the days gone by or find out the news on the road ahead be sure to find them on Facebook by clicking here

Reunions Are Always Fun for New Bern’s Delta Bones Band

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

While we are on the subject of reunions of sorts, let’s keep that groove going as we revisit the blues of The Delta Bones. This was a popular band that played here in New Bern on the regular, some 20 years ago. Today the guys gather for an occasional show and such was the case this Thursday, when they returned to the Piano Bar at Captain Ratty’s Seafood and Steakhouse to perform for the supper crowd.

Guitarist and original player, Ed Ruiz, is the one who reached out and asked me to come out for a night of fun and good music. I was obliged by the invitation and accepted. He had told me about the band in the past. But, since writing the blog, this was the first time they regrouped in the area for me to catch a sample. It was a great night of fun music made by longtime friends and music making brothers.

Generally, the line up includes Mike McCully on guitar and lead vocals, Tom Small on harmonica and vocals, Ed Ruiz on the guitar a, Tom Dunn on bass and Zach Meadows on drums. With Meadows out of town on Thursday, they called in Glen Druhot to fill in the backbeat, which he did with ease and grace.

Thank You For The Love and Attention You Have Passed My Way

Community Celebrations and Rock Legends Return to the Stage For Saturday Fun

On the Scene With Tracey Stones

IMG_5215

It was Community Fun for all and Rock Legends that offered the good times on a great day and rocking night!

Community Comes First

Last weekend many town-folks gathered at Creekside Park in James City, for a Saturday afternoon to celebrate the resiliency of New Bern and Craven County! The event was organized by Ina Thomas. She was motivated and inspired like many of us were by the amazing outcome of the Casey Hathaway story where the 3-year-old Craven County boy went missing and was found alive in the woods three days later.

The news story of Hathaway and his family and our local Sheriff’s Department gained national attention, as did our city of New Bern after it was truly devastated by Florence in September. Life does not always offer us rays of hope. Sometimes the clouds of dark blanket news coverage, in case you missed the headlines!

When Hathaway was found alive, after three days of being a lost little boy during a cold snap this winter, it was a miracle that filled all of our broken Florence hearts with love and made us forget our troubles as we breathed in faith and exhaled hope!! God is so amazing! He is here in our City of Bears and He walks with each one of us that are lost and in need. He is a busy miracle worker and He delivered to the masses on that one! Well done! In the name of Jesus, Amen!

Thomas wanted to honor Sheriff Chip Hughes and his team of officers, and the many volunteers that turned out and came together for our local area in recent times. Not only for those that helped find Hathaway for his family, but also those that came to our area to assist in our recovery after Florence truly devastated our corner of the world! A mission that still continues with new immediate needs as time wears on!

NCMZ.LIVE and New Bern Now Made the Scene

IMG_5028

I arrived in time to catch the last song offered by Alisa Mike. The beautiful singer offered “Proud Mary” for her final composition. And although it might look like I was on the scene for her show, the truth is I made it just in time to watch her break it down.

IMG_5032[1]

If you have never caught the amazing Alisa, I will remind you that she offers a free show to those that gather at the City Stage any Thursday evening from 7-9 pm. The professional singer offers voice lessons to anyone interested in vocal coaching. She is also available for private parties and venue engagements as well.

Following my time at the community celebration, I accepted Mike’s offer to join her for dinner. We headed to town and enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Morgan’s. It is always wonderful to catch up with the people that have supported my efforts. Mike is one of those people. She is one of the artists I envision with a powerful band behind her. I told her before we finished dinner that I could see her pulling off a fine set with John Van Dyke and his jazz project! On that thought, I always smile!

Real Heroes Reign True

The other thing that always makes me smile with pride is our Marines. When the organizer reached out to me, I offered some support in suggesting a few ideas for the music portion of the program. I know, surprise surprise!  I gave Thomas my word that I would promote her efforts and turn out for her event. When she presented the final music schedule, it was my hope to actually make the scene in time for our Marines. The line up for the day included the talents of stringer Marron Chaplin, singer Alisa Evans Mike, 2nd Division Marine Brass Band, local crooner Bryan Mayer, Simon Spalding, music historian and New Bern’s Blues Ambassador The Big Jim Kohler Blues Band. My timing was spot on.

 Reflections of the Organizer

Following the event, I caught up with the organizer to get her feelings on the event and the day. Thomas was very glad she put in the effort to do this for our community. She loves this little corner of the world like many of us and truly wanted to offer us all a day of fun, honor, and recognition for all we are when we come together! With the help of her small group of volunteers, she and her team did an awesome job in getting it done. Along with honoring our first responders and stellar volunteers, it is Thomas’ hope to sell enough T-shirt to raise the money needed to have a New Bern Bear placed at our local Sheriff’s office. To buy the We Believe in Bears T Shirt you can find Thomas on Facebook here Ina Lane Thomas,

Saturday Night Fun for Rock Fans as Pegasus Plus Performs at State Theatre

It’s All About That Bass

When you think of David Stover reflect on this, we nearly lost the rocker twice leading up the rebirth of this band Pegasus +, which has been in hiatus for more than three and a half decades and now rocking socks off. After first meeting the band under the spotlight of my work, I learned from Stover himself that he motivated the reunion because of life and his journey on it!

“To begin in the late ’70s and early ’80s we were playing all of the popular clubs from N.C. to Florida as much 300 days out of the year. We played over 50 percent of our own music. We were trying to make it and get a recording deal. But after years touring it wore us down, so we decided to break, as much as we loved playing together.

“As for most of us, we settled down and raised a family. But music has always been a constant thing in our lives. I personally have 2 daughters, a son and three grandchildren.” Sadly, thought the talented music maker also has had his fair share of hardships. “I lost my wife in a car accident in 2005” and he said, “I was diagnosed with cancer in 2006.” He considers himself very blessed! Stover said, “I am truly blessed.  I have come close to dying twice. That brings us to now. We all have seen so many of our friends and family pass away. So we all connected and decided to get back together for a reunion and do a show.  We are so lucky to have a chance to do this again and here we are, all still alive. This is just a little of what is going on.”

Our Introduction

That conversation came from our correspondence after the band’s second reunion show. They were a part of a triple bill in Raleigh at the Lincoln Theater in February, where they warmed up the stage for the band who put Raleigh music on the map, Nantucket.  After that show, it wasn’t long before they booked a third show. They all reached out to tell me about the booking and they all invited me and paid for my ticket to Saturday nights show at The State Theatre in Greenville, NC.

For that appearance, they offered two fine sets of music and offered more than a handful of originals in each set. They are a group of seasoned professionals who probably ought to keep writing original music now that they are back at it. Though it is fun to reminisce, it is also fun to roll forward into the unknown. Especially when you are an artist. I hold out hope that they will contemplate new stuff for the many new fans they are making. Like with everything else, time will tell.

Become a Fan Today

For fans and friends looking for this band, you can find them on Facebook here: Pegasus Plus For readers who do not have Facebook, you can check out their website here: pegasusplusband.com.

It was during the break, that I got to meet and speak with guitar player JK Loftin. He took the time to introduce himself and validate that they were really doing this because they nearly lost their bass man and brother, and loved each other enough to see what they could see. I am always appreciative to hear the players stories. This band has a long story and they are writing new chapters for us to appreciate. They are lucky and they know it, because they are doing the things they love doing, but doing it together again!

Thank You!!!

Personally, I think this band is an awesome fit for bigger stages and festival opportunities. For those interested in exploring gig options reach out to them today! Their contact info is on both the website and on Facebook.  A big shout out to guitarist Martin Bissell for purchasing our tickets to cover the show and big hugs for JK Loftin for being one of the newest blog supporters, as well as drummer Jason Patterson, who was actually the last supporter to be added to the thank you list.

Behind the Scenes with Tracey Stones

Real and True

Here is one thing I want everyone to know about me… I am real. I am not a fan of sugar coating life, because it has been a long and fruitless journey for this girl. Having said that, it was revealed on Facebook this week that I am struggling to overcome the losses I suffered from Florence, and I finally admitted the happy blogger is living with a broken heart. I rarely get a full night’s sleep and I am exhausted from faking it! In short, I had a personal meltdown.

Tomorrow I have very little to report except for who is playing where. So I am going to use tomorrow’s blog to express the full vision and mission of my heart and soul. I hope you come back then and help me find my way through the dark corners of my reality and truth. I established in November when I added the tip jar, that I could not do this alone anymore and I had no interest in quitting either. If you know me, you know even beyond my harsh truths I tend to lean on the positive side of life, but this week I dwelled in a lot of negative thoughts.

 We All Need Help!

Simply because without help this site will shut down soon, and as soon as next week. Tomorrow I will express my wants and needs in detail and will leave it all to God to figure out from there. Until then there is a lot going on so here are the places I picked that are supporting live music tonight!

And Just Like That, It was The Weekend Again But There is Always Some Fun To Be Had With Music

On The Scene With Tracey Stones

And just like that… it was the weekend again! Looking forward to sharing some good times with you all, as we bounce to the beats.

We Spent Some Time with Justin In the Garden on Thursday

On Thursday evening I headed to the coast with Mary Shine and our first stop was Carolina Home & Garden, located on Highway 24 in Newport. This place is fun for the whole family and offers something for everyone to enjoy! From the fountain and fish to the petting zoo, good food and cold beer…it is a great place to stop by for a few minutes to shop and browse, or come for an evening of entertainment any Thursday or Friday night n the Garden. Music plays from 6:30-9:30 pm and there is a $5.00 music charge. They always have a food truck on site and offer appetizers too for noshing.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

My favorite feature of all the Garden parties that I attend is the music of course. Justin Castellano is always a sweet treat to enjoy. He has such a unique style, that is sick with skill and talent. Castellano makes his guitar sing like few entertainers in our area do. He is a classically trained player with unbelievable chops. To check out his music and his schedule, please visit his website at www.justincguitar.com
