Singing and Dancing at Jams Throughout the Week

This Music Business… Class Is In

I have been in business for myself for as long as I have called Carolina my home! I am dedicated to the cause of connecting people to live music so to support the scene!

Band Business Development

Once you decide that you are going to approach your band like a business, the next step is to figure out what your needs are so that you know how much you need to earn to meet those needs. Many performers forget a few key expenses in this equation. The biggest might be forgetting to charge a reasonable hourly rate for their time.

The time equation is very important since there is more to this than most people see. When accounting for your time, you have to charge something for your road time, office time, as well as the performance. The other thing you need to add into to the mix of the expenses, beyond the cost of your equipment, is the cost of maintaining that equipment as well. Plus don’t forget the essentials that also add up like strings, picks, batteries, tune-ups and more.

All Aboard this Crazy Train!

Now then, once you account for what you need and what you need to charge to meet your needs, you then have to establish how many other people will this project support. Remember, everyone who is on board is in the same boat and their needs are just as important to the equation. So take the time to add up how much time is vested in the project per player and find out what the total needs are. Do not let that bottom line scare you. It is important to see that nuts and bolts of the operation on paper. It is the first step in setting your financial goals.

Always Set Goals and Assign Roles

As mentioned in yesterday’s blog, this endeavor is always a team effort. Even if you are a solo act, you need a team to carry you to the next level. Many serious players often fall back on the solo gig because running the business parts of the operation become easier to manage when flying solo. Many bands mates tend to forget or get sidetracked after the plans of going full time are initiated. It is important to keep on task and meet often, so that all the team members are on the same page. Communication is key to the success of this operation.

How? Who? How Much? To Who?

Here are some important discussions to have. Will the band be self-managed? Will they do in house promotions only? Who will pick up the cost of promotional items, such as an EPK for the band? These are all important conversations that serve bands better when discussed upfront. Don’t be afraid to discuss the money portion of this job, if that is what you intend for your project to be. And everyone must be accountable for their positions. The more you meet and plan for your success, the more likely you will reach your goals. These meetings can be held during rehearsal. If the band does not rehearse, it might be wise to secure day jobs as well for the brightest outcome! CLASS DISMISSED!

Monday Brought the Blues

It was another fun start to the week with Big Jim Kohler Blues Band working out their blues at The Brown Pelican. We started this weekly tradition at the start of February and the fun and excitement continue each Monday, with new slingers showing up to impress the blues master. Music starts at 7 pm with a band set, then it closes out with an hour-long jam of guest players. If you have not been, be sure to join us this week.

Tuesday Offered A Mix Bag At Open Mic in Beaufort

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

It is always a great time when I attend the Cru Bar & Wine Store/Beaufort Coffee Shop’s open mic, which is hosted by the lovely and talented Tiffany Elaine. The singer-songwriter does so much to support live and local music along the Crystal Coast where she roams.

For many months she has been hosting open mic on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. But last week the entertainer added a couple of new open mics added to the regular itinerary, and will now be offering open mic at Cru on the opposing weeks. Which mean she will be there again this Tuesday, promoting the many that come out to support her.

I always get to meet new players at this open mic at the Crystal Coast. Located in Beaufort, NC we meet tourists and newly relocated souls seeking out like-minded, music sharing folks to share time and songs with. Last week was no exception, as we met a few travelers and many locals jammers too. The open mic starts at 8 pm and all are welcome to perform. Each act is allowed three songs or 15 minutes under the bright lights.

Talent Unleashed

This week I had the pleasure of listening to Steve Mehan open the night with his original works. Mehan is a part of Elaine’s band Now or Never and just one of the talents songwriters that is a part of that union. Next up was Jimbo followed by Fernando Rivera, who shared some pieces of his soul. Empty Baggies offered a drug-infused set while Now or Never uplifted the spirits of listeners. Ashton Ward graced our stage and John Durham also got a shot at sharing the stage. Closing out the night was the fun band Smoke n Oakem! A couple of players from that band offered a shot of solo works, as well they included sax man Dakota Newman and bass man Hank who shreds notes on a six-string also.

Tiffany’s Corner

Tiffany Elaine has added two new open mic nights to her monthly calendar. First up she announced “Guys! We have a new place to jam on the Tuesdays we aren’t at Cru! Come check out the K Club at Brandywine Bay in Morehead City, NC.  It’s absolutely gorgeous, they have great food and great drink prices. See you on May 7!” Also new in the mix is Open Mic Wednesdays At The Carolina Wine Mixer ! and that gets underway on May 8, 2019!

img_6062

When she is not hosting open mic nights she is booking and promoting her band Now or Never. Today the band has two gigs, including a show at Humphrey Farm at press time today and tonight it is Now Or Never & Tiffany Elaine @ Pour Haus Pub For Dogwood Fest Music starts at 10 pm. To keep up with her band visit their Facebook Page Now Or Never.

Wednesday Welcomed A Birthday Blues Jam

On Wednesday it was Big Jim and a Birthday celebration at The City Stage for our friend April Sunshine. The night included some great blues, good grooves, close friends and CUPCAKES! Homemade chocolate treats came courtesy of the camera-shy photographer that snapped the above picture of the birthday girl Deborah Shillito. This is another weekly offering that not only shares the traditions of that good blues music, but welcomes players to the stage to jam as well. Music plays from 7-9 pm each Wednesday at the City Stage, 901 B Pollock St., New Bern.

Thursday Kept Us Bouncing About Town

Mad Fiddling For Supper

The Mad Fiddler, Jason Addams was back in town and sharing songs with those that gathered in the Piano Bar upstairs at Captain Ratty’s Seafood and Steakhouse. They started offering live music each Thursday in February and it is a nice addition to the weekly music calendar. If you have been missing the music and you missed the Mad Fiddler, the good news is that there is live music offered each week and the talent of Addams is on display once a month for all to enjoy.  For those that can’t wait until next month, look for him this Thursday jamming tunes from 6-9 pm at Salty Turtle Beer Company

2019 Spring Fair Kicks Off with the Blues

Big Jim Kohler Band welcomed all those that come out to the opening night at the Craven Jaycees 2019 Spring Fair, at the Craven County Fairgrounds on Thursday evening. Gates opened at 6 pm and the music started at 7 pm. The fair is in town until next Sunday, May 5, 2019.

Last night they were going to host the popular local act Joe Brown and The Band, but that show was canceled due to inclement weather. Given that announcement, the band has been rescheduled for next Friday, May 3, 2019. Tickets are $5 at the gate and you can buy bands to ride the rides all day for just $20.00.

Back on My Big Jim Soapbox

We All Love Him!

Have you met my blues brother, Big Jim? This guy is the real deal when it comes to Chicago style blues and he has a long list of songs ready to share with his fans and friends. It has been quite a ride sitting shotgun on this blues journey with this talented slinger, who not only plays the blues but lives them out like a true champion. Jim Kohler moved to ENC in 2011 and just six weeks after settling in with his family they were greeted by the rise of Irene, a Hurrican that washed through their house and washed away most of their possessions. It took them five years to recover and along the way they worked out their sorrows by sharing music with their community. They are the first band to show up at any cause and they are often there donating their time.

We Nearly Lost Him

Before Florence was ever a consideration in our community’s story, there was another story that was penned about our cities blues father! In August 2017, Big Jim fell ill with pneumonia and nearly lost his life. In an effort to save his life and help him recover and heal. The skilled and professional team at Carolina East Medical Center placed Kohler in a coma, so that he could combat his addiction to alcohol. For anyone that remembers Big Jim near the end of that long relationship he openly had with beer and whiskey, it was not always pretty.

Let’s All Support Him For the Joy He Brings

Many things have changed since then, and throughout it all Big Jim has been sober and is now in better health than he has ever been in all the years he has called NC home. In fact, it was just Wednesday night that I overheard his bride talk about him being here for all of the many positive changes he has made. I will point out that behind it all, it is his family and music that keep this man going.

Having said that, I will also mention that music is how he makes his living. If he had a better product, it would not take long to send him back out on the road where he is destined to be. He cannot do that without your help. In February Big Jim fired up a Kickstarter campaign to get this new product recorded and manufactured. On Tuesday, this campaign will be shut down unless we come up with the still needed $1980 to press the play button on a new Big Jim disc!

For the last time, please reconsider and donate to the cause of keeping the blues alive. BIG JIM STYLE!

Come Back Tomorrow

I know I said I wanted to throw in the towel, but that is because I am so uncertain about how I will afford this build. After revealing my struggles I was met with an overwhelming about of support. Mostly emotional and some financial help as well! All of those that have helped me keep it together, THANK YOU! It has not been always easy, following the beats of my heart, but you all have made it worth the trip! In an effort to show you my commitment, I am going to offer three blogs each week as we continue to grow and expand this live music support circuit! When you return tomorrow, I will take share scenes from the weekend and give you the goods on where to find gigs in the week ahead!

The girl behind the banner has big dreams and major ambitions of healing the world with music. If you wish to help along on this journey of connecting people to music please consider one of the following options! There are so many ways for people to be a part of this build.

Affordable Partnerships For All

Corporate Unions

I am an advertising vehicle in need of a vehicle to take the dream farther. Let’s work together. If your corporate dollars help to build these well-contemplated plans, that will support the dreams of many local music makers, let’s talk about community commitment. I am very invested in this build and can’t imagine what life looks like without working on this business plan, which is going to need a lot of money to make it fire on all cylinders. Corporate Sponsorship packages start at $5,000.

Community Co-Hosts

Are you the leader in your niche? Consider partnering with me by being a stage sponsor! Proudly display your banner across the stages we set up to let locals know that you are supporting local, live music. Sponsorship dollars help to build fair pay stages for acts to offer their music. In exchange, you will be recognized as the co-host of keeping these music dreams alive! Stage sponsorships start at $1,000.

Post Hosts Are Welcome Here

If you are a small business and want to back the mission, consider being a POST HOST! As a post host, you will be featured in an article that will highlight your love of music. A post host will also be given one month of advertising in the sidebar of the blog, seen on all pages. The price to be a Post Host is $250 for one Post or $400 to be The Weekend Warrior POST HOST are just two options to consider.

Advertisers and Donors Appreciated

Are you a band or a small business with an ability to contribute $50.00 each month, consider advertising here! Donations from readers and live music supporters have always been appreciated also. www.paypal.com/ncmz

The Vision

Since I took you all the way back in life last week when I was taking myself out of the blog game, let me just say, I am in it to win it! As self-driven firecracker that has big ambitions and even bigger dreams, I am an emotional wonder in the peak of menopause and awaiting a life without so many hormones.  Though I am unsure how to make everything come together, I just know my idea is still fabulous. And once the government shuts down Facebook, music lovers will survive as they’ll be able to turn to the music zone in their area to know the live music news in their state.

Seeking Clarity

As a means of telling you how vested I am, I went to Craven Community College to sit down with their small business center director Deborah Kania to assess my ideas with another business professional.  After explaining the end result,  she looked at me and said, “So, you’re not a small thinker, are you?” and we laughed.  She also followed up with a deep breath and a “WOW!”

I knew it was going to be a big build. The sample product was nowhere near completion. In fact, I was only 2.5 years into a 4-5 year development phase, on my end. Last September, I was on the verge of taking the leap to invest one business into the other and start monetizing this product when the banks of our river rearranged that plan. I try to stay positive and the best way for me to do that is by not dealing with my life until it becomes a crisis. Last week we hit crisis mode because I am having a very hard time making ends meet. I went from having several thousand dollars a month to invest in this build and now I don’t even have several thousand dollars at all.

Over The Years

I have met with several people over the years and discussed my idea in a shadowed light, as I don’t care to reveal the whole thing until it’s an app ready for the world to download on their phones. If I pull it off, I will build a platform that employs thousands of freelancers like myself who are out here supporting a thriving music scene. I am convinced this is the best way to build a stronger circuit so that local bands have the ability to break out regionally and beyond.

With this good work that I am doing, I am building an opportunity for hungry entrepreneurs, whether they be music journalists, bands, bars or club owners, local music studios, sound engineers, brewing companies and more to be exposed in a partnership that is profitable to all!

The Reality and Frustrations

It was during my meeting with Deborah that I recognized my many frustrations. Not surprising to me, my greatest issue is with people! I am so frustrated by the lack of business sense that floods our local music scene. After some thought, I decided instead of quitting on people, let’s educate them. I believe the best way to deal with this will be through educating people here in the blog.  There are plenty of topics to highlight as well.

Behind the Scene With Tracey Stones

51287894_2488375904509963_3903169895243710464_o

There is always something in the works behind the scenes in my world. Lately, Tracey Stones Productions has been meeting with people about bringing music to their communities. In fact, today is the start of the 2019 concert series for the residents of Fairfield Harbour. We have 15 shows on the books. Some of these events are going to take place in the Community Center on Saturday evenings. Others will take place on Sunday afternoons at Red Sail Park. Tonight we welcome Rubich & Cain in the Community Center for a night of fun music. Next month marks the Sundays in the Park with Big Jim Kohler Band on Sunday, May 26, 2019, at 2 pm

I am still seeking community sponsors for these shows. If you want the residents in Fairfield Harbour to know you are supporting live music then we should talk about putting your banner up on the stages we set. Currently, there is no firm commitment to paying these bands. We are relying on the kindness of others and now in a community that was devastated last year! If you know anything about me, you know I am all about paying the bands for their time. A community sponsorship would allow a fair pay scale and help cover promotional costs. The return is the advertising you get here in the blog and on site where the concerts take place.

My Mission With Big Jim

54407630_1014752018735979_903738561633714176_o

Friends Forever

Big Jim and I have been on a journey since we met in March of 2013. For a minute there I thought our journey was about to end when my dear blues buddy fell ill in August of 2017. It was a crazy ride for some time while he did battle with pneumonia. In an effort to help him through we that, the amazing medical team at CarolinaEast had to put the bluesman in a coma to help him combat his addiction with alcohol. Big Jim makes no secret about his love affair with beer and whiskey for 30 years. A love affair that ended after the disease nearly claimed his life in 2017.

When pneumonia nearly took him from us, I prayed for God to keep him here. I sat by his side, playing music in his ear and promising him that if he fought for his life, I would stay the course and build a stronger healthier music community in his honor.  My daily work with music has been happening in his honor since his 50th Birthday, September 1, 2017.

The Crawl and The Comeback

After a long road of addiction recovery, knee replacement surgery, and battling the blood sugar bounce,  Kohler emerged back on our local scene on April 11, 2018. He performed his first gig in front of the Black Cat Shoppe on Middle St for ArtWalk.  It was the greatest joy my heart had known in more than 8 months. Big Jim was playing the blues in New Bern again!

Part of the hope in his return is advancing beyond the New Bern scene. He is a seasoned pro with many years logged with a few awesome national blues acts. There are times and seasons in everyone’s life where there is a need for reflection. Big Jim has now moved beyond those moments and has emerged, sober and stronger than ever before. I thought that would be enough for our community to rally behind him in support of getting him back in the studio.

PLEASE! Help Us Pave The Road Ahead

Having said that, Kohler created a Kickstarter campaign at the end of February which will be shut down in 10 days without the promise of a product because we did not meet the goal. I cannot tell you how frustrating this is for me, so I can’t even imagine how disappointed Jim must feel.  I know I was stoked about it and thought his goal of $4,000 was a reasonable one to meet.  It breaks my heart that we did not rise in the first week to meet him in this need. After two months we are still short! Given how much he has done so much for this community with his music, I thought for sure, we would return the favor to our own father of the blues.

Thus far 19 backers have pledged $1711.00 to his $4000.00 goal. That means we have 10 days to raise just under $2300.00 and the bluesman’s spirits. If we meet him in his need he will return the pledged with a great new blues project. We are all ready for that! This will also give us both a product to push him back on the national blues circuit. We are both ready for the ride, we just need the help of the community to gas up the engines! Please take a minute and pledge your support for more Big Jim Kohler music by visiting this link:

Back On The Scene With Tracey Stones

It’s like I never left!

IMG_7794 (2)

Reunions are the theme of the week and every time I hear about North Carolina Bands reuniting, I usually hear about memories of long ago when bands played at two very popular rooms. The Attic was in Greenville, NC and was the work of Joe Toronto and his team and The Redneck Saloon in Grifton, NC.  In fact, the two girls that would tell these tales most often oare my friends pictured above, Madonna Hawks and Belinda Barr.

Shad Festival Rocks Music Fans

As we walk into festival season, we stop in Grifton for the 2019 Shad Festival where The Wannabees delivered the Classic rock and Jesse Bolt returned to stage to rock crowd for the first time in years.

The Wannabees Warm the Stage With Classic Rock

Generally, when I attend a show where the New Bern based band, The Wannabees are sharing the bill, I make it just in time to see the exit the stage. Luckily, this was not the case on Saturday night as I got to enjoy the last handful of songs they offered the gathering rock crowd. The quartet of classic rockers always delivers a polished set of popular rock tunes that fans enjoy! They sounded great on Saturday night dishing out the Tom Petty and rocking to the beats of the Beatles!

The buzz on the street though was the news that Jesse Bolt would be returning to rock the stage at the 2019 Shad Festival. Since I was not covering the NC scene in the ’70s I had to admit, quite often lately, that I never heard of the band. But I took plenty of time to talk to my local friends about the act as we awaited their return to the bright lights of the small town that once housed these rockers regularly in a bar known as The Redneck Saloon.

The  Return of Jesse Bolt

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Regardless of who I asked, the answer was the same, “These boys rocked the NC scene back in the day!” Jesse Bolt emerged onto the scene in 1974 and gained popularity quick.  They received enough recognition to find themselves on the touring circuit, opening for bands like U2, Kiss and Black Sabbath.

In fact, while chatting with founding member Keith Stacy last night I learned, that the band is  “currently bringing more of our original songs back…we (my brother Don and I) have a vast catalog of songs,” Stacy said. “I think Kiss was actually influenced by one of them.” He explains, “We played with Kiss at the Charlotte Coliseum in 1976. The next day at breakfast at the hotel, Gene asked our drummer, Max, ‘what was the name of the 3rd song you played?’ Evidently, they liked the dead stop in the song. They then came out with Stole Your Love…which also has a dead stop.”

As it was; this band was put together for the Festival in the hopes of bringing the band back to the scene. Stacy admitted that the guys I saw did not have much time logged together and the next time the band would be tighter. Frankly, I thought they were a fun rocking act with a lot of guitar waves to work out. Jan Fields accepted the role as frontman and rehearsed just one time with the band and their new bass player, Jim Hunter, may have had two rehearsals under his belt!

For those that are looking for the band so to reminisce the days gone by or find out the news on the road ahead be sure to find them on Facebook by clicking here

Reunions Are Always Fun for New Bern’s Delta Bones Band

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

While we are on the subject of reunions of sorts, let’s keep that groove going as we revisit the blues of The Delta Bones. This was a popular band that played here in New Bern on the regular, some 20 years ago. Today the guys gather for an occasional show and such was the case this Thursday, when they returned to the Piano Bar at Captain Ratty’s Seafood and Steakhouse to perform for the supper crowd.

Guitarist and original player, Ed Ruiz, is the one who reached out and asked me to come out for a night of fun and good music. I was obliged by the invitation and accepted. He had told me about the band in the past. But, since writing the blog, this was the first time they regrouped in the area for me to catch a sample. It was a great night of fun music made by longtime friends and music making brothers.

Generally, the line up includes Mike McCully on guitar and lead vocals, Tom Small on harmonica and vocals, Ed Ruiz on the guitar a, Tom Dunn on bass and Zach Meadows on drums. With Meadows out of town on Thursday, they called in Glen Druhot to fill in the backbeat, which he did with ease and grace.

Community Celebrations and Rock Legends Return to the Stage For Saturday Fun

On the Scene With Tracey Stones

IMG_5215

It was Community Fun for all and Rock Legends that offered the good times on a great day and rocking night!

Community Comes First

Last weekend many town-folks gathered at Creekside Park in James City, for a Saturday afternoon to celebrate the resiliency of New Bern and Craven County! The event was organized by Ina Thomas. She was motivated and inspired like many of us were by the amazing outcome of the Casey Hathaway story where the 3-year-old Craven County boy went missing and was found alive in the woods three days later.

The news story of Hathaway and his family and our local Sheriff’s Department gained national attention, as did our city of New Bern after it was truly devastated by Florence in September. Life does not always offer us rays of hope. Sometimes the clouds of dark blanket news coverage, in case you missed the headlines!

When Hathaway was found alive, after three days of being a lost little boy during a cold snap this winter, it was a miracle that filled all of our broken Florence hearts with love and made us forget our troubles as we breathed in faith and exhaled hope!! God is so amazing! He is here in our City of Bears and He walks with each one of us that are lost and in need. He is a busy miracle worker and He delivered to the masses on that one! Well done! In the name of Jesus, Amen!

Thomas wanted to honor Sheriff Chip Hughes and his team of officers, and the many volunteers that turned out and came together for our local area in recent times. Not only for those that helped find Hathaway for his family, but also those that came to our area to assist in our recovery after Florence truly devastated our corner of the world! A mission that still continues with new immediate needs as time wears on!

NCMZ.LIVE and New Bern Now Made the Scene

IMG_5028

I arrived in time to catch the last song offered by Alisa Mike. The beautiful singer offered “Proud Mary” for her final composition. And although it might look like I was on the scene for her show, the truth is I made it just in time to watch her break it down.

IMG_5032[1]

If you have never caught the amazing Alisa, I will remind you that she offers a free show to those that gather at the City Stage any Thursday evening from 7-9 pm. The professional singer offers voice lessons to anyone interested in vocal coaching. She is also available for private parties and venue engagements as well.

Following my time at the community celebration, I accepted Mike’s offer to join her for dinner. We headed to town and enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Morgan’s. It is always wonderful to catch up with the people that have supported my efforts. Mike is one of those people. She is one of the artists I envision with a powerful band behind her. I told her before we finished dinner that I could see her pulling off a fine set with John Van Dyke and his jazz project! On that thought, I always smile!

Real Heroes Reign True

The other thing that always makes me smile with pride is our Marines. When the organizer reached out to me, I offered some support in suggesting a few ideas for the music portion of the program. I know, surprise surprise!  I gave Thomas my word that I would promote her efforts and turn out for her event. When she presented the final music schedule, it was my hope to actually make the scene in time for our Marines. The line up for the day included the talents of stringer Marron Chaplin, singer Alisa Evans Mike, 2nd Division Marine Brass Band, local crooner Bryan Mayer, Simon Spalding, music historian and New Bern’s Blues Ambassador The Big Jim Kohler Blues Band. My timing was spot on.

 Reflections of the Organizer

Following the event, I caught up with the organizer to get her feelings on the event and the day. Thomas was very glad she put in the effort to do this for our community. She loves this little corner of the world like many of us and truly wanted to offer us all a day of fun, honor, and recognition for all we are when we come together! With the help of her small group of volunteers, she and her team did an awesome job in getting it done. Along with honoring our first responders and stellar volunteers, it is Thomas’ hope to sell enough T-shirt to raise the money needed to have a New Bern Bear placed at our local Sheriff’s office. To buy the We Believe in Bears T Shirt you can find Thomas on Facebook here Ina Lane Thomas,

Saturday Night Fun for Rock Fans as Pegasus Plus Performs at State Theatre

It’s All About That Bass

When you think of David Stover reflect on this, we nearly lost the rocker twice leading up the rebirth of this band Pegasus +, which has been in hiatus for more than three and a half decades and now rocking socks off. After first meeting the band under the spotlight of my work, I learned from Stover himself that he motivated the reunion because of life and his journey on it!

“To begin in the late ’70s and early ’80s we were playing all of the popular clubs from N.C. to Florida as much 300 days out of the year. We played over 50 percent of our own music. We were trying to make it and get a recording deal. But after years touring it wore us down, so we decided to break, as much as we loved playing together.

“As for most of us, we settled down and raised a family. But music has always been a constant thing in our lives. I personally have 2 daughters, a son and three grandchildren.” Sadly, thought the talented music maker also has had his fair share of hardships. “I lost my wife in a car accident in 2005” and he said, “I was diagnosed with cancer in 2006.” He considers himself very blessed! Stover said, “I am truly blessed.  I have come close to dying twice. That brings us to now. We all have seen so many of our friends and family pass away. So we all connected and decided to get back together for a reunion and do a show.  We are so lucky to have a chance to do this again and here we are, all still alive. This is just a little of what is going on.”

Our Introduction

That conversation came from our correspondence after the band’s second reunion show. They were a part of a triple bill in Raleigh at the Lincoln Theater in February, where they warmed up the stage for the band who put Raleigh music on the map, Nantucket.  After that show, it wasn’t long before they booked a third show. They all reached out to tell me about the booking and they all invited me and paid for my ticket to Saturday nights show at The State Theatre in Greenville, NC.

For that appearance, they offered two fine sets of music and offered more than a handful of originals in each set. They are a group of seasoned professionals who probably ought to keep writing original music now that they are back at it. Though it is fun to reminisce, it is also fun to roll forward into the unknown. Especially when you are an artist. I hold out hope that they will contemplate new stuff for the many new fans they are making. Like with everything else, time will tell.

Become a Fan Today

For fans and friends looking for this band, you can find them on Facebook here: Pegasus Plus For readers who do not have Facebook, you can check out their website here: pegasusplusband.com.

It was during the break, that I got to meet and speak with guitar player JK Loftin. He took the time to introduce himself and validate that they were really doing this because they nearly lost their bass man and brother, and loved each other enough to see what they could see. I am always appreciative to hear the players stories. This band has a long story and they are writing new chapters for us to appreciate. They are lucky and they know it, because they are doing the things they love doing, but doing it together again!

Thank You!!!

Personally, I think this band is an awesome fit for bigger stages and festival opportunities. For those interested in exploring gig options reach out to them today! Their contact info is on both the website and on Facebook.  A big shout out to guitarist Martin Bissell for purchasing our tickets to cover the show and big hugs for JK Loftin for being one of the newest blog supporters, as well as drummer Jason Patterson, who was actually the last supporter to be added to the thank you list.

Behind the Scenes with Tracey Stones

Real and True

Here is one thing I want everyone to know about me… I am real. I am not a fan of sugar coating life, because it has been a long and fruitless journey for this girl. Having said that, it was revealed on Facebook this week that I am struggling to overcome the losses I suffered from Florence, and I finally admitted the happy blogger is living with a broken heart. I rarely get a full night’s sleep and I am exhausted from faking it! In short, I had a personal meltdown.

Tomorrow I have very little to report except for who is playing where. So I am going to use tomorrow’s blog to express the full vision and mission of my heart and soul. I hope you come back then and help me find my way through the dark corners of my reality and truth. I established in November when I added the tip jar, that I could not do this alone anymore and I had no interest in quitting either. If you know me, you know even beyond my harsh truths I tend to lean on the positive side of life, but this week I dwelled in a lot of negative thoughts.

 We All Need Help!

Simply because without help this site will shut down soon, and as soon as next week. Tomorrow I will express my wants and needs in detail and will leave it all to God to figure out from there. Until then there is a lot going on so here are the places I picked that are supporting live music tonight!

And Just Like That, It was The Weekend Again But There is Always Some Fun To Be Had With Music

On The Scene With Tracey Stones

And just like that… it was the weekend again! Looking forward to sharing some good times with you all, as we bounce to the beats.

We Spent Some Time with Justin In the Garden on Thursday

On Thursday evening I headed to the coast with Mary Shine and our first stop was Carolina Home & Garden, located on Highway 24 in Newport. This place is fun for the whole family and offers something for everyone to enjoy! From the fountain and fish to the petting zoo, good food and cold beer…it is a great place to stop by for a few minutes to shop and browse, or come for an evening of entertainment any Thursday or Friday night n the Garden. Music plays from 6:30-9:30 pm and there is a $5.00 music charge. They always have a food truck on site and offer appetizers too for noshing.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

My favorite feature of all the Garden parties that I attend is the music of course. Justin Castellano is always a sweet treat to enjoy. He has such a unique style, that is sick with skill and talent. Castellano makes his guitar sing like few entertainers in our area do. He is a classically trained player with unbelievable chops. To check out his music and his schedule, please visit his website at www.justincguitar.com

Back In the City of Bears for Some Friday Night Fun

Tommy Duzan Offers Songs in James City

Tommy Duzan Sr is a skilled lifer. Music has been a part of this man’s journey from the start and he has made it a part of his future as well. Playing songs and sharing music is his favorite thing to do and it shows when he performs. Last night he was entertaining fans and friends that gathered at the Garage. This unique bar offers a fun reprieve for parents who wish to have a beer but don’t want to stay home or ditch the kids to do it. There is always good beer on tap and fun games for the kids to enjoy. Stop out and enjoy live music on Fridays from 7-10 pm.

Duzan can be heard sharing his songs all around town and beyond. He has been booking more dates and playing more shows outside of the area. He enjoys showing up at local jams and sharing the stage with like-minded players. Next week the rocker will be playing a gig with his father Charlie Duzan, for The New Bern Historical Society’s Heritage Home Tours. This year the Historical Society decided to include music on the back porch of the Attmore-Oliver House. To get your tickets for this two day, fun-filled event visit https://newbernhistorical.org/

Gene Gregory Comes for a Visit

Singer songwriter, Gene Gregory calls Wilmington home these days, but feels most comfortable on any stage that welcomes him. Last night the crooner was offering songs and sharing stories with new friends and old fans at Brütopia. While I was in the house he offered an original song which I captured for my YouTube page. For anyone interested in hearing “Moving On” it is a Gene Gregory original and now found on my Channel.

For friends and fans looking for the talented stringer, be sure to like his music page on Facebook and visit his Website today at http://www.gugogene.com. Tonight the singer will be working the scene closer to home, when he shares songs at Shuckin’ Shack Oyster Bar – Leland NC. Live music starts at 7 pm.

Big Jim Bangs His Blues Downtown

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Rocking the blues at the Brown Pelican last night was New Bern’s own blues ambassador Big Jim Kohler. Helping to fill in the beats and round out the sound last night was The General Mike Sandvig on Bass, Tom Parker on the drums and Lee Tibbetts on the Harmonica. Just when you didn’t things could get any better, they bring the angelic sounds of Kathy Kohler to slay souls with her captivating voice.

The Switch Swing Into Blackbeard’s and Bring the Party

On my way through town last night I stopped by Blackbeard’s Triple Play on South Front St to see how things were going with Switch last night.  As expected they were turning that little corner of the world upon its ear, with their fun party offerings. The dance floor was packed and the people were loving the beats, brought by these brothers and music friends. The Switch is a long-running party band fronted by two brothers. They always include the audience in the show and offer them the music that keeps them coming back for more.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Taking their name from their ability to switch things up this talented band always have fun up their sleeves. If you have not seen their show yet, you are missing a fun and good time. They play all the songs that make people want to dance and encourage all to do so. To meet up with Larry, Artie, Dave, and Michael tonight, you can pack up the coolers and head out the country. The band will be rocking the Stage at Roadies Road House, located on Highway 55 East in Seven Springs. Music starts at 10 pm and there is a music charge which pays the band. Admission is $20, but you will be packing coolers and bringing own beverages. To keep up with the guys on the internet, you can find them on Facebook at The Switch on Facebook.

Adam Hill Band Brings it To Triple Play for James City

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The nightcap of the evening came when I headed back over the bridge to catch The Adam Hill Band. They were the chosen band to kick off the music season at Triple Play Restaurant. Raw and captivating, this band is simply something for the eyes and ears to take in. Hill has a speed few players master and his voice is a match to his guitar talent. He is a musician’s musician. I have heard other guitar players threaten to go home and burn their guitars after watching Hill. But you know, instead they just take it all in and probably try to pull it off later at home. This is pretty much how the self-taught player got going himself. He would go to shows and watch his stepfather at an impressionable age and when they got home, Hill went to work on mimicking what he saw.

To keep up with Adam Hill and all of his music projects be sure to check out his website at www.adamhillmusic.net.

rickoLus (FL)
https://rickolus.bandcamp.com/album/american-backyard
He started a one man band, played run down bars with low ceilings. Played outdoor concerts, went on tour and cleared the Bone Zone. He played empty fields, full cemeteries, and bleating petting zoos. Writing songs on the spot, he dismantled guitars and deconstructed drum kits. He wrote “Youngster”, an album from an old man about the youth he spent and wasted away on cigarettes and long drives.”Coyote and Mule” was a return to the green shed’s four track recording. His soon to be released “Troubadour” is a double-album ode to his wife and to his marriage.

rickoLus is not your usual singer/songwriter. His music comes from a place that is deep, thoughtful and honest. The only annoyance with his live performance is how easily he pulls it all off, without a worry in the world.

IMG_1789 (2).JPG

Big Jim at Sara’s Big Apple For the First Course

Sara’s Big Apple is offering live music a couple of Saturdays each month in the back room. She opened music season with the one who jump-started live music around town and brought things to a new level, Mr. Blues, Big Jim Kohler. He shared songs from 6-8 pm.

The stringer has been keeping busy since bouncing back to life again last year. He is playing three to four days each week and offers two blues jams in town as part of the lineup. In the event, you have missed the news he is at The Brown Pelican 411 Broad St., New Bern, NC each Monday sharing songs from 7-9 pm. On Wednesdays, he and the boys bring it to The City Stage.  Music also plays at 7-9 pm.

For those that need a teeny-weeny bit of The Big Jim Kohler Blues Band, be sure to head out to The Garage in James City this evening. He will be there with his bride and rocking the blues from 7-10 pm. Ad for music fans in the Fairfield Harbour area looking to support live music nights at Sara’s Big Apple, located on Broad Creek Road, come out on Saturday, April 13, 2019, to enjoy the sounds of Ashton Ward 6-8 pm

Greenville, NC for A Second Helping

After supper, I headed up Highway 17 and went by way of Highway 43 to check in with Second Helping who had a show last Saturday night at The State Theater in Greenville, NC. The Lenoir County-based band has some New Bern appeal too, with slinger Tom Spellman on guitar. The venue was cool too, with good sound and lights, friendly staff and plenty of drinks from behind the bar.

Second Helping is the longest running Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute touring today. With dates in Norway and Canada n the calendar this year, the band is going international. They don’t play often around our area but they do have some dates coming up. The line up includes the talents of Lead Singer, Jon Riggs; Drummer, Joey Gillette; Guitar, James Jones, Piano, Jackie Johnson; Guitarist, Tom Spellman; Guitarist, Chris McCallister; Bassist, Jerry Potter, Background Vocals, Fleeta Griffin, Tracey Brenneman, and Laura McCallister.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The next time the band appears in our area is on Saturday, April 13, 2019, at LaGrange Garden Spot with music playing 7-10 pm. If you like that special brand of Southern Rock made famous by Skynyrd, come see this band when they are in the area. You can keep up with their dates and the latest news by checking out their website at http://www.secondhelping.com.

Washington For Dessert

One of the best parts of writing this live music blog is finding new places that offer live music. If I made it my mission to find only new places, it would take me years to visit every place with live music. But I do seek out new bands and new venues as much as possible, as it is my hope to remind you that live music is everywhere and it needs your support tonight. My final stops on Saturday happened in Washington, NC where I met the AFreyed Knot Band and the whole family!

In fact, I met a few new friends and the Bright Family on Saturday night when I stopped by The Rebel Tavern! They are the bright stars of AFreyed Knot! Offering the popular tunes from the ’70s thru today, this band is a mixed bag of family talent and fun for friends and rock fans! Working the guitar is son Peter Bright, on bass is hubby and dad, Taylor Bright and on keys and fronting the band offering the lead on vocals is mom and wife, Lynette Bright. Sitting back behind the kit is James Stroud!

It was a wonderful night with a warm and friendly crowd. I met local live music supporter Susan Thomas who will be getting married this weekend. I want us to raise our glass to her and her beloved, Alfred Baugham, a music man himself. Cheers and best wishes!

For friends and fans of the band Afreyed Knot, the band will be a part of Pirate Fest in Greenville, NC next month! That good time happens on Saturday, April 13, 2019.

The Night Cap

My final stop for the evening, last Saturday evening was Market Street Pub located in the center of town. Offering songs was a new act here, Kevin Hartigan. A cool young kid who not only knows classic rock but rocks some original works as well, For those that want a sample of that here is an exclusive from that night.

The singer-songwriter hails from Dover Delaware. We actually have one friend in common, another stringer, Joey Fulkerson, my dear friend from long ago, a blues stringer who consumed a few chapters many moons ago.

When I spoke with Hartigan briefly on Saturday, he said he shares his music freely and you can find him on Spotify and iTunes. It was my hope that I would hear something from the artists during the week but have not received word. I have many questions, perhaps those will be answered after we connect on Facebook. I will share more when that happens.

Sweet Community Jams Greet My Sunday Night

I am lucky to live in a great tight-knit community of talented people. And not longs ago, at an open mic in town, I remember talking to Doug King about the idea of a jam at the community center. That was probably back in November.

Now there is a talented bunch of stringers and singers in my neighborhood that comes together one time each month to share songs and enjoy music making fun together. From the Downeast Dulcimers to Dan Jam Phillips, and even a Neuse River Rambler found in this bunch of players. They offered a great selection of songs in the round and played a variety of genres.

These music makers will gather again on the third Sunday in April to make music and fun music memories! Fairfield Harbour Community members are welcome to come out and enjoy the music and vibes!

A Week Full of The Working Blues Keeps Us In New Bern

On The Scene With Tracey Stones

54230588_1009932735884574_234960369225826304_n
I stayed around town all week working for New Bern Now, Ledger Magazine and NCMZ.LIVE but that did not stop me from finding music all around our beautiful town.

IMG_1136 (2)

On Saturday, I made my way to town to check out The Neuse River Rambles. Surf, Wind and Fire owner Danny Batten is one of the unsung heroes of our community. After Florence left him with damage to his home and business, Batten became some of the hardest working boots on the ground for this community. Actively meeting with business leaders and citizens while planning new ways to revitalize our downtown and jump-start his own business; he is a great asset and positive force for our community.

IMG_1140 (2)

Batten is not only a business owner but a banjo player too. When we first met Batten here in the blog, it was 2016 and he was playing with Merchant’s Road Band. Nowadays he is pick’n notes and offering harmonies for The Neuse River Ramblers. Last Saturday marked their third performance and it was rather a charming way to welcome St. Patrick’s Day Weekend. Quite frankly, anytime you can find your way downtown and discover live music, it is a wonderful thing!

Business Development Makes #DowntownNBRocks

In his spare time, Batten squeezes in early morning meetings in an effort to help jump-start New Bern’s come back, post-Florence. One of the groups that meets and plans revitalization projects for downtown is the Downtown Business Council.

I was recently invited to an events-planning meeting, where I learned there would be more live music coming to the downtown.  That is always thrilling to report. You will be able to keep up with the news and developments of this new series, that is being deemed Saturday Sessions through Folks Journal. They will be partnering with the DBC and Swiss Bear, all working in conjunction with The New Bern Parks and Recreation Department. To present us with FREE LIVE MUSIC,for all that visit and shop New Bern.

Though ncmz.live won’t be involved with these music events, I can tell you that next month is already scheduled and a press release was issued. Here are some of those details as per that release, so that you can get an idea of what is in store for us!

Saturday Sessions

The Saturday Sessions in Bear Plaza are rotating music and art weekends located in the heart of downtown New Bern, North Carolina. Saturday Sessions run from 1pm-5pm and begin Saturday April 6, 2019 and will run every Saturday until Mumfest weekend in October.

The first Saturday Session programming on April 6 includes live music by Sometimes Lions, a Greenville based duo singing and playing your favorite covers. They feature their own original songs, sponsored by FOLKS Journal, courtesy of Toyota New Bern, playing from 1pm-2:30pm. The second half of the Saturday Sessions is sponsored by Swiss Bear, Inc. and will feature original music from the singer/songwriters of the Carrboro, NC based North Carolina Songwriters Co-op. Renowned bluegrass band Neville’s Quarter will be playing from 3pm-5pm. More information about the band is available online at www.nevillesquarter.com and on the North Carolina Songwriters Co-op website at www.ncsongwriters.org.

Not Just Music, Art too

April 13, 2019 will be the first Art Saturday during Saturday Sessions in Bear Plaza. This program runs from 1pm-5pm and will feature an assortment of local artists. Local YA author Leslie Tall Manning will be having conversations and selling her books. Chris Wagner from The Sanctuary Gallery will be selling his work and demonstrate air painting alongside fellow gallery members. Local wellness guru and Kundalini yoga instructor Jenn Prem Arjan Pittman will be selling her holistic handmade jewelry. Artist and West Craven Middle School teacher Noël McKelvey of Blissworks will be demonstrating and selling her handmade whimsical card creations. Hope Baucher from A Hopeful Balance Yoga Studio will be providing instructors and classes in basic yoga and restoration poses. Reiki master and massage therapist Catherine Ould will be providing chair massage and reiki treatments.

Special Saturday Sessions children’s programming is available. Between 1pm-5pm the second and fourth Saturdays indoors at the The Next Chapter Books and Art and the first and third Saturdays outside of The Craven Arts Council/Bank of the Arts. Children of all ages are encouraged to paint #downtownNBrocks and hide them around town. The Craven Arts Council/Bank of the Arts will also be the host location of Saturday Session Storytimes,, held the second and fourth Saturdays at 1pm and 3pm. Please join us as books about community, nature, and neighborhood are shared alongside beautiful local works of art on display.

Speaking of Banjo Playing Business Owners

This seems to be a trend when you look about our wonderful town, Banjo playing business owners. I was speaking with George Oliver not long before press time which brought the idea to mind. Oliver is another stellar citizen actively involved in helping the rebuild of the town.

It was nice talking to Oliver about some comedic business with Walk-In BathTub, and while we were on the phone he told me about his family’s show last weekend at Bank Of The Arts, where At The Gallery featured the music and story of June Carter and Johnny Cash.

The performance went so well that they have decided to bring it again to the community. This time they will perform on Friday, June 7, 2019, at The New Bern Civic Theater. Mark your calendars and make plans to be a part of a wonderful night of music and stories. This performance will be a fundraiser for the New Bern Civic Theater itself.  That is great news and another example of how Oliver and his family work overtime in assisting and serving our community.

Mondays Means Blues at The Brown

Things were swinging when I got to the Dirty Bird more accurately know as  The Brown Pelican on Monday evening. Chirs Buttitta was back on the bass and a few more guitarist joined the fun. Some of those that I caught on the carpet this week include, open mic host and guitarist for 3rd Degree Bern, Brian Mac; solo player, Randy Moore, plus Tommy Duzan Sr. Hammering out the harmonica was Lee Tibbetts and kicking in the drums was Tom Parker. Big Jim was leading the charge and before I left I was jumping and jiving about!

This weekly offering has been a wonderful pick me up for New Bern and its music lovers. Thank you for coming out and showing your support for this weekly blues offering. We look forward to bringing you more fun nights from New Bern. This weekly blues treat is now followed up with HONKY TONK TUESDAY. That is the night made for all you country jammers. Mike Watkins is offering this weekly treat and all are welcome to come out and share the love.

When we come back tomorrow to finish out our fun week, we will stop here for open mic Thursday as well. This means that The Dirty Bird aka The Brown Pelican is now offering live music 5 days a week! ROCK ON!! Big thanks to bar owner Heather Haiss for all she does to support live music!

Mid Week Blues Bites

For those that like to dine and drink their blues away, you should consider joining Big Jim and the guys at The City Stage New Bern. That is where Kohler offers his mid-week session of blues education. Opening the stage to jammers to join him after the first set, this is always a fun and inspiring way to spend Wednesday evenings. Fun is found here from 7-9 each Wednesday!

54407630_1014752018735979_903738561633714176_o

Currently, we are working on raising funds for Big Jim Kohler to lay down some tracks. The blues master has been on a healing journey for the past 18 months. Along the way, he has regained his strength and found his focus. He has remained sober and committed to living a healthier life.

Since arriving here in New Bern, Kohler has not released a new disc. With a new lease on life, the blues-man is ready to keep busy in the studio and on the road. To date, we have raised just over $1400 of the $4000 needed to get the disc done. For those interested in helping to fuel the mission please direct your contributions here:

Big Jim Kohler’s Kickstarter Campaign

For friends and fans of the blues-man, you can come to hang out at Sara’s Big Apple, where he will be offering songs from 6-8 pm tomorrow evening. We hope to see you there.

Rocking Around the Region

Durham, NC

The Blue Note Grill

MARCH 22, 2019 · FRIDAY * 9PM * $10

Touring and playing for many years, Armand brings years of experience and loads of talent to the stage. High energy blues and R&B. Get here early for this one..oh, and bring your dancing shoes!

Joining Armand will be Carter Minor, Jim Henderson, FJ Ventre, Kelly Pace, and Becky Beeston Lenchek.

After a nearly a two decade apprenticeship playing behind the likes of Skeeter Brandon, Walter “Lightnin’ Bug” Rhodes and Nappy Brown, Chapel Hill, NC based guitarist Armand Lenchek assumed the role of bandleader with a vengeance on his solo debut, Everything I Need. He’s back again, still in front of the rotating crew of blues breakers he calls Bluesology.

Although he can shred with the best of them, Lenchek has mastered one of the most difficult skills in any guitarist’s repertoire: restraint. He plays every note he needs t, and not a note more. Sometimes that’s a blistering fury, sometimes it’s a laid back shuffle but every time it’s just what the song calls for.

Milestones Marked by Area Music Makers

A few music makers from around our region enjoy the celebration of milestones on the music scene! Let’s celebrate these moments! Starting the celebration at home with our own, Bryan Mayer Band!

On The Scene with Tracey Stones

Though it is rare, occasionally I miss the bus. Last weekend was one of those occasions, as we know my car keeps me hovering close to home nowadays with her high mileage (399,458) and faulty replacement parts (namely the radiator and water pump.)

If I made the scene as I try to do each weekend, I would have headed down to watch the Second Annual Carolina Country Music Awards, at The House of Blues in North Myrtle Beach, on Saturday night. Had I done that, I would have a lot of great new pics to share of New Bern’s 2019 Bass Player of the Year, Mike Sandvig.

I was on hand last year for the First Annual Carolina Country Music Awards, where Sandvig was nominated for the Bass Player of the Year. This year, he walked away with the Sweet Tea Award.

I have been friends with the bass man for more than five years. I met him not long after he came out of his retirement from music. He was the General for Big Jim Kohler and I for one, am glad he emerged back on the scene. We all benefit when people follow their dreams. Congratulations Mike!

The Bryan Mayer Band was up for several awards this year, eight in all. They walked away with a trophy for Tour Of The Year for their Little Bit Naughty Tour. Here’s to a more exciting year ahead for the country award winners!

Pause For The Cause And Clean Water too!

Here around town last Saturday evening, Garret Biss invited friends, fans and family to take a pause for the cause and help him celebrate his 38th birthday, with a celebration that helped to raise awareness and money for a foundation he created in 2014.

One Million Goal was founded after Biss returned to civilian life following his time with the Marines. It was during his service that he traveled to so many regions, where he saw a need for a greater awareness about clean drinking water.

Since starting the nonprofit, Biss and his team have raised more than $50,000, completed 20 missions and taken several trips to Nicaragua to install filtration systems. These systems have been strategically installed at schools and other areas where they can help many in the community, including high traffic areas with young children. To date, they have installed seven systems.

To make the night fun for all, Biss invited area music makers to play for the crowd. Opening the night at 5 pm was jazz crooner John Van Dyke, next came three-quarters of the Neuse River Ramblers, who offered a bluegrass set. Gabby Christie was the third entertainer with her Batts project, closing out the night was Greenville’s talented Mandy Mears.
