From the Crystal Coast to the Mountains of NC, the Music Plays

On The Scene With Tracey Stones

There is Music All Around NC

Big Jim Blues News

IMG_1652 (2).JPG

Big Jim Kohler was bringing his band and his blues to the City Stage twice a month, since their opening in July, on the third and fourth Tuesday of each month. However last week that ended. The live entertainment venue announced that going forth they will be hosting trivia and karaoke nights on Tuesday nights. They will be offering drink specials as well.

Though that sounds like the blues for music fans, here is the best part of the change. Big Jim Kohler and Band will now be the featured guest each Wednesday night from 7-9 pm. Be sure to mark your calendars going forth into the new year. The mid-week blues buster will surely be a welcome addition to the area.

Today the blues stringer and his bride will be helping out by providing the entertainment at the New Village Brewery in Oriental, NC. They will be doing their part to raise funds for the students that attend Pamlico Community College. There will be free music and free pizza too. Also, they will be pouring pints all day, to help the cause and they will also be holding a silent auction to contribute to the funds generated on this day!

Music plays from 4-7 featuring Kathy Kohler the first hour! Get there early as you don’t want to miss this blues belter!

The Dusty Trio in a Treehouse

Last night I headed to the Crystal Coast to check out things at The Treehouse Beer CompanyLocated in Cedar Point on Highway 24, this is a fun place offering a good selection of beer and live entertainment each weekend. They have a nice backyard to accommodate many guests. There is cornhole set up as well as other games, including a game room indoors. Best of all they have a nice stage out back for the bands.

On the stage last night was the Dusty Trio featuring Hank Barbee on guitar and vocals, Jim Durham on sax and backing vocals, and Matt Henderson on bass. This is three-fourths of the Dust Parade. Tonight the full band will be rocking Cru Bar, 120 Turner St., Beaufort, NC. Free music kicks off at 8:30 pm. To keep up with the band check out on Facebook by clicking:

Meet Dmitri Resnick from Chapel Hill Sharing his Blues in Newport

While visiting with Hank Barbee I ran into stinger Matt Miller, who mentioned the fact that there was someone he never heard before playing at Carolina Home & Garden. Loaded with that information, I split the scene and headed to the Garden to see what I could find out.

It was there that I made the acquaintance of  Dmitri Resnik, who calls Chapel Hill, NC home. What a wonderful music treat it was to meet Resnik. I thoroughly enjoyed his slide blues guitar offerings. I was glad to catch the final few songs of his show and it was enough for me to know that I will be checking him out again with his band in the future.

The singer-songwriter has made music a part of his life’s journey. Seasoned in the blues, he offers a refreshing take on the music I love most of all. I enjoyed hearing his original works during our short time together last night.

For those looking to catch some great slide work and old-fashioned blues music be sure to catch Dmitri each Thursday at The City Tap in Pittsboro, NC. Offering the sounds each week from 6-8 pm, this is a great way to wrap up a work day! You can also check out the stringer on ReverbNation by following this link:

Back in the Bern, It’s Bliss At the Bruin

I made it back to town last night, in time to check out a couple more gigs going down right here in my hometown.  First stop brought me to The Thirsty Bruin, 224 Middle St., New Bern, NC, where I got to enjoy the last couple songs offered by Patrick Bliss. This stringer is an emotional player and offers many familiar songs throughout his set list.

Holt Up Visits From Statesville, NC to Rock the Dirty Bird!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The final show I caught last night was that of Holt Up, a band from the Statesville, NC region. Interestingly enough, they have family in New Bern, NC. When they were visiting this past Summer, they caught an open mic night at the Brown Pelican and not long after their jams, they were booking this date to bring us the good grooves. The trio of players features Ryan Lippard back behind the kit, Hailey Holt offer vocals, guitar, and ukelele. Joining her on guitar and vocals is her mentor and father Darren Holt. This band offered grooves from classic rockers to heavy metal. They are a unique trio with a great mix of music to keep things interesting. For those looking for a new band to check out, be sure to give this one your consideration. You can check them out on Facebook by following this link:

Thomas Street Tavern has been open for 20 years now! We are prepared to throw one hell of an anniversary party featuring the Hurricane Bob BandThe Jeff Sipe Trioand Travers Brothership.

The Jeff Sipe Trio:

Jeff began to play drums in the sixth grade. Then In 1975, Jeff’s first stepping stone was attending the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music. — One of Jeff’s dreams finally came true when he was accepted to Berklee in 1977. While at Berklee, Jeff studied under Bob Kaufman and Bill Norine, he attended clinics given by Alan Dawson and was taken under by his mentor Lee Venters. J

Travers Brothership:

“This is a band that possesses a soulful magic and heart you don’t find in many young bands. This is real art.” – Danny Harlen Mote, Lucky Trend Music

Twin brothers Eric and Kyle Travers have been making music and stunning audiences since they first began performing together at 13 years old.

In 2012 the twin brothers formed their latest project, Travers Brothership, an Alternative, Soul, and Funk ensemble based out of Asheville, NC.

It is safe to say The Brothership stands out amongst most acts climbing the charts in the U.S. today. Why do they stand out so boldly amongst the others? They wish to make each concert a unique and unforgettable experience. Utilizing the band’s unmatched live energy and superior songwriting, they create a live atmosphere that transforms an audience into a community. A Travers Brothership concert is best described as a wild block party, and this is a party you don’t wanna miss.

Travers Brothership is currently touring the U.S. in support of “A Way To Survive” and writing songs for their highly anticipated sophomore release.

“There are hundreds of great bands aiming for the major leagues, but few of them bring such a complete package as Travers Brothership. In this horse race, I’ve found where I’m putting my money.” – Brian Swenk, Homegrown Music Network

Speaking of Anniversary Parties, local photographer and music promoter Michael Harris has much to celebrate! Here is what’s up with this talented promo man:
“Hey folks, Michael Harris here. It is hard to believe that it has been five years of promoting music, photography, and pushing events here in North Carolina with HF Music And Media Group!

What started out as a hobby photographing bands with a disposable camera has turned into a way to help musicians, models, and artists get seen, heard, and introduced to a whole new audience. This has truly been an amazing journey, one for which I can’t thank everyone enough. Without you, I couldn’t do what I do.

Headlining our five-year anniversary bash – good times rockers Station from NYC, with support from Raleigh trashy glam rockers Babylon Shakes and some friends of mine from way back Dirty Remnantz, plus The Adam Hill Band kicks the party off at 8:30 pm with a set of rockin’ electric blues.

This is going to be a special night! Thank you, everyone, for your support, this has meant the world to me.

Admission is just $10 and the show starts at 8 pm so let’s have a blast!!!”
