Dream Big and Build A Music Community

Dream Big and Make it Your Mission

Dream Big and Give Them Your Heart!

If I had my way, no one would suffer, more music would play and even the grown children would dance! I believe in my talents and I work hard in my voluntary efforts to build a stronger music community! I have reached the point of no turning back because I believe that we can do this…but I can’t do it without your help! Since 2015, I have been working one business so to build another. I set out with the idea of taking my time as I showed people my talents. From March 2015 until September 2018, I could afford to offer this service which was supported by my day job.

As a writer and a promoter, I feel there is an important role to fill on the music scene. I use my talents as a videographer to stream live on Facebook and my skills as a still photographer, so to collect pictures that support the words I write and publish on this site. The goal is to set out each night that  I can and find live music locally. Then, when people say there is nothing to do around here, I shake my head, and hand them a card! After I do that, I find a new follower and friend on the music bus. How magnificent! Since 2016,  we have been publishing a minimum of two stories each week. I do have a man behind the scenes helping me. Meet my editor, Breeze!

My best friend and favorite human, meet our editor; BREEZE!

♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

The Facts of the Matter

I am always grateful to those that take the time to read about my musical journeys. Thank you for being here. Throughout this adventure, I have done my best for musicians and music venues alike and I have done it freely, without asking for much from anyone. I am an observer and a storyteller, whose favorite subject is music and favorite characters are musicians.

As the story goes, and most people already know it, I am a house cleaning contractor. This is how I have made my living for the past 13 years. Tracey’s Clean Sweep is my third established cleaning business, over the course of my cleaning career. The reason for that is because I am a rambling soul who always follows her heart. I sold my first business in 2009 before moving to Canada. In 2010 I started my second business in Louisiana and would relocate and register my business of the same name here in NC,  in 2013. I am currently working with zero employees since Florence, which also left me with zero desire to train anyone. Fact is, I was moving on before the flood.

To this day and for 13 years, I have been involved with every job. I love that my hard work is helpful to the people I serve. It’s an honest living and rewards of the instant gratification are endless. I walk into homes that are messy and when I leave they shine! That never grows old. But I do and am, daily! And the fact is, it hurts me now as I near 50 years old, so I know I won’t be able to sustain doing this work like I do, up and through the age of retirement. I just won’t! What you are witnessing here is nothing short of the backup plan.

Build Your Biggest Dream

As a rule, house cleaners are disposable since disposable income pays for their services in many cases. When I hit a lull and my son was 17 and talking college, a few years ago, I was faced with a choice. I could use my free time to get a remedial paying job to help one company with my skills or use my free time to create another business and help a music community grow stronger.  Being innovative in my mind, always, I invested time in the latter and developed this site and a promotions business to support it. Tracey Stones Productions is that business which publishes this blog. You can visit my website at www.traceystonesproductions.com.

I would love to see this blog site offer daily stories from many writers, in many regions, around the state. Currently, I am only one person writing and I am working hard at two businesses, doing it with old equipment and exhausting myself along the way! I want for this to be my only work each day for the rest of my life! The only thing I lack is the revenue needed for expansion.

Erect the Stage

After dedicating two full years to the mission of promoting local music, I was exploring options of exiting the cleaning business. I was considering the sale of my house cleaning contracts to several buyers. The idea was to invest the sale of that business so to jump start this business. And then Florence came along and wiped out so much of my workload there was hardly enough work left after the water receded to keep me afloat. Today there is nothing to sell today and I really don’t care to dwell on that, because so many others around me are hurting in a far worse way.

Over the years, because of my passion for music, my following on social media has grown considerably. I can’t even keep up, to be honest! And yes, I will ask you your name ten times, please don’t be offended. No matter how many get in the zone, I want even more people on board the music bus! This build is going to take a village and I know so many music-loving supporters that I know the build is possible.

After the storm, I just wanted to help my community however I could. I delivered meals, I distributed emergency relief buckets, I went looking for items that people needed.  And I went live to ask for help.

Those people, those beautiful followers of mine answered the call and sent whatever I requested! First, it was masks and gloves, then cleaning supplies and personal hygiene supplies and now it is household goods; linens, plates, lamps, furniture, curtains, etc.

Follow Your Heart

The work you see here, on this site, it’s my passion. It’s my heartbeat. And I feel it is important to work for the community I serve. This is not a new path for me. This is where my life was on course to go, once upon a time,  until I decided to raise my beautiful son alone. I took myself out of the game! I just could not be out in the bars until 1 or 2 in the morning, which was more the norm back then;  and be a good day mom too. I stopped writing after his birth in 1998, and I stopped promoting music entirely, for a full decade, in 2005. That is when I left the music scene in NJ/PA to rebuild a life with the help of my village, my family, in NC.

I took all of the skills I learned in promoting musicians and applied it to building my cleaning business. Within months of that practice,  I learned that I could make more money promoting my electric vacuum than I ever did when promoting an electric guitar. This came in handy when I looked down to see my 6-year-old looking up to me. I volunteered at his school once a week, and I built a cleaning business around putting him on and getting him off the bus. I have no regrets about putting my life on hold to watch and help him grow.

To this day, I work from 8 am until 2 pm in my cleaning business. I have cleaned homes, businesses, new construction, churches, and the highlight of it all came when I was picked to be the cleaning contractor for the film crew that filmed the A&E Series, Duck Dynasty. I did that for the first three seasons, until returning to New Bern in late 2012.

Stay Interesting

That was the Louisiana chapter and it was there that I cleaned for one of the coolest people I ever met. Sidney Wilhite’s home was over 18,000 square feet and I loved cleaning every square inch of it.  It was like a museum and people did take tours of it on the regular. It took two days a week to clean it all and every week I learned something new!

Mr. Sidney is the only person I ever met with a cannon on his front porch and a lion that needed dusting.

As exciting as it might be to hear about all the toilets I have scrubbed, I truly get a thrill out of telling people about music. Music is healing and promoting it is something I was doing before I graduated high school.

The highlights of my published writing career are mentioned on my bio page and my greatest dream remains to heal the world with music. Bringing people together for the celebration of music is my only mission in this next career. I feel it is a worthy mission because we are one hurting society, with many different pains holding us back from being our true self!  There are plenty of needs and causes out there and many hearts can mend with help of music.

Ask For Help

IMG_3817.JPG

I mention all of this because I now need the help of my community to get this to the next level. And I promise if you help me get it there, not only will the tip jars and donations links disappear, but I will be paying it forward for the rest of my days. Not just by paying it back to you in my services, but your friends and neighbors and their friends too!

I feel like my efforts have already paid it forward for the venues and the bands that I cover. Lately, though, my field of dreams keeps growing but my reality keeps closing in on me. It’s just a rough spot I guess. I am currently driving a 2002 GMC Yukon with nearly 400,000 miles on it. Last week a musician who seeks my attention asked me in an off-handed way when was I going to make it out to see his band near Winston Salem. I understand he has been inviting me out for 10 months and, as much as I would love to say tomorrow, I have to rather admit that I am stuck in town because I can’t get out of here.

My car repairs are far more than I can afford and I’m pretty sure that they are not worth it either. Some days we just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other and hope for the best. I  know I did my best in freely putting 200,000 miles on my truck chasing music and telling people about it!  Now she is tired and I am even more exhausted trying to keep her.

Keep Dreaming and Dream Big!

My biggest hopes today are finding a local car dealership to consider NCMZ.LIVE as a great advertising outlet, and support my efforts with a better running, good on gas vehicle. Something that is cheaper than $65 per tank and offers more than 14 miles a gallon, would mean improvement! History notes, that I will drive their product all over the state and talk about them on my journey as I thank them each step of the way!

It is my next biggest hope that the readers and those that have benefited from my efforts would consider helping in the expansion. We can grow this to be an app for finding local live music but that takes revenue to make it happen. I will gladly advertise your business to build that revenue. Another way to help, for those who don’t have a business to advertise, is filling the tip jar.   http://Paypal.me/ncmz Every little bit helps!  I know that once I have what is needed to get this off the ground, we are going to rock the world!

The road ahead is rather exciting and I am thrilled that you are a part of the journey. As far as I can see, there is a lot of work to be done and more hands always make for lighter work. Thanks for being here and hanging out. You make the journey more fun and I thank you!

Behind The Scenes With Tracey Stones

The reason I started things off differently today and put the light on myself for a change is that Charles Tendell encouraged me to put my story out there! It happened on Thursday night. I was invited to the Charles Tendell Studios to be a guest on New Bern Live. It was a nice opportunity to share some of my dreams and visions for this community I love! Before leaving the studio, Tendell encouraged me to reach out to people and tell them my story! I know one thing,  I dream daily about bringing healing vibes to people through the fun of music. For anyone interested in checking out that interview, please follow this link and join me in dreaming big and healing with music!!! It really will take a village to get us to the next level of growth and development.

Let’s Have A Conversation With Tracey Stones of NCMZ.LIVE

I truly appreciate all of the love and support my followers offer me in my missions with music. I look forward to where this path will lead us all! We are going to do great things and be an example for the world to follow.

On the Scene With Tracey Stones

As we concluded above, I have been hovering around the home base for a few weeks now, due to car repairs that are needed for safe travels. Luckily there are lots of people around here to love and many music makers to talk about!

Big Jim Brings the Blues and his Fans Bring The Toys for Tots

I started things off last night, just over the bridge in James City. That is where we found Big Jim Kohler rocking the crowd at BrUtopia, with his steady rhythm section and soulful bride. Along with offering the freshest beer, friends gathered and brought toys for the Marines on hand for the Toys for Tots drive. Before the night ended the box was overflowing. What an awesome town we call home! It’s was a wonderful reminder that there are a lot of kids who will need toys this year, so please give generously if you can!

Also adding to the groove last night was the harmonica player from Colorado, Lee Tibbetts, who came out on Wednesday night to jam with Kohler. His reaction to being in the presence of Kohler is one I can relate to. I remember moving back to town in 2013 and stumbling upon Jim in Swansboro, NC. It was then I turned my attention back to my true love for music. This is why I rallied for this man’s life and health last year when he fell ill. He inspires my path and helps me grow.

To check him out for yourself, stop out this month for one of his Wednesday night blues offerings at The City Stage. The band plays from 7-9 pm.

Bluegrass and Beer Was the Theme at The Bruin

The night was billed as Seth Smith and Friends for those who don’t know, Smith is one of the players with The Hot Buttered Grits, New Bern’s jam band. Smith was joined by his grits counterpart John Johndrow on guitar and his friend Beth D’Angelo, offering bass and vocals. D’Angelo also plays with the band Cigar Box Jesus & The Revelation.

Beyond the folk sound and bluegrass selections were the fun jams that everyone enjoyed. It was a fun night with like-minded friends sharing the stage!

Carrboro Acts Makes an Appearance at The Brown Pelican

Meet XOXOK

The first duo we heard at the front of the room was that of XOXOK, a duo featuring the soulful vocals and melodic guitar sounds of Keenan Jenkins and the twistedly talented beats of Joe MacPhail. This duo got together about two years ago and have some fun when given the opportunity to make music together. The Carrboro based outfit has a Facebook page which you can visit by clicking:

XOXOK

♥  ♥  ♥  ♥

The Oblations Close Out The Night

Next to the stage front came The Oblations. This Carbrro act has played around town several times in the past couple of years. They are a talented act offering the talents of Joe MacPhail on drums keyboards and vocals while his music brother from another mother, Daniel Fields offers the guitar parts and adds vocals as well. They were introduced to us by our friends at GEM Productions.

What’s exciting about this talented unit is that you are watching two guys on stage while looking for the full band. Fields work out the bass and guitar parts with his handcrafted six string, made for him by his father.  Meanwhile, in the other corner, MacPhail offers keyboards and drums while knocking the vocals out too.

Both of the groups featured at the dirty bird last night offer music that takes the soul on an original journey. If you ever make your way to Carrboro be sure to keep an ear out for their efforts. You will be entertained!

Blackbeard’s Hosted Saltwater Gold

I made it out to Blackbeard’s Triple Play in just enough time to hear the last couple selections offered by The Saltwater Gold Band. This group hails from Oriental and offers the sounds of classic rock that people love. They also write their own music and mix up the night with some fresh works created by their guitar player, Chris Daniels, and lead singer Mark Hoff.

Keeping the Beats in New Bern Last Night We Find Some Soul Boogie, Party People and Talented Stringers

On The Scene With Tracey Stones

44877913_10217426494841078_3663059185920114688_n.jpg

Keeping the beats close to home last night, it seems when you ride around in a vehicle with nearly 400,000 miles, sometimes it is wise to stay close to home base. Lucky for me, we live in New Bern, NC and that means plenty of music options for your weekend fun.

Caffeinated Soul Boogie

Last night I started things off in James City, where I stopped by BrÜtopia, to enjoy the sounds of the New Bern based band known as Caffeinated Soul Boogie. They offered their grooves last night from 7-10 pm, to a packed house of onlookers and listeners. This local act features a father and daughter duo, that has expanded to become a full band with great songs to share. Making the music is singer Darria Yeager, who has the voice of an angel, her father Derrick Moore plays the guitar
Javier Sinobas is the one offering the bass notes while Tanner Bright keeps the beats.

In addition to the sweet sounds they make, the band welcomed local blues legend Bob Clyde to the stage, to help out with some harmonica parts. It was a great night of music and keeping beats. The crowd was enjoying the food being served by Nest Cafe and the beer brewed right there at BrÜtopia.

To get familiar with this fun area band that offers a mix of folk, Americana and blues music be sure to check out their band page on Facebook:

Spare Change Offers the Party Grooves

I can’t tell you how many times I have come close to seeing this next band. But let me just say, it has been more than a few times that I just missed the rocking sounds of Spare Change. In fact, it happened just weeks ago. My case in point, they rocked the morning away at the Amped Up for Youtilities event in Morehead City. They were finishing up their last song when I was rounding the corner and making my way to the stage.

Last night, however, the LaGrange based band rocked the night away on the back deck at Blackbeard’s where plenty of people joined the fun. Making the grooves come to life in this popular band are Jordan Rouse, guitar and vocals, Jeff Morris in the back behind the kit; Veronica Wall upfront and leading the vocals. I am unclear on who is holding down the bass, and who rocked the other guitar, but all in all this band is a lot of fun.

The draw here of course is, they play songs that bring us back to when life was carefree and fun. They play popular songs that we all know and love, and many that make us want to dance. Tonight the band has a gig lined up at The Deck at River Twist. The band will be rocking the popular grooves tonight from 8:30-11:30 pm. Kristie Lynn Brings It To The Brown Pelican

Here again is another artist that I have been hoping to catch for some time. I rather enjoy her live video feeds on Facebook and she is familiar to many around town. Kristie Lynn hails from Wilmington, NC and offers friends and fans an acoustic show with great favorites, familiar to most. Along with that, she is a talented singer-songwriter with a list of songs she has composed. She plays her songs throughout the Downeast region and you can keep up with the busy artist by liking her Facebook page:

The concert takes place at Bank of the Arts, 317 Middle St, on November 17

. The concert begins at 7pm, with a pre-concert discussion of the composer’s life starting at 6:30 pm. Her career included numerous Billboard hits, 2 Grammy Awards, induction in the Songwriter Hall of Fame, and the ASCAP Founder’s Award. Hit’s include “You’re So Vain,” “Anticipation,” and “That’s the Way I’ve Always Heard It Should Be.”

Genre: Funk
Location: New Orleans, LA

George Porter, Jr. is best known as the bassist of The Meters, along with Art Neville, Leo Nocentelli and Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste. The group was formed in the mid 60’s and came to be recognized as one of the progenitors of funk then called R&B. The Meters disbanded in 1977 but reformed in 1989. Today the original group still plays the occasional reunions but the Funky Meters, of which Porter and Neville are still members, most prominently keeps the spirit alive.

Few bass players in the history of modern New Orleans music are as storied as George Porter Jr. During the course of a career spanning more than four decades, Porter has not only made a deep impression with his work in The Meters, but he’s notched session work with artists as diverse as Paul McCartney, Jimmy Buffett, David Byrne, Patti LaBelle, Robbie Robertson, Tori Amos, Taj Mahal, Ryan Montbleau and live performances with Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Warren Haynes, John Scofield, Steve Kimock, Eric Krasno (and including recent studio releases with Warren Haynes and Bill Kreutzmann) just to name a few.

Porter is also the bandleader of his own unique long-term project the Runnin’ Pardners. He has assembled some seasoned and talented musicians to join him on this project. Familiar Pardners – Brint Anderson (guitar) and, Michael Lemmler (keyboards) and rising stars on the New Orleans music scene Khris Royal (saxophone) and Terrence Houston (drums). George Porter Jr. plans to keep a smile on his face.” I feel like I am working towards something that will be remembered.”

Today, Porter features that epic bottom end in his latest ventures with his own band the Runnin’ Pardners.

FLOW TRIBE

Genre: Funk/Rock/Psychedelic/Blues
Location: New Orleans, LA

Few bands arouse a crowd into a collective shake like Flow Tribe. The six-member band’s onstage chemistry reflects a seamless combination of soul and movement, that hits the audience within the first few notes. Virgin listeners and avid fans alike are drawn in by the distinctive sound that feels both familiar and original. Outfitted for each performance in colorful, carefully selected suits, it’s clear their focus is sharp and the party has begun. This is the work of professional musicians who’ve found their passion and are living a dream where everyone’s welcome.

Second line brass and Cuban-Caribbean rhythms meld with R&B, soul, rock, and hip-hop beat, in high-energy performances that turn every show into a celebration. New Orleans has influenced itself, the unparalleled free and easy city weaving its way into track after track of original scores, that make up a single definition of sound, which Flow Tribe has dubbed “backbone-cracking music.”

K.C. O’Rorke (vocals, trumpet), John-Michael Early (harmonica, washboard, vocals, keyboard), Russell Olschner (drums), Chad Penot (bass, vocals), Bryan Santos (guitar, timbales), and Mario Palmisano (guitar) are native New Orleanians and high school pals, who’ve been writing music and playing live shows since the band’s inception in 2004. Post-graduation they went their separate ways, but after Katrina each returned to their hometown, inherently becoming active members in the rebuilding of a community that’s stronger than ever. Flow Tribe may well be the city’s next music ambassadors.

NOVEMBER 17, 2018 · SATURDAY * 8PM * $25 SEATED / $20 STANDING

Juke Joint at the Edge of the World is the eleventh studio release from esteemed singer-songwriter Randall Bramblett, a multi-instrumentalist musician with a career spanning four decades. Highly sought-after for his creativity, as both a collaborator and skilled touring sideman, the legendary Georgian’s talent has earned him the respect of his peers and many of rock’s finest luminaries. While having shared stages with artists such as Steve Winwood, Bonnie Raitt, The Allman Brothers, and Widespread Panic, among others, it’s Bramblett’s own career as frontman where his artistry is truly on full display.

Deep into the self-described second act of his solo career, Bramblett aims to recreate the literature of the blues with music about nowhere people in nowhere lands. Conjuring equal parts Tom Waits, William Burroughs, and hallelujah chorus, his music again comes alive with this new collection of songs. With a commitment to the story of his characters and the necessary mutation of music, Bramblett has kept his solo career as fresh as the day it began.

This evolving engine of creativity is due, in large part, to the familiarity and bond shared with his band mates.

Come out for a special night of music and enjoy the great food too.

Hurricane Relief Was Amped Up in Morehead City Last Weekend

On the Scene With Tracey Stones

Hurricane Relief got “Amped Up” in Morehead City last weekend, with an assortment of local and regional bands coming together for a fun day of great music and community!. Thanks to that little, day-long, shindig; I had the pleasure of checking out a dozen bands in all, last weekend throughout my travels. I love weekends like that! Thanks for being here week after week! I love checking out our music scene together!

Probably most exciting about the past weekend was the hearing bands that I first saw when I set out on the scene as a live music blogger. In particular, The Spread and The Beaufort Blues Project. But there were others also. The thing that stood out for me was, the focus on local/regional music acts that brought our people together for the sole purpose of enjoying a day, making donations, offering hugs and healing, smiles and dancing. And best of all, this was a family friendly event that had kids and adults smiling throughout the morning, noon and night!

NC Seafood Festival and Big Rock Tournaments Offer a Fun Day on the Waterfront!

IMG_1263 (2).JPG

Even though the Annual North Carolina Seafood Festival had to be canceled this year, due to the destruction and devastation caused by Hurricane Florence, the committees of the area’s two big events (NC Seafood Festival and Big Rock Tournaments) got together to sponsor and bring a scaled-down version of the festival to the waterfront. It not only offered a bit of hope to residents but it was great fun for all who attended. The event served as a fundraiser for those affected. The proceeds will help pay the utility bills this winter.

Festival Chairperson Ed Stack said the decision to still hold an event was important to the community. Best of all, it featured live music throughout the day! And so, on Saturday, November 3, 2018, vendors set up to welcome people. Along with many vendors, that included a variety of food trucks, nonprofits, as well as crafters and artisans, Jaycee Park set up a big stage and the committees welcomed nine acts that offered 12 hours of entertainment, provided by local acts familiar to the Downeast region.

The organizations had chosen the Salvation Army as the recipient of designated funds raised from the event. The Salvation Army has a program within its framework that benefits families in need of assistance to pay their utility bills.

IMG_1128 (2)
The event kicked off at 11 AM, with the sound of Mike Corrado of Jacksonville, NC welcoming the first guests.

Following the opening set, Spare Change came next. The wildly popular party band who got the crowd pumped and ready for a fun afternoon in the sun on the waterfront. Although I did miss the first two opening acts, I was happy to be greeted by the familiar fun sounds of New Bern’s own family folk band, Strung Together

Family Folk Featured at Festival With New Bern’s Strung Together

Strung Together, features the Oliver Family with some adopted music members added along the way, to complete the mix. Family members include the clan created by George and Dare Oliver and their three children, Cat on bass and mandolin and offering stellar vocal work, Abigail on guitar, piano, and vocals and youngest son Mason, guitar and vocals. Rounding out the instrumentation are drummer boy and family friend, Nick Eickhoff. Adding more depth and dimension to the folk sounds offered is Addy Quinn on fiddle. It is thanks to Quinn that the band added Charlie Daniels’ most famed composition, “The Devil Went Down To Georgia” which closed out their set.

What some readers might not realize, the Olivers suffered great loss as their historic home directly across the street from the river, that tried to wash it away with a 10-foot surge. The family is rebuilding and still finding the time to offer their talent for the benefit of others in need. Tomorrow they will be in their hometown playing for the relief of homeless veterans. Come out to the Farmer’s Market on S. Front Street at 3 pm. Tickets will be available at the door. Rocking Relief for Homeless Veterans is now celebrating its third year. This year’s event features one great regional and four local bands.

Next week, Strung Together will be taking part in Carolina Lily Fest 2018 at the Brown Pelican. That event will benefit The Coastal Women’s Shelter. This annual fundraiser is happening on November 17, 2018, and Strung Together gets things going with music at 5 pm. To keep up with the band, like their page on Facebook:

The Spread Shows Up and Spreads Love With Music

Next came The Spread, based in Morehead City, NC. The hometown band brought their love for music and spread it all over the waterfront. This is one of the first bands I ran into, years ago when I got started on my journey of covering live music. I was taken by their unique blend of sounds and energy. Spreading a lot of love, sharing their love for music.

They are a five-piece band featuring front singer Kathryn Morgan, who offers a powerful presence with vocals that turn things up a notch. The singer is not the only one featured on vocals, in fact, she often exits the stage to feature the other talents that help her shine on stage. The full line-up behind Morgan includes Chris Jones, offering vocals and piano, Chris Taylor on lead guitar, Will Phetterplace behind the kit on drums, Phil Wilson offers bass, Chris White plays rhythm guitar. and newest sound maker, Jim Durham on saxophone.

They are one of the most original bands in the area. I always enjoy watching them share their music with the crowd. To learn more about this band, be sure to like their page on Facebook by clicking  here

The Beaufort Blues Project Keeps Gospel of Love Alive

Beaufort Blues Project, offered a great set of gospel-fueled blues and soul-soaked songs, as the band was featured in the late afternoon. Here again is another band I met years ago and have enjoyed several times in the last three years, since embarking on the blogging trail. I saw both The Spread and BBP for the first time at The Backstreet Pub in Beaufort. Both bands impressed me for different reasons. This band features Jim Durham on sax, Hope Sanderson on the drums, Marjorie Landen vocals, Neal Beasley guitar, Talley Best keys and Carlos Sanderson on bass.

They offer a great mix of music, that also includes a couple of their own compositions. Offering fan favorites that highlight the bands’ talents, you will always find something familiar and fun to groove you.

If you have been missing out on knowing these talented area bands, you can check them out next week when they join the bill to help raise the money needed to rebuild Pamlico Middle School. Band Together For Hurricane Relief will feature The Pamlico Sound (The school’s Jazz Ensemble), Brant Island Strings of Pamlico County, Beaufort Blues Project from Beaufort, The Spread from Morehead City and The Dust Parade, featuring Hank Barbee, from Wilmington, NC.

The upcoming event will be taking place next Sunday, November 18, 2018, at the Pamlico High School’s AH Hatsell Auditorium. Doors open at 3 pm and music plays at 4 pm. There is a recommended donation of $5.00 per person payable at the door.

Carolina Swamp Dogs Give Up The Gritty Blues

Opening the evening line up was the blues trio based out of Jacksonville, NC, known as The Carolina SwampdogsCSD is a 3 man blues band born in the swamps of Parris Island and Camp Lejeune. Combined, the members of CSD served over 85 years in the United States Marine Corps and that experience, coupled with their love of the Blues, results in a raw, sharp take on the old Blues standards.

Based in Onslow County, this group offered more authentic blues with the music of Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, and Albert King, being highlighted during their gritty blues set. The trio features Gary Oles offering vocals, harmonica, and percussions, Tommy Langlois on the kick drum and snare along with guitar, and Matt Ingram offering the bass lines. Along with great blues standards that get the hips shaking, the band also threw in one of their own compositions.

The Sun Sets on the Acoustic Sounds of Mikele Buck Duo

Next up we went country with the local crooner, who recently made a name for himself with an appearance on The Voice this season, Mikele Buck. He did not bring his band, but he offered a great show as a duo act with band brother Brandon Ross, also on the acoustic six-string and adding vocals. The full band was in town and performed following the day-long fundraiser. They actually rocked Jack’s Waterfront Bar with the full band ensemble. Offering great songs that offer glimpses into his own life, Buck and Ross gave a great performance to the growing evening crowd.

If you missed the action last weekend but you were hoping to catch up with the Mikele Buck Band, they will be rocking Salt Bar, located at 325 Mangrove Dr., Emerald Isle. Come out tonight for the fun times. Doors open at 9 pm, with music that will have you boot scooting going down on the dance floor from 10 pm till 1 am.

Band of Oz Brings On the Night and the Dancers

Next up we all went to the beach and got groovy with the legendary Band of Oz. This band has been making music and collecting fans since they got together in 1967, to play frat parties and high school proms. They are one of the longest running bands in our area, with a history on the road of full-time entertaining crowds since 1977. Today they still bring their fun show to festivals and fundraisers all over the country and spend a great amount of time offering their talents to our area. With a full horn section, keys, guitar, bass, drums and vocals backed by harmonies, this band always brings a good time front and center.

They do have a show tonight at The Surf Club in Wrightsville Beach, NC. Once again they will be on the bill raising money with music. To learn more be sure to visit the Band of Oz website by clicking this link:

Bryan Mayer Band Closes Out a Great Day of Music

Before the night was over, we were also rocked by local country crooner Bryan Mayer, who has been making a tall name for himself on the country circuit. His band closed out a great day and night of music celebration, in the hopes of providing relief to those living in Carteret County and surrounding areas affected by Florence! This New Bern based band is always a big draw at shows around our area and beyond. Last Saturday was no exception.

The crowd got plenty Amped Up one last time for the day when I came to the stage to introduce the “Tallest man in Country Music.”  Not only does he offer a great selection of cover tunes, but he also offers with the tales tied to their meaning, sharing his journey with fans openly. Included in the mix, as well, are his own songs. Songs, which have known some success on the Country Charts. In fact, his first hit, “This Is Me.” is being added to Sound Choice’s Karaoke Song Catalog.

Next week the New Bern based, singer-songwriter, will head to Raleigh, to be a part of the release of his song for future Karaoke stars. You can join the karaoke showcase party of Bryan Mayer’s “This is Me” hosted by Sound Choice® and your local karaoke host DJ Stephen Scott, at The Brickhouse Sports Bar & Grille! Come on out to sing some Sound Choice karaoke, listen to good music, eat some awesome food and support your local favorites. This special karaoke night, Bryan Mayer will sing the karaoke version of his song “This is Me” created by Sound Choice®. Bryan will also perform a small acoustic set. Drink specials from the bar include $3 Carolina Brew co. Drafts and $4 Hawaiian Punch shooters!

Joe Baes Project Rock BrÜtopia for 2nd Annual Halloween Bash!

The Joe Baes Project brought the good times and fun music, for the Second Annual Halloween Bash at BrUtopia last Saturday, October 27, 2018. Offering cover songs from grunge to straight up rock originals, they always sound good serving up the sounds.

2018 offered the main trio of the project, see some transition with original bass brother Mike Galloway moving away. Baes reached out to a good friend on the scene from years before Dan Taylor, to join his project. Since the spring of this year, the trio has been working hard combing through songs and making lists that feature rock, pop country, as well as the original music. The band is now fronted by namesake Joe Baes on guitar and vocals,  and Jonathon Toler back behind the kit on drums and vocals. Sometimes the project includes guest players on percussion and keys too.

Rock Stop Two

The BiPolar Express Arrives at Blackbeard’s Station on Saturday

Next up it was over the bridge in search of trolls and ghouls, we stop at Blackbeard’s Triple Play and rock with The BiPolar Express. The trio was dressed, like 80’s tennis players. Doing warmups between sets, it was the first chilly night of the season for music under the tent, and they were all sporting shorts. Rocking the packed crowd until 11:30 pm, they offered so many favorites, including a couple ACDC selections, Bon Jovi offering, Motley Crue and even Ratt to get the crowd moving. If you like 80’s hair bands you should make it a point to enjoy this band at a venue near you.

It is rare but the band is offthis weekend, but you can keep up to speed with their events by liking their band page on Facebook:

While on the subject of these two local trios, I will take a minute to mention that their next gigs will be on the same stage. Both trios will be rocking for the relief of our homeless veterans. In time for Veteran’s Day Weekend, this is the Third Annual Concert put on By Robert Hurff of RCS and Peace Soldier. Helping area veterans has been his mission for years and a few years back he organized this concert to amp up his contributions.

On the bill, this year are four local bands and one regional act that will Shoot to Thrill you. You can buy your tickets in town at Mitchell’s Hardware on Craven St. or at Fullers Music on Trent Rd. or buy your ticket at the gate. Come out and jam with local family band Strung Together, rockers Joe Baes Project, the BiPolar Express, Peace Soldier and regional rockers, Shoot To Thrill, the all-female ACDC tribute act. That is a fine ticket of entertainment for a great cause. For more information on the show check out  the Peace Soldier Website today:

Halloween Creeps In, The Beat Goes Down and The Music Plays On

Last night I stayed local and caught a couple early shows!

Thirsty Bruin Hosts Local Singer & Stringer Ed Prophet

Last night the weather offered more rain which put a damper on some events about town, but what I did manage to catch I thoroughly enjoyed! My first stop brought me to The Thirsty Bruin, 224 Middle St., New Bern, where I enjoyed the sounds of local song maker Ed Prophet. The talented stringer and singer keeps busy on the road offering music to fans along the Crystal Coast. I had just missed Ed last weekend at the Cape Carteret Fall Festival, so seeing him last night was long overdue. He offered two fine sets to friends that gathered at the Thirsty Bruin last night. Tonight the singer will be entertaining at The Church Street Deli and Pub, located at 99 W Church St., Swansboro, NC. Music is offered from 7-10 pm. To keep up with this singer please find him on ReverbNation by clicking his name:

Carolina Sky Delights Bike Riders and Offers Bluegrass and More

There was a fundraiser in full swing last night when I stopped at The Brown Pelican and Carolina Sky was offering the fun grooves when I got there. They performed in a trio formation with Caroline Tanner, Phil Lanier, Sara Rosellen offering the sounds with all things strings. They swapped out between banjo, guitars, mandolins, and violin. The beautiful thing about this band is their uniqueness. At press time I had no news about upcoming gigs, but when I hear the news I will share it with you first!

The Brown Pelican often teams up with local charities to combine, music, food and fundraising fun. Next month you can join the cause for the cause with Lily Fest, brought to us by GEM Productions and the good people at Bernaroo Music and Arts Festival and help support the Coastal Women’s Shelter.

Carolina Lily Fest 2018

GEM Productions is proud to announce that Carolina Lily Fest returns for its fourth year on November 17th, as New Bern’s premier outlet for the celebration of powerful women in our community. Each year, Carolina Lily Fest hosts an array of female musicians, artists, and vendors, who donate their time and efforts to raise money for the Coastal Women’s Shelter, the sole provider of no-cost comprehensive domestic violence services in Craven, Jones, and Pamlico counties. CWS is an organization that does so much to provide for our community, so let’s bear together and help raise funds for this incredible organization. This year’s event will return to The Brown Pelican for an evening full of female empowerment for a fantastic cause!

This year’s event will be headlined by the immensely talented Crystal Bright, an incredible Chapel Hill-based singer/multi-instrumentalist, who blends European and American world music influences, twisting her music into a darkly cinematic yet operatic burst of energy. Additional eastern NC based acts will be announced soon!

Carolina Lily Fest is open to any female performers/female-centric groups, poets, arts or crafts vendors who would like to participate. If you’re interested in joining us as a part of Carolina Lily Fest, send an email over to bernaroomusicfest@gmail.com

Let’s Kick the Weekend into High Gear with Music

New Bern Boasts the Blues Weekly

I have said it before and I will tell you again; the blues is alright! Knowing that we can celebrate it each week is equally as wonderful. It was announced earlier this month the Big Jim Kohler would be the regular Tuesday entertainment at City Stage New Bern, located at 901 B Pollock St., New Bern, NC.

Since the club opened, Big Jim has been a regular feature on stage., but now they have increased the volume on the blues and will be ushering in each Tuesday with two sets of fun and fine Chicago style blues with Big Jim on guitar and vocals, and his beautiful bride, Kathy Kohler on vocals, Chris Buttita on bass and Tom Parker on drums. Music from these cats starts at 7 pm and the entertainment is free.

If you have not heard Big Jim bring his blues, you are missing out on New Bern’s blazing sapphire string man. Born with many talents, he pursued music only after sports led him to injury. Here is the most recent band bio drafted by Kathy sent to me by Big Jim earlier in the week.

Meet the Band!

“Nearly 30 years into a playing career, Big Jim Kohler manages to keep it fresh every time he makes his way to the stage. He started cutting chords in clubs on Long Island and in New York City, before long he was playing festivals and alongside heroes and friends. With many stories to share and two CD’s under his belt; The Road Goes On Forever and The Party Never Ends.

On the caravan, these days are Kathy Kohler, a veteran of theater and clubs. Singing blues and gospel all while being the wife and mom to Big Jim’s brood. Chris Buttita is on bass; hailing from Chicago, Buttita also plays bass for North Carolina’s Hot Buttered Grits, a New Bern based jam band with a large and devoted fan base that love roots, funk and jamming good music. The drum stool is manned by Tom Parker from Syracuse, NY. Parker crossed Big Jim’s path out on the road, back in the day when Parker was keeping the beat with harp master Carey Bell and Kohler was swapping licks and backing the legendary bluesman Son Seals. After running into each other in Eastern Carolina it was only natural for the two to team up.

Always a good time Big Jim Kohler moves on playing intimate clubs or on larger stages with the same love for music and his audience.”

Save the Date:

44746033_927357964142052_7615372672490274816_n.jpg

For those who can’t make it out on Tuesday, be sure mark your calendar for Saturday, November 10, 2018. That is when you can take a little trip to the scenic Oriental, NC to take a pause for the cause and meet the Kohler’s, as the belt the blues to raise money for Pamlico Community College. They will perform from 4-7 pm at The New Village Brewery located on Broad Street. There will also be a silent auction, free pizza and great craft beer available at the cash bar.

Chasing Rain Clouds & Finding Festivals

Speaking of the blues, that is one thing that the sky wasn’t last Saturday as I rode around from one festival to another trying to escape the raindrops, which greeted me at all locations, until it was time to go to an indoor gig, of course.

Cape Carteret Fall Festival

Cape Carteret hosted their First Annual Fall Festival, which featured a variety of vendors, fall fun for the family and live music. The event was hosted at a town park and offering the live music. When I showed up was The Mad Fiddler, Jason Addams; and Davis Lott  offering a variety of familiar favorites, including, “Witchy Woman,” a song that fits great in the fall. Also included in the show were a variety of original songs as well.

I have been wanting to see Addams perform for some time now. Being a fan of the fiddle, I have been interested in seeing his show since first hearing about him about a year ago. I will say, it was worth the wait, Addams has mad skills on the fiddle, hence his nickname the Mad Fiddler. When I first met Lott, it was many moons ago, when he was jamming with his other band project, Big Drink Music Company. Both music projects are great fun and worth checking out. The players are professional and fun and the music is familiar and rocking!

Second Helping Does Sound Check in the Rain and Closes out the ENC Food, Brews and BBQ

Upon leaving the Crystal Coast, I headed North and West and found my way to Kinston to check out the last leg of the ENC Food, Brews and QUE Festival which took place at Pearsons Park in Downtown Kinston, NC

Offering the music for the event were several familiar local acts. Opening the day was TrainWreck, who funked up the morning. New Bern’s Country crooner, Bryan Mayer rocked the stage next. The Wicked Shimmies are a Kinston based band, that offered the third fun set of rock and cool grooves. Closing out the day was the Lenoir based tribute band Second Helping, who is nationally known as the longest-running tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Of course, I showed up just in time to hear them do the sound check in the rain. Following a brief shower, they worked out all of the kinks and the band shut down the event with the Southern Rock favorites that fans love. Though the band is local, they perform mostly out-of-state. They have one more event on the calendar that is in our area.

43237899_742036129482748_4536668281389449216_n.jpg

You can take a pause for the cause and rock with the band at Fall Ball 19, taking place on Saturday, November 10, 2018. The Fall Ball is a fundraiser to benefit Edgewood Community School. The Fundraiser will kick off with the third annual wing and pig cook-off. There will be seven bands on the bill and all the good times you would like to have. This is a BYOB event, so pack your coolers and mark your calendars. Campers, RVs, and tents are welcome. The address for the Fall Ball is 750 Racetrack Rd., La Grange NC. The event starts at 11 am and runs until 10 pm.

Adam Hill Returns to The Brown Pelican

This past year, Second Helping hit the road with another area band. The Adam Hill Band joined them on several shows this past Summer. This offered Hill an opportunity to perform on bigger stages and in new areas.

Speaking of the Adam Hill Band, they were in New Bern last weekend, so following all of the festival fun, I headed back to town. On Saturday, the band returned to the Dirty Bird, aka The Brown Pelican, 411 Broad St., New Bern, NC. It was the first time the trio played there this year. It was a fun night rocking with the Lenoir County-based rock outfit.

This weekend they will be playing a private party. In the days ahead, the band will be busy rocking some big stages. Next Friday the band will be rocking Wilmington, when they perform at Bourbon St. S Front St., Wilmington, NC. Music plays from 9 pm till 1 am.  On Saturday, November 3, they will be rocking Wish You Were Beer Tavern, Goldsboro, offering music from 9 pm till midnight. The following week they will be on the road and rocking them in Clayton on Friday, November 9 and in Raleigh on Saturday, November 10, 2018. Sharing the stage both nights with other great rocking acts. Please see details below!
