Solo Acts, A Theater Show, Plus A Little Rock n Roll Make For Good Memories

More signs of normalcy presented themselves this week, as music schedules started to fill up and we were able to enter a theater for the first time in more than a year. Let’s hope this trend continues as we rebound from the recent insanity of the Covid days.

The Back Pocket Buddha Comes to Fairfield Harbour

Brian Burke aka The Back Pocket Buddha

We really have been having some fun each Thursday evening at Harbour Pointe Bar and Grille. Not only is the food good, but the music has been outstanding too.

I have watched Brian Burke perform many times over the last six years and it’s always delightful. He is a skilled professional that is schooled in music therapy! So it makes sense that you leave refreshed and a little more healed and happy.

I recently reached out to the solo artist to do a little Q&A. I asked him for a little background on his life and music and he replied; “I began writing songs in college and have been writing ever since. I grew up in a musical home. My brother played guitar and I started playing around 15 after I stole his guitar. I went to college for music. I actually have a bachelor’s degree in music therapy. I play guitar, bass, piano, mandolin, trombone, and sing.”

NCMZ.LIVE file photo: The first time I met Burke was in downtown New Bern circa 2016.

I asked Burke about the virus of course, and how he navigated it. He said, “During COVID, I spent time writing some new songs and recording them. I am working on an album with my buddy Chuck Phillips at Edgewater Studios. My music is available on all streaming platforms (Spotify, iTunes, Soundcloud, etc.).”

I ask many players, “If you could give your younger self some advice, what would it be?” To that, Burke replied, “If I had to give my 12 year old self any advice it would be, to take more chances in life and be more assertive. Travel, see the world, meet new people, have new experiences, and write about it all.”

Nowadays the talented player is busy with starting to book for spring/summer, with some gigs in New Bern, Greenville, and the Wilmington area. So if you have room for some great talent on your calendar be sure to reach out to Burke soon. You can reach him by email at bgburke50@gmail.com. You may call or text him to at 252-341-1649. Fans and friends can keep up with him on Facebook, by liking his music page Back Pocket Buddah.

On Stage @ The Paramount

I was invited to attend a performance at The Paramount last weekend and I sure am glad I went. It’s been over a year since my last theater experience and it turned out to be a delightful way to usher in the weekend.

Mother and daughter in one of their final performances at the Paramount Theater with the StageStruck Sings Kids. Katherine, in the forefront singing will be graduating high school in a couple of months and heading off to college this Fall. Mom, Sharon will keep busy with music education and theater production in her absence.

Blog supporter and sweet friend, Ken Byrd invited me to meet his sister Sharon Caughron and niece Katherine. Mom played the piano throughout the performance and works as the music coordinator for the production program and his niece Katherine is in her senior year and shines as one of the may stars of the production team.

Last weekend was the final performances of the production from the StageStruck Kids: “Per Aspera ad Astra”.

The StageStruck Sings Kids are a talented bunch of Goldsboro high school performers, ranging from freshmen to senior and learning under the direction of their music educator.

As per the Facebook event:

The Latin phrase “per aspera ad astra” translates to “through hardships to the stars.”

“Looking back over the last year, the hardships we have all endured have seemed overwhelming. Live entertainment helps us all, even if only briefly, to escape the pains and challenges in life. We are overjoyed that a safe avenue for live musical theater has been born! Showcasing some of the best musical theatre moments of Broadway from its golden age to today. The StageStruck Sings kids are thrilled to bring back joy to their community by sharing songs about the hardships in life, the hope of overcoming those hardships, the humor and joy that can still be found amongst them and the thrill of triumph over them. The stars are within our reach!”

Once I read that it was like angels singing… a calling me to go, because all of that falls right in line with my thoughts on music and how much we need more of it to heal the world right now.”

The Paramount Theater is a beautiful venue to take in a performance. They are very careful about the times we are living in and follow all safety protocols.

They welcome you into the theater by way of a friendly greeter and offer you a refreshment 6 feet away, in the center of the lobby. We both opted for the fruit and cheese selections, but there were sweet treats on the table for the picking too. Also available were beverages, all of this at no cost to the guests. On another table they had theater merch for sale. T-shirts and Sweatshirts were on display.

It was a delightful performance that was put on by a team of talented young stars. It enlightens my spirit to report that theaters might soon open. This was another good sign of normalcy on our horizon, with curtains being drawn back and theater productions being talked about again. I feel full of hope and happiness.

Following the performance Sharon, Ken and I walked the beat a few hundred feet, before we wander into Brisas Latin Cuisine. Not only did it look interesting, but they also had a live musician in their window.

It was there that we had a wonderful dining experience and enjoyed the sounds of Matt Letch Music. This player offered the dinner sounds while the staff serves us pretty drinks with edible flowers, and delicious food. I had the Rio Verde Shrimp and was completely satisfied with the culinary explosion of flavors in my mouth.

Between conversations and courses, I made my way to the front of the restaurant to film Letch live on Facebook for a song or three. I was talking to an old friend of his in the audience who told me that Letch was playing his father’s keyboard and that he learned his love for music from his father.

When I reached out to Letch this week, I asked if there was any truth to this claim and Letch replied; “Yes my dad is a musician. I started playing drums when I was 6. I picked up the guitar, my primary instrument when I was 12.” He has been at this for so long that when asked about his first gig he confessed, “My first paid gig was a long time ago, I’m not sure exactly when it was.”

As for the virus Letch said, “With Covid it has been somewhat of a struggle, since most of the businesses I play for were forced to shut down, but I’ve stayed positive about it and things are starting to head back towards normal. So thankfully it hasn’t had too much of a negative impact on me personally.”

As for the foreseeable road ahead Letch wants fans and friends and all my readers to know, “My up-coming gigs include this Friday, March 12 at Jay’s Kitchen, Saturday, March 13 at Barrique, Friday. March 19 I am back at Brisas and Saturday, March 20 at Jay’s Kitchen again (all of those are in Goldsboro).

You can keep up to speed with this talented music maker by checking him out on Instagram at Matt Letch, find him on Facebook at Matt Letch Producer. He also has a Matt Letch YouTube Channel.

We Hang Around Town for Saturday Night Fun

Justin Castellano Back at BrÜtopia

If you are looking for a unique music experience, check out Justin Castellano. He is easy to find as he stays busy entertaining crowds along the Crystal Coast. This Saturday he will be sharing songs at Bake, Bottle and Brew from 6-9 pm.

Castellano is a fixture on our local music scene, who stands alone and apart from most. It’s not only his talents that make him a shining star, it is his heart that makes him golden. Besides being super talented and truly gifted, he is very kind and does a lot to support the scene and his fellow musicians. At the beginning of the month, Justin set up his home studio and offered an intimate concert hoping to bring attention to his ailing friend who fell ill last month. Jack Ketner, much like Castellano is a fixture on the Crystal Coast music scene.

Along my music journey Castellano has helped me a lot and introduced me to many, but Ketner was one I found on my own in the early days of ncmz.live. In fact, I think we were rolling along in The Tracey Stones Zone when I met Scearce and Ketner in the summer of 2016, on the deck at the Dockhouse in Beaufort, NC.

Scearce & Ketner with Spence in Beaufort on a Saturday night

When Jack Ketner fell ill in February his friends jumped to his aid. David Spence immediately set up a Go Fund Me Page for donations to assist Ketner, who is recovering from not only pneumonia but injuries sustained from a fall as well.

Days later Castellano set up a live stream for Jack, to bring attention to that Go Fund Me campaign. The need for Ketner to cover his bills during recovery is still a thing. So please consider lending help to our local artist and humanitarian. All of the contributions add up, every dollar counts, so leave five if you can.

Signature Blend Debuts at The Brown Pelican

Making their way to the floor of our beloved Brown Pelican, who finally opened their doors last week, we meet Signature Blend, a New Bern based band that started to rehearse as a unit in January, 2020. This quintet of seasoned music makers specialized in good ol rock n roll.

Just as they were getting ready to unleash their experience on the community, COVID took center stage and like the rest of the world Signature Blend were timed out. After one long year and many rehearsals, the band entertained all that passed through the small hometown music venue that has also been shut down for a year. They all were waiting patiently and yes, even impatiently in anticipation of nights like this.

To find out more about the band I reached out to my friend Barbara Rivenbark, the wife of one of the guitar players. Making up the rotation she says; “Jimmy Mattei bass player, Gary Mayo lead guitar, George Helms drummer, Jay Singleton singer and Chris Rivenbark lead guitar.”

She further explains; “There are two lead guitar players, as some bands have only one. Jimmy the bassist has played with big bands, one is Great White. All these guys are seasoned players.”

In telling me more about her husband she said; “Chris has been playing since he was 8 yrs old. I don’t know about the others. Not being prejudice, but they are awesome. Their blends of music are like no others.”

Now that they have made their debut, the boys are ready to rock. Barbara said; “We are playing at Rookies Sports Bar this Saturday.

That’s just down the road on highway 58 in Carteret County. Keep reading to learn more in the county by county run down.

To stay in tune with the band and keep up with their journey of rocking the region, by giving them a like on Facebook. Signature Blend

Marron Chaplin Comes Home with a Band

Rocker beauty, Marron Chaplin came home for a visit this weekend and brought the band. The trio of rockers turned it up at Tap That Craft Beer and Wine Bar last Saturday and turned their trip into a real tale to remember, as well. I will return next week to fill you in on how she met her band mates, how she survived covid and we will also look at the road ahead with this area rocker who is making her living in Nashville, TN.

Bad Decisions Band Rocked the Deck at Blackbeard’s

The Johnston County rock n country cover act Bad Decisions Band is happy to be back at it again. The band made their return to New Bern this weekend when they rocked the deck on Saturday night. They are a fun bunch that loves making music and interacting with their audience. Making the sounds come together are Clay Benson, Shane Norris, Valerie Boyette, Matt Starling, Ben Hayes and Chuck Tipt. They are all seasoned players that offer a fun show.

You can find the band on Facebook by clicking their name above, but if you wish to reach out and hire this fun and energetic outfit call (919) 524-1132.

New Bar on the Block New Bern’s Jazz It Up

Have you heard the news, we have a new Jazz themed bar in town. Jazz It Up is located near Armstrong’s Grocery Store on Broad St. They had their grand opening last Friday, and I caught wind of this on Sunday. I reached out to the venue and learned that they are a fully operational bar, but they are not offering live music as of yet. Their next scheduled event for the public is next Saturday, March 20, 2021. Food will be catered by Sea & Soul. Stop out and welcome them to the neighborhood.
