Saturday Night We Rocked and The Week Rolled with Jams and Jammers!

On the Scene with Tracey Stones

Saturday night rocked and we rolled through the week with jams and jammers. We rocked the scene in New Bern on Saturday and kept it around town throughout the week as well

Marron Chaplin Offers Popular ’80s and 90s Rock with her Baby Blue Six String

Have you met or taken some time to listen to Marron Chaplin? This beautiful young rocker chick is an awesome talent, currently calling New Bern home. She has a story I can relate to wholeheartedly, having raised my son with only the help of my family. We both share a similar “New Bern Story”, as we were both at some point in our journey was surprised by a pregnancy, and changed our lives for the sake of our kids. Instead of relying on the hope of others getting it, we leaned into our families and for that single parenting reason, we both ended up living here in New Bern.

IMG_3331 (2).JPG

Chaplin is home here bringing up an energetic toddler. A girl who shares the name of her first loved guitar, named after a dear woman that loved Chaplin her whole life, her beloved grandmother Evelyn. In between naps, the music maker works on plotting her path on the music trail. She spends her time here in New Bern playing weekend gigs. But she splits her time in three places over the year, as she works with management in Nashville and a yearning for New York in her soul.

Next up on the Schedule

Speaking of weekend gigs, this mom focused stringer will be kicking things off tomorrow afternoon at the #ENCStrong Community Celebration. You can catch Chaplin at that event, taking place at Creekside Park in James City, located on Old Airport Road. The fun community event and celebration starts at 2 pm and music starts just after 3 pm, with many local acts offering live music!

Stairwell Rocked the Deck Downtown

Stairwell on Facebook

Over in town, it was Stairwell giving up the rock grooves outside, on the deck at Blackbeard’s Triple Play Restaurant. This Greenville based rock band offers a harder edge of rock medlies. They have a great number of original songs too, which I seem to love the most.

Thing is, when you sing someone else’s material, it opens you up to constant and rather defined comparisons. When you share your own material, there is a nakedness of soul that is exposed with each new track and it leaves little room for such intricate comparisons. There might be the broader comparisons of being compared to other acts like Shinedown or Metalica, so that a new audience knows what to expect when seeking their songs.

The band currently offers two full discs of their original works at shows. They also have hats, jewelry, stickers and other merchandise, that helps support their cause of generating new music for fans. The band has a good business model and a dedicated fan base.

For anyone interested in listening before you buy it, you can simply visit the band’s website to have a listen. I believe if you are a fan of hard rock, you will be pleased with what you find here. You will also note that the band has a show coming up tomorrow night in Wilson. You can catch them rocking Brewmasters tomorrow night with music being served from 7-10 pm.

Hank Barbee Brings the Dust Parade to The City of Bears

It is always a treat for New Bern when Hank Barbee brings the Dust Parade to town, like he did last Saturday evening for their show at The Brown Pelican. He always brings a fun show and a fabulous band.

They are always working on new material for their next project which will be something they get to working on as soon as next month. The band will be heading into the studio in May to lay down some of their latest works.

Custom Made Happiness

Following the show, I took a minute to catch up with Barbee. The newlywed is in a good place these days. He is awaiting a new custom guitar which his good friend has his hands on, making for stringer now. Based in Atlanta, the craftsman is worthy of the wait. When I asked him about the new guitar here is what I learned. “My custom built guitar is a not a copy, but it’s inspired by the β€˜59 Fender Jazzmaster.” Barbee explained.

“It has what’s known as an offset body, which is sort of a softened rhombus shape. The finish is a tri-color sunburst, sort of unique to the Jazzmaster guitars. On the custom side, it has a flamed maple neck. It also has a different vibrato system than the original.”

Hank also mentioned, “I prefer Bigsby style vibratos so that’s what we went with, it’s just what I’m used to. Also, we installed Lollar pickups which are wound to exact specifications of the old Jazzmasters and truthfully are probably less noisy than those old ones.”

“We also did away with some of the ridiculous extra features in the original electronics that Fender designed, opting for a simple three-way pickup selector switch and a volume and tone knob. Simple, effective,” said Barbee.

“He makes everything from start to finish. He even engraved the neck plate with a T for Thompson guitars.”

The artist currently has a couple of discs which are available at shows and he also has other merchandise worth considering. My favorite feature of the merchandise table are the bracelets that Barbee’s mom makes with his old guitar strings. Re-purposing the waste to create art is always an awesome thing.

Upcoming Shows

For fans and friends looking for Hank Barbee and The Dust Parade, you follow them on Facebook or on the web you can check them out at The Dust Parade. Barbee plays solo gigs, in duo formation, offers a trio formation and a full band. Tonight the singer and stringer will perform solo near his home base at Moe’s BBQ, Wilmington, NC. Music starts at 6 pm and it is fun for the whole family so bring the kids. Tomorrow night Hank will be with the Dusty Trio rocking the grooves at Fishy Fishy Cafe

Big Jim Jammed on Monday but Brings the Band Back on Friday

It was another great Monday night Blues jam at the Dirty Bird with Big Jim Kohler and his boys. They have been hosting a Monday evening jam session at The Brown Pelican for three months and it gets more exciting each week, as people pour into the bar to hear the rocking sounds of Kohler leading the charge.

With Lee Tibbetts in the house, there is always the soothing sounds of a wailing harp mixed in with that sweet sounding guitar. It is always a great time to hear the professionals work things out. Speaking of which, here is a bit of good news…

The Band will return to The Brown Pelican this evening with the full band including the secret weapon, who is generally not around on the Monday evening gigs, the lovely Kathleen Kohler.

Music plays from 7-10 pm this evening. For those looking to support live music on a new level, I will remind you that Big Jim Kohler is trying to raise the money needed to lay down some new tracks in the studio. We are half way to goal and have 24 days left to help this player in his quest. To be a contributor to the project please visit his Kickstarter page at Big Jim Kickstarter.

He rocks out from 10 pm until the lights go out. Hill’s final show is slotted for Sunday, when he and his other band Victim of the Cause open the show for Buck Cherry at the Tarheel, in Jacksonville, NC.  For tickets to that show follow this link: Buckcherry w. While it’s hard to put a finger on any one sound that defines β€œAmerican music,” the compositions of Bill Toms are as close a template as any. The Pittsburgh native along with his band Hard Rain, deliver a sound that takes the greatest of America’s most beloved genres and melds them into a poetic representation of the best the country has to offer. With his ninth full-length studio release, Good For My Soul (street date October 27), Toms channels a foot-stomping, wall-shaking blend of soul, blues, gospel, and rock vibes, all brought together with his lyrical specialty β€” stories of everyday men and women doing their best to stay ahead while still managing to keep a dream or two in their heads.

Soaring horns, gritty licks, toe-tapping rhythms, and Toms’ own rough-hew vocals will draw listeners in, as well as well-deserved comparisons to the greats such as Dr. John, Little Feat, Springsteen, Joe Tex, The Blasters, Otis Redding, and Rufus Thomas.

Good For My Soul was recorded in February 2017 by Oscar-winning composer Rick Witkowski, who also co-produced the set with Will Kimbrough (Rodney Crowell, Todd Snider). Both artists have collaborated with Toms frequently on parts of his earlier catalog. Toms launched his musical career in 1987 as lead guitarist of Pittsburgh’s legendary band Joe Grushecky and The Houserockers,

As a solo artist, Toms has opened for the likes of Levon Helm, Marshall Crenshaw, Steve Forbert, and Buddy Guy. He’s plotting a string of regional east coast dates to support Good For My Soul, as well as a full European tour in 2018.
