I’m back in the zone with your live music options for the week ahead. Starting with tonight, Wednesday, June 8, 2016; if you missed the Free Concerts In Your Community last night at the Riverfront Convention Center here in New Bern, you have another chance to catch Favorite Light Classics at The Town Common in Tarboro. The show time is 7:30 and you can get tickets at http://www.ncsymphony.org/
Cuz’n Kirk’s Blues Band (photo above) will be live tonight at Whitley’s BBQ in Murfreesboro, NC. Show time for them is 7-10 pm.
Tomorrow night the duo portion of this rockin’ blues trio, better known as B&B, featuring Bon on guitar and Bob on bass (photo below) will be live at Logan’s in Roanoke Rapids starting at 8:30 pm.
Looking at their weekend agenda, you can find the trio live at The Market Street Pub in Washington, NC on Friday starting at 9 pm and on Saturday the duo will be live at Winslow’s in Greenville, NC also beginning at 9 pm.
There is an Open Mic night at The Silo’s Restaurant tonight in Oriental, NC. Owner, Chris Daniels is the host of this weekly jam and things get started at 7.
Turning our attention to Thursday, June 9, 2016, local talent, Backseat Romeo, Ed Ward (Photo below) will be live tomorrow night at Swansboro Yacht Club starting at 6 pm.
Other gigs slotted for this six string slinger include a show at Boro Cafe in Swansboro, NC on Friday, June 10 at 8 pm; Fat Turtle in North Top Sail Beach, NC beginning at 9 pm for Saturday’s office and on Sunday you can find the Backseat Romeo at Queen Anne’s Revenge in Beaufort. NC. That show starts at 3 pm.
Matt Miller and his band Wild Honey (photo below) will be live at The Saltwater Grill in Swansboro, NC tomorrow from 6:30 pm.
The duo is also slotted to appear live at Brandy Wine Bay in Morehead City, NC on Saturday, June 11, starting at 6 pm on Brandy Wine Drive.
With the start of Summer, of course we find more and more festivals and this week is no exception. In fact, I have a few options in three states for all you festival followers to consider this weekend. Turning our attention to Friday, June 10, 2016; another festival taking place this weekend and a little closer to home is the Washington Summer Festival!
This event will be kick off Friday, June 10, 2016 starting at 5 pm and going til 9 pm then all day festivities are on tap for Saturday, June 11, 2016, starting at 10 am and going until 9 pm.
Regarding the live music for this event, here is the scoop: The Embers featuring Craig Woolard will be on stage sponsored by PotashCorp-Aurora– Festival Park Stage 7pm-9pm

Since we are in Washington, I can also tell you the Steel Shot (Photo above) will be live on the Pebble Beach Stage at Backwater Jack’s in Washington. The Pamlico County Duo will be performing from 7-10 pm. This fun duo gives up great energy and a offer quite an array of music from the 50’s right through the current day. If you happen to be in town for the festival, make sure they are a part of your trip to the area.
Looking around the Crystal Coast…Jack’s Waterfront Bar in Morehead City, NC will host the Burlington, NC band Bounce. That show starts at 10 pm and goes until 2 am the following day.
Other options around the region include Machine Gun live at 10 pm at Salt Ultra Lounge. They are hosting a weekend long anniversary party that you don’t want to miss.
On the far side of the coast, there is always live music on the deck at The Dock Side Restaurant in Beaufort, NC. They don’t list their schedule nor announce their schedule so it is always a guess who might be featured on their deck.
Live at Bistro By the Sea in Morehead City it’s a two night appearance for former Kool n The Gang singer Alex Williams. Both shows start are nightly 7-10 pm.
Over in Jacksonville, it is the start of the Summer Concert Series. It gets underway this Friday with the Justin Kyle Band performing at the Riverwalk Crossing from 6-8 pm. (Event Photo Below)
While we are over that way you can catch Justin Castellano (Photo below) at the Marina Cafe starting at 8 pm on Friday night.
Castellano also has a show on Saturday at Biagio’s in Jacksonville from 7-10 pm
Looking West of State there is a metal show happening at The Gas in Winston Salem, NC. This bill offers Final Sign, Dogbone and Written In Gray. It’s an all ages show. Doors open at 8 and the first band hits at 9 pm. There is a cover charge for this show.
Shoot To Thrill will be performing live at Woody’s Sports Tavern & Grill in Cary, NC. This female rock band offers a tribute to rockers AC/DC. No cover before 8 pm.
Last show west of New Bern I have to report on is Wasteland who will be live at The Red Room in Kinston, NC starting at 10 pm and rolling into the early morning hours!
Bringing things closer to home, Bob Laverty (Photo above) will be live this Friday at The Silo’s Restaurant’s Red Rooster Bar in Oriental, NC. That show is 7-10 pm
They always have live music on Friday nights at Gary’s Down East Seafood Restaurant in Arapahoe, NC from 7-10 pm. No word on who will be performing this week yet. The establishment usually posts an announcement on Friday afternoon. Best way to keep informed about their happenings is to check their Facebook page late in the day on Friday if you get hungry and are still looking for something to do.
Other options much closer to home for Friday is another installment of ArtCrawl in Downtown New Bern. This is a wonderful monthly event that happens during the second Friday of each month. Now in it’s tenth year, this is the night all of New Bern’s creative folks collaborate and display their crafts and wares and share their talents with song and sometimes you can even catch people as they dance.
This time around you can find Big Jim and his bride Kathleen Kohler (Photo below) over on Middle Street out in front of The Black Cat Shoppe from 5:30-8:00 pm
Also down the road, on Middle Street be sure to stop by Sweet Peas Cafe. Gabrielle Christie (Photo below) is the host of this open mic event every other Friday and you can hear her this week starting about 6 pm. She welcomes all players and entertainers to come join her.
Down on Broad Street you can catch Dan Phillips and Alan Gleeson (Photo below) from 5-8 at the Brown Pelican.
Later that night you can catch local talent James Ford (Photo above) at the Pelican from 8-11 pm.
Over at the Thirsty Bruin, down on Middle Street, you can stop in and hear the soothing sounds of Paid Time Off, Rick and Jenna Leigh Huff. (Photo above) The Father/Daughter duo get things rocking at 8 and play until 10:30 pm.
Live on Front Street, Wick Wickline (Photo below) is live at BTM’s from 6-9 pm.
The final show to tell you about in town this Friday is Casablanca who will be at City Laundry. This wonderful new place is located on Pollock Street and will have its grand opening next week, but in the meantime their doors will open for this fun night. Check them out for ArtCrawl as they feature the work of two area artists and then offer the sounds of a trio of talented players. The show is from 8-11 pm.
Having a look around the region on Saturday, June 11, 2016; It’s a Family Affair over at Southland Ballroom on West Street in Raleigh. Doors open at 7 pm and you can brace yourself for the rocking sounds of Sidewinder.
Further west, you can check out an event brought to us by S.W.E.T. at The Somewhere Else Tavern in Greensboro NC. Out there you can catch Thundering Herd, Broad River Nightmare, Origin of Disease and Grody Jones. Those who are ready to rock can find Lacuna Coil live at the Lincoln Theater in Raleigh, NC. Doors open at 8 for this event. Helping them out on this bill will be Switched Up Heart, 9 Electric and Painted Wives.
NC boys the FIFTH will be heading to Outlaws Bar & Grill in Petersburg, VA for a show that starts at 9 pm. Also on that bill is Prone To Rage.
My rocking friends out of Raleigh, Thunderstruck NC (Photo above) are a part of the third festival I wanted to tell you about. They are slotted for two shows at Celebrate Fairfax which is taking place this weekend in Fairfax, VA and here are the details, as listed on their event page: Thunderstruck will be on Saturday on the COX Rocks Stage and playing immediately after the B-52’s. On Sunday June 12, Thunderstruck will play at 3:30 right before Living Colour.
For anyone headed to VA for the weekend, this is a great option for food and fun times. Check out their website at www.celebratefairfax.com.

Driver X has a show at Locked & Loaded in Garner, NC. That show takes place from 9:30 pm- 1:30 am
Travis Moss will be acoustic and live at Jay’s in Goldsboro, NC. His show starts at 6:30 pm
At the Red Room in Kinston, NC on Saturday night you can check out the sounds of the Roman Sams. They get rocking at 10 pm and play until 2 am.
Looking toward the coast, local country entertainer, Bryan Mayer (Photo below) will be live at the Ocracoke Oyster Company in Ocracoke, NC. His show starts at 3 pm.
The Retro Band is featured on the bill at Jack’s Waterfront Bar in Morehead City, NC. That show gets started at 10. Get ready for some high energy, dancing good times!
Jim Quick & The Coastline are featured at Salt Ultra Lounge for the second night of celebrations for the fairly new club. Located in Emerald Isle, it is the hot spot in town. The fun starts here at 9 pm. Go early and stay late! To keep up with all the events and happenings, like them on FB.
Looking to the north you can hear Something More live at Player’s Retreat in Greenville, NC. That show is slotted for 7 pm.
Backwater Jack’s in Washington, NC (Photos below) offers great food and good vibes and this Saturday the sounds of High Cotton. That show is 7-10 pm.
Looking around New Bern, don’t forget, there is live music every Saturday afternoon on the deck at The Double Tree from 2:30-5:30; this week you can catch the sounds of Little Cecil
Not long after that gig wraps up you can head over to the Trent River Coffee House on Craven Street and catch out-of-towners; Rob van Sante and Janie Meneely (Photo below) . He is a fantastic guitarist, from the Netherlands originally. That show starts at 7 pm.
Later in the evening you can head across town and catch one of my favorite blues players, Big Jim Kohler (Photo above)and his wife Kathleen Kohler who will bring their blues to the Mesh Sports Lounge on Trent Road. That show is 10:30 pm-1:30 am
There are a couple of shows happening this Sunday, June 12, 2016.
Steel County Express will be live at JJ’s Country Store located in Stokes, NC. That show is slotted for 2 pm.
The Myth will be live at 3 pm. They have a show at The Rusted Bucket Tavern in Burlington, NC
Live on the Deck at the Double Tree in New Bern be sure to catch Joe Distefano’s Swing Band from 5-9 pm.
Monday evenings in town, Persimmons features a deck party from 5-9 pm and they offer live music each week throughout the Summer season. I stopped in last week to have a listen to Merchants Road. (Photo Below)
On Tuesdays you can bring your talents to Triple Play Restaurant where Big Jim hosts an open jam each week. That gets under way at 8 and goes until the talent quits. Stop down and check out all the players around here.
