Nanne Kalma and Ankie van der Meer from the Netherlands will perform in New Bern on Friday, July 22.

Performing with voice, guitar, mandolin, and concertina, Nanne and Ankie will present a wide variety of folk and maritime music.

Nanne & Ankie have been playing together since 1980.

At first in groups like Kat yn ‘t Seil, Kajto and Liereliet – since the end of last century as a duo. Singing in Frisian, Dutch, Esperanto and in English, they produced nearly 40 albums on LP and CD and they regularly tour in many countries in Europe and also North America and Australia.

They sing traditional as well as newly written songs and have a wide repertoire. They like to sing about different subjects.

Maritime and historical themes play an important role, but they also sing about humorous events from daily life.

At festivals, concerts, on ships or in singing workshops, Nanne & Ankie’s program is always witty and adapted to the situation wherever they are.

They accompany themselves on several instruments such as guitar, mandolin, concertina and shawm. In the first 15 years of the 21st century they already released 18 new CD’s in several languages.

Nanne and Ankie will perform at Trent River Coffee Company, 208 Craven St., New Bern, on Friday, July 22.

Further west there is another pause for the cause to tell you about. This one is in Greensboro down on the Doodad Farm, located at 4701 Land Road, Greensboro, NC.

It’s been five years since a bunch of friends got together to build a stage on an old tobacco barn, and now look at us! To celebrate we’ve invited back the band that blew us away at our very first show in 2011 — Graymatter! We’re also having a potluck dinner and inviting some of our songwriting friends to play in a big songwriter showcase.

Entry, as always, is FREE, because we want everyone to come out regardless of their ability to pay. We usually collect donations for the band, but in this case Graymatter has offered to pass those donations on to our friend and Doodad volunteer, Jill Hunter, to help her with some ongoing medical expenses. We love you, Jill!

If you want to contribute to Jill’s GoFundMe site:https://www.gofundme.com/2cqdk2k

The last time I covered a gig with this player on the bill was in August 1996, at Manny’s Car Wash, in upper Manhattan when he was slapping sticks for Todd Wolfe.

Please bring headshot (selfie or snapshot acceptable) and resume.

Songs by character (see below)

Cold Read – use the character breakdown below to select role(s) for which you’d like to be considered.

For additional information and song samples – http://www.mtishows.com/next-to-normalhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-0ldE2Ubcs

ABOUT THE PLAY: Family struggles with the impact of mental illness. Believe it, or not, this is a musical dramedy. It is one of very few musicals to win the Pulitzer Prize.
