With four separate plots and four sets of characters, A Midsummer Night’s Dream was written in a highly creative period in Shakespeare’s career. This play’s unifying themes are marriage with love, appearance versus truth and order versus disorder. A Midsummer Night’s Dream shows us that real love is much more than mere physical attraction.

Also showing in town at the RiverTowne Players located at 514 Hancock St., New Bern it is the final two performances of Working. This is a wonderful musical that hits home for everyone. It has a great cast and I know the director, John Van Dyke worked hard with his crew to bring this work to our town so go enjoy it while you can.

Getting back to the live music around town here is what you can find this Friday, August 5, 2016:

Buck Loy will be rocking The Brown Pelican located at 411 Broad St, New Bern, NC from 8-11 pm.

For those feeling inspired to play, but don’t have a gig, grab your gear and head over to Sweet Peas Cafe, located at  323 Middle St, New Bern, NC where Gabrielle Christie welcomes all players to the stage to play from 6-8 pm.

Also on Middle Street, be sure to stop in and share some love with Bruce Lynch who will be performing live at The Thirsty Bruin located at 224 Middle St. His show is 8- 10:30 pm and if you have not caught him live, you have not yet been rocked.

Just over the bridge in James City it is going to be a big night over at Triple Play Restaurant located at 111 Williamson Rd, New Bern. First you can enjoy the blues while you nosh on the daily food specials being served up by this friendly staff. Big Jim & Kathy Kohler will be on stage from 6-9 pm. Following their performance, it will finally be time for the Bi-Polar Express to pull into the station.

I am not sure if you recall, but a  few months ago I stopped by bass player and vocals,  Wick Wickline’s house to have a listen to this newly formed project under a reincarnated name. This session features Josh Overby on guitar and vocals who told me during the rehearsal that “The crowd can expect to hear all things rock when we take the stage.” On drums, completing the lineup and rhythm section all in one shot is Mike Lancaster.

All players hail from New Bern and are familiar to the local music scene. It should be a fun night watching these boys pick up fans on their new rock n roll train. They will hit at 9:30 and rock ya til the end of the night.

Well I will return in just a bit with your option for Saturday and Sunday. Until then I hope you get out tonight and enjoy the dance. But hey, if you are in a bar, don’t be like me…keep your shoes on so you don’t have to walk around with glass in your foot for three days. That interrupts the dance when you have mindless moments like that.

Life is too short for mindless moments so keep those limited and be kind to everyone you meet. Tip your servers and bar tenders as they help to make your days better and please remember FREE music is never FREE, so please tip the players that help you dance through the dark days and celebrate  the fun times.

Please know that if you have a band or gig, a venue or a live music event you are welcome in my zone. Feel free to send me your upcoming events. You can find me on Facebook and you can email me at

Thanks for reading. Please share this with your friends, so they can dance too!
