Over at Crossbones Tavern located at 114 E 5th St., Greenville you can enjoy the rocking sounds of Bencoolen. I learned quite a bit about the band by reading the event page shared below. Tonight they start the party at 10 pm and rock you til 1:30 am.

Bencoolen has been described as “maximalist rock” (The Rival) in which “the horn, the vocals, the backing instruments, all combine forces to create a burst of energy that screams..” (Independent Artist Buzz).
The band is touring in support of their recently released single, “Spotlight” which has already been featured in a Paste Magazine column and with Live Music Daily. The recording was built on a live room recording at Inner Ear studio in Virginia with legendary engineer Don Zientara. Don has recorded for a wide range of artists from the Foo Fighters to Fugazi.
Bencoolen ramped up their touring starting in 2016 with stops across the East between New York and South Carolina, at famous venues like 9:30 Club in DC, the Southern in Charlottesville, and at smaller gigs like at university fraternity parties. Bencoolen has worked to directly support Big Something, The Marcus King Band, the Mowgli’s, and Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band in the last year.

Just across the street tonight at The Cru Bar & Wine Store / Beaufort Coffee Shop located at 120 Turner St., Beaufort, NC  offers the sounds of Gumbo Lily tonight from 8-11 pm. This show is free and it will warm your soul to hear this talented unit offer their selections of folk flavored country picking sounds. You’re invited to come early for the best seats and awesome appetizers.

To learn more I visited the band’s Facebook page and here is what I learned:

Our name comes from the gumbo lily, also called “butte primrose,” which grows in the bare clay buttes, arroyos, and claypans of the western badlands and grasslands. We, however, enjoy the sand and salt air of Coastal North Carolina.
Gumbo Lily is a wildflower of the west growing in the gumbo (clay dirt) of South Dakota and other western states. Pegie saw a street sign in the middle of the prairie in South Dakota called “Gumbo Lily Lane” and thought that would be a great name for a band. Rebecca and Pegie started singing together in 2010. They met Bobby at a jam and for some reason he agreed to play with them. Then he talked Rex into joining. What luck!

The band is:

Pegie Douglas-vocals, guitar, spoons. Peggy, formally a member of Rusty Strings and Carolina Cowgirls, is a retired exceptional children teacher living in Morehead City, spending summers in South Dakota and playing music wherever she goes.

Bobby Chandler – banjo, dobro, guitar, vocals. Our not-so-secret weapon from Cherry Point, Bobby has been playing in bands since he was 16 years old. He is originally from Chocowinity but now resides in Newport.

Rex Hawkins – is a New Bern NC native and has been on a musical oddessy for 50+ years. Having played in bands of many different types and styles of music, Rex’s musical influences are wide. If you listen to his bass lines you’ll find a mix of those influences. He started out playing drums, picked up Bass, Guitar, Keyboards, Sax and most recently Ukulele. According to Rex, “Playing with Gumbo Lilly has given me a chance to improve my standup bass abilities, and what a great group of friends they have become.” It’s a pleasure to have him in the band!

Rebecca Marks – vocals, guitar, kazoo (if we would let her). Rebecca is living her dream at Atlantic Beach.

This is the band’s 4th year together. They have played at the NC Seafood Festival, Backstreet Pub, Clawson’s Restaruaut, Floyds 1921 Restaurant and Catering, Hannah’s Haus, Harrika’s Brew Haus, Senor Dick’s Warehouse, Cru Wine Bar, Trent River Coffee Company, Union Alley Coffeehouse, Core Sound Waterfowl Museum, Beaufort Historical Association, Blu Sail Art Gallery, the Friends of Fort Macon, Crystal Coast Earth Day Celebration, MulletFest, MumFest, Havelock Chilli Cook Off, Carolina Home and Garden, Gloucester Mardi Gras and the Trinity Center for the Road Scholar Program.

Tonight at the Icehouse Waterfront Restaurant located at 103 W Moore St., Swansboro, NC offer the sounds of my talented and sweet friend Justin Castellano who will be live in the bar tonight from 9 pm til 12 am. He always gives up a great show with a variety of familiar songs that he delivers in his own unique fashion. He is always a treat. Stop out tonight for a late dinner at the bar! The food is awesome, staff is attentive and Castellano is talented and groovy!
