Tracey’s Weekend Runaround
On Friday September 16, 2016, I waited for friends to gather at Triple Play Restaurant, located at 111 Williams Rd., New Bern. While waiting, I enjoyed the sounds of Rick Huff working out many familiar rock favorites including Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.
Looking ahead, Huff will be on the deck at Sunset Italian Grill located at 100 Marina Dr., in Fairfield Harbour this Friday, September 23, 2016 and coming up this Saturday, he will be joined with the band Paid Time Off. This week’s rotation will include daughter Jenna Leigh Huff and guitarist Tod Stilley. This gathering will be a charity event at The Brown Pelican located at 411 Broad St., New Bern, NC. The night will raise money for The Merci Clinic, which opened their doors to the community where The Brown Pelican now dwells, 20 years ago. There will be a trio of talented players out in support of this event and I hope you can make it too. The night kicks off at 8 pm.
After the gang was all together we loaded into the Magic Music Bus and headed up the road to Backwater Jack’s Tiki Bar & Grill located at 1052 E Main Street Washington, NC. It is there that we noshed on some amazing entrees and enjoyed the sounds of Gen-X live on the Pebble Beach Stage. This band is full tilt 90’s and more current day rock band. They are a four piece ensemble with half the players calling Washington home and the other two coming out of Greenville. They play around the regional area in between and are a lot of fun. You can find them on Facebook and back on the Pebble Beach Stage this Saturday, September 24, 2016 from 7-10 pm.
Backwater Jack’s is a family friendly restaurant that offers kicking live music outside on the stage until the end of the year. When we were there people were dancing and having a fine time. They just recently updated their music calendar with a Facebook post and here is what I learned:
The music lineup for the rest of Sept. into Oct. is fabulous: Lipbone Sept. 23 / GenX Sept. 24. Washington’s own Chuck Phillips with CAPS and special guests Wayne & Wes on the 30th. We start Oct. with Amy Hockaday-Stevenson on the 1st. The following weekend Cuzin’ Kirk’s Blues Band on Friday and a repeat performance of Diedra Ruff on the 8th. John “Singer” Benson and The Corey Stewart Experience on the 14th & 15th. Stay tuned for more dates ’cause Pebble Beach ROCKS!
On Saturday, September 17, 2016 I saw a trio of great bands. First up, I headed out to Persimmons Restaurant located at 100 Pollock St., New Bern where they hosted their end of season BBQ on the deck. They featured two bands on the bill and I was there in time to catch Adrian & Co giving up some awesome soul and soothing rock sounds. These guys are such talented players. When not working in full formation as Train Wreck, these boys head out and entertain folks in different formations under the tag of Adrian & Co.
In the very near future, as in Friday, September 23, 2016 you can catch the full band at Jack’s Waterfront Bar from 10 pm til 2 am rocking the deck with their funk and soul filled show. JWB is located on the waterfront in Morehead City, NC.
Next stop on the trail was The Adam Hill Band with special guest, Donna Storey. This band just does something to me. They are a small band, just four members but mightier than most. And to tell their story accurately one must include the tale of two bands. The Adam Hill Band is actually a trio that includes string bending and fret filing, Adam Hill on guitar and vocals, Kevin James behind the kit and Gordy George on bass and vocals. Then there is the four piece rock cover band Solid Ground which offers Wayne Terrible on drums and powerhouse vocalist Donna Storey as well as George on bass and Hill on guitar. When Terrible can’t make the gig the four piece bills as Adam Hill Band with Special Guest, Donna Storey as they were billed on Saturday, September 17, 2016 for the show at BrÜtopia located at 1201 Highway 70 East, New Bern, NC.
Throwing the spotlight on namesake and guitar man, Hill; I find myself curious each time I have the pleasure to hear and watch him play. Thing is, you just don’t see that caliber of playing everyday. In fact, he is the best I have seen in these parts. He has many originals that can rock you just like any familiar well known classic. If you have the opportunity to catch this guy, he is worth the travel and time to make it to a show. Backed by any of the above formations, there is a powerful presence of serious talent. The next gig on the agenda is Solid Ground live from 8pm -12 am this coming Saturday, September 24, 2016 at VFW, New Bern located on Butler Rd, New Bern
Just to give you a sample of originality and talent; here is The Adam Hill Band with Change, a rocking original by Hill :
The final show I took in on Saturday was Built For Comfort live at The Red Room located at 220 N Heritage St, Kinston, NC. I love this four piece rockin’ blues band who do things just a little bit different and that is definitely my attraction here. Being a fan of the blues, their music is familiar and comforting to my soul. They reach me right down to my toes and it is impossible not to swing and groove to that fun sound of celebratory music.
Calling Greenville home base, this line up features Landy Spain on guitar and vocals; Joe Tronto keeping the back beat on drums, Bill Hunneke, harmonica and vocals, and newest edition Rex Gass on bass and vocals. Their sets offer fun classics like Mustang Sally done in an original way and Thrill is Gone by the King of the Blues BB King. I am quick to become a fan of any band that offer selections by blues groove master Jimmy Reed and guitar great Buddy Guy.
The band have no events pending but you can keep up with all of their news and events by liking them on Facebook! BUILT for COMFORT on Facebook
Shining a light on The Red Room, this is a converted warehouse with comfortable couches lining the walls and a big bar with a friendly staff and lots of IPA’s great drink specials great stage for the live music they support and a nice front patio and back door smoking lounge. This was not my first time in the house, but it was the first time I took full advantage of their big dance floor. If you have not been there yet, take a gander out highway 70 and check out this room that supports live music every Friday and Saturday with some of the areas hottest bands taking the stage at 10 pm for an affordable music charge upon admission.
