Today’s installment of the North Carolina Music Zone is dedicated to Stevie Ray Vaughan. As many of you know, I am a die hard SRV fan. When he was ripped from our lives 26 years ago today; a part of my soul went to rest with him on the side of that mountain in East Troy, WI.
I miss him every day and enjoy his music still. His loss was by far the most devastating music loss of my personal life. Having been blessed in this life, I saw him seven times and touched his hand for a brief second as he saved me from ejection from his concert in NYC.
One of my favorite memories of his many performances was at a General Admission show at the Pier at the South Street Seaport. It was 1985! I was very young and impressionable. I was a nearly a sophomore in high school. Living dangerously, I crossed the line on my friend’s shoulders in the hopes of maybe getting a pick from him, but instead he reached out toward me, brushed my hand and used his to wave away the police officers that were coming for us. We moved back on the other side of the barricade and he moved back to stage center and offered another tune. Two songs later his brother Jimmie Lee came out to the stage and played a double guitar with his baby brother. I won’t soon forget how much that man’s music reached me. He is still very alive in my heart every day!
