Feel Good Friday~
Welcome to the weekend folks! Before I take you around the region and run down all of the live music found choices from here to there; I want to tell you about an event that transpired last week here in New Bern, NC. Barn Bash a fund raising event for Promise Place went down for the third year at the Batten’s Farm on Old Airport Road on Saturday, September 10, 2016.
For the first time in the three year history of the event there was no rain, but plenty of emotions poured down during the auction portion of the event. Promise Place is a non profit Sexual Assault Resource Center serving Craven, Jones and Pamlico Counties. They help victims and their families face the trauma caused by rape and sexual abuse. They offer advocacy, therapy and offer community outreach.
This annual event is a fun night for the non profit to raise awareness and much needed funds for their mission. The food is prepared by Len Reason, Jr and crew and the appetizers that are served are prepared by three of the kindest “Ladies of the Y” you will ever meet. Wine, beer and tea were served along with the bbq and fixings. Merchant’s Road provided two fine sets of music accompaniment as the ground gathered.
After they ate, the live auction began. There were several other stations with silent auction items and four special ticketed raffles that were given away. The crossbow that I sold chances for raised nearly $900 and the black powder gun brought in over $600. The Grillman Grill was given away to one lucky winner and that raffle brought in about $900. Another run raffle item that went up for grabs was a KFC bucket full of scratch off lottery tickets.
By the time the moon was up and the stars were shining our community raised more than $63,000.00 for Promise Place to use as funds for their commitment to their cause. They stay fully staffed through out the year and they serve three counties. Their important work is never done. If you missed the opportunity to give to them during their Barn Bash campaign, I want to remind you that you can donate your time and monetary contributions to them throughout the year. Send checks, gift cards to WalMart or Staples to the office at 1401 Park Place New Bern, NC 28562. You can also help them when shopping on line through Amazon Smiles and pick Promise Place as your charity, you can even leave them in your will if you really care to make n impact on changing the rape culture we live in today!
I just want to extend a big thank you to the Battens, the Reason Family, the major sponsors, the staff and board of director of Promise Place and all the other contributors that made this night a huge success. What happened on Saturday at the Barn will not stay at the Barn it will be the night that makes a big impression on many lives in the year ahead. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for giving victims a place to become victorious after the trauma of rape!

A down-on-his-luck playwirght’s student tells him he has written the perfect suspense play and will bring it to the playwright’s Connecticut home tonight. The suspense over whether the playwright will kill the student and take credit for his play forms the crux of Ira Levin’s thriller. Deathtrap is “Two-thirds a thriller and one-third a devilishly clever comedy”.
Looking at other stops around town, Bruce Lynch is live tonight at The Brown Pelican located at 411 Broad St, New Bern, NC. He will be laying down his grooves from 7-10 pm. He plays a variety of classic and modern rock and a few blues tunes too!
An original folk-rock Americana trio best described as a high energy Peter, Paul & Mary, or a co-ed Crosby, Stills & Nash, with a bit of the Byrds and a tad of Joni. Their 3-part harmonies….. Wow! With engaging, movingly meaningful originals and deep roots in ‘60’s and 70’s folk and folk-rock, the group is fast building buzz as an energetic, engaging harmonic head-turner.
