Tracey Stones meets Bobby Ray in Zebulon, NC and life is somehow suddenly better! Life is short, even if you are lucky to  live 85 years and more, it is short, make sure you dance!

On the Scene with Tracey Stones

I caught quite a bit of live music this week. I rolled around town, made my way to Greenville and then closed out the week last night in a small dot on the map, somewhere in the middle of nowhere. While the rest of the world ran to the box office to watch Star Wars, I headed west and landed in Zebulon and found out how amazingly blessed my life is, and how music keeps me grateful.

I started my music adventures this week on Wednesday, when I stopped out to enjoy the talents that came to play at the weekly open mic, held at LaRosa’s Italian Restaurant. Located at 1503  Glenburnie Rd., New Bern, NC. That event is hosted by Bearfoot Monty’s founding member and writing force on guitar and vocal, Justin Hargett not shown above.

It was an incredibly inspiring night of music with Fairlight Moriah starting things off, with an original acapella song about her home and life in Colorado.

Following her performance, Aaron Davenport took to the guitar and offer a simple set of fantastic songs. Cover songs and original ones blended in the mix and a display of soul and inspiring music which continued with more girl power and the skill and grace of Marron Chaplin. She opened her set with an amazing introduction by way of “Sympathy for the Devil”. Following a couple of solo numbers, Heather Bunn joined her and the two offered great impromptu jam of classic rock songs by Bon Jovi and other 80’s rockers.

While they performed, I spoke with our mutual friend Tom Spellman and asked if he would consider having the girl duo at his show on the patio at Harvey Mansion. He agreed with the idea and said it would be done. So be sure to mark the calendar for January 27, 2018 and meet us there to rock from 8-11 pm. Another treat on the night was knowing that my live video feed grabbed the attention of Mick Galloway, who jammed out and added his offerings to the fun night of music. You can catch Mick on bass with the Joe Baes Project who will be rocking in the New Year at BrÛtopia, 1201 Highway 70 East, New Bern, NC.

On Thursday I noted, that one of my favorite rockabilly bands would be in the area, so I headed to Greenville and enjoy a couple sets with the always fun Phantom Playboys. They offer a fun music experience for all that gathered at Pitt Street Brewery, located at 630 S Pitt St., Greenville, NC. The music and fun started about 8:30 and the band offered a great mix of classic songs, as well as a hearty offering of their own material available on disc, and for sale at all of their shows.

They are truly a fun act of talented players. They grab the audience from the start and keep them moving and grooving throughout the night. The five piece unit is based in Wilmington, NC and were hitting the road for a quick tour to the North. This weekend the band is rocking the citizens of Richmond, VA, spreading joy and sharing good cheer.

One of the big reasons I enjoy seeing this band around the holidays, is due to their choice of holiday songs. They bring me back to my youth with an offering from my favorite Christmas TV Special, “A Year Without A Santa Claus.” Above is the band’s take “Heat Miser.”

To keep up with this authentic rockabilly band find them on Facebook at :

To close out the week I decided to check out a new part of our beautiful state, as I headed west to Zebulon to catch up with Adam Hill. Hill had himself an exciting week with another appearance on Music Monday 96.3 FM with John Jones. His next appearance is scheduled for Monday January 29th, when Adam Hill will team up with the woman who went with me last night, the incredible Fairlight Moriah.

She joined Hill on stage for a few selections and wowed everyone that was within earshot. This girl can sing and that boy can play. It seems to me there is great work that can be done here. Both of these talents are what I would deem as “powerhouses”. So to team them up together could be magical for anyone on the audience side of the line.

I look forward to seeing where the road leads now with both of theses souls along for the journey. Though I am unsure where it will lead us, I am excited about this trip and anticipate great things for them both.

After the first set the crowd was warmed with the sound of one solo harmonica player as Bobby Ray took to the stage to serenade me with a little Wildflowers:

Before the night was over we even danced. Bobby Ray is quite a dancer and still enjoys tapping to the beats. Next time he promises to bring his tap shoes. I can’t wait!
