On the Scene with Tracey Stones

On Saturday night, I stayed around town yet again to catch a couple~few shows. That means I caught a few shows and will talk about a couple of them now. My first stop brought me to Circa 1810 Restaurant & Bar at The Harvey Mansion, 221 S Front St. Where I got to touch base with Peace Soldier, as they offer a blazing night of classic rock standards with a bit of blues blended in to the mix. It was originally booked as an acoustic trio evening, but things changed when the whole band showed up. The band recently set out again after reforming under the direction of the original Peace Soldier, Bobby Hurff.

Joining Hurff on stage for this tour, we meet Eddie Oswalt- harmonica and vocals; James Olson- lead guitar, James Smith- guitar, Richard Williams- bass and Bryan D on drums.

This past week the band played their final show for the 2017 calendar and are getting ready to head into the studio over the winter season to lay down some tracks on their original works. Expect much more from these guys in the months ahead.

The other show I caught in town on Saturday night was that of The Oblations, brought to us by GEM Productions. The duo performed at The Brown Pelican from 8-11 pm and they offered a great show of inspiring jams, that held my attention throughout. In fact, I even purchased their CD. I will talk more about that in another installment after further listening. Here is more from the band’s Facebook band page:

The Oblations are a one of a kind two-man Blues/Funk band, by Joe MacPhail (drums and keys simultaneously, vocals) and Daniel Fields (guitar, vocals). The resulting sound is that of a three or four piece, as Joe imitates a rhythm section, or plays a piano and bass part while keeping time with his feet. Fields is multifaceted, with a mastery of both finger-style and slide guitar, and a host of evolving tones. There are many genres and musical ideologies at play, but the foundation of The Oblations comes from Blues music The first true American musical form and its various forms through history. Daniel and Joe tell their own stories from the thread of American music and just like in life, the same story is never told the same way twice. They cut the difference between songcraft and improvisation, with covers from Howlin’ Wolf to Outkast. You will dance and have a fun time and the deeper you listen the more you will be rewarded.
This fun duo hails from Carrboro NC and you can keep up to speed with them by checking out their website at the link below:

Wednesday’s Jams

They host Open Mic each Wednesday at Silo’s Restaurant, located at 1111 Broad Street, Oriental, NC. Music plays from 7-10 pm and all levels and players are welcome, but there is not a drum kit on site.

There is an open mic each Wednesday evening at LaRosa Italian Restaurant Bar & Lounge. This weekly event is hosted by local rocker Justin Hargett and gets started at 10 pm. All jammers are welcome to come out and take part. LaRosa’s is located at 1503 Glenburnie, Rd., New Bern, NC.

Wednesday + Jamming with friends = a great time! You don’t need to be a mathematician to figure this equation out. Add yourselves and subtract some great spirits from Cindirene’s, while we multiply our good times together. Division is not welcome. The fun starts around 7:30, because everybody has stuff to do beforehand (probably some math stuff). See you there! Cindirene’s, located at 559 3rd St, Ayden, North Carolina.

Twin Leaf Brewery
144 Coxe Ave, Asheville, NC; opens their doors for your talents from 8-10 pm. Come out and shine as you show off your best.
