Turning our attention back to MumFest 2017, there is still plenty more to say. This two and a half day event wrapped up on Sunday, October 15, 2017. Making for another full day of fun with music beats and great bands.
I made it back to town to enjoy some sweet sounding blues courtesy of John Emil, who kicked things off under the Miller Lite Beer Tent. He offered his set at noon and gave up a great show to the early crowd under the tent. To check this player out be sure to visit his website at
After a great set of blues, I set to the streets to see what else I could find and before I knew it I was hearing live music again. This time it was James Ford jamming solo under the tent near Broad and Middle St. He gave his all to the early crowd that gathered for some shade and his sweet sounds.
Tonight James Ford will be performing with his band, Limited Engagement at The Red Room, located at 220 N Herritage St., Kinston, NC. Music starts at 10 pm and the jams go til 2 am. This trio of players boast two-thirds of Big Jim Kohler’s Band, so when Kohler fell ill, I secured his booked gigs for LE to play under the agreement that Kohler would be paid for the job. Tonight is the first of two dates at this venue for this cause.
On the patio at Circa 1810 Bar & Restaurant at The Harvey Mansion, 221 S Front St., New Bern, NC, there is a special MumFest Brunch, with New Bern based trio, Casablanca. The talented three piece offered a great afternoon set of old world music and jazz standards to keep people swinging to their groove. The band features Simon Spalding on guitar violin and other strings, Tom Spellman on acoustic guitar and Glenn Druhot on drums, bongos and percussion.
Since I brought up the subject, let’s turn our focus to the master of strings, world music and rockin’ good times. Simon Spalding stays very busy with many projects. Just in a week’s time I have seen him with his jazz ensemble, Casablanca, paired up as a duo with Tracey Brenneman last night, performing at Trent River Coffee Company on Craven St.
Last night was a rather incredible display of talent and grace, as Brenneman offered the audience her new song inspired by the #metoo movement spawned this week. This one moved me to tears. This is very personal for me, and to hear her add the touches of love and grace to such a dark subject offers me even more hope that these clouds of secrecy that blanket sexual assault are lifting and soon conversation, education and change will take hold so that there will be #NOMORE #METOO in the years ahead!
Turning our attention back to Spalding, today he will be jamming at The Havelock Chili Festival taking place this weekend, with his band The Bears. They kick off their oldies set at about 1:30 pm and will rock’em til they dance! Following that show, Spalding will load his gear and head to the crystal coast for an evening solo performance at Cru Bar & Wine Store ~ Beaufort Coffee Shop; 120 Turner St., Beaufort, NC. Music for that free show starts at 8 pm and Spalding promises to take you around the world in 80 tunes and with many instruments.
Just a quick recap of a few benefits going on today to help heal those in our community battling cancer.
This morning our area bikers join forces and roll out from Harley Davidson of New Bern, Highway 70 East, New Bern, NC, for the 9th Annual Breast Cancer Ride. Right about the time this article publishes, riders will be returning to Harley Davidson of New Bern after a scenic ride and enjoy lunch, free prizes, free lunch and a great band to rock you into your late afternoon. Music by the Adam Hill Band will welcome the bikers back and rock them til 3:30 pm.
The Adam Hill Band will also be performing this evening on the patio at The Harvey Mansion, located at 221 S Front St., New Bern, NC. The great people at Circa 1810 Bar & Restaurant have agreed to also collect funds, to be added to the day’s total for the 9th Annual Breast Cancer Ride. Music for this part of the program will start at 8 pm and conclude at 11 pm. Please come out to one of the two events featuring this rocking band offering up their best for a great cause!
Another rocking event that shines a light on the heart of musicians is that of Lynwood Stock, which is taking place at The DoubleTree tonight from 6pm til 11pm. This event will be held in the ballroom at the hotel on S. Front Street and will feature three hot area bands, coming together to raise money for a local family doing their own battle with cancer.
Besides working hard on stage with two rock bands, Josh Overby works hard daily at our local hospital. One of his friends and co-workers there was recently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer after just having a child. To help the family cope with the overwhelming costs, Overby approached his close friends and band mates about putting together a concert.
This event will offer tickets at the door and the cost for the event is $25. The full ticketed price will be donated to the family in need. On the bill for your rocking pleasure are Take Two, who will open the show at 7 pm, followed by…. all aboard for all things rock with The BiPolar Express. Closing out the night with great selections of classic rock, will be the music of 3 Day Weekend.
