NCMZ.LIVE ~ NC’s Best Source for Live Music Options and Local Band News

~ On the Scene with Tracey Stones ~

I stayed about town this weekend. My first stop was just over the bridge in James City where I dropped by BrÜtopia, located at 1201 Highway 70 W., New Bern. On tap for entertainment this weekend was a jazz outfit on active duty with our US Marine Corps.  It was a fun night of local beer and local food truck and great local jazz music. God Bless our talented troops.

The Havelock based band includes members Chris Schott on trombone,  John Larson on piano, Dan Webber on bass and Mark Gulotta behind the kit. The band known as The Hot House Quartet comes to town when they can. To keep up with their live performances check out their Facebook page at

Upon arriving to town I stopped and check things out at The Harvey Mansion, 221 South Front Street, New Bern, NC, where Paid Time Off featuring Rick Huff and Tod Stilley were laying down the grooves we all knew. While hanging out on the patio I sat with owner of The Brown Pelican,Heather Haiss. It was great to run into this woman and catch up on things. I mentioned to her before leaving that I would be dropping by her place as well.

Next on the journey however and before heading to the Dirty Bird, I headed to The City Laundry, located at 901 Pollock St, New Bern, NC, because I knew they had a double bill of entertainment lined up for Friday night.

Opening things up to usher fans into the weekend was New Bern rockers Bearfoot Monty, who offered a great set of rocking original music. They have been working together for about a year and are ready to introduce the world to their new drummer Dallas Allen, by showing him off on a new recording soon. The band is currently selling T-Shirts and stickers and collecting tips, all in an effort to head to the studio to capture the track for us to enjoy always and anytime.

While they changed out bands at The City Laundry, I took a moment to run around to see what else was going on. I stopped by The Brown Pelican to see who was giving up the grooves over at 411 Broad Street, New Bern. That is where I had an opportunity to hear Paul Brion who was in town from Maryland. This performer offered many rock and reggae offerings with a pretty sounding guitar.

Before heading back to The City Laundry, I stopped by The Flame, 2301 Neuse Blvd., New Bern, NC, where Joe Brown & The Band were performing a traditional end of Summer Party called The White Party, and just like a bunch of rebels these fine folks dressed to the nines in their finest white outfits, enjoyed the good food and great music and cash bar all night long.

For fans and friends that missed this good time, be sure to mark your calendars as Joe Brown and the Band will be on the patio at the Harvey Mansion for MumFest, on Saturday, October 14, 2017. The performance will start at 8 pm and offer the good grooves til 11 pm.

Closing out the night, with our good friends at GEM Productions, who bring us Bernaroo Music & Arts Festival each Summer and great music treats throughout the year. I headed back The City Laundry where I was introduced to Ellis Dyson & The Shambles. What a great band from Chapel Hill. It felt like they packed up the bus with all that New Orleans music might offer and brought right to New Bern. They are a fun modern day ragtime band that offers a great mix of original music. They have a couple of Cd’s and shirts available and you can learn more about them by staying up to date with the band and checking out their music for purchase on their website:

For the Love of Music

Before returning home on Friday night I received a message from guitar man and friend of mine Joe Baes. He wanted me to know that his band, The Joe Baes Project have a gig coming up on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at BrÜtopia, 1201 Highway 70 East, New Bern, NC. He wanted to know about the Jammin’ for Jim Campaign.

I explained to Joe that since Jim has decided not to go to rehab, I decided to stop the fundraiser, as the idea behind it was to help provide for his family while he was in the hospital and away at rehab. Since his release from the hospital, Jim Kohler is feeling better each day and continues to stay sober and on the mend, which is wonderful news.

With that Baes asked about collecting tips for the Goff Family. Lynwood Goff is the good friend of BiPolar Express and 3 Day Weekend guitarist, Josh Overby. He is battling cancer and several local bands are gathering in October at The DoubleTree to raise money for the family.

In anticipation for the big fundraising event, Joe Baes offered to collect tips for our next family in need. Therefore, we are now Jammin’ for the Goff Family and any area band who would like to help this local family in their darkest hour. Please contact me and we will arrange to promote and provide the details for our community to get involved.
