One of the things I delight in is helping bands. Last week I sat down with The Feral Cats and we discussed having me represent them in the music arena. They are a fairly new band on the scene, but they are made up of seasoned and skilled players who joined together for fun and before long started looking at the journey ahead.
What started out as a trio friends including Kimberly Kornegay who holds down most of the vocals from her seat behind the kit, Greg Howard on bass and offering some vocal assistance throughout the night and Scott Carlisle, who is known for his guitar offerings. The trio was having fun making music at home and ventured into a new endeavor after they were well received at a holiday party at the end of last year. From there they decided to check out their chops in a public setting, by attending a local open mic event at North Street Pub and Eatery in the town they call home, Kinston, NC. That is where they honed their show skills and added a new dimension of sound with the addition of guitarist Sam Zouari, who also adds his own vocals to the mix.
Looking ahead, the band has two dates in the month ahead including a gig a the place I look forward to talking about next. On July 7, 2017, the Feral Cats will bring their rock n blues funk flavor to Off The Hook, located at 105 S 7th St., Morehead City. They will be live on the deck for your rocking pleasure from 9:30 pm til 1:30 am. Be sure to come early for the great food and stay late for the great grooves!
Last weekend my friends piled into the music bus and headed to the coast of NC, where we stopped for the night at Off the Hook. Located at 105 S 7th St., Morehead City, NC, the bar/restaurant offers live music each Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They offer the freshest catch and a flavorful flair.
Owner Charlie Weatherby sat down with me last week and explained that he opened the place a year and a half ago and sees many expansion plans in the next year and a half to come. Weatherby was a fun person to interview. He comes with a many tales about a long baseball career which ended after 13 years while he was playing overseas in Japan. It started just out of college, when he was drafted and it went non stop pretty much til he was injured.
Having weathered the many storms of life, Weatherby combated the odds and rebuilt a life with new purpose, now that he has a precious daughter to raise. You can find him at the entry way quite often greeting his guests with his precious cargo wrapped tenderly in his arms. His mother also assists in greeting and seating guests.
He returned knowing he would have to heal and rebuild his life from the ground up again and started by going to work, managing Time Out in Newport, NC. That lasted quite a while until he dove head long into his dreams and aspirations owning and operating his own club.
I came to know Weatherby when our mutually talented friend Davy Williamson called to see if I could help find a band. Of course I tried a couple times, then on June 24, 2017 I delivered, with an opportunity to bring The BiPolar Express to his attention and it turned out to be a fun and wonderful night of great, rockin, music!
This band offers full tilt rockin’ energy all night long. They are fun, dynamic and offer different set lists from most party bands playing the circuit. Based out of New Bern the project unites three rocking friends, who enjoy getting together for the fun of it and rocking hard. It started simple enough with drummer Mike Lancaster and guitarist Josh Overby heading over to bass man Wick Wickline’s house to rock out a few hours and before long the BiPolar Express was picking up passengers and fans to rock and make memories. Tonight you can find them close to home and rocking tonight at Triple Play located at 111 Williams Road, New Bern, NC. Music starts tonight at 9 pm and you will not be disappointed in that aspect of the night, if you end up there!
As for the venue they rocked last week, I’d have to say I would highly recommend you check it out, should you find yourself in the Morehead City area. If you like Caribbean flavors and the salt air, you will really enjoy everything about this place. Overall, I walked away thinking the venue offers good food at a fair price. The wait staff was very pleasant and the bartender rocked all night long as well! The thing that makes them stand alone is their mix of flavorings, paired with their fresh catches and their Sunday Brunch, which features a Bloody Mary bar for your hangover remedy.
Most nights, the live music is featured out on the deck, unfortunately due to severe weather alerts last Saturday the band played inside, but they rocked them all the same! You can find Medicated Sunfish live tonight from 9:30 pm – 1:30 am.
Looking at the rest of the weekend, tomorrow night you can get your reggae fix with the sounds of Selah Dub, live on the deck Saturday night 9:30 pm til 1:30 am. On Sunday check out the jam band that we all love getting groovy with Mac n Juice, who I recently caught up with in New Bern, NC.
Weatherby charges a $5.00 music charge at the door, but as you can see the entertainment he brings is well worth the charge for admission. Of course, there is always the options of arriving early like my friends and I, and staying all night for the rocking good times!
Looking around for music events, as I tried to to figure out a way to share my passion for live music and the written word, has turned out to be the most productive decision of my life since the day I walked away from music in late 2005. So to promote my vacuum instead of guitars. Isn’t it just like life to be a cycle?
I did so, to raise my son with routine and structure. He was starting kindergarten and I moved home to where I was raised in NJ and by the first grade we all relocated to North Carolina. It takes a village! Checking in today I am proud to say it was a decision worth making . Though my soul craved days of old, my son walking across the stage with honors three weeks ago, makes me very glad I made all of those tough decisions and followed my heart; which was him, thru and thru!
As we started preparing him for his final year in high school, I began thinking of ways on how I could find my way back to music and writing. It has been a slow process as life is also at constant work. But as I build a new life and business for myself and try to prepare my son for his new life…I get most excited to see all the enthusiasm people have for my efforts.
As I navigate and explore these self publishing waters, I am behind the scenes building learning how to build an online vessel for promoting live music in NC and beyond. My road in music is extensive and well traveled. I have met many music friends from my roots in NJ to friends that I have met along the way in NY, NJ PA, DE, MD, NC, SC, GA, FL, MS, LA and TX, where my heart rests and beyond.
Music is a road map easily followed. I have been known to travel for full days to hear great live music at the end of the journey! It is always worth the trip when music is like therapy to your soul. There is just something about music that lifts spirits and helps ease the mind. It lightens the heart of worry and burden, and lifts the conscious mind. Music truly is my prescription for getting through hard times and my drug of choice for feeling intoxicated. I always lose control of myself and dance! It is awesome! I always wake up feeling better after taking in good live music.
After so many years locked down in the dull drums of routine, I broke free and found out that there was a lovely and lively music scene right here in NC. I also noted quickly there was no main source for it. I came from a big metropolitan area where publication after publication would tell you who was playing where. There is none of that here. No Aquarian Weekly on newsstands, in fact, are there any newsstands around here? No! Not a one, not that I know of here in big little small town, New Bern!
Sure we have daily publications, that offer some entertainment feeds, but it is only more recently that our local paper is offering a more lively feed on the talent around here. Part of that is due to writing this blog and shining the light on the matter. When you make a buzz about a scene the news crew follows, unless they are slack. In our town we find Charlie Hall is not slack, but rather a music appreciator and admirer and is proud to help promote music in Craven, Pamlico and Jones County and even beyond. Just reach out to him and send him an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Along the way I have also met many bands and several club owners as well. It has all been a wonderful experience, as I try to draw more attention to the lighter side of life. There is enough muck and mire to navigate in this world. I try to navigate through by tuning into the groove and getting carried away!
I enjoy it so much, I working daily at making it a complete business venture. With the creation of this blog and Tracey Stones Productions, LLC, I am slowly developing new life work for myself and work partner Robert Walker.
In this new endeavor I provide promotional services which give you the tools to brand your band and venue while promoting it effectively. I offer written band bios, photography, interviews, digital epk’s, live music streaming via my Facebook page to get word out that your gig is underway. I also help clubs with booking their entertainment and publishing their events. In doing that I also promote the club via my social media outlets and provided them with tools to do it on their sites as well.
As an example, here is the calendar I recently put together for The Harvey Mansion in town. Along with booking most of the acts, I have been working with the venue to promote the acts also.
This weekend marks the first weekend in July, which also means Croaker Festival for those who are familiar with the down east festival schedule. Kicking things off at The Red Rooster Barm, located behind the Silo’s Restaurant, 1111 Broad Street, Oriental, NC ,we find the music of the New Bern based Gypsy Sunrise, featuring the talent and music expression of Peace Soldier creator, Robert Hurff. Music will be featured throughout the town tonight, but from 7-10 pm you can rock at the Red Rooster with this folk act.

Then Saturday at the band will be at the beautiful Hilton Doubletree Hotel Deck in New Bern, for the first time this summer! 5 pm start for that good time tomorrow!
