NCMZ.LIVE ~ NC’s Best Source for Live Music Options and Local Band News

~ On The Scene With Tracey Stones ~

Last weekend I caught some of Buck Loy’s show. He was live on the patio at The Harvey Mansion, located at 221 S Front St., New Bern, NC. He always offers an enjoyable show with familiar tunes, that keep people’s toes tapping while singing along. If you missed the talented New Bern native and his music offerings last week, you can catch him tonight at The Brown Pelican, located at 411 Broad St., New Bern, NC. He gives up the grooves from 7-10 pm

Live tonight on the patio at The Harvey Mansion you can enjoy the sounds of the Kinston based rocking blues outfit, The Feral Cats. They will keep you locked in their groove from 8-11 pm out on the patio and under the tent. Meg Wetherington will be slinging drinks and Amanda will be serving you with a smile! Come out and enjoy a nice night outdoors with music and friends!

If you have not yet met these cats and kittens, you are in for a treat with Kimberly Kornegay behind the kit and offering up many of the vocal tracks. This band specializes in rocking blues done right. On bass and offering some vocal work we have Greg Howard on lead guitar and the skills of Scott Carlisle, who is no stranger to fans of the New Bern scene. He jammed with several area bands before running the streets with these strays! On rhythm guitar we meet Sam Zouari, who is stoked about being with this band and making music memories. If you like the music of BB King, Buddy Guy, Jimmy Reed and Albert Collins this is a great pick for tonight!

I caught up with Joe Brown Band last weekend at Live at The City Laundry, located at 901 Pollock St., New Bern, NC. That was where he featured his new drummer and guitar man. On guitar, offering a sweet sound with six strings, Brown introduced us to Denzel Willis. Behind the kit, we got to hear the backbeats of Nate Keys.

This local five piece outfit is thick with soul and offers funk laced grooves all night to keep hips shaking and toes tapping to the beat. Joe Brown offers the vocals and keyboards while leads the band through several jams. Playing the fat six string bass is Eric Whitehurst. Offering up the fun beats and percussions is Timothius David.  Blended together they offer a great night of music.

On Saturday I stopped by to check in with The Arlin Tart Trio, which featured on guitar and vocals is the namesake and band leader. Tart plays his signature guitar and offers a great variety of good and familiar music. He fields requests all night long and the band covers most anything the audience throws out there.  Last week Tart was joined by Miguel Delima on drums and Drew Maune on bass.

In the weeks ahead there will be some personnel changes in the band line up as duty calls and education awaits the current bass man, Muane. Along with that Tart is looking to expand by adding additional players. Keep it here and I will introduce you to the new players over the Summer season.

Tonight, Live at The City Laundry, it is a dress rehearsal of Madame Z, who will be taking the show on the road for a stop in Beaufort tomorrow night. If you have yet to see John Van Dyke as Madame Z, tonight is the night. Here is what you can expect:

“Come and dance the night away with us! Featuring a fierce selection of dance music, hourly entertainment with Madame Z and her Divas, Fresh new menu items from the Kitchen at Live, and Introducing Full Bar Service!  $7.00 Cover is payable at the door.”

L@TCL is offering up some great original rock on Saturday June 24th with The Dick Richards with Nu Clear Twins. Local Indie group The Dick Richards are a rocking original outfit based right here in New Bern and feature the talents of Parker Millar, Jake Ross and Justin Tinkler.

Opening the night is a new band on me, Nu Clear. That is always fun, checking out the new sounds. If you’d like to stop out to see the City Laundry while the house is rocking, then Saturday is the night. The show starts at 9 pm and there is a $5.00 cover.

It’s been about a year since I first met Cuz’n Kirk’s Blues Band at Backwater Jack’s Tiki Bar n Grill, located on Main St in lil Washington. They were kicking it on the Pebble Beach stage with rockin’ blues done right. Last week I got to check in with the guitar man and singer for that trio Bon Lozaga and bassist Bill Askew. The duo work an acoustic act that is just as gritty and guitar filled as they come. The talented pair will be joined by their drummer Kirk Mizelle when they play on the patio at the Harvey Mansion this coming August.

Mark the date as they will be in town August 19 to rock your blues away! If you can’t hold out that long and you are up for a road trip, you can find the band just down the road from where we met. They have a gig tomorrow night at Market Street Pub, located on Market St., Washington, NC. Music will be starting at 9:30 pm and the trio will be kicking it til 1:30 am.

There is a new, fun party band that made their debut last week at The Brown Pelican. Fronted by James Ford, this four piece band features many local groovers, including Ford on guitar and vox, Fred Scungio on drums, Sean Canary offering vocals with acoustic works and Billy Mobley on bass. Limited Engagement started to gel, practice and working out set lists back at the turn of the year. On Saturday the band made their debut at The Brown Pelican and offered a great variety of fun grooves to keep hips shaking and toes tapping. The band is currently booking more dates and I will share them as they come available.

For those looking for Ford, you can find him jamming tonight over at Triple Play Restaurant with Big Jim Kohler Blues Band. When he is not entertaining crowds on his own or with his band, he stays busy working with Big Jim as his solid bass man. Tonight the band plays in James City from 7 pm for dinner til late! If you can’t make that show, you can chill with James this Sunday evening, during the dinner hour with friends on the patio at The Harvey Mansion, located at 221 S Front St., New Bern, NC. That is where he will be giving up his acoustic offerings from 5-8 pm.

When I headed out-of-town last weekend, it was to catch up with The Adam Hill Band. I tracked them down in Jacksonville, where they rocked the Brown Derby Pub. Since I had last seen them, much has happened with the band.

First and foremost, they went off to Winston–Salem earlier this month and won a Battle of the Bands competition. While speaking to Gordy George, bassman for the band, he said, “It was kind of crazy. We drove four hours, played three songs and won $500.00.” We both laughed and I said “All gigs ought to be like that one, huh?” The other perk to winning the competition is the band will get to headline the Annual Camel City Bike Fest in September. Riders mark the calendars for the weekend of September 9 and come rock as the Adam Hill Band headlines the event. This event draws thousands of fans each year, I can’t wait til they become a fan of Hill and his band too!

The other great excitement happening with this outfit is, Gordy Gorge has been endorsed by Moniker and his new custom bass which he helped design has made its way to the stage in the past month.

In the days ahead the band will be breaking ground in new territory. First you can catch them tonight at County Line Bar & Grill,  located on 903 N in Ayden, NC. Tonight owner Ed Daughtry will be offering a free meal at 8 pm and live music with Adam and band at 10 pm for a $5.00 music charge.

Tomorrow the band will be performing live on stage at the area’s premier concert venue, Maynard’s located on Highway 55 East in Seven Springs, NC. That show starts at 10 pm as well and the cost is $15 to rock. Pack a cooler and call your friends, as you spend the weekend rocking with one of the area’s hottest guitar players on the scene today!
