The Music Business 101

When you set out to build a band or open a bar you should become familiar with all of the local media resources in your area. I know we hear a lot of bad stuff about media these days, but this is not political mojo, this is business building, community gathering mojo. Always find clever ways to highlight this so that, right out the gate, you have a cutting edge in your approach.

When putting together an event, make a list of all of these media outlets in your immediate area and be sure to contact them. Be professional if you wish to get their attention. Offer an official press release that describes your event, and it’s purpose. You don’t want to be too wordy, and you should highlight the facts. This list includes: Day, Time, Ticket Price, Who is playing and what to look forward to when people attend. Include links for other media outlets to post as well.

This should be sent to the local radio, television, newspapers and other local town publications that offer good sources for advertising potential. Your media list should include contact name, media affiliation, direct phone number for the person and an email address.

After 48 hours follow up with your media contact to ensure they received your transmission. Building a good rapport with your local media groups will help you broadcast your name and event, on a grander scale than if you rely social media alone.

Social media is a great tool and should be used for its potential benefits. But building a relationship with your local media will help you build a following faster than with social media alone.  Take the time to build and develop this contact list so to successfully showcase your event.
