Picking things up where I ended last week, we found Core Sound rocking the beats at The Brown Pelican!
I closed things out last weekend with Core Sound who was rocking The Brown Pelican last Saturday night. This trio of rocker features Cecil Gillikin- guitar and vocals; Wayne Lawrence drums and vocals who, by the way, not only plays a standard kit but on Saturday he used the electronic drums and Stephen Hamilton on bass and vocals.
The band plays lots of popular classic rock numbers to keep the crowd grooving on the dance floor. The band has no current events listed on their Facebook page, but you can keep up with them by liking their page, Core Sound Music.
Big Jim had a busy week rocking the beats with different drummers. On Monday at The Brown Pelican, we enjoyed the raps and taps of Matt Holman. Then on Wednesday at the City Stage, Tanner Bright from Caffeinated Soul Boogie offered the beats and on Friday he asked Mike Ferrara to fill in for the weekend.
Last night I caught the band laying down their blues inside of the garage doors, at The Garage located on Highway 70 E . Each beat maker added a different flavor to the mix. Tonight the beats roll on with Big Jim on guitar and vocals, Kathy Kohler on vocals, Chris Buttitta on bass and Mike Ferrara on drums at JM’s Place PUB. Music starts at 9 pm. You can also catch Jim every Monday at the Brown Pelican from 7-9 pm and again on Wednesday at City Stage with jams running there from 7-9 pm as well.
Upon leaving New Bern we rolled to the beach to check in with the funky bluegrass that offers a refreshing new-grass sound of Into The Fog, who hosted a gig at Cru Bar and Wine Store/Beaufort Coffee Shop. This trio of stringers has great fun on the stage, sharing music traditions that are much older than their years on earth combined. They offer everything from standard country songs made famous by Willie Nelson, old-time bluegrass offerings and even mix in some classic rock like Pink Floyd. The best selections, however, are their own songs. This band came together in Wilmington and now make their home base in Raleigh, while staying busy sharing music around the state and beyond.
For those wondering what new-grass music is all about, here is a sample of what you can expect from these three stringers. Band Members include Brian Stephenson on guitar, Wrightsville Beach banjo and vocals, Winston Mitchell on mandolin, dobro, vocals, and Derek Lane bass and vocals. This trio of talented fun players will be sharing their grooves at The Palm Room in Wrightsville Beach tonight. Music starts at 10 pm. Tomorrow the guys will be in Surf City at Salty Turtle Beer Company for Sunday Funday at 4 pm. For music fans looking for new music to buy, you can check out their debut release by checking out their website:

The Beauty Operators are Durham’s all-female blues rock party band. Wear your dancin’ shoes (or boots! Wigs and tutus optional.)
Decency lost a bet with the devil on the night the Beauty Operators were born. They are: Leslie Land with her corruptly indecent vocals and grimy bass- Sandee Washington blowing rudely obscene harp – Maria Linck pushing a depraved rhythm on guitar – Lori Baron doing some heavy, shameless banging – And Darby Odom growling guitar lead so filthy it’s illegal. If playing the blues is a sin they all going to hell.
