Monday Thru Friday We Groove

On The Scene with Tracey Stones

Big Jim Jams a Trio of Gigs this Week

Big Jim Kohler was busy with jams and jives this week. Our local bluesman was found around town with his guitar in hand three times last week.

Blues at the Brown Pelican

While I am busy teaching people about blogging on Monday nights at Pamlico Community College, my best blues buddy, Big Jim is holding class on the carpet at The Brown Pelican. Music plays from 7-9 pm and the jam starts after the first set. Feel free to come out and join the fun this week or any Monday night. We have really been having a natural ball! This fun weekly offering kicked off in February and had brought some of the best Monday nights this town has ever seen!

Mid Week City Stage Blues

If the midweek blues grab you, just make a break for it and join us at The City Stage New Bern, where Big Jim Kohler Blues Band does it again, each week 7-9 pm. Offering the good blues and sharing the grooves, this is always a fun way to bust up the work week, with great music and fun. The City Stage also serves food and are committed to offering live entertainment most nights of the week.

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

ArtWalk Offerings

The final place I found Big Jim sharing the blues was last night at ArtWalk. Sitting on his stool outside the Black Cat Shoppe, he was poised and ready as anyone could be, to entertain the town during the monthly town event! “Banging on that guitar for over 30 years,”  Big Jim has crawled back from a near-death experience not quite two years ago,  has remained sober and is getting healthier and stronger every day. Currently seeking funds for a new CD, I would ask you to consider investing some money here, as a music supporter. To support Big Jim Kohler and his next recording by visit Big Jim on Kickstarter.

Next week Big Jim Kohler has another trio of gigs. He will be seen jamming at the Brown Pelican on Monday 7-9 pm, offering his blues to the Grand Opening of The Garage, 1209 Highway 70 in James City on Friday; and on Saturday you can find him at BrUtopia live from 7-10 pm. Big Jim Returns to the City Stage for his Wednesday engagement, on Wednesday, March 20, 2019.

While I was rocking my blues away,  I let this gypsy woman, Jelisa, give me some advice. It was a great time last night for ArtWalk at The BCS with Big Jim jamming, local artist Amber Gibson, showing her pieces, and tarot reader Jelisa offering free, three card readings.  If you are looking for a fun shop to browse and shop; stop by The Black Cat Shoppe.

Mad Fiddler Offers Dinner Show Downtown

IMG_9707 (2).JPG

Captain Ratty’s Seafood & Steakhouse is the latest to add live music to the menu. You can enjoy dinner and live music each Thursday evening, from 6-9 pm in the piano bar on the second floor of the iconic downtown restaurant.

IMG_9771 (2).JPG

One of the things I rather like about this new feature is, the fact that we are seeing acts that are not often found around town. On Thursday we were treated to the talents of Jason Addams. Known best as The Mad Fiddler, this player offers lots of familiar songs with a unique spin on every song he offers. He hails from the Crystal Coast region and spent some time jamming with Big Drink Music Company until he moved out on his own. He started offering solo shows and DJ services a few years ago. In the latter parts of 2016, his solo project began focusing on awareness of the dying arts in the public schools.

IMG_9762.JPG

Addams says on his site, “Currently, my passion for music and playing the violin continues, as my services now include DJ private events, plan the music for weddings and DJ. Also slideshow and power-point presentations, teaching music and violin lessons, and gig locally with local talent in the area.” Father to a toddler, this Mad Fiddler keeps busy teaching lessons to and sharing songs at gigs around the region. Find him on Facebook and visit his website by clicking on the link highlighted above.

Serenades by Alisa Mike are Always Sweet

IMG_9781 (2).JPG

Thursdays are always special at City Stage New Bern with the incredible Alisa Mike in control of the room and the microphone. She needs nothing more than an iPad and a microphone to take people places. She can take you to Kansas City or share the St. Louis Blues. If you’ve yet to meet the amazing vocalist we boast as our own, be sure to make a date for some Thursday night soon.

IMG_9819.JPG

Don’t forget, if you love what you hear, you can take her good works home with you. Mike has her first disc available at shows for purchase. You can make plans for next Thursday and buy your copy. Music is offered each week from 7-9 pm.

Open Mic Night with Brian Mac

IMG_9826

The Brown Pelican hosts the longest running open mic found around town in New Bern, NC. This night is always interesting and brings a plethora of talent, that displays their goods on the carpet at The Dirty Bird. Sign up starts at 7 pm and the music starts at 8, with a few songs offered by your host Brian Mac.

IMG_9846

While I was in the house this week, I enjoyed the jams of Tom Davis, Charlie Duzan, and Brian Mac. Each guest is allowed to share three to four songs, depending on how busy the night is. Many times the talented guests end up leaving the room with a new date to play at The Brown Pelican.

IMG_9889

Before calling it a night myself, I got to hear Howard Mathew offer a few songs as well. This guy is one of my favorite street musicians. Quite often found sharing songs in the alley of Bear Plaza or down on Middle St., Mathews is a talented stringer and singer. It is always a pleasure to hear him share songs!

A Friday Night of Favorites

Justin & Friends Serve the Sounds at BrUtopia

IMG_9944 (2).JPG

Justin Castellano had an engagement at BrUtopia last night. He is always in tune and primed when it comes to sharing songs with his fans and friends. Castellano has a new recording and so much happening in his little corner of the world. The singer and stringer keeps busy rocking the grooves around the state, teaching his audience online often and writing new songs.  Tonight he has a gig at The Treehouse Beer Company in Cedar Point. Located at 911 Cedar Point Blvd., Castellano offers the grooves from 7-10 pm.

Brown Pelican Brings William Seymour

img_3070

Speaking of unique talents, last night I ran into William Seymour whom I just met two weeks ago, while bouncing around Washington, NC. This fun and talented singer is worth checking out. From Greenville, the singer and stringer recently recorded the project of a lifetime. Calling on all his talented friends so to lay down tracks on his new disc. The player has a lot to look forward to this year.

IMG_9921.JPG

If you live in and around New Bern and you missed Seymour last night, while he was picking and playing, be sure to see him tonight. He is scheduled to share songs at BrUtopia tonight from 7-10 pm. The singer-songwriter does not get to town often so take advantage of this time we have with him.

Adam Hill Band Brings It to City Stage!

IMG_0011 (2).JPG

The Adam Hill Band never disappoints! This rocking trio was in town last night, to offer an exceptional night of great music on stage at City Stage. Offering a great mix of classic covers from country to pop, classic rock and the blues, their best offering comes with their original samplings. Things went so well last night the club owners look forward to having them back soon. Keep coming back for details.

Always a crowd favorite The Adam Hill Band always makes new fans with each gig they play a show. These rockers have a new line up being featured this year, with Phillip Alcock on the bass, joining the band in January. This is a strong and welcome addition to the lineup, as Alcock has an aggressive style of playing that pairs well with Hill’s intense style.

Adam Hill is arguably the hardest working stringer on the scene. Today the band has two gigs after rocking into the early morning hours. The first gig has them rocking at press time in Jacksonville, for the Beauty and The Beast Cruise-In Car Show. Later tonight the Hill and Co will be rocking Bourbon Street on Front St in Wilmington. Music starts at 9 pm and they rock you right into Sunday!

NCMZ.LIVE Honored!

3146535-1139915.jpg

On Wednesday, March 6, 2019, my mother and I attended a luncheon hosted by The New Bern Sun Journal and CarolinaEast HealthCare Systems to honor 52 Faces of Community. Last year, local artist Laura Gammons recommended me for this honor for my offering of this blog and free music promotions service to the city of New Bern and the state of North Carolina.

img_2835

It was a wonderful awards lunch where all 52 recipients received a plaque. The publisher of the Sun Journal welcomed everyone and said a few words before a prayer was said and a wonderful lunch catered by and served byThe Flame Banquet Center.

img_2931

Following a delicious lunch and sweet treat, executive editor of the New Bern Sun Journal, Chris Segal spoke of last years honorees and named six unsung heroes.  I had the honor to serve with the last UNSUNG HERO named. Tharesa Lee is an amazing woman. I had the honor of serving with her on the board at Promise Place years ago. She is a woman of action and her word! And our community is better for having her in it!

img_2968

Before the afternoon was over Lee was awarded top honor and received the Jefferson Award. She will head to Washington DC this Summer and represent Craven County in the National Awards Ceremony! Congratulations Tharesa! And thank you for all you have done for our great city!
