Christoph’s On the Water brought back the Deck Party at The DoubleTree By Hilton in downtown New Bern, NC.
To kick things off they offered the audience two nights of great live music to start the season! Last week when I last left you, I made mention that The Kohlers who rocked their blues away for the opening night of the deck party’s return.
On Saturday, May 26, they did it again and this time with the music of The Carolina Swamp Dogs. A rugged and talented blues trio out of Jacksonville, that not only covers the blues with authentic tones and riffs, but they give an education about the players and the songs as well. For those that missed the fun music of the Carolina Swamp Dogs, you can catch them when they return to New Bern next week to rock the patio at Circa 1810 Bar at the Harvey Mansion. They will be there on Saturday, June 9, 2018, 8-11 pm.
In all, it was a beautiful weekend of music on the deck to welcome in the music season. In all, there are 11 dates booked for music on The Deck at the DoubleTree. To keep up with the schedule, please like the Facebook page the latest news and dates. https://www.facebook.com/christophsonthewater/.
Coming up in June they have two hot solo acts lined up to entertain you.
When I stopped out at Circa 1810 Bar at The Harvey Mansion, I was delighted by the grooves of The Arlin Tart Trio. I appreciated any band that can throw down with some Steely Dan as a trio! They are a fun jazzy combination of blues and rock standards that we all know. The trio play around the area and as far out as Raleigh. Joining Tart on stage last Saturday night were Miguel Delima on drums and Drew Maune on bass. Come up in the near future Tart has a private event this Sunday, but next week the band will be in Holly Ridge for a performance at the and next Friday, June 8th. That’s when you can check out the band at The Cultural Center. The performance for that event starts at 7 pm.
The other show I got to catch a snippet of is that of singer and stringer Ed Prophet. The entertainer offered a supper show on the patio to fans and friends that gathered. Prophet made the rounds sitting and serenading his crowd, as they dined and or simply came to enjoy the libations and good music.
If you missed his show around town last week and you wish to hear Prophet play, he will be performing live at The Bruin Craft Beer& Wine, 224 Middle St., New Bern, NC. He will be there tonight, with music being offered from 8-10:30 pm. This show is free and we ask that you feel free to tip the players working hard for you!
Tomorrow you can catch Prophet performing at the beach when he offers his music at On The Rocks, 2604 West Fort Macon Road, Atlantic Beach, NC, (252) 773-4114. He plays there from 8-11 pm.
For anyone who might wonder what’s going on at Circa 1810 Bar at The Harvey Mansion, they offer live music four nights a week. Each Thursday they bring you Dueling Pianos from 7-10 pm. On Friday and Saturday Nights they offer live local bands from 8-11 pm and on Sunday they close out with a supper show from 5-8 pm. All shows are hosted on the patio under the moon and stars. Come out and enjoy the sounds, and dance the night away in downtown New Bern.
Saturday night May 26, 2018, marked the debut performance of The Mother Notes around town in New Bern. They are a young band based out of Lenoir County, with a professional cheerleader and coach championing their efforts. It was Kimberly Kornegay, drummer, and singer of the resting Feral Cats that called me out to meet the band. They are actually filling all of the Cats remaining dates; as the Feral Cats regroup with a new litter.
The Mother Notes are a rocking quartet with a cool and cosmic vibe. Working the notes are Rose Emran, Vocals & Bass; Jacob Emran, Keyboard; Nate Williams, Guitar; Emily Gupton, Drums. During the third set, they changed up the front line when Rose and Nate even swapped axes for a few tunes.
If you missed the debut but wish to catch them soon, the band will be appearing live at Circa 1810 Bar at The Harvey Mansion, on Friday, June 8, 2018, following ArtWalk from 8-11 pm.
Sunday, May 27, 2018, marked a first in my attempts to bring live music to a community.
Several months ago, as many already know, I had a friend who fell ill and after being admitted to the hospital, his body started to react to detoxing. He was put in a medically induced coma where I sat by his side for nearly a month and prayed for his well-being. In the time that wasn’t spent by his bedside, I dreamed of creating a beautiful and sober music community.
Today, that friend has made great strides in his recovery from illness and in his sobriety. My good friend is Big Jim Kohler. When I tell you this man helped to heal my life with music and song, it’s no lie. He inspires me and many in our community with his guitar talents.
One of the things I started in my mind, back when he fell ill, was starting a foundation that would help to build a stronger music community. Part of that mission would be to bring shows to our local neighborhoods, where we could bring a lawn chair and the whole family.
Keeping that dream alive, I teamed up with a few members of my own community out in Fairfield Harbour to offer a live concert in the park. The event featured Fairlight Moriah & The Scorpio Moon who was backed by the players of Harbour Jazz as well as a couple of players from the rock party band Limited Engagement. It was a fun afternoon of music with the band offering a jazz and show tunes set and closing it out with a standard blues set. In all the six players that made music were Margaret Rose, piano, Ann Sorocki, vocals, and Bob Dumon on Trumpet, from Harbour Jazz Band and Freddie Scungio was on drums and James Ford was playing guitar while Fairlight Moriah belted the song selection.
In all about 30 people came out to the park with a snack to enjoy along with the music. It was asked that the attendees offer a donation to the band. The event was a fun time and the community offered great feedback following the show. I look forward to offering more events to many local communities. Stay tuned for more!
