Breaking News! The management at Persimmons Restaurant is bringing more music to New Bern. Earlier this week management reached out to book Big Jim. We are pleased to say that we accommodated their request for the band to perform on Friday, August 23, 2019. During the mid-week meeting at the waterfront restaurant, hard as it might be to believe, I enthusiastically suggested that they host more live music! I believe it is an awesome spot for live music as you dine. Having said that, join us tonight on the deck for live music by Caffeinated Soul Boogie. Music is offered 6:30 -9:30 pm this evening. Caffeinated Soul Boogie offers a great mix of music that is best described as eclectic folk-rock, with a slight bit of funk-jazz Americana blues! While bouncing about town last night, I caught the band in the alley doing their thing at ArtWalk on James Reed Lane. Here is a sample of what you can expect tonight as you dine on the deck.
I met guitarist Derrick Moore and his daughter Darria Yeager in Bear Plaza during ArtWalk in the Fall of 2016. Since then, I have watched the duo grow into a quartet and become a fan favorite on the New Bern music scene. Just a few weeks ago they were grooving in the park with me out in Fairfield Harbour and just yesterday, the band agreed to be the last-minute show on the deck tonight. Having said that, I hope you join us for an impromptu night of fun, good food, and great music.
Last night was a like a blast from the past with Dan Jam Phillips on the carpet at The Brown Pelican for ArtWalk. The traveling jam always offers fun and surprises with special guests sharing fun grooves. While I was in the house, Phillips was sharing songs with his friends Scott Carlisle and Allen Gleason. This was a great way to usher in the weekend. Dan Jam will be bringing the music to Sara’s Big Apple next month, when he offers live music in the back room from 6-8 pm on Saturday, September 14, 2019.
Saltwater Gold was the entertainment on the deck last night at Blackbeard’s Triple Play Restaurant. These boys hail from the sailing town of Oriental, NC. Guitarist Chris Daniels is also a business owner in the small tourist town. Owner of the Silo’s Restaurant, he hosts live music with an open mic event each Wednesday night and acoustic acts on stage at The Red Rooster Bar on weekends. He and singer Mark Hoff have been band brothers for couple decades. They still enjoy writing songs and offering fun familiar favorites, from the classic rock era of the ’60s and ’70s, to fans that gather for their shows. Currently rounding out the rhythm section is Mike Ferrara on drums and bassist Scott Finch. They are a high energy band with a Rolling Stones influence running through the microphone! To keep up with the rocking quartet follow them on Facebook: SALTWATER GOLD
Wrapping up last nights runaround, you know Mary Shine and I have a case of the traveling jones! Having said that, it won’t surprise you to hear that we split town and headed towards the coast!
Bryan Mayer Band has a busy weekend upon them. Last night I caught the boys rocking the boaters, tourists and fans alike, from the outdoor stage at The Saltwater Grill in Swansboro, NC. The crowd was having a good time when Shine and I arrived on the scene. Mayer was wrapping up his first set when we got there and used the break to fix the string he broke during the show. The band shares original music as well as popular classics from a variety of artists, which allows the band to cover the blues, rock and country genres in one well-executed show.
Sharing stories from his time on the road, Mayer is always professional, polished and interesting as he shares many stories about the acts he covers, while he offers his take on their tunes. One of my favorites would be hearing him talk about the famed Southern Rockers from South Carolina, Marshall Tucker. I remember the first time he took the stage to join them on “Can’t You See.” I also remember how he saved that song that night! It was a stormy night and no one really thought the show would go on, but just like NC weather, SURPRISE…the show happened and so did “Can’t You See” with Bryan Mayer! Since that show on the river in 2016, he has joined them three more times to assist on the song.
For those interested in seeing this band while enjoying a day of fun…ACT NOW, the boys will be heading to Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival tonight! They will take the stage tonight at 7 PM. It seems like just yesterday, but it was at The 2017 Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival that the band asked me to introduce them: Tracey Stones Introduces Bryan Mayer at Shrimp Fest.

Checking things out around the rest of the region, I ask my Facebook followers each week where we can go to hear them play. This is what they said this week.
NCMZ.LIVE is happy to announce our new calendar feature. We now offer three calendars for music lovers to check out for live music events. With a growing commitment to building this site to be a daily vehicle for music lovers to check out, I have added the new calendars pages and widgets. These pages and calendar widgets are broken down by area, New Bern, The Crystal Coast and Around the Region.
This offers readers a resourceful tool to finding music in their area, all around the state, every day of the week. I am committing myself to the new routine of finding new gigs to list and add to the calendars daily. Committed to adding a minimum of ten a day that means adding 70 gigs a week to these calendars.
Bands and venues are welcome to invite me to their events on Facebook or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. There is no cost to be listed on occasion, but please understand just like free music is not free, this free promotional service is not free either. It costs me a great amount of time.
If you are a busy band or a thriving music venue, I want you! We can create a calendar for you and keep you in the zone! $250 a year and you can have all your events added to a personal calendar widget right here in the music zone. Advertisers will be responsible for providing the event’s content.
Beside offering calendar options, NCMZ.LIVE also can create an active link for your website, or social media pages. Which also offers some live coverage for your live music events. For five years we have been building this site together and thanks to your suggestions and my commitment it keeps getting better. THANK YOU!
I will still bring you live coverage of the music scene around us in the random fashion we have become accustomed to in these five years of reporting. Without your support since September, none of this would be possible. So a big shout out and thank you to everyone who has extended a hand, offered a tip, bought me a meal or a beer, I love you all for the love you have shared with me! And every time I think I have to quit, you really have stepped up to help me keep the beats! Together we are building an awesome product that we can be proud of as we share it with our friends.
Tonight’s blog is made possible thanks to the donation and kindness of NC Life Media, LLC
