Our #DowntownNBRocks with Benefits Featuring Live Music! Let’s get Shamrocking and see!
We get back to rocking the beats where we left off, which was taking a pause for the cause, for a local music maker. On Sunday, March 10, 2019; many in our local community came together to raise money for our beloved Janet Montero, who was recently diagnosed with an auto-immune disease that is attacking her kidneys. Montero is not eligible for a kidney replacement for several months and has a long road ahead.
Making sure she does not have to go it alone, many gathered at the Rhem Volunteer Fire Department to raise funds and have fun with our sweet friend.
There was a silent auction which lined the fire station wall, with many items up for bidding. One thing I noted while I was walking up and down the tables, aligned with goods and services for all, was that every item offered had a bid on the table. This community stopped at nothing to show love for their Mama Bear!
Besides her very own bands rocking the cause, Montero was in attendance and surrounded by family, friends, and love. Quite frankly, I am surprised her heart did not explode thanks to all of the beautiful people that gathered for her on Sunday.
Though I could not stay for the entire event due to other obligations, I was on hand for Tom’s Tunes featuring Tom and Dahlin’ who welcomed the attendees with fun songs and high spirits.
Following the opening ceremonies, Ms. Melonie Wray offered a fine performance that brought us to church. She sings with angels surrounding her, you can hear it in her tones.
Before leaving the event I caught most of Country Express’s set, which offered awesome country favorites. As I was positioning to leave, the Fairfield Harbour Chorus was gathering and assembling to offer their performance for the event.
For anyone reading this that missed the event, but would like to help our Janet in her time of need, you can contact the cause by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and inquire about making a private donation for our beloved music lady!
Following the benefit, Montero expressed her gratitude and love for the community which came out to lend her a hand last weekend. I can tell you that when I walked in my heart nearly exploded. The love in that room was awesome. There were several more act I, did not have the pleasure to enjoy. Besides the Fairfield Harbour Chorus, I missed Country Gold.

While I was saying “Class Dismissed!” on Monday night, Big Jim Kohler was welcoming jammers to the forefront. I got there just in time to see that Mondays are still a thing in New Bern. Pulling into town, in time for the final set, it was blues night at the Brown Pelican.
This is a fun time and a great way to kick your Monday Blues. So if you find yourself suffering this Monday, be sure to come down to the Dirty Bird for some good blues and great grooves. Music plays 7-9 pm each and every Monday!
On Wednesday night, I fought through the onset of a cold, which is now visiting, to attend another fine performance brought to us by the Down East FolkArts Society last Wednesday evening at the City Stage New Bern. It was Becky Warren on stage, visiting our city from Music City, Nashville, TN. Young and bursting with talent. Warren is an awesome storyteller and embellishes her stories with music.
Showcasing her second album, Undesirable on this current tour, she offered songs from both of her releases. Warren has a strong military background and shares songs that many military families can relate to.
According to Warren’s website, we learn that her first solo effort,
“War Surplus, is the gritty love story of an Iraq War vet and his girlfriend partly inspired by Warren’s own life, many asked her, ‘How the hell do you plan to follow that up?’ After the album earned her a Veterans Day feature on NPR’s All Things Considered, a regular opening slot with The Indigo Girls, and an A rating from the dean of American rock critics himself, Robert Christgau, Warren admits that even she sometimes worried she wouldn’t be able to make a second record she was as happy with.”
One thing is for certain, Warren delivers Americana Folk Rock in a special way, be sure to check out her music today.
Warren’s appearance in our area wrapped up the Winter Sessions for the 2019 Down East FolkArts Society. We are currently preparing for the Fall season where we will bring another trio of awesome acts to the area for free. Please consider joining our team by becoming a member.
On Friday, March 15, 2019, the New Bern Rotary Club presented Sham-Rockin’ 2019 at The North Carolina History Center on S Front St. It was a fun night with a full house of friends and neighbors, gathering for the good food offered by Chelsea Restaurant. It was traditional Irish fare with corned beef and cabbage, and drinks offered by Coastal Beverage. Besides the fellowship and free spirits, there was music. During the dinner service, Tom’s Tune with Tom and Dahlin’ welcomed and warmed the crowd up!
Following dinner, the crowd got to the dancing portion of the evening, with the popular sounds provided by TrainWreck! All in all it was a wonderful night, that raised money for many area non-profits including Boys and Girls Club of New Bern, Backpack Blessings, Craven County Partners In Education, and Promise Place.
Friends and fans of the band TrainWreck can find them tonight when they rock Tiebreakers Sports Bar and Grill in Greenville. Music starts at 10 pm. The grooves go til the break of a new day!
The Garage opened its doors for their soft opening on Friday, March 15, 2019. This unique place offers something for everyone. They have games of all kinds for kids and adults as well as beer and live music too.
