On The Scene With Tracey Stones

It was another fun week that got logged in the books, with music made memories, complete with good friends. Above from left to right, music appreciators Mary Spruill, Tracey Stones, and April Sunshine enjoy Blues Night at The Brown Pelican.

Rolling Thru the Week We Jam The Blues A Time Or Two

Blues at The Brown

Have you noticed that the week starts out better when you get to greet your Monday night with a serious dose of blues? My disposition on the week ahead has improved significantly since Heather Haiss, owner of The Brown Pelican took my recommendation to open the week with a blues jam.

Big Jim Kohler Blues Band hosts the night of music that kicks off at 7 pm and offers two hours of glorious, non-stop guitar action. Opening the first hour is the house band featuring the not so Big Jim on guitar and vocals, Chris Buttitta on the bass and Tom Parker sitting behind the kit. Following a fine set of Chicago style blues the floor opens to jammers.

Last week we were witness to the young marine guitar slinger John R Williams, showing off his moves and Phillip Alcock joined in on bass, with regular jammer Jonathan Peck gracing the stage as well. Closing out the night on vocals was Charlie Duzan, who took us out of the Bern and brought us to “Kansas City!” I can’t wait to see where we go this week.

Wednesday Is Worse, UnTil the Music Plays

If Stormy Monday Blues don’t do a thing for you, then make it a happy hump day by bringing your butt to the City Stage New Bern for another round a jamming blues music with Big Jim Kohler and Friends. This free blues jam is also offered from 7-9 pm and welcomes another fun bunch of players to the stage.

Last week while I was in the house I enjoyed the delightful sounds of Mrs. Big Jim, who sings beautifully to the backing band. Simon Spalding quite often offers the electric fiddle, David Sawyer joined in on harmonica and Jonathan Peck offered some guitar parts.  The fun happens again this week and this is your open invitation for you to join us.

Thursday is Seamlessly Thrilling

Nicholas William Bailey Returns to Ratty’s

The first time I met Nicholas Bailey I was quite taken by his unique offerings of seamless streaming of guitar phrases. It was early in March and not long after Captain Ratty’s Seafood & Steakhouse started hosting live music upstairs in their piano bar. That night I only stayed for a snippet of sounds, but this week I returned for the full course set, to fill up on his mastery.

I have to tell you that throughout my time in his company, with all the setting up, ordering my meal, eating and paying my tab, it was one beautiful guitar verse leading into the other, with only one stop to answer a quick question from a tipping admirer and another quick stop to ask me what I would like to hear. I was thrilled to hear him offer “Gimme Shelter” again, in my honor.

To get a better understanding of this graceful guitar players essence and skill, come enjoy a great meal at Sara’s Big Apple on Saturday, June 15 to get a taste of his talent. He will be sharing sounds from 6-8 pm.

Strung Together on Deck at Persimmons

Our local family band has had me on my toes and tapping to their beats from New Bern to Beaufort this week. It all started on the deck at Persimmons Restaurant, when the full band was together to play to the dinner crowd that gathered.

I wanted to stop in to see this fun, festive, folk-infused pop band, to have an updated picture to promote them for their appearance on Saturday’s bill at The Beaufort Music Festival. More on that show below.

Getting back to the musical family that our town has adopted, you can find them together again on stage and on the deck at Persimmons Restaurant twice next month before the family breaks for camp and gets set for college life this Summer.

Those dates are on the books for Thursdays, June 6 and 13. They offer live music to accompany dinner from 7:30-9:30 pm under the stars, beside the water. Be sure to save the dates and come out and dance!

Friday Features A Festival In Beaufort

Tan & Sober Delights

It was my goal to get to Beaufort in time to check out The Tan and Sober Gentlemen. I met my goal of getting there in time, however, I did not plan for locking my keys in the car at the start of my work night. Nonetheless, I managed to do just that, which kept me busy bopping to their new grass beats near the perimeter of my car.

But as luck would have It, I mentioned my dismay to a tan and sober gentleman who returned moments later with a long enough wire to unlock the vehicle. When he approached me originally, I was trying desperately to unlock the truck with my antenna which was not nearly long enough. Two minutes after the debacle I was stage side and remembering why I loved this band so much.

They are the epitome of a fun festival band. They never fail to get the crowd up on their feet and moving to the grooves of their Newgrass roots music. When I first met the band they were rocking a festival in New Bern a few years back, this year they brought their best blazing bluegrass to Beaufort.

℘℘℘℘

Stop Light Observations Rock The Grooves

Following a festive set of awakened bluegrass came the revival of young rockers, a band from South Carolina known as Stop Light Observations. My first observation of this band was the young energy on stage and a spirit that threatens to keep indie rock alive and well. Very original and completely rocking this band has great appeal and presence on stage.

Stop Light Observations is a popular band from the Charleston region of the Southern Carolina state! They are made up of the combination of talents courtesy of Will Blackburn on lead vocalsCubby who is the master songwriter, piano player, synth sounder, vocalist, Louis Duffie bouncing on the bass and Luke Withers on drums.

No BS Brass Headlines Friday Beaufort Music Festival

Nothing like a 13 piece brass band fronted by one mighty vocalist to leave the soul soothed! That is how the organizers left it with festival goers on Friday night when they welcomed the Richmond Va based outfit NO BS! Brass Band to close things out.

They really are a fun and funky band that can cover the classic rockers as good as the pop artists we loved in the ’80s. Before closing things out on Friday night, they had everyone on their feet and moving to their groove. Be sure to visit them on Facebook and follow their website: http://www.nobsbrass.com

Saturday’s Sweet Treats

Back In Beaufort… Qualian Opens the Day

The Raleigh based Qualian is a five-piece, indie/alternative band formed by students and friends that have played together since childhood. In their last five years together they have released two EP’s. The energetic rockers opened day two of the 31st Annual Beaufort Music Festival.

At the helm of this project, we met Walker Renfrow the lead vocalist. Supporting his vocals are Aidan Kelly on bass and guitar, Lee Sullivan offering guitar,  keys, and saxophone. Baylor Wordsworth plays guitar and bass and Gray Renfrow sits behind the kit.

I found it refreshing to see so many talented youths take to the stage over the weekend. It rejoices my spirit every time I get to hear new blood make fun music

New Bern Treasures Found @ Coastal Music Festival

Strung Together and Their Adopted Son Danny

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Then next came New Bern’s first offering with the family band Strung Together. They started things off with George Oliver opening things up with the public adoption of their good friend Danny Batten, who filled in on guitar for their middle child Abigail Oliver. Following the quick and informal adoption, the band got busy sharing popular songs done with their unique twist of talent and style!

Included in there set were many familiar and popular tunes as well as some classics made famous by the amazing team of Carter and Cash. The band actually offered a show for the At The Gallery Series this winter, featuring the music of Carter Cash. The event was so successful the Oliver’s have decided to offer it our town again.

This time it will serve as a fundraiser for The New Bern Civic Theater. The event will take place on stage at the theater it will help support on Saturday, June 7, 2019, and for more info follow this link:  The Cash & Carter Tribute Show. Before that, the band will return to Beaufort for a show next Saturday at The Beaufort Farmer’s Market. Music plays from 10 am – 12 pm.

Followed by a Serving of Hot Buttered Grits

The next serving of New Bern based talent came courtesy of our friendly Jam Band The Hot Buttered Grits. This band has been a music staple to the delight of fans for nearly 15 years. They have a great time coming together for the sake of sharing music and that is evident in the sounds they share.

In the heat of the day, this five-piece groove group gave the crowd blistering original beats to keep them grooving in the sunshine of their love! It was a fun and awesome display of New Bern grooves for the Crystal Coast to enjoy!

Bringing It Back to the Bern ~ And Bridge To Breakdown

DeadHeadz MC Host Anniversary Party

img_7397-1

The Dead Headz MC hosted their Anniversary Party last evening and on the bill for entertainment was one of NC’s best rock bands in the Downeast region, Bridge to Breakdown. The MC has a clubhouse located in New Bern and yesterday all were welcome to rock!

The rock quartet comes together on the combined energies of Talyn Detmers fronting the effort with a Morrison flavor, swapping leads with
Malcolm Matthews. Both players offer crushing guitar leads and searing vocals, Taylor Cefalo keeps it tight behind the kit on drums and newest to the line-up on bass is Ethan Goecke.

They are badass rockers who get the job done right every time. This was about my sixth time seeing them and I am sure they get better with each live show. Here is an original snippet offered last night under the tent!

Before leaving, I learned from my editor the band was to be hired by a few other bike clubs that attended the function. If you are in need of an original, fun and rocking band for your next party be sure to consider Bridge to Breakdown. They will not disappoint!

Roaming Around Town for the Final Four

Caffeinated Soul Boogie at BrÜtopia

I was looking forward to hearing Caffeinated Soul Boogie last night, as I knew they were swapping chops with a new bass player. The band recently welcomed Daniel Baker to the line-up and last night was his debut with the band.

The band came together as a result of the father, Derrick Moore on guitar and his daughter Daria Yeager vocals, showing up at coffee houses and open mic nights. The duo grew into a full-fledged band with time and now they are a force to be reckoned with. They just get better with each performance and Yeager’s vocals more captivating and blissful. Filling out the sound on drums is rhythm man Tanner Bright, who has been keeping time here for more than a year.

Last night the band offered an impressive performance for fans and friends that gathered at BrÜtopia in James City.

Anyone interested in keeping the beats with this fun and talented band should check out their website. That is where you can find all of the latest news and their show schedule.

Joe Baes Project Rocks The Garage

Another local band that never disappoints is The Joe Baes Project. They were rocking the crowd that gathered last night in the back of The Garage. This new venue has been making improvements to the establishment since opening its doors a few months ago. Last week they started the work of building a stage and this week the mission was complete… Joe Baes and the boys rocked it!

Last night it was the common core trio on stage and entertaining their lively and enthusiastic crowd. Besides offering great music the band is also known for keeping the crowd involved with games and other good times.

Before long the boys will be heading to the Crystal Coast. Their next show is slated for June 1, 2019, when they take things to The Trading Post: Southern Food and Spirits. That will be an early show, with music being offered from 6-9 pm. To keep up to date with this band find them on Facebook: The Joe Baes Project.

℘℘℘℘

Chuck Phillips Brings His Ba…

It was rumored the solo acoustic slinger Chuck Phillips was coming to town with his full band, but when I got town I found Phillips banging out riffs on his six-string to the back-beat of the bass offered by Sonny Fields.

It seems things went astray for the drummer that was expected to make the show. Something about too much weekend. Not letting small details like a drummer derail the plan of entertaining the crowd, Phillips made the best of things and offered a great show in a duo formation.

The singer-songwriter hails from Washington NC and keeps busy playing the entire Downeast region. Anyone interested in learning more about this talented stringer, be sure to find him on Facebook:

℘℘℘℘

Gary Dudley & The Maxxtones Take Us Out

Closing things out with a serious shot of classic rock n roll, I ran into Gary Dudley and The Maxxtones, who was rocking the deck at Blackbeard’s Triple Play Restaurant last night. Dudley is a gifted guitar player that learned his craft decades ago and still finds a way to attract new fans. Last night he grabbed the attention of a few young college fellows that could not get over the magnitude of his talent.

Always fun and rocking, this band is based along the Crystal Coast and rocks throughout the region. In fact, next week Dudley and Co will headline the Silo Palooza at The Silos Restaurant in Oriental. This one-day music festival is an Oriental tradition, featuring the hottest bands in our area. The event will go down next weekend, on Saturday, May 25th. Mark the calendar for Saturday and make plans to be there for a full day of rocking fun from Peace Soldier to The Maxxtones the day is full of rockin’ good fun and music.

Looking Back at the Week of Fun Plus a Look Ahead

Behind The Scene With Tracey Stones

Looking back at the week, there was a lot of music that I found and guess what? There is a lot ahead too!

Rehearsal with the new Bryan Mayer Band

I started the week out with logging some rehearsal time with the new line-up for the Bryan Mayer Band. This past weekend marked an end of an era for the band and the country crooner is getting ready to bring a new show to light with a new guitarist and drummer joining the ranks.

The next gig for the band will feature Victor Speight Jr on drums and John Coltrane manipulating the electric six string. Holding down the bottom is a bass man of the year, Mike Sandvig. Namesake and leader, Bryan Mayer acknowledged that 2019 has been a weird year for him. He was rather comfortable with his line up but like with all things, change sets in and directions turn. After nearly five years with the same group, it’s a period of transition for the local country singing star.

Though they can only fit one practice in per week, the players have been getting comfortable with each other for the past several weeks as they get ready to make their debut at next week’s Ayden BBQ Cook-off and Festival. That will be on Saturday night at 7 pm.

Bryan Mayer Band – Crazy In Love

Currently, the band is a part of a Facebook Competition for the song “Crazy In Love.” This new release is nominated for Song of The Year.  To cast your vote, follow the link dated May 1, ask to join the group and then cast your vote. May 1 at 10:21 AM.

Monday Evening Blues Fix

One of my favorite nights around New Bern is Monday night. That is when Big Jim Kohler brings his blues to The Brown Pelican, to offer the great Chicago style blues we all know and love. Music is offered each week from 7-9 pm.  Be sure to come out and support it soon. This is a great night for blues fans and jammers too.

A New Open Mic Night on the Links

Speaking of jams, I attended a new open mic last week. KClub at Brandywine Golf and Country Club in Morehead City now offers an open mic twice a month. Hosted by the lovely and talented Tiffany Elaine, all are welcome to attend. This club is open to the public and offers cold, beer, wine, delicious food and now live music too. All are invited to come out to see what’s new and exciting at the links this Spring and Summer season!

All Are Welcome

While in attendance for the debut, I was able to catch a few awesome stringers and singers. First up was Fernando Rivera offering his own vibe to the mix. Following his three-song set came Steve Mehan, who started out with a fine blues instrumental, one he thought would work well with some horns. Speaking of horns, next up came the fresh young talented Dakota Nyman who offered a smooth jazz set.

While I was in the house, I also had the pleasure to hear from Stephen Poole and Ashton Ward, they are both powerful voices becoming known along the Crystal Coast. Both crooners have strong country persuasion but offer some pop and rock tunes too.

Before heading back to town I was also able to enjoy a short set by the trio Now or Never. The trio came about as result of these open mics, being hosted by the singer Tiffany Elaine. Teaming up with two guitarists this trio has three songwriters too. The chemistry is great and that is captured in the essence of their music.

This week Tiffany will host Open Mic nights at Shortway Brewing Co. tomorrow with music starting at 6-9 pm. On Tuesday the crew heads to Cru Bar & Wine Store/ The Beaufort Coffee Shop for more fun from 8-11 pm. On Wednesday catch the gang at The Carolina Wine Mixer offer an open stage to share songs from 7-10 pm each week.

Honky Tonk Tuesday

When I got back in the area I stopped in at The Brown Pelican to see what was happening. I got to enjoy a few jams by Charlie Duzan, who was offering the vibes to Honky Tonk Tuesday, a fairly new feature each week at the Dirty Bird. Music plays from 7-9 pm and all country players are welcome to come out and jam.

Soulful Sounds Fill My Soul On Thursday

The elegant and popular singer Alisa Mike has had a standing gig at  City Stage New Bern, since they opened their doors nearly a year ago. In fact, Mike was the first performer to welcome attendees to the new club and she offered the crowd her debut record, a self-titled disc with so many standards we love to hear her sing. Since then, Mike has enjoyed the dinner crowd that delights in her show each week. For anyone interested in catching this fine weekly offering, come out any Thursday from 7-9 pm.

Castellano Comes to New Bern

Justin Castellano is always entertaining to take in. I caught up with the talented act on Friday night when he graced New Bern with his talent. He offered his fans and friends at BrÜtopia a fun show on Friday night. One of the things I love about this cat is the fact that he is a gear junkie and technology nerd. These combined traits always give the singer something new to talk about.

For those looking to catch this skilled player soon, you can find him on the weekend in Swansboro, NC. On Friday and Saturday nights he will be offering music to those that gather at  The Boro Restaurant & Bar. Music is offered from 8-11 pm both nights. On Sunday you can hear him offering brunch music to those that come out to Church Street Deli, Pub, & InnLive music plays from 12-2 pm.

For anyone who can’t make those shows but wishes to keep up with this talented stringer, be sure to visit his website at https://justincguitar.com

To get a taste of how talented and crazy good this stringer is, be sure to check out some of his awesome music. Here is one of my favorites:

Justin Castellano Music

Country Courtesy of Ryan Cain & Jimmy Kennedy

For the next stop, I found Ryan Cain and Jimmy Kennedy II sharing songs in the backyard of The Garage. This new family-friendly bar is located in James City and offers games for the kids and cold beer for the parents. They are making upgrades each week and soon we will have a stage in the backyard.

The Mad Fiddler Returned TO BEAR CITY TO PLAY THE PELICAN

Jason Addams is better known to this world as The Mad Fiddler, and for good reason. This talented singer and stringer is a true one-man band that offers a great mix of popular songs that many know and love. What is most unique is the way he offers those familiar songs. With a wild-eyed edge, Addams is dramatic in his delivery of the energetic songs that he offers to those that sit before him.

Many that were in the house had not seen the wonder of the Mad Fiddler and he was delighting all that I spoke with. Many had asked if I have ever seen him. Fact is, I have had my eye on his madness since I caught a clip of it on Facebook three years ago. I finally met the talented player last year at an outdoor community celebration in Cape Carteret. Since then I have enjoyed several offerings.

To keep up with the madness, be sure to become friends with Jason Addams on Facebook.

Last Call For Current Rotation

Turning our attention back to the start of this blog, I mention Bryan Mayer was working things out with a couple of new players as his current drummer and manager, Shawn Mitchell makes a break for the bass and heads to work with RT Johnson. Also pulling out to take on more corporate responsibilities is Keith Salyards, who has been offering the electric strings for the past 5 years for the country crooner, tall on talent.

Looking ahead, the new band will make their debut next Saturday, May 18, 2019, at The Ayden BBQ Cook-Off and Festival. Music starts at 7 pm.

For fans and friends of the band be sure to check out the band on Facebook at Bryan Mayer or check out his website by visiting  https://www.bryanmayermusic.com/

Affordable Partnerships For All

Corporate Unions

I am an advertising vehicle in need of a vehicle to take the dream farther. Let’s work together. If your corporate dollars help to build these well-contemplated plans, that will support the dreams of many local music makers, let’s talk about community commitment. I am very invested in this build and can’t imagine what life looks like without working on this business plan, which is going to need a lot of money to make it fire on all cylinders. Corporate Sponsorship packages start at $5,000.

Community Co-Hosts

Are you the leader in your niche? Consider partnering with me by being a stage sponsor! Proudly display your banner across the stages we set up to let locals know that you are supporting local, live music. Sponsorship dollars help to build fair pay stages for acts to offer their music. In exchange, you will be recognized as the co-host of keeping these music dreams alive! Stage sponsorships start at $1,000.

Post Hosts Are Welcome Here

If you are a small business and want to back the mission, consider being a POST HOST! As a post host, you will be featured in an article that will highlight your love of music. A post host will also be given one month of advertising in the sidebar of the blog, seen on all pages. The price to be a Post Host is $250 for one Post or $400 to be The Weekend Warrior POST HOST are just two options to consider.

Advertisers and Donors Appreciated

Back In Class Plus More Festival Fun and Music Events for Friday

This Music Business! Class is In!

Musicians spend a lot of time honing their skills, learning new techniques and mastering their instruments. Most times this investment of time yields the reward of performing your craft in front of an audience.

Make good use of that time investment after you meet the team members, that you will refer to as your band-mates, and develop a plan. Talk about it at rehearsal and write it down on paper. If you take the time to do this, it will help everyone stay on task of achieving goals that are set.

Developing a good business plan is a fine first step for any band ready to take the scene by storm. You will want to chart the course and write it out in plain detail, all of the specifics of this operation. You will want to list overhead and expenses and the means of meeting those expenses.

Detail The plan

A plan can start out as simple as; Johnny and The Rocketships are a southern rock band with four members, new on the scene and interested in playing six shows a month. For the first year, we are going to stay in a 50 mile radius of our location. We will book and accept jobs paying only $500.00 or more for a three-hour performance.

By this time next year, Johnny and The Rocketships will be blasting off on the festival circuit and developing a website for the band. Within the first year of hosting this site, we will build an online store offering hats, T-shirts, stickers and a new 5 song EP for sale online and at shows. The sale of merchandise will be recycled into the store and the profits aside for recording new material.

In this plan, you will name members and speak of their roles and personal achievement goals. This is where we look to know, who is responsible for what and their expectations for meeting those goals. Happy Planning! CLASS DISMISSED!

33rd annual Carolina Blues Festival

The Piedmont Blues Preservation Society is proud to present the longest running Blues festival in the Southeast United States!

The 33rd Annual CAROLINA BLUES FESTIVAL has happened all over the Triad. This year they bring it back to LeBauer Park at Greensboro Downtown Parks, Inc.

In recent years the society has been investing in Barber Park and supporting East Greensboro. But they have also held festivals in Jamestown and Winston-Salem as history tells.

This event is now being scripted in Downtown Greensboro for the second year in a row! NCMZ.LIVE was on hand last year for the final day of the fun festival. That is where I met my sweet blues friend Gary Redd.

It was the first time I met the singer, songwriter, former club owner and soulful stringer known as Appaloosa Redd He is a positive and vibrant talent from that area whose band closed out last year’s street fair and park festival. The blues-man stays busy around the Greensboro area with Big Ron Hunter and other talented friends.

Taking a look at this years lineup they have a fist full of fine talent on tap:

House of Dues
Melva Houston
Jon Shain
Clark Stern and The Musical Rewards
Dom Flemons

For more info and tickets visit the Piedmont Blues Society’s Website: https://carolinabluesfestival.com/artist-lineup

Durham Blues & Brews Festival

Speaking of the Blues and festivals; next Saturday also offers The Durham Blues & Brews Festival in Durham Central Park. This event gets started at 5 pm and offers amazing music until 10 pm. On the bill for this year’s event is

Born in Durham, Oxente opens the show and brings infectious rhythms of Brazil to the streets of our beloved city.

Chicken Shack is an eclectic group of church musicians who were brought together by their love of playing the blues. Although mostly from North Carolina, they have members from different parts of America – so they play many styles of blues. This band won The Triangle Blues Society, Road To Memphis Blues Challenge and had the opportunity to travel to Memphis to compete in the 2019 IBC  in January.

The young and talented star on the rise in the blues world is now 20 years old and conquering souls. Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram is set to take the music world by storm with the long-awaited release of his debut album, KINGFISH, on Alligator Records.

Closing things out this amazing night of great blues music will be the Mississippi Blues Child himself, Castro Coleman aka Mr. Sipp. This talented player has been around music all of his life. His parents and aunt had a quartet group. He was influenced by B.B. King at the age of 6 which is when he started playing the guitar.

This Music Business! Class is In!

51287894_2488375904509963_3903169895243710464_o

While we are here, we might as well live, learn, dance, sing and enjoy this life together! It’s short, so let’s make the most of it. Let’s work smart and play hard! There is far more to this music business than practicing and playing music. If you are really breaking into it to make a go of it professionally, trust me when I tell you, talent will only take you so far. The best way to prepare yourself for the road ahead is to brush up on some business practices that will help you establish and run your band like a business.

Thing is, if you wish to make a living at something and be in control of your own destiny, then you have the attributes of an entrepreneur. For any player that calls North Carolina home, I recommend reaching out to your local community college and find out where the nearest smallest business center is. Sign up to take their small business series, so that you can learn some basics that will serve you well for years to come!

Team Work Makes The Dream Work

The other thing you want to keep in mind while establishing this business is that this mission is best executed with a team. If you already have a few of your team members picked out, (band mates, publicity agent, manager, booking agent are just some examples of the players you will want on your team) consider extending the invitation of attending the classes together, so that you can build the band with shared knowledge.

Besides offering a great variety of free classes to help guide you in setting up your business, they also offer a great many classes in how to market and promote your business. Beyond these offerings, the community colleges that host these business centers, offer office space and resources for you to use as you build your band business.

To learn more about what the Small Business Center might be offering near you, be sure to visit their website North Carolina Small Business Center.

Earth Day Celebration in Downtown New Bern

On Saturday, April 20, 2019, NewBernNow.Com and New Bern Parks and Recreation teamed up to bring an Earth Day event to downtown New Bern, NC. There was fun for all in the field, on the corner of Middle and S Front St’s, from 1-4 pm in the vacant lot next to Mitchell Hardware.

The day started with the reading of the Earth Day Proclamation by Mayor Dana Outlaw, who declared April 22, 2019, as Earth Day in Downtown New Bern.

Earth-Day-Revised-041219-300x184

Special thanks to New Bern Parks and Recreation for partnering with us, so we could start the conversation and spread awareness of how we can take steps to “Refuse, Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle”.

Many came out to meet the sponsors and organizations, who are making a difference in the preservation and conservation of our local environment.

There was even a children’s craft area where kids made with eco-conscious crafts and took part in fun activities, hosted by the Boys and Girls Club of the Coastal Plains, with materials sponsored by U. S. Cellular.

Thanks to the participating Downtown Businesses:

Carolina Creations – Recycled Art Exhibit, 317-A Pollock St., 252-533-4369
Hanna House Bed & Breakfast – Beekeeping, Tesla Charging Station, and Water Reuse System Exhibits, 218 Pollock St., 252-635-3209
Living Well Down East – Explore Healthy Living and Giveaways, 309 Middle St., 252-637-0011

Earth Day After Party at The Brown Pelican

NCMZ.LIVE and The Brown Pelican teamed up to offer the after party for the town’s Earth Day event! Kicking things off on Saturday afternoon following the outdoor activities, were two of the Carolina Swamp Dogs howling the blues. They played a cool set of authentic blues, that included all of the greats like Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, and Buddy Guy, as well as throwing in some of their own music in the mix, before turning the stage over to The Neuse River Ramblers!

All in all the 2019 Earth Day Celebration that was presented by NewBernNow.com and The New Bern Parks and Recreation Department was a great success, as was the after-party. In exchange for their time, bar owner Heather Haiss has offered both bands a paid performance coming up later in the summer.

For friends and fans of the Carolina Swamp Dogs, you can enjoy a great night of their good blues this Saturday evening, when they come to New Bern to perform at City Stage. Music starts at 8 pm and there is a $5.00 music charge at the door.

Making the Scene With Tracey Stones

Last Saturday was a great example of what I hope a typical day might look like in my world. After getting things underway in town I had to return to my home base of Fairfield Harbour, to get things set up for the kick off Tracey Stones Productions 2019 Concert Series at Fairfield Harbour. We have 15 dates scheduled with various genres of entertainment.

Rubich & Cain Get the Small But Mighty Crowd Going

It was a small but mighty turn out for the first concert of the 2019 Concert series. Perhaps it was the holiday weekend that kept everyone away, but the residents that did turn out enjoyed the band and their good music. For those that missed their good grooves last weekend, mark your calendar for Saturday, May 11, 2019. They will return to the hood to perform at Sara’s Big Apple. They will share songs from 6-8 pm. In June the duo comes back to Fairfield Harbour to perform on Sunday, June 16, 2019, at Red Sail Park. Pack up your picnic baskets and come to the park for music being shared from 2-4:30 pm.

Ask the Blogger

Our first question for this new segment comes from my good friend Madonna Hawks pictured above left! She reached out to me on messenger and asked a question I have heard a few times!

She asked, “Who runs the New Bern Music Calendar page on Facebook?”

My friends Bob and Joanne’s Friedman created that page to help people who are seeking live music events in and around town! They work very hard to keep everyone in the loop and behind the scenes, I help them with their effort and use their hard work to inform people of the many events to share with others. I recommend that you check out their page and give it a like today. The link is included above.

Shake Your Money Maker and Dance

We shake our money maker around town and around the region. We will kick things off right down the road, then we also roam around Greenville some and tour around lil Washington too before the night ends because:

Saturday Night Was Made For Music

Big Jim at Sara’s Big Apple For the First Course

Sara’s Big Apple is offering live music a couple of Saturdays each month in the back room. She opened music season with the one who jump-started live music around town and brought things to a new level, Mr. Blues, Big Jim Kohler. He shared songs from 6-8 pm.

The stringer has been keeping busy since bouncing back to life again last year. He is playing three to four days each week and offers two blues jams in town as part of the lineup. In the event, you have missed the news he is at The Brown Pelican 411 Broad St., New Bern, NC each Monday sharing songs from 7-9 pm. On Wednesdays, he and the boys bring it to The City Stage.  Music also plays at 7-9 pm.

For those that need a teeny-weeny bit of The Big Jim Kohler Blues Band, be sure to head out to The Garage in James City this evening. He will be there with his bride and rocking the blues from 7-10 pm. Ad for music fans in the Fairfield Harbour area looking to support live music nights at Sara’s Big Apple, located on Broad Creek Road, come out on Saturday, April 13, 2019, to enjoy the sounds of Ashton Ward 6-8 pm

Greenville, NC for A Second Helping

After supper, I headed up Highway 17 and went by way of Highway 43 to check in with Second Helping who had a show last Saturday night at The State Theater in Greenville, NC. The Lenoir County-based band has some New Bern appeal too, with slinger Tom Spellman on guitar. The venue was cool too, with good sound and lights, friendly staff and plenty of drinks from behind the bar.

Second Helping is the longest running Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute touring today. With dates in Norway and Canada n the calendar this year, the band is going international. They don’t play often around our area but they do have some dates coming up. The line up includes the talents of Lead Singer, Jon Riggs; Drummer, Joey Gillette; Guitar, James Jones, Piano, Jackie Johnson; Guitarist, Tom Spellman; Guitarist, Chris McCallister; Bassist, Jerry Potter, Background Vocals, Fleeta Griffin, Tracey Brenneman, and Laura McCallister.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The next time the band appears in our area is on Saturday, April 13, 2019, at LaGrange Garden Spot with music playing 7-10 pm. If you like that special brand of Southern Rock made famous by Skynyrd, come see this band when they are in the area. You can keep up with their dates and the latest news by checking out their website at http://www.secondhelping.com.

Washington For Dessert

One of the best parts of writing this live music blog is finding new places that offer live music. If I made it my mission to find only new places, it would take me years to visit every place with live music. But I do seek out new bands and new venues as much as possible, as it is my hope to remind you that live music is everywhere and it needs your support tonight. My final stops on Saturday happened in Washington, NC where I met the AFreyed Knot Band and the whole family!

In fact, I met a few new friends and the Bright Family on Saturday night when I stopped by The Rebel Tavern! They are the bright stars of AFreyed Knot! Offering the popular tunes from the ’70s thru today, this band is a mixed bag of family talent and fun for friends and rock fans! Working the guitar is son Peter Bright, on bass is hubby and dad, Taylor Bright and on keys and fronting the band offering the lead on vocals is mom and wife, Lynette Bright. Sitting back behind the kit is James Stroud!

It was a wonderful night with a warm and friendly crowd. I met local live music supporter Susan Thomas who will be getting married this weekend. I want us to raise our glass to her and her beloved, Alfred Baugham, a music man himself. Cheers and best wishes!

For friends and fans of the band Afreyed Knot, the band will be a part of Pirate Fest in Greenville, NC next month! That good time happens on Saturday, April 13, 2019.

The Night Cap

My final stop for the evening, last Saturday evening was Market Street Pub located in the center of town. Offering songs was a new act here, Kevin Hartigan. A cool young kid who not only knows classic rock but rocks some original works as well, For those that want a sample of that here is an exclusive from that night.

The singer-songwriter hails from Dover Delaware. We actually have one friend in common, another stringer, Joey Fulkerson, my dear friend from long ago, a blues stringer who consumed a few chapters many moons ago.

When I spoke with Hartigan briefly on Saturday, he said he shares his music freely and you can find him on Spotify and iTunes. It was my hope that I would hear something from the artists during the week but have not received word. I have many questions, perhaps those will be answered after we connect on Facebook. I will share more when that happens.

Sweet Community Jams Greet My Sunday Night

I am lucky to live in a great tight-knit community of talented people. And not longs ago, at an open mic in town, I remember talking to Doug King about the idea of a jam at the community center. That was probably back in November.

Now there is a talented bunch of stringers and singers in my neighborhood that comes together one time each month to share songs and enjoy music making fun together. From the Downeast Dulcimers to Dan Jam Phillips, and even a Neuse River Rambler found in this bunch of players. They offered a great selection of songs in the round and played a variety of genres.

These music makers will gather again on the third Sunday in April to make music and fun music memories! Fairfield Harbour Community members are welcome to come out and enjoy the music and vibes!

Sites to See

Here are some sites to see. Tracey Stones Productions, LLC publishes www.ncmz.live and is also available to write pages and content for your already published website, provide press releases for important events, or create sites for bands and venues.

Please take moment to visit these sites that keep me writing and promoting live music.

Adam Hill Music is a site to see

I met Adam Hill in July 2016 and have been working alongside him since. The first thing I did after hearing his original music was to create a site to keep him in the spotlight any time he is off stage. The next thing was to create a YouTube Channel and created an Adam Hill Playlist for that channel.

Big Jim Kohler Blues Band

is another site to see

I met Big Jim Kohler in Swansboro, NC in March 2013. This introduction would single-handedly walk me back into music promotions. When I left town, in 2008, Salty Dawg and Mickey Milligan’s were the only bars that were supporting live music regularly. When I returned we had Bambooz and the blues and life in New Bern was already better. Kohler walked me back to my writing roots.

Big Jim and Mrs. Big Jim are some of my best friends and it’s been a pleasure to be working and representing them. To bring us to your room visit my site:

Tracey Stones Productions, LLC makes the sites to see

My goal and mission in life are connecting people to music. I am not a critic, I am a promoter. I promote supporting live music. Tracey Stones Productions publishes this blog twice weekly as a gentle reminder that there is live music everywhere in need of your support. I am available to help your band set up an effective off stage presence for more public and positive promotions!
