Kicking it at the Close of 2018

On the Scene With Tracey Stones

Happy New Year. I am glad we made it through 2018 and look forward to tackling 2019 as a team as well! Hopefully, everyone had a safe and joyous New Year!

To be honest, most years I think to myself, “Oh New Year, new start,” and not much ever changes. This year I never thought much about it and here it is the most revolutionary of all the New Years, since I started reporting on music around the state.

From this perspective, 2018 was one of serious personal growth and not much prosperity. To be honest, I have been in limbo for the last six month. I had a bit of a personal storm blow through my life and it resulted in upsetting many things, long before Florence was a thing to talk about. So with it all being said and done…good riddens!

2019 starts with big news and big changes in the life of two bloggers. With accepting the Marketing Director and Ad Sales Executive position for NC Life Media, I look forward to meeting lots of people as we help them promote their business in the community and beyond.

The most exciting part of this position is the ability to offer our advertisers so many platforms to help them grow. We are ready to offer three stages for business development. We can offer our advertisers affordable radio, print and online exposure.

If you have a business and look for new ways to get the word out to people about your products, please, contact me today 318-789-6929 and we can build an effective and affordable marketing plan for the year ahead!

Blogger Returns to the Beat

,After 11 days with fever and 13 days of rest, on Saturday, December 29, 2018, I made my way back to the scene, just in time for the year-end wrap up around town.

I started things off with stopping by to visit my friends at BrUtopia, where I enjoyed the sounds of the sweet Sabra Mason. I met this talented soul at an open mic night in Newport a couple of months ago and have enjoyed hearing her several times since.

Our mutual friend Tiffany Elaine introduces her as the Reba McIntyre of our region. Offering a great variety of pop and country songs, she can go gospel and sing the blues too. Besides covering popular songs, the artist is a songwriter in her own right. To learn more visit her page on Facebook.

Bad Decisions Band Rocked the Deck at Blackbeard’s

Blackbeard’s Triple Play offered a new band for the crowd to welcome, the last Saturday of 2018! On the deck and making ’em dance was the Bad Decisions Band from the Smithfield area.

The fun party band boasts two lead singers and offers a variety of popular songs for the audience. With most of the focus on Southern rock and country selections, they had the crowd boot scooting before finishing their first set. They kept the good times rolling, until they wrapped up their debut on S Front St.

Mark your calendars now if you missed it, because venue owner Dale Overbee will have them back for another New Bern night on Saturday, February 2.

Come dance like a groundhog and have some fun! Free music is offered 7:30-11 pm on the deck and later rocking inside the walls of the downtown bar and restaurant!

The band line up includes Shane Norris, Valerie Boyette, who swap in offering the lead and backing vocals, Clay Benson, plays the acoustic strings, Matt Starling is lead on electric strings, Rebekah Martin offers keyboard riffs, Ben Hayes hiding out in the back but adding the bottom beats on bass and behind the kit, Zach Pleasant. This traveling band offers a fun night of entertainment for any crowd that likes to cut up.

They will be playing around other areas in the region as well in the weeks ahead. Be sure to like their band page and check out their upcoming Facebook events.

Bryan Mayer Closes Out Busy Year Close to Home

Without much notice and word came the news that Bryan Mayer would perform the last Saturday of the year in town at The Brown Pelican. Joining the singer and stringer with bongo beats and backing vocals was Mayer’s longtime friend Critty Robinson.

Offering all of the fan favorite grooves that keep the popular country artist and CCMA Male Vocalist of the Year in the spotlight. A packed house at the Dirty Bird enjoyed the show!

The Brown Pelican has been a big supporter of live music since opening their doors. They offer an open mic every Thursday, with sign up at 7 pm and music starting at 8 pm. Fridays offer the best in regional acoustic acts. Free music plays 7-10 pm. Saturdays bring the best in the bands who rock you each week from 8-11 pm.

Fans and friends who missed him last week can find Bryan Mayer along the Crystal Coast tonight. He will offer his first acoustic show at Promise’ Land Market. Music plays 8:30 – 11:30 pm.

For fans and friends who wish to see the full band in their best element, be sure to order tickets for the CMMA’s on January 26, 2019. New Bern Had Something for Everyone on NYE

The City’s first-ever “Bear Drop” took place at midnight on Monday night/Tuesday Morning in front of the City Hall to ring in the New Year. This amazing event was made possible thanks to Toyota of New Bern and the hard-working people at City of New Bern Parks and Recreation Department. Together they organized the City’s first ever NYE Block Party.

A lot of spontaneous and last minute hard work brought our city the best ever NYE celebration in the town’s recent history. The night-long event opened to the public at 5 pm and offered food and drink vendors, a big stage featuring two live music acts and a bear drop from the corner of the clock tower at the top of City Hall.

Sitting in the studio for the New Bern and Beyond Podcast, which will air Monday when the topic came up, I asked Colleen Roberts if they did many rehearsals for the timed drop and she assured me they did. Be sure to tune in to hear about other behind the scenes fun facts.

On the stage and providing the entertainment for the evening was Adam Pitts, a talented solo act the offers a full band sound with a few mixers and settings on the pedals. The Raleigh based singer welcomed the crowd to the stage, on Pollock St. just after 6 pm. The free event was well received by the citizens and many visitors in attendance.

On stage and rocking the party beats from 9 pm until the midnight countdown we enjoyed Love Tribe, another Raleigh based band that offered a fun and diverse set of music to keep the crowd excited.

Just before the stroke of midnight, Mayor Dana Outlaw came to the stage and thanked the crowd, as we all counted down the final seconds together.

Besides the big block party in town, I bounced about and found lots of other parties taking place in all corners of New Bern.

℘℘℘℘

At The City Stage

The City Stage offered Drag to Riches. This entertaining night featured Madame Z and her Divas, who provide comedy song and dance as they engage the crowd.

℘℘℘℘

The Bears Played the Elks Club

I found New Bern’s favorite oldies band, The Bears rocking with the youngsters that gathered for a fun night of dinner and dance at the Elks Lodge.

The crowd enjoyed the music and the Bears enjoyed their audience. Giving away prizes and engaging their friends, everyone enjoyed the night at the Elks Lodge.

To keep up with The Bears Band on Facebook, visit their page and give it a like to keep up to dates with show announcements.

3 Day Weekend Rocks Monette J G Grocery ~ A NYE Tradition

For as long as they have been doing it, local rockers 3 Day Weekend have played New Year’s Eve at Monette’s J G Grocery. This tradition started when they formed 14 years ago. This fun time is an affordable $10 and offers and community setting complete with food for all and beverages sold on site.

The New Bern based rockers always fill the dance floor, just like they always close out New Year’s Eve on Free Bird, a classic southern rock anthem by Lynyrd Skynyrd.

℘℘℘℘

Peace Soldier At The Brown Pelican

Speaking of classic rock, Peace Soldier was offering the classic rock grooves at The Brown Pelican. No photos were taken as the band was rocking the crowd in the dark.

I wish every band that sets up at the Brown Pelican would take note of the brown cord beneath the wall outlet. Don’t be shy, plug that cord in so that the lights can shine on you and people can see your faces! Dan Jam Phillips helped rig those lights three years ago and they are very useful. Please use them if you play there!

Turning the spotlight back on classic rockers Peace Soldier, they will be part of a fun event that will raise money for those effected by Hurricane Florence.

Interestingly enough, each of the band’s on this bill can tell you of their significant losses and share their story of the flood that tried to defeat us. Headliners, Strung Together are the family band that lost their home on E Front Street to the named storm. They are excited to be moving back into the dwelling to continue renovations later this month.

Lead singer and founding member of Peace Soldier, Robert Hurff, was rescued from his dwelling as the water entered his living space. Two of the players in The Hot Buttered Grits saw the river rush through their homes as well. And opening the show tomorrow at the Turnage Theater is The Neuse River Ramblers, a band featuring banjo player Danny Batten, who suffered severe damage to his store Surf Wind & Fire, located on Middle St in Downtown New Bern.

All will gather on one ticket for the 6th Annual Guitar Fest, a free show for any who wish to attend. Please consider bringing a considerable donation, as this is a fundraising event and this year the money raised will be filtered back into New Bern for Hurricane Relief. Your help is still very much much needed!

Music starts at 4 pm! Hope to see you there.

Irresistible Groove & Masquerade at Blackbeard’s Triple Play & The Farmer’s Market

Blackbeard’s Triple Play hosted a fun night featuring a masquerade party. Given this fun option, many towns people showed up to town with their masks

The band hired for the night played on stage a the Farmers Market. Irresistible Groove offered a fun music experience for the masked dancers that gathered for the good times. The Triangle-based party band made it irresistible for people to groove, hence the fitting name.

When not rocking the grooves with this band, a few of the members gather to offer Groove5band. I recommend you look for and like both band pages on Facebook.

Building Dreams with Live Music

Behind the Scenes with Tracey Stones

On Friday morning I saw a Facebook post that announced Bryan Mayer was going to be a guest in the studio at Charles Tendell Studios, for an appearance on New Bern Live. When I saw the post, I mentioned that I wanted to be there.

New Bern Live’s Cheryl McCarthy talks with promoter Kim Briele and Country Artist Bryan Mayer and Party Crasher Tracey Stones joined the conversation!

About 12 minutes into the show,  I stopped by the studio and jumped in to talk about the special guest, local country crooner and CCMA 2018 Male Vocalist of the Year Bryan Mayer.

It has been a very exciting year for the country singer, that kicked off the year at the CCMA Awards, held at The House of Blues in North Myrtle Beach, SC. Having been there for those moments in the singer-songwriter’s career, I wanted to share my angle with the world.

Bryan Mayer 2018

The whole reason one might become a blogger is, this obsession with telling the fun stories of people’s lives. I was invited to this awards show at the last minute, earlier this year and accepted the opportunity. It was another fun night with the national country band New Bern considers their own.

Years before Florence ever put New Bern on the map, Bryan Mayer had us ranked on the National Country Charts, thanks much in part to his fans requesting to hear his song, “This is Me.” on the radio! Truly a dream come true.

That song put this son of a US Marine Corps Colonel and a Navy nurse on a country road that has been good to him ever since. This year and just weeks ago, that hit song was released as a Karaoke selection for the Sound Choice Karaoke Catalogs. The talented singer-songwriter was on hand for the big release during a party at The Brickhouse in Raleigh last month.

Currently, Bryan Mayer Band has a new single for sale and request on the radio. You can buy “Crazy In Love,” at all of the popular spots. Google, Apple, Spotify, etc.  Please visit the website to read all about this artist who is tall on giving back to his community!

 BRYAN MAYER

The band will perform again at the CCMA, as they position themselves for more recognition on the country charts in 2019.

Swapping Ideas With Stingers and Singers

My mission in this music business is to create communities everywhere. The goal in doing this is to create a healthier music community with fair pay stages in communities near in far. Partnering with community leaders to make opportunities happen for music makers and venues that support them.

One of the reasons I got back into this business is, because of the fun creative process involved behind the scenes of the business. They say if you do what you love for a living, you will never work a day in your life. I love working with bands and showing them how to set themselves up as a business. Thing is, most bands get together with the intent of having fun and making some money. If you put a lot of time into it, you will need to make money from your craft to support it. Given that it is essential for bands to establish themselves as a professional unit leaving the gate!

Rubich & Cain

When Ryan Rubich reached out about meeting with me, we finally connected the other night when I rolled into Jacksonville. We grabbed a bite to eat and enjoyed some good conversation about the music business. I am available to do this with anyone who is serious about creating their niche in the business. Of course most bands approach me on the hope and thought that I would consider being an agent. I am a promoter and a writer. I am a separate entity all my own, who is creating opportunities for everyone who goes out in support of live music.

It was not long ago that Rubich teamed up with Jared Cain and he was interested in hearing some insight on where they could bring the project. For anyone interested in checking out the duo, they will be rocking the Salty Turtle Beer Co. next Saturday from 6-9 pm.

Open Mic Madness at The Crystal Coast

On Monday, December 10, 2018 I headed out to Shortway Brewing Company to enjoy the talents that come out to take part in the Singer-Songwriter Open Mic hosted by Tiffany Elaine and her band Now or Never.

  • Sabra Mason is a talented country artist with a great many songs to share. She was the first player I got to enjoy at the Singer-Songwriter Open Mic Night.
  • The youngest star of the night was MacKenzie Webb who has a strong presence with a penetrating voice and mad music skills on a ukulele and piano too.
  • Wiregrass is the husband and wife bluegrass band featuring Brian and Pat Till. This couple will be in New Bern tomorrow afternoon to sing songs with the senior residents at The CourtYards at Berne Village.
  • Now or Never is a new band out of Beaufort which came together as a result of the many open mics nights hosted by the beautiful Tiffany Elaine. This trio features Elaine with her music brothers and best friends, Fernando Rivera and Steve Mehan.

Tiffany Elaine does a great job at seeking out venues that will host open mic nights for area artists along the crystal coast. She hosts as many as four open mic in a week but on most weeks she hosts a minimum of two events. The music hostess can be found at the Cru Bar in Beaufort, Crystal Coast Brewing Company in Morehead City,  Shortway Brewing Company in Newport and other places as well.

Elaine does a great job hosting the nights, keeping the stage rotating with talent and always sharing kind words of each performer that graces the stage. The future burns bright for this young talented woman! Keep up to date with her by following her music page on Facebook:

The first act we will be featuring is Tom Kimmel who makes his home in Hattiesburg, MS but hails from Alabama. He will be offering his songs to our area in mid-month, next month. Be sure to check back for a feature on him before his first show at The City Stage on Wednesday, January 16, 2019.

Back when the Society was established, this nonprofit organization that remains committed to Folk Arts, would drum up membership and sell tickets to the shows they sponsored. Those funds would in turn be used to support the artists that came to play. So many things have changed over the years with the live music scene.

A Brief History of the Live Music Scene

Back in the ’70s and ’80s bands were paid fairly for their talents by venues and promotes. In the ’90s a lot of things changed on the scene for two main reasons: First and foremost, there were more laws on the books, which is not a bad thing, but it cut into the bottom line and took a while to overcome. Luckily, for bar owners everywhere though, there was this invention of “homemade rock stars” we all know as KARAOKE! This invention shapeshifted the live music scene greatly.

Bar owners could offer a night of entertainment that people loved because they were the stars, and it only cost them $100. Why pay a band $800? It becomes a legitimate question. So band prices dropped significantly in the local markets. Nonetheless, musicians still want to play so will forge through hard times. The new millennium offered the reinvention of the key to all popular street musician,  the tip jar. This trend started with passing the hat, now we just walk to the front of any stage and drop money in the tip jar.

The Road Ahead

Given that history and the trends of the times, this new board came to agree that doing away with paid membership would boost the interest and benefit the artists more. Having said that you are welcome to join the Down East FolkArts Society. You can do it easily enough by visiting http://www.downeastfolkarts.org/

Warriors Night at Nick’s

Nick’s Blacksheep Tavern offered a special night of music last night with Warrior’s Night. This event offered four Marine Veterans on one stage swapping stories and sharing their songs.

Making up the frontline for this event was Mike Corrado,
Anderson ElswickJP Guhns and  Matt Bowlin Each stringer shared stories and songs written during their time in service, These songs offered glimpses at the places they called home, included tales of their upbringing and family, as well as their time serving this great land.

It was a moving night of great talent. Each player displayed their unique style. Most songs offered a country flavor but many styles were touched on throughout the night. Each performer has songs for sale. Be sure to click on each of their names to visit their page on Facebook. Like that page and visit their websites too

The host of this wonderful event was Nick’s Blacksheep Tavern which is owned by retired Marine, Nick Nichols. It was a great evening spent in the company of our nation’s heroes.  Here’s to hoping that we can have more music events like this!

Dream Big and Build A Music Community

Dream Big and Make it Your Mission

Dream Big and Give Them Your Heart!

If I had my way, no one would suffer, more music would play and even the grown children would dance! I believe in my talents and I work hard in my voluntary efforts to build a stronger music community! I have reached the point of no turning back because I believe that we can do this…but I can’t do it without your help! Since 2015, I have been working one business so to build another. I set out with the idea of taking my time as I showed people my talents. From March 2015 until September 2018, I could afford to offer this service which was supported by my day job.

As a writer and a promoter, I feel there is an important role to fill on the music scene. I use my talents as a videographer to stream live on Facebook and my skills as a still photographer, so to collect pictures that support the words I write and publish on this site. The goal is to set out each night that  I can and find live music locally. Then, when people say there is nothing to do around here, I shake my head, and hand them a card! After I do that, I find a new follower and friend on the music bus. How magnificent! Since 2016,  we have been publishing a minimum of two stories each week. I do have a man behind the scenes helping me. Meet my editor, Breeze!

My best friend and favorite human, meet our editor; BREEZE!

♦ ♦ ♦ ♦

The Facts of the Matter

I am always grateful to those that take the time to read about my musical journeys. Thank you for being here. Throughout this adventure, I have done my best for musicians and music venues alike and I have done it freely, without asking for much from anyone. I am an observer and a storyteller, whose favorite subject is music and favorite characters are musicians.

As the story goes, and most people already know it, I am a house cleaning contractor. This is how I have made my living for the past 13 years. Tracey’s Clean Sweep is my third established cleaning business, over the course of my cleaning career. The reason for that is because I am a rambling soul who always follows her heart. I sold my first business in 2009 before moving to Canada. In 2010 I started my second business in Louisiana and would relocate and register my business of the same name here in NC,  in 2013. I am currently working with zero employees since Florence, which also left me with zero desire to train anyone. Fact is, I was moving on before the flood.

To this day and for 13 years, I have been involved with every job. I love that my hard work is helpful to the people I serve. It’s an honest living and rewards of the instant gratification are endless. I walk into homes that are messy and when I leave they shine! That never grows old. But I do and am, daily! And the fact is, it hurts me now as I near 50 years old, so I know I won’t be able to sustain doing this work like I do, up and through the age of retirement. I just won’t! What you are witnessing here is nothing short of the backup plan.

IMG_3621 (4)

Build Your Biggest Dream

As a rule, house cleaners are disposable since disposable income pays for their services in many cases. When I hit a lull and my son was 17 and talking college, a few years ago, I was faced with a choice. I could use my free time to get a remedial paying job to help one company with my skills or use my free time to create another business and help a music community grow stronger.  Being innovative in my mind, always, I invested time in the latter and developed this site and a promotions business to support it. Tracey Stones Productions is that business which publishes this blog. You can visit my website at www.traceystonesproductions.com.

I would love to see this blog site offer daily stories from many writers, in many regions, around the state. Currently, I am only one person writing and I am working hard at two businesses, doing it with old equipment and exhausting myself along the way! I want for this to be my only work each day for the rest of my life! The only thing I lack is the revenue needed for expansion.

Erect the Stage

After dedicating two full years to the mission of promoting local music, I was exploring options of exiting the cleaning business. I was considering the sale of my house cleaning contracts to several buyers. The idea was to invest the sale of that business so to jump start this business. And then Florence came along and wiped out so much of my workload there was hardly enough work left after the water receded to keep me afloat. Today there is nothing to sell today and I really don’t care to dwell on that, because so many others around me are hurting in a far worse way.

Over the years, because of my passion for music, my following on social media has grown considerably. I can’t even keep up, to be honest! And yes, I will ask you your name ten times, please don’t be offended. No matter how many get in the zone, I want even more people on board the music bus! This build is going to take a village and I know so many music-loving supporters that I know the build is possible.

After the storm, I just wanted to help my community however I could. I delivered meals, I distributed emergency relief buckets, I went looking for items that people needed.  And I went live to ask for help.

Those people, those beautiful followers of mine answered the call and sent whatever I requested! First, it was masks and gloves, then cleaning supplies and personal hygiene supplies and now it is household goods; linens, plates, lamps, furniture, curtains, etc.

Follow Your Heart

The work you see here, on this site, it’s my passion. It’s my heartbeat. And I feel it is important to work for the community I serve. This is not a new path for me. This is where my life was on course to go, once upon a time,  until I decided to raise my beautiful son alone. I took myself out of the game! I just could not be out in the bars until 1 or 2 in the morning, which was more the norm back then;  and be a good day mom too. I stopped writing after his birth in 1998, and I stopped promoting music entirely, for a full decade, in 2005. That is when I left the music scene in NJ/PA to rebuild a life with the help of my village, my family, in NC.

I took all of the skills I learned in promoting musicians and applied it to building my cleaning business. Within months of that practice,  I learned that I could make more money promoting my electric vacuum than I ever did when promoting an electric guitar. This came in handy when I looked down to see my 6-year-old looking up to me. I volunteered at his school once a week, and I built a cleaning business around putting him on and getting him off the bus. I have no regrets about putting my life on hold to watch and help him grow.

To this day, I work from 8 am until 2 pm in my cleaning business. I have cleaned homes, businesses, new construction, churches, and the highlight of it all came when I was picked to be the cleaning contractor for the film crew that filmed the A&E Series, Duck Dynasty. I did that for the first three seasons, until returning to New Bern in late 2012.

Stay Interesting

That was the Louisiana chapter and it was there that I cleaned for one of the coolest people I ever met. Sidney Wilhite’s home was over 18,000 square feet and I loved cleaning every square inch of it.  It was like a museum and people did take tours of it on the regular. It took two days a week to clean it all and every week I learned something new!

Mr. Sidney is the only person I ever met with a cannon on his front porch and a lion that needed dusting.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

As exciting as it might be to hear about all the toilets I have scrubbed, I truly get a thrill out of telling people about music. Music is healing and promoting it is something I was doing before I graduated high school.

The highlights of my published writing career are mentioned on my bio page and my greatest dream remains to heal the world with music. Bringing people together for the celebration of music is my only mission in this next career. I feel it is a worthy mission because we are one hurting society, with many different pains holding us back from being our true self!  There are plenty of needs and causes out there and many hearts can mend with help of music.

Ask For Help

IMG_3817.JPG

I mention all of this because I now need the help of my community to get this to the next level. And I promise if you help me get it there, not only will the tip jars and donations links disappear, but I will be paying it forward for the rest of my days. Not just by paying it back to you in my services, but your friends and neighbors and their friends too!

I feel like my efforts have already paid it forward for the venues and the bands that I cover. Lately, though, my field of dreams keeps growing but my reality keeps closing in on me. It’s just a rough spot I guess. I am currently driving a 2002 GMC Yukon with nearly 400,000 miles on it. Last week a musician who seeks my attention asked me in an off-handed way when was I going to make it out to see his band near Winston Salem. I understand he has been inviting me out for 10 months and, as much as I would love to say tomorrow, I have to rather admit that I am stuck in town because I can’t get out of here.

My car repairs are far more than I can afford and I’m pretty sure that they are not worth it either. Some days we just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other and hope for the best. I  know I did my best in freely putting 200,000 miles on my truck chasing music and telling people about it!  Now she is tired and I am even more exhausted trying to keep her.

Keep Dreaming and Dream Big!

My biggest hopes today are finding a local car dealership to consider NCMZ.LIVE as a great advertising outlet, and support my efforts with a better running, good on gas vehicle. Something that is cheaper than $65 per tank and offers more than 14 miles a gallon, would mean improvement! History notes, that I will drive their product all over the state and talk about them on my journey as I thank them each step of the way!

It is my next biggest hope that the readers and those that have benefited from my efforts would consider helping in the expansion. We can grow this to be an app for finding local live music but that takes revenue to make it happen. I will gladly advertise your business to build that revenue. Another way to help, for those who don’t have a business to advertise, is filling the tip jar.   http://Paypal.me/ncmz Every little bit helps!  I know that once I have what is needed to get this off the ground, we are going to rock the world!

The road ahead is rather exciting and I am thrilled that you are a part of the journey. As far as I can see, there is a lot of work to be done and more hands always make for lighter work. Thanks for being here and hanging out. You make the journey more fun and I thank you!

Behind The Scenes With Tracey Stones

The reason I started things off differently today and put the light on myself for a change is that Charles Tendell encouraged me to put my story out there! It happened on Thursday night. I was invited to the Charles Tendell Studios to be a guest on New Bern Live. It was a nice opportunity to share some of my dreams and visions for this community I love! Before leaving the studio, Tendell encouraged me to reach out to people and tell them my story! I know one thing,  I dream daily about bringing healing vibes to people through the fun of music. For anyone interested in checking out that interview, please follow this link and join me in dreaming big and healing with music!!! It really will take a village to get us to the next level of growth and development.

Let’s Have A Conversation With Tracey Stones of NCMZ.LIVE

I truly appreciate all of the love and support my followers offer me in my missions with music. I look forward to where this path will lead us all! We are going to do great things and be an example for the world to follow.

On the Scene With Tracey Stones

As we concluded above, I have been hovering around the home base for a few weeks now, due to car repairs that are needed for safe travels. Luckily there are lots of people around here to love and many music makers to talk about!

Big Jim Brings the Blues and his Fans Bring The Toys for Tots

I started things off last night, just over the bridge in James City. That is where we found Big Jim Kohler rocking the crowd at BrUtopia, with his steady rhythm section and soulful bride. Along with offering the freshest beer, friends gathered and brought toys for the Marines on hand for the Toys for Tots drive. Before the night ended the box was overflowing. What an awesome town we call home! It’s was a wonderful reminder that there are a lot of kids who will need toys this year, so please give generously if you can!

Also adding to the groove last night was the harmonica player from Colorado, Lee Tibbetts, who came out on Wednesday night to jam with Kohler. His reaction to being in the presence of Kohler is one I can relate to. I remember moving back to town in 2013 and stumbling upon Jim in Swansboro, NC. It was then I turned my attention back to my true love for music. This is why I rallied for this man’s life and health last year when he fell ill. He inspires my path and helps me grow.

To check him out for yourself, stop out this month for one of his Wednesday night blues offerings at The City Stage. The band plays from 7-9 pm.

Bluegrass and Beer Was the Theme at The Bruin

The night was billed as Seth Smith and Friends for those who don’t know, Smith is one of the players with The Hot Buttered Grits, New Bern’s jam band. Smith was joined by his grits counterpart John Johndrow on guitar and his friend Beth D’Angelo, offering bass and vocals. D’Angelo also plays with the band Cigar Box Jesus & The Revelation.

Beyond the folk sound and bluegrass selections were the fun jams that everyone enjoyed. It was a fun night with like-minded friends sharing the stage!

Carrboro Acts Makes an Appearance at The Brown Pelican

Meet XOXOK

The first duo we heard at the front of the room was that of XOXOK, a duo featuring the soulful vocals and melodic guitar sounds of Keenan Jenkins and the twistedly talented beats of Joe MacPhail. This duo got together about two years ago and have some fun when given the opportunity to make music together. The Carrboro based outfit has a Facebook page which you can visit by clicking:

XOXOK

The Oblations Close Out The Night

Next to the stage front came The Oblations. This Carbrro act has played around town several times in the past couple of years. They are a talented act offering the talents of Joe MacPhail on drums keyboards and vocals while his music brother from another mother, Daniel Fields offers the guitar parts and adds vocals as well. They were introduced to us by our friends at GEM Productions.

What’s exciting about this talented unit is that you are watching two guys on stage while looking for the full band. Fields work out the bass and guitar parts with his handcrafted six string, made for him by his father.  Meanwhile, in the other corner, MacPhail offers keyboards and drums while knocking the vocals out too.

Both of the groups featured at the dirty bird last night offer music that takes the soul on an original journey. If you ever make your way to Carrboro be sure to keep an ear out for their efforts. You will be entertained!

Blackbeard’s Hosted Saltwater Gold

I made it out to Blackbeard’s Triple Play in just enough time to hear the last couple selections offered by The Saltwater Gold Band. This group hails from Oriental and offers the sounds of classic rock that people love. They also write their own music and mix up the night with some fresh works created by their guitar player, Chris Daniels, and lead singer Mark Hoff.

To keep up to speed with this band and to keep up on their events like their band page on Facebook:

Hurricane Relief is Still a Thing ’round Here

On the Scene With Tracey Stones

46444491_2200511233306985_8186478274885451776_n

Last weekend we wrapped things up at another benefit. This pause for the cause was a hurricane relief effort to raise the money needed to fix and restore Pamlico County Schoo,l so that children can return to their classes. It was organized by the well-known sax man on the scene James Durham, who not only jams with many bands but is also a music instructor at Pamlico County College.

In all five bands came together for this event, which was held in the AH Hatsell  Auditorium at Pamlico County High School. I was able to be there to watch four of the bands play. They sold T-shirts and had a food vendor on site. It was a fun Sunday afternoon full of music and filled with love for the kids at Pamlico County Middle School.

Bands Band Together for Hurricane Relief

Brant Island Strings

The Brant Island Strings are a folk-infused string band is from Pamlico County, who play a fun blend of familiar music. This quartet features the talents of Rick Vogt offering vocals and guitar, his wife Ginny Vogt, also on vocals and guitar, Becky Ackiss plays the upright bass and shares vocals and Perry Cheatham plays the mandolin. To get to know the band better you can find them on Facebook. Just visit their band page and give it a like.

Beaufort Blues Project

The six-piece band from the Crystal Coast, The Beaufort Blues Project came out to offer a set of great music for the fans, who came out in support of this worthy cause. The last time I ran into this band they were also donating their talents for hurricane relief. That last time it was closer to home at the Amped Up gig in Morehead City.

Tomorrow night this band has a paid gig at The Backstreet Pub. Music plays at 9 pm and I encourage everyone who heads out there to fill this good-hearted band’s tip jar until it is overflowing. Show them love in return for all of the love they have shared to help others. To find them on Facebook follow this link:

The Spread

Next to the stage came the good grooves of The Spread. This is another band I was able to catch up with a couple weeks ago, donating their time for Hurricane Relief, closer to home. They too played The Amped Up Benefit that took place earlier this month in Morehead City. A place where some of the players call home.

This band is refreshingly original and great fun to hear. I have loved them since the first time I heard them, at the Backstreet Pub in Beaufort, back in May 2015. Playing the show on Sunday we got to hear the blended talents of Kathryn Morgan, offering her powerful vocals, Chris Taylor on guitar, Will Phetterplace on drums, Phil Wilson on bass and Chris White offering rhythm guitar and the newest groove maker, Jim Durham on saxophone.

To keep up to date with this band visit their Facebook page and like it while you are there.

The Dust Parade

The Dust Parade closed out this event which highlighted our area’s music scene all on one stage. It was a wonderful event that raised money for kids, which always warms the heart. Besides closing out the day, bandleader, Hank Barbee ran the sound for this event.

On Wednesday I closed out the blog stories with how the band wrapped up the night. They offered their song, “The Best Way.” Giving you all a glimpse of their newest number. Here is how they opened their set.

The Dust Parade features Hank Barbee on vocals and guitar, Jim Durham on sax and backing vocals, Matt Henderson on bass guitar and Logan Watson behind the kit, banging out the beats.

Joe Baes Project Rock BrÜtopia for 2nd Annual Halloween Bash!

The Joe Baes Project brought the good times and fun music, for the Second Annual Halloween Bash at BrUtopia last Saturday, October 27, 2018. Offering cover songs from grunge to straight up rock originals, they always sound good serving up the sounds.

2018 offered the main trio of the project, see some transition with original bass brother Mike Galloway moving away. Baes reached out to a good friend on the scene from years before Dan Taylor, to join his project. Since the spring of this year, the trio has been working hard combing through songs and making lists that feature rock, pop country, as well as the original music. The band is now fronted by namesake Joe Baes on guitar and vocals,  and Jonathon Toler back behind the kit on drums and vocals. Sometimes the project includes guest players on percussion and keys too.

Rock Stop Two

The BiPolar Express Arrives at Blackbeard’s Station on Saturday

Next up it was over the bridge in search of trolls and ghouls, we stop at Blackbeard’s Triple Play and rock with The BiPolar Express. The trio was dressed, like 80’s tennis players. Doing warmups between sets, it was the first chilly night of the season for music under the tent, and they were all sporting shorts. Rocking the packed crowd until 11:30 pm, they offered so many favorites, including a couple ACDC selections, Bon Jovi offering, Motley Crue and even Ratt to get the crowd moving. If you like 80’s hair bands you should make it a point to enjoy this band at a venue near you.

Rocking for Relief

While on the subject of these two local trios, I will take a minute to mention that their next gigs will be on the same stage. Both trios will be rocking for the relief of our homeless veterans. In time for Veteran’s Day Weekend, this is the Third Annual Concert put on By Robert Hurff of RCS and Peace Soldier. Helping area veterans has been his mission for years and a few years back he organized this concert to amp up his contributions.

On the bill, this year are four local bands and one regional act that will Shoot to Thrill you. You can buy your tickets in town at Mitchell’s Hardware on Craven St. or at Fullers Music on Trent Rd. or buy your ticket at the gate. Come out and jam with local family band Strung Together, rockers Joe Baes Project, the BiPolar Express, Peace Soldier and regional rockers, Shoot To Thrill, the all-female ACDC tribute act. That is a fine ticket of entertainment for a great cause. For more information on the show check out  the Peace Soldier Website today:
