Last night I stayed local and caught a couple early shows!

Thirsty Bruin Hosts Local Singer & Stringer Ed Prophet

Last night the weather offered more rain which put a damper on some events about town, but what I did manage to catch I thoroughly enjoyed! My first stop brought me to The Thirsty Bruin, 224 Middle St., New Bern, where I enjoyed the sounds of local song maker Ed Prophet. The talented stringer and singer keeps busy on the road offering music to fans along the Crystal Coast. I had just missed Ed last weekend at the Cape Carteret Fall Festival, so seeing him last night was long overdue. He offered two fine sets to friends that gathered at the Thirsty Bruin last night. Tonight the singer will be entertaining at The Church Street Deli and Pub, located at 99 W Church St., Swansboro, NC. Music is offered from 7-10 pm. Carolina Sky Delights Bike Riders and Offers Bluegrass and More

There was a fundraiser in full swing last night when I stopped at The Brown Pelican and Carolina Sky was offering the fun grooves when I got there. They performed in a trio formation with Caroline Tanner, Phil Lanier, Sara Rosellen offering the sounds with all things strings. They swapped out between banjo, guitars, mandolins, and violin. The beautiful thing about this band is their uniqueness. At press time I had no news about upcoming gigs, but when I hear the news I will share it with you first!

The Brown Pelican often teams up with local charities to combine, music, food and fundraising fun. Next month you can join the cause for the cause with Lily Fest, brought to us by GEM Productions and the good people at Bernaroo Music and Arts Festival and help support the Coastal Women’s Shelter.

Carolina Lily Fest 2018

GEM Productions is proud to announce that Carolina Lily Fest returns for its fourth year on November 17th, as New Bern’s premier outlet for the celebration of powerful women in our community. Each year, Carolina Lily Fest hosts an array of female musicians, artists, and vendors, who donate their time and efforts to raise money for the Coastal Women’s Shelter, the sole provider of no-cost comprehensive domestic violence services in Craven, Jones, and Pamlico counties. CWS is an organization that does so much to provide for our community, so let’s bear together and help raise funds for this incredible organization. This year’s event will return to The Brown Pelican for an evening full of female empowerment for a fantastic cause!

This year’s event will be headlined by the immensely talented Crystal Bright, an incredible Chapel Hill-based singer/multi-instrumentalist, who blends European and American world music influences, twisting her music into a darkly cinematic yet operatic burst of energy. Additional eastern NC based acts will be announced soon!

The Brown Pelican, 411 Broad St., opens it’s doors to local acts each week. Live music kicks off each Thursday with open mic. Sign up at 7 pm and music starts at 8 pm… All are welcome. Let’s Kick the Weekend into High Gear with Music

New Bern Boasts the Blues Weekly

I have said it before and I will tell you again; the blues is alright! Knowing that we can celebrate it each week is equally as wonderful. It was announced earlier this month the Big Jim Kohler would be the regular Tuesday entertainment at City Stage New Bern, located at 901 B Pollock St., New Bern, NC.

Since the club opened, Big Jim has been a regular feature on stage., but now they have increased the volume on the blues and will be ushering in each Tuesday with two sets of fun and fine Chicago style blues with Big Jim on guitar and vocals, and his beautiful bride, Kathy Kohler on vocals, Chris Buttita on bass and Tom Parker on drums. Music from these cats starts at 7 pm and the entertainment is free.

If you have not heard Big Jim bring his blues, you are missing out on New Bern’s blazing sapphire string man. Born with many talents, he pursued music only after sports led him to injury. Here is the most recent band bio drafted by Kathy sent to me by Big Jim earlier in the week.

Meet the Band!

“Nearly 30 years into a playing career, Big Jim Kohler manages to keep it fresh every time he makes his way to the stage. He started cutting chords in clubs on Long Island and in New York City, before long he was playing festivals and alongside heroes and friends. With many stories to share and two CD’s under his belt; The Road Goes On Forever and The Party Never Ends.

On the caravan, these days are Kathy Kohler, a veteran of theater and clubs. Singing blues and gospel all while being the wife and mom to Big Jim’s brood. Chris Buttita is on bass; hailing from Chicago, Buttita also plays bass for North Carolina’s Hot Buttered Grits, a New Bern based jam band with a large and devoted fan base that love roots, funk and jamming good music. The drum stool is manned by Tom Parker from Syracuse, NY. Parker crossed Big Jim’s path out on the road, back in the day when Parker was keeping the beat with harp master Carey Bell and Kohler was swapping licks and backing the legendary bluesman Son Seals. After running into each other in Eastern Carolina it was only natural for the two to team up.

Always a good time Big Jim Kohler moves on playing intimate clubs or on larger stages with the same love for music and his audience.”

For those who can’t make it out on Tuesday, be sure mark your calendar for Saturday, November 10, 2018. That is when you can take a little trip to the scenic Oriental, NC to take a pause for the cause and meet the Kohler’s, as the belt the blues to raise money for Pamlico Community College. They will perform from 4-7 pm at The New Village Brewery located on Broad Street. There will also be a silent auction, free pizza and great craft beer available at the cash bar.

Chasing Rain Clouds & Finding Festivals

Speaking of the blues, that is one thing that the sky wasn’t last Saturday as I rode around from one festival to another trying to escape the raindrops, which greeted me at all locations, until it was time to go to an indoor gig, of course.

Cape Carteret Fall Festival

Cape Carteret hosted their First Annual Fall Festival, which featured a variety of vendors, fall fun for the family and live music. The event was hosted at a town park and offering the live music. When I showed up was The Mad Fiddler, Jason Addams; and Davis Lott offering a variety of familiar favorites, including, “Witchy Woman,” a song that fits great in the fall. Also included in the show were a variety of original songs as well.

I have been wanting to see Addams perform for some time now. Being a fan of the fiddle, I have been interested in seeing his show since first hearing about him about a year ago. I will say, it was worth the wait, Addams has mad skills on the fiddle, hence his nickname the Mad Fiddler. When I first met Lott, it was many moons ago, when he was jamming with his other band project, Big Drink Music Company. Both music projects are great fun and worth checking out. The players are professional and fun and the music is familiar and rocking!

Second Helping rocks ENC Foof, Brews and QUE Fest in Kinston, NC

Upon leaving the Crystal Coast, I headed North and West and found my way to Kinston to check out the last leg of the ENC Food, Brews and QUE Festival which took place at Pearsons Park in Downtown Kinston, NC

Offering the music for the event were several familiar local acts. Opening the day was TrainWreck, who funked up the morning. New Bern’s Country crooner, Bryan Mayer rocked the stage next. The Wicked Shimmies are a Kinston based band, that offered the third fun set of rock and cool grooves. Closing out the day was the Lenoir based tribute band Second Helping, who is nationally known as the longest-running tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Of course, I showed up just in time to hear them do the sound check in the rain. Following a brief shower, they worked out all of the kinks and the band shut down the event with the Southern Rock favorites that fans love. Though the band is local, they perform mostly out-of-state. They have one more event on the calendar that is in our area.

You can take a pause for the cause and rock with the band at Fall Ball 19, taking place on Saturday, November 10, 2018. The Fall Ball is a fundraiser to benefit Edgewood Community School. The Fundraiser will kick off with the third annual wing and pig cook-off. There will be seven bands on the bill and all the good times you would like to have. This is a BYOB event, so pack your coolers and mark your calendars. Campers, RVs, and tents are welcome. The address for the Fall Ball is 750 Racetrack Rd., La Grange NC. The event starts at 11 am and runs until 10 pm.

Adam Hill Returns to The Brown Pelican

This past year, Second Helping hit the road with another area band. The Adam Hill Band joined them on several shows this past Summer. This offered Hill an opportunity to perform on bigger stages and in new areas.

Speaking of the Adam Hill Band, they were in New Bern last weekend, so following all of the festival fun, I headed back to town. On Saturday, the band returned to the Dirty Bird, aka The Brown Pelican, 411 Broad St., New Bern, NC. It was the first time the trio played there this year. It was a fun night rocking with the Lenoir County-based rock outfit.

This weekend they will be playing a private party. In the days ahead, the band will be busy rocking some big stages. Next Friday the band will be rocking Wilmington, when they perform at Bourbon St. S Front St., Wilmington, NC. Music plays from 9 pm till 1 am. On Saturday, November 3, they will be rocking Wish You Were Beer Tavern, Goldsboro, offering music from 9 pm till midnight. The following week they will be on the road and rocking them in Clayton on Friday, November 9 and in Raleigh on Saturday, November 10, 2018. Sharing the stage both nights with other great rocking acts. Please see details below!

Bryan Mayer Warms ‘Em Up at Noon

Opening up the show under the Miller Lite Beer Tent located on Craven and South Front Sts. for day two of MumFest 2018 was New Bern’s beloved singer-songwriter, once known to the local area as Stretch. He climbed the country charts and became better known to everyone as Bryan Mayer.

This hometown artist is a class act with grace and talent when on stage. Besides offering any number of classic and modern-day country songs, he offers tales of his time on stage with many of the artist’s he covers. Beyond all country favorites, the tall New Bern native has some blues in his soul and he can rock you some too!

Bryan Mayer stays busy offering his music to the people locally and on the road throughout the year. In fact, today he has two shows. This afternoon he will be rocking a stage in Downtown Kinston, NC for the ENC Brew n QUE Festival at Pearsons Park. Be on hand to rock with Mayer at 1:30 pm. Joe Baes Project

Joe Baes Project Rocks ‘Em Through the Afternoon

For those that love a good mix of rock and original music, a familiar favorite for fun alternative rock n good times is the New Bern based, Joe Baes Project. The trio rocked under the tent in the middle of the afternoon. Offering rock, grunge, and familiar pop hits to the crowd of festival gatherers, fans and friends.

This past year, the trio has changed dynamics with the bass player and founding member and songwriter Mike Galloway, moving away. Coming on board to fill the position of rhythm maker is Danny Taylor. Still offering the lead on vocals and guitar is Joe Baes and rocking the kit is Jonathan Toler on drums and vocals.

Strung Together Makes For A #NewBernStrong MumFest Finish

Closing out the weekend-long festival on the Miller-Lite Stage was New Bern’s own Family Band, Strung Together, featuring the Oliver Family. This was the perfect end to a healing weekend for our beloved little town that was so fractured by Florence. Not only did it devastated the downtown waterfront area, but it also took out businesses and historic homes alike. One of the homes she tried to wash away is Oliver’s home on E Front Street.

I found it to be mindful and moving to see this band closing out a great weekend of solid repair, following so many weeks of despair for everyone.

This family band is unique in they are mostly related and offer a great mix of genres by way of a host of instruments. They offer everything from pop, jazz standards, folk songs, country and bluegrass selections mixed in with their own songs. As the family rebuilds their home, they will keep busy with music and let the healing happen as they play for the fun of making music and memories.

Coming up next month they have a couple of great community shows. On Saturday, November 3, 2018, they will be AMPED UP at Jaycee Park in Morehead City and rocking the stage from 2-3 pm On Sunday, November 4, 2018; they will be back in town and taking part in Merci On Middle St. That performance is scheduled for 5:30 pm.

The BiPolar Express Rolls to the Beach to Rock

The New Bern born 80-90’s hair band, rock cover kings, The BiPolar Express took flight last weekend to rock fans at the Crystal Coast. They offered several solid sets of rock favorites to the crowd which gathered at The E-Club, located at 8102 Emerald Drive, Emerald Isle, NC.

A few days following the show, it was announced that the good times would continue for The BiPolar Express and their loyal passengers. 2019 is officially open for booking. Though the band considered winding down on dates and regrouping and revamping the set list, things changed after Florence flooded the rehearsal space where they once gathered. I would think more rock is just what the doctor would prescribe, so mark these dates on your calendar and make plans to climb aboard this rockin’ express!

On Saturday, October 27 they will be rocking Blackbeard’s Triple Play, 415 S Front St., New Bern, on November 10, taking part in rocking Homeless Veterans Benefit @ Farmer’s Market in New Bern NC and on Dec 21 they will return to The E Club in Emerald Isle, NC.

Second Helping Rocks Kinston, NC

At the start of the month, I was invited to The Red Room to check out the longest running Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Act on the scene, Second Helping. Though the band is locally based with most of the members being Lenoir County residents, they spend most of their time touring the country offering the songs made famous by one of the best-known bands in Southern Rock history.

This ten piece band is quite an act for any sound company to manage. With Three guitars, three harmony vocals, a bass guitar, drums, keyboard/piano, and one lead vocalist, this band is no small operation. Most impressive, once everything is plugged into the right channel of the board, they always provide an awesome tribute to the band with a great legacy in music history, Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Second Helping

For those interested in rocking with the band, you are invited to join them this afternoon at Pearsons Park, when they close out the ENC Brews n QUE event in Downtown Kinston, NC. They take the stage at 5:30 pm to deliver the closing set of the event which opens today at 11 am with Train Wreck opening up the day. Bryan Mayer offers the second set at 1 pm and the Wicked Shimmies hit at 3 pm to offer the third performance on the day.

Tumbleweed is a folk band from Wilmington, NC fronted by three songwriters (Jordan Sutherland, Amanda King, and McKay Glasgow), multi-instrumentalists with a knack for musical composition and vocal harmony. The band recently acquired the multi-talented Ross “Raws” Page (percussion), Peter Boscaljon (bass) and Sam Bowman(electric guitar/piano). After over a year working in the studio to develop their sound, Tumbleweed put out their first album, ‘Little Yellow House’, on Bandcamp in August of 2018. The 11-track release explores relationships, loss, and self-discovery through the eyes of each songwriter. Tumbleweed was formed in March 2016 and has been featured in Wilmington’s Bourgie Nights Concert Series, Carolina Pine Music Festival and the Brooklyn Arts Center Singer-Songwriter Showcases.

Besides all of the great food, the 2018 Havelock Chili Festival will offer live entertainment. Saturday you can see the Havelock Community Band start things off at 10 am. The youth from the Center of Performing Arts will offer the mid-day entertainment at 1 pm. Tomorrow night you can hear The Jaywalkers, a band out of New Bern, NC, closing out the event 6-8 pm.

All funds raised will go to the Carteret County Public School Foundation, which will directly help the 620 students and 64 teachers who were displaced by the hurricane.

Last Weekend Music Was Made Near the River and Along the Coast

Music Rocks MumFest 2018

Last weekend, New Bern took a giant leap toward reclaiming normalcy when the town welcomed MumFest 2018; presented by Swiss Bear. It was a wonderful weekend-long event that featured a lot of music that filled our streets.

For the second year in a row, there was a tent set up on the corner of Middle and Broad Streets which welcomed music throughout the weekend. This tent was hosted by Riverside Chrysler Dodge Jeep. Many of the acts that I caught were acoustic and solo. The first entertainer I walked up on was John Williams from Greenville, NC, who was offering sounds to friends and fans. Offering sounds of popular folk acts and classic country stars, he can be found tonight jamming at Trollingwood Taproom and Brewery. Music starts at 8 pm.

Some of the other acts I caught at that location included Now or Never. This trio is an original outfit hailing from Beaufort, NC blends the talents of Tiffany Elaine and her music brothers, Steve Mehan on lead guitar and Fernando Rivera offering songwriting collaboration, vocals, and guitar. The band came to be as a result of many open mics and sharing music. The trio can be found hanging out together hosting open mics with Tiffany Elaine.

You can catch them all next week on Monday rocking Shortway Brewing Co., 230 Chatham Rd., Newport, NC. They will be hosting an open mic from 6-9 pm and collecting donations for hurricane relief. All jammers are welcome. Come have a taste of their freshly brewed beer and sing a little long. On Tuesday, they will do it again at Crystal Coast Brewing Company in Atlantic Beach. Music starts at 7 pm and all are welcome to jam!

Will Stovall was the youngest rocker I met throughout the weekend, offering his jams under the tent for the final two hours of the weekend-long event. This 17-year-old is a Greenville native also. He offered a wide variety of music that was popular before his time and he included songs of his own. That is always exciting, to hear new artists offering their own soul for listeners to keep! Second Marine Aircraft Wing Band Offers Two Performances

Second Marine Aircraft Wing Band offered two performances to the town on Sunday, October 14, 2018. They opened their 2 pm set with the big band and jazz selections to welcome the onlookers and fans. Their 3 pm set offered rock selections to keep the crowd rolling through the remainder of their afternoon. It was probably during that set when my favorite music moment of the weekend happened. It was the magic of the music and the moments that came together during the guitar solo during, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”

Miller Lite Tent Lines up Great Entertainment

On Saturday I was able to catch a couple of bands under the tent at the corner of Craven and S Front Streets. Inside the corner lot, there was food served, vendors and BEER! Under the tent were many tables and chairs for all to enjoy the music. On stage in the afternoon, I had the chance to enjoy the music of Waterloo Revival. This country band hails from Nashville, TN and delivers a variety of catchy originals. The band kicked off the opening concert on Friday night and returned to rock the stage under the tent for another set on Saturday, October 13. Before leaving town on Saturday night to find music along the coast, I also got to groove with Joe Brown and the Band. They offered a fun set of music for the people from 6-8 pm.

When we pick things up tomorrow we will head back under the tent to enjoy all of the music that closed out MumFest 2018. Come chill out with local favorites, Bryan Mayer, Joe Baes Project, and Strung Together.

Justin Castellano Serves Up the Sounds at Church St. Deli

On Saturday night I headed out of town to see what I could find for music along the coast. It was at my first stop that I found the crazy cool guitar extraordinaire, Justin Castellano offering his grooves to fans and friends at Church St Deli and Pub located at 99 W Church St., Swansboro, NC. Tonight the singer-songwriter will be jamming on the beach in Atlantic Beach when he gives his grooves to the folks at Idle Hour Biergarten. Music is offered in the sand from 6-9 pm. On Saturday the elegant stringer will offer music at Harrika’s Brew Haus in Cedar Point, NC offering tunes from 7-10 pm. Big Drink Trades Big Sounds at Trading Post

Popping over the bridges and checking things out in Emerald Isle, I ran into the fun grooves of Big Drink Music Company who were rocking the crowd at The Trading Post Southern Food and Spirits. On Saturday night it was a fun trio of rockers that hail from the Crystal Coast and enjoy cutting chords and banging out the beats. Will Baker offers vocals and guitar work, Jon Wood plays bass and offers vocals and Tony Johnston offers the backbeat on drums and sings! The band plays all of the fan favorites to make people dance while offering a great variety of music in every show! They also jam with guitarist Davis Lott who also sings.

William’s sound can be described as a mix of Blues, Soul, and Americana. His influences come from artists such as Jackson Browne, Eric Clapton, and Ray Lamontagne and he has played in bands such as ‘The Broadcast’ as well as ‘Rebekah Todd & The Odyssey’. The most current development will be the release of his debut solo album in 2019.

Emily Musolino is a Durham, NC native who mixes soulful vocals with shredding blues-rock guitar riffs. The depth of emotion in her voice is stunning and her songs have a classic sound and lyrics that tell compelling stories.
A Berklee College of Music graduate, Emily has opened for and collaborated with artists like Ani Difranco, Nikki Hill, Vinx, Shana Tucker, Anna Wise (SonnyMoon, Kendrick Lamar) and Eric Hirsh (The Beast, Orquesta GarDel). She is also the owner and head engineer at Blue Moose Recording Studio in Durham and Co-founder of the women’s music and arts collective Mama May I.
Emily released her newest album “The Vault” in April 2018.
Emily has been featured several times on NPR’s the State of Things with Frank Stasio and written up in the News and Observer. She currently fronts the Emily Musolino Band and plays 200+ shows a year, both bandleader and soloist around the world.

Tumbleweed is a folk band from Wilmington, NC fronted by three songwriters (Jordan Sutherland, Amanda King, and McKay Glasgow), multi-instrumentalists with a knack for musical composition and vocal harmony. The band recently acquired the multi-talented Ross “Raws” Page (percussion), Peter Boscaljon (bass) and Sam Bowman (electric guitar/piano). After over a year working in the studio to develop their sound, Tumbleweed put out their first album, ‘Little Yellow House’, on Bandcamp in August of 2018. The 11-track release explores relationships, loss, and self-discovery through the eyes of each songwriter. Tumbleweed was formed in March 2016 and has been featured in Wilmington’s Bourgie Nights Concert Series, Carolina Pine Music Festival and the Brooklyn Arts Center Singer-Songwriter Showcases.

The Dirty Bird Gets Back to Business

The Brown Pelican, 411 Broad St., returned to the music, one week following Florence. Marron Chaplin offered several sets of rocking sounds to ease the minds of the troubled town on Friday, September 21, 2018. The talented singer-songwriter is performing at the coast this morning. If you are near the coast check her out from 10 am til noon at the Beaufort Farmer’s Market!

Blackbeard’s Triple Play

Back In Action

Two weeks after the storm Blackbeard’s Triple Play, 415 S Front St. reopened for business. They celebrated the weekend with a trio of bands, that brought great music to help celebrate their return following the flood.

On Friday, September 28, 2018, they opened their doors and welcomed Mason Jar Bonfire to the stage outside. The Lenoir County-based band rocked us with southern rock and country selections. Following their three-hour set, music fans headed inside to keep the beats with Train Wreck! This party band has a long history of turning up the funk and rocking this town. For fans of the band, they are rocking AJ McMurphy’s, 1914 Turnbury Dr., Greenville, NC, tonight. Music starts at 9 pm. Come dance and enjoy the beats!

The BiPolar Express rolled into town and took a break from the new reality so to rock and celebrate life and living it. Bass player Wick Wickline and his family is just another example of survival and fortitude. The music maker learned before the gig that FEMA would probably be demolishing their home. The family lost everything and is working through the process of rebuilding.

Helping many with the process is finding this need for finding NORMAL! The prescription for Wickline and his bandmates is rocking it hard for music fans and supporters. For those looking to get rocked by the 80’s and 90’s rock cover band, you can find them rocking The E Club, 8102 Emerald Dr., Emerald Isle, NC, tonight. Music starts at 10 pm and they roll you into Sunday!

City Stage and Folks Journal Supporting NC Music

On Friday, September 28, 2018, Folks Journal hosted a great night of music at City Stage offering the sounds of Sometimes Lions featuring Asheville’s Holden Dixon. They performed a special night of original music with a few covers thrown in the mix.

The venue is serving up live entertainment and tasty treats on the regular. Come out any Tuesday through Saturday night after 5pm for entertainment, good food, and your favorite drinks!

Checking in with Our Local Solo Acts!

Two weeks after the storm it was easy to find music here there and everywhere in fact. I spent Friday, September 28 hopping and bopping, like I once did before the storm. I kicked things off in James City where I found Tommy Duzan Sr, jamming the tunes for fans and friends at BrÜtopia. When I crossed the bridge where the two rivers meet, I found a couple more local favorites rocking the night away. Rick Huff was giving his best to the fans and friends at The Brown Pelican. While Buck Loy offered the grooves to the folks that gathered at The Thirsty Bruin.

Open Mic Madness Resumes

Two weeks following the wrath of Florence, Tiffany Elaine and her music-making friends got back to doing what they love… sharing songs. The trio is known as Now or Never, features T Elaine on vocals, Fernando Rivera on guitar and vocals and Steve Mehan on guitar. They along with other friends gather several times throughout the week to enjoy the fun music and making it!

They got back to the action on Monday, September 24, 2018, at Shortway Brewing Co. They host the open mic there on the second and fourth Monday of each month starting at 6 pm. Walking into Week Three Post Flo We Rock with The Adam Hill Band

The Adam Hill Band weathered the storm well and have been busy rocking their sounds. Last week the band was the featured entertainment for the Beauty and the Beast 5th Annual Fall Car Show. The solid rock trio offered the music from midday until it was Awards time. The popular rock band will be heading to another hard-hit area to deliver their healing rock grooves tonight. You can catch them rocking tonight at Bourbon St., Wilmington. Music starts at 9 pm.

Getting Down Around Town

MumFest 2018 will be in full swing this weekend. Please take a pause for this wonderful town cause. Last night Swiss Bear Foundation and WRNS-FM hosted the annual Kickoff Concert. For the first time, the event was held at Lawsons Creek Park. This not only marks a first for Swiss Bear, but it also means another park is open for use in the beautiful river city!

Today marks one month since we were kissed by Florence. We deserve a break from the cleanup and we need to take time to support local businesses, which are key to making the town a vital place to live and for all to enjoy. When We Last Danced

By the grace of God, it’s time to get back to the music! When I last left you we just finished the second weekend of September and those along the coast of North and South Carolina started planning and then bracing for the devastating effects of Hurricane Florence. About this time a month ago she was barreling toward us and thankfully downgrading on her approach. After watching the news on Michael just last night, I am ever so grateful for the fact that Florence weakened her wrath unto us.

Though I have not been able to bring you a music blog, rest assured, I have been keeping the beats and am glad to be back sharing the news! I am here to assure you that, although the river is not always graceful and pretty… we as a community, however, are fierce and strong. With Florence now in our wake, we found out we are #NewBernStrong!

Music Coverage ~ Picking Up Where We Left Off

5th Annual Barn Bash For Promise Place

Bryan Mayer was the musical guest for The Fifth Annual Barn Bash. This event was the best yet for Promise Place, the non-profit organization who has been helping the community heal from sexual assault and abuse for decades. Located in New Bern, Promise Place serves Jones, Pamlico and Craven Counties. On Saturday, September 8, 2018, the Annual Fund Raiser took place on the Batten Farm. It offers guests and sponsors, a good meal, adult beverages, desserts for auction, live entertainment, raffles and a live auction all in the spirit of raising money for the non-profit that works hard in healing our community.

Bryan Mayer Always has Time for A Good Cause

I would meet Bryan Mayer again at the month’s end, when he was taking part in a Hurricane Relief Benefit on Sunday, September 30, 2018, at the Tackle Box Tavern in Atlantic Beach. This event offered relief to those along the Crystal Coast and Carteret County. The entire area has been devastated and is rebuilding from the wrath of Florence. There are many events in the works to bring aid and assist with relief. As we get back to the music coverage more regularly, I look forward to talking about events that help rebuild our area by way of music.

On this particular Sunday Funday, Bryan McCoury, Bryan Mayer and Davy Williamson offered music to those in attendance. There was a $5.00 donation paid at entry and raffles throughout the night. All the money raised went to rebuilding the local Atlantic Beach Community.

GEM Productions, Folks Journal, City Stage, the TinyTornado and Local Music Makers Join Together For the Celebration of Community

The first benefit I attended was actually in New Bern, on Friday, September 22, 2018, the community gathered for music, food, fellowship, and goodwill toward each other. We joined together for the purpose of bringing aid to the hard-hit area of New Bern, NC. Together we gathered at the City stage, 901 Pollock Street, not far from where our community has been most devastated. But the goodwill and kindness won’t be silenced in this town and the music will play on!

Opening the night was Caroline Tanner who was joined by her daughter Kira Vetters. Following their 30 minute set, Adam Hill offered another acoustic set under the tent. After the sun went down on a beautiful day, we saw our community come together on the spot to raise nearly $2600 in funds, offered food to nearly 500 hungry people and distribute cleaning supplies and other donated goods to people in need throughout the night.

It was a beautiful night, that was well orchestrated by the staples in our music community. Folks Journal’s staff were some of the first sets of boots on the ground after the storm and secured storage units, housing, lined up volunteers and did so much more in the first few weeks following the storm. Giving of themselves, even after they suffered major losses themselves.

Much is true of the cooks and music makers, promoters and more. We saw gathering to help the community. It was quite beautiful to watch the essence of God working in all of us! On stage inside the club were local talents. Big Jim Kohler Blues Band offered the opening set inside and The Hot Buttered Grits closed out the fun night of music and community celebration.

The reality of life in New Bern now is, that we talk about life as we know it after Florence. We are all walking about looking for the beats and striving to find our new normal. As for the bands that played, both had players that lost a lot in the flood. Some lost it all while others are recovering from only a few feet of surge. People all around us are recovering from a loss of work and loss of home. Many have lost it all, from cars, houses, boats, and businesses. This is a community on the mend like never before. But thanks to our awesome first responders, military personnel, volunteers and other trained specialists, as well as our small businesses and music community, we healing daily.

The stories of this storm are enough to flood any soul with emotion. Big Jim and Kathleen Kohler lost their home to Irene in 2011. After 5 years of waiting for the process, they moved into their raised house and evacuated when Florence came calling. After all, things were assessed the family returned to learned they lost the contents of their garage, and all of their floors need to be replaced. Once again the heartache and the blues meet the Kohlers at River Bend. They take it with a smile and play the blues for others.

Vocalist, guitarist, and mandolin jammer for the Hot Buttered Grits, Seth Smith, and his family lost their house to the rage of Florence. Grits drummer Zack Meadows also saw water rise in his home a few feet, “Just enough to make a mess, ya know.” he said when we spoke! “We are blessed, when you hear how people have lost it all, it’s truly sad.”

Local DJ on the scene and local music promoter Parker Millar and his girlfriend lost their vehicles on the return home from Asheville. They got caught in a flash flood on the way home and lost most of the things they were trying to save during the evacuation, as well as their cars. Luckily first responders arrived on sight to rescue the pair. Millar recently started work with our local news station and radio outfit that was flooded during Florence. When I tell you that the people we know are hurting, I promise you it is not an exaggeration. Some days there are no words for the exhaustion and sadness.

Big hearts like Grant Golden, Bailey Evans, Meg Wetherington, Leigh-Anne Sullivan, Tank Wetherington, Joshua Storts, Chris Strange, Patrick Edwards, Nichole Kirch and many many more are true examples of why this city has a heartbeat big enough for the world to feel…I applaud and thank you all. I look forward to working with all of you on many more benefits in the days ahead as we rebuild.

Throughout the weeks we will catch up with the music makers and share the stories. We will take part in celebrations of recovery and healing, and we will raise funds with the fun of music and fellowship. Thank you for still being here and dancing with me! I have missed you much!

Tonight the city of New Bern prepares for MumFest 2018. The Swiss Bear Foundation welcomes WRNS FM and country act DAN & SHAY who will close out the night on stage at Lawson Creek Park. Gates open today at 4:30 pm. Tickets are $30.00 at the gate. The good news is that proceeds for this event go to support relief efforts in our community. Another offering of brightness, this means that one more park is opening for use and one more big event is on the way to return to our area. Come out and unwind while enjoying the music of Buck Loy and Bruce Lynch offering tunes from 7-10 pm. On Saturday night, you are invited back to rock with Gary Dudley and the Maxxtones, offering the classic rock beats you know and love from 8-11 pm.

New Bern’s newest venue City Stage offers a night of Paul Simon Music, with singer John Van Dyke and friends they will present the music of popular singer-songwriter Paul Simon. Spanning the decades from the early Art Garfunkel collaborations, to the memorable classics of his solo career. If you are a fan of Paul Simon’s music, you won’t want to miss this special encore concert. Music starts at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $15.00. On Saturday night, the New Bern based Caffeinated Soul Boogie will be offering the sounds from 8-11 pm. Tickets are $7.00.

Cruising The Coast

Sadly the waterfront took a hard hit with the fierce winds and flood surge of Florence. They were not able to rebound in enough in time to welcome their Annual Fall event, The NC Seafood Festival. It is understandable when you consider the amount of damage sustained by many businesses which are still out of commission and on the mend.

Checking things out along the Crystal Coast, Off the Hook is open for business. The restaurant’s owner, chef and manager Charlie Weatherby wants you to know, that he has a banquet room to host your private affair. If you had plans to host an event and the venue is rebuilding, call Off the Hook to schedule an appointment to book your affair. You can enjoy music each Saturday from 10 pm until closing. The Cru Bar and Wine Store/ Beaufort Coffee Shop has been back in action since a week following Florence. Checking out their music schedule starting with tonight, will offer Davis Lott & The Mad Fiddler this talented duo will be rocking the stage from 8:30-11:30 pm. Saturday night offers the music of Dick Knight with sounds being served from 8-11 pm. The show is free and tips are encouraged. Looking ahead, the host Open Mic Night with Tiffany Elaine and Friends on the First and Third Tuesday of each month, Come out this week and sing your new song and jam. Sign up starting at 7 pm and music will be playing from 8-11 pm.
