On The Scene With Tracey Stones

It was another fun week that got logged in the books, with music made memories, complete with good friends. Above from left to right, music appreciators Mary Spruill, Tracey Stones, and April Sunshine enjoy Blues Night at The Brown Pelican.

Rolling Thru the Week We Jam The Blues A Time Or Two

Blues at The Brown

Have you noticed that the week starts out better when you get to greet your Monday night with a serious dose of blues? My disposition on the week ahead has improved significantly since Heather Haiss, owner of The Brown Pelican took my recommendation to open the week with a blues jam.

Big Jim Kohler Blues Band hosts the night of music that kicks off at 7 pm and offers two hours of glorious, non-stop guitar action. Opening the first hour is the house band featuring the not so Big Jim on guitar and vocals, Chris Buttitta on the bass and Tom Parker sitting behind the kit. Following a fine set of Chicago style blues the floor opens to jammers.

Last week we were witness to the young marine guitar slinger John R Williams, showing off his moves and Phillip Alcock joined in on bass, with regular jammer Jonathan Peck gracing the stage as well. Closing out the night on vocals was Charlie Duzan, who took us out of the Bern and brought us to “Kansas City!” I can’t wait to see where we go this week.

Wednesday Is Worse, UnTil the Music Plays

If Stormy Monday Blues don’t do a thing for you, then make it a happy hump day by bringing your butt to the City Stage New Bern for another round a jamming blues music with Big Jim Kohler and Friends. This free blues jam is also offered from 7-9 pm and welcomes another fun bunch of players to the stage.

Last week while I was in the house I enjoyed the delightful sounds of Mrs. Big Jim, who sings beautifully to the backing band. Simon Spalding quite often offers the electric fiddle, David Sawyer joined in on harmonica and Jonathan Peck offered some guitar parts.  The fun happens again this week and this is your open invitation for you to join us.

Thursday is Seamlessly Thrilling

Nicholas William Bailey Returns to Ratty’s

The first time I met Nicholas Bailey I was quite taken by his unique offerings of seamless streaming of guitar phrases. It was early in March and not long after Captain Ratty’s Seafood & Steakhouse started hosting live music upstairs in their piano bar. That night I only stayed for a snippet of sounds, but this week I returned for the full course set, to fill up on his mastery.

I have to tell you that throughout my time in his company, with all the setting up, ordering my meal, eating and paying my tab, it was one beautiful guitar verse leading into the other, with only one stop to answer a quick question from a tipping admirer and another quick stop to ask me what I would like to hear. I was thrilled to hear him offer “Gimme Shelter” again, in my honor.

To get a better understanding of this graceful guitar players essence and skill, come enjoy a great meal at Sara’s Big Apple on Saturday, June 15 to get a taste of his talent. He will be sharing sounds from 6-8 pm.

Strung Together on Deck at Persimmons

Our local family band has had me on my toes and tapping to their beats from New Bern to Beaufort this week. It all started on the deck at Persimmons Restaurant, when the full band was together to play to the dinner crowd that gathered.

I wanted to stop in to see this fun, festive, folk-infused pop band, to have an updated picture to promote them for their appearance on Saturday’s bill at The Beaufort Music Festival. More on that show below.

Getting back to the musical family that our town has adopted, you can find them together again on stage and on the deck at Persimmons Restaurant twice next month before the family breaks for camp and gets set for college life this Summer.

Those dates are on the books for Thursdays, June 6 and 13. They offer live music to accompany dinner from 7:30-9:30 pm under the stars, beside the water. Be sure to save the dates and come out and dance!

Friday Features A Festival In Beaufort

Tan & Sober Delights

It was my goal to get to Beaufort in time to check out The Tan and Sober Gentlemen. I met my goal of getting there in time, however, I did not plan for locking my keys in the car at the start of my work night. Nonetheless, I managed to do just that, which kept me busy bopping to their new grass beats near the perimeter of my car.

But as luck would have It, I mentioned my dismay to a tan and sober gentleman who returned moments later with a long enough wire to unlock the vehicle. When he approached me originally, I was trying desperately to unlock the truck with my antenna which was not nearly long enough. Two minutes after the debacle I was stage side and remembering why I loved this band so much.

They are the epitome of a fun festival band. They never fail to get the crowd up on their feet and moving to the grooves of their Newgrass roots music. When I first met the band they were rocking a festival in New Bern a few years back, this year they brought their best blazing bluegrass to Beaufort.

℘℘℘℘

Stop Light Observations Rock The Grooves

Following a festive set of awakened bluegrass came the revival of young rockers, a band from South Carolina known as Stop Light Observations. My first observation of this band was the young energy on stage and a spirit that threatens to keep indie rock alive and well. Very original and completely rocking this band has great appeal and presence on stage.

Stop Light Observations is a popular band from the Charleston region of the Southern Carolina state! They are made up of the combination of talents courtesy of Will Blackburn on lead vocalsCubby who is the master songwriter, piano player, synth sounder, vocalist, Louis Duffie bouncing on the bass and Luke Withers on drums.

No BS Brass Headlines Friday Beaufort Music Festival

Nothing like a 13 piece brass band fronted by one mighty vocalist to leave the soul soothed! That is how the organizers left it with festival goers on Friday night when they welcomed the Richmond Va based outfit NO BS! Brass Band to close things out.

They really are a fun and funky band that can cover the classic rockers as good as the pop artists we loved in the ’80s. Before closing things out on Friday night, they had everyone on their feet and moving to their groove. Be sure to visit them on Facebook and follow their website: http://www.nobsbrass.com

Saturday’s Sweet Treats

Back In Beaufort… Qualian Opens the Day

The Raleigh based Qualian is a five-piece, indie/alternative band formed by students and friends that have played together since childhood. In their last five years together they have released two EP’s. The energetic rockers opened day two of the 31st Annual Beaufort Music Festival.

At the helm of this project, we met Walker Renfrow the lead vocalist. Supporting his vocals are Aidan Kelly on bass and guitar, Lee Sullivan offering guitar,  keys, and saxophone. Baylor Wordsworth plays guitar and bass and Gray Renfrow sits behind the kit.

I found it refreshing to see so many talented youths take to the stage over the weekend. It rejoices my spirit every time I get to hear new blood make fun music

New Bern Treasures Found @ Coastal Music Festival

Strung Together and Their Adopted Son Danny

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Then next came New Bern’s first offering with the family band Strung Together. They started things off with George Oliver opening things up with the public adoption of their good friend Danny Batten, who filled in on guitar for their middle child Abigail Oliver. Following the quick and informal adoption, the band got busy sharing popular songs done with their unique twist of talent and style!

Included in there set were many familiar and popular tunes as well as some classics made famous by the amazing team of Carter and Cash. The band actually offered a show for the At The Gallery Series this winter, featuring the music of Carter Cash. The event was so successful the Oliver’s have decided to offer it our town again.

This time it will serve as a fundraiser for The New Bern Civic Theater. The event will take place on stage at the theater it will help support on Saturday, June 7, 2019, and for more info follow this link:  The Cash & Carter Tribute Show. Before that, the band will return to Beaufort for a show next Saturday at The Beaufort Farmer’s Market. Music plays from 10 am – 12 pm.

℘℘℘℘

Followed by a Serving of Hot Buttered Grits

The next serving of New Bern based talent came courtesy of our friendly Jam Band The Hot Buttered Grits. This band has been a music staple to the delight of fans for nearly 15 years. They have a great time coming together for the sake of sharing music and that is evident in the sounds they share.

In the heat of the day, this five-piece groove group gave the crowd blistering original beats to keep them grooving in the sunshine of their love! It was a fun and awesome display of New Bern grooves for the Crystal Coast to enjoy!

Bringing It Back to the Bern ~ And Bridge To Breakdown

DeadHeadz MC Host Anniversary Party

img_7397-1

The Dead Headz MC hosted their Anniversary Party last evening and on the bill for entertainment was one of NC’s best rock bands in the Downeast region, Bridge to Breakdown. The MC has a clubhouse located in New Bern and yesterday all were welcome to rock!

The rock quartet comes together on the combined energies of Talyn Detmers fronting the effort with a Morrison flavor, swapping leads with
Malcolm Matthews. Both players offer crushing guitar leads and searing vocals, Taylor Cefalo keeps it tight behind the kit on drums and newest to the line-up on bass is Ethan Goecke.

They are badass rockers who get the job done right every time. This was about my sixth time seeing them and I am sure they get better with each live show. Here is an original snippet offered last night under the tent!

Before leaving, I learned from my editor the band was to be hired by a few other bike clubs that attended the function. If you are in need of an original, fun and rocking band for your next party be sure to consider Bridge to Breakdown. They will not disappoint!

Roaming Around Town for the Final Four

Caffeinated Soul Boogie at BrÜtopia

I was looking forward to hearing Caffeinated Soul Boogie last night, as I knew they were swapping chops with a new bass player. The band recently welcomed Daniel Baker to the line-up and last night was his debut with the band.

The band came together as a result of the father, Derrick Moore on guitar and his daughter Daria Yeager vocals, showing up at coffee houses and open mic nights. The duo grew into a full-fledged band with time and now they are a force to be reckoned with. They just get better with each performance and Yeager’s vocals more captivating and blissful. Filling out the sound on drums is rhythm man Tanner Bright, who has been keeping time here for more than a year.

Last night the band offered an impressive performance for fans and friends that gathered at BrÜtopia in James City.

Anyone interested in keeping the beats with this fun and talented band should check out their website. That is where you can find all of the latest news and their show schedule.

Joe Baes Project Rocks The Garage

Another local band that never disappoints is The Joe Baes Project. They were rocking the crowd that gathered last night in the back of The Garage. This new venue has been making improvements to the establishment since opening its doors a few months ago. Last week they started the work of building a stage and this week the mission was complete… Joe Baes and the boys rocked it!

Last night it was the common core trio on stage and entertaining their lively and enthusiastic crowd. Besides offering great music the band is also known for keeping the crowd involved with games and other good times.

Before long the boys will be heading to the Crystal Coast. Their next show is slated for June 1, 2019, when they take things to The Trading Post: Southern Food and Spirits. That will be an early show, with music being offered from 6-9 pm. To keep up to date with this band find them on Facebook: The Joe Baes Project.

℘℘℘℘

Chuck Phillips Brings His Ba…

It was rumored the solo acoustic slinger Chuck Phillips was coming to town with his full band, but when I got town I found Phillips banging out riffs on his six-string to the back-beat of the bass offered by Sonny Fields.

It seems things went astray for the drummer that was expected to make the show. Something about too much weekend. Not letting small details like a drummer derail the plan of entertaining the crowd, Phillips made the best of things and offered a great show in a duo formation.

The singer-songwriter hails from Washington NC and keeps busy playing the entire Downeast region. Anyone interested in learning more about this talented stringer, be sure to find him on Facebook:

℘℘℘℘

Gary Dudley & The Maxxtones Take Us Out

Closing things out with a serious shot of classic rock n roll, I ran into Gary Dudley and The Maxxtones, who was rocking the deck at Blackbeard’s Triple Play Restaurant last night. Dudley is a gifted guitar player that learned his craft decades ago and still finds a way to attract new fans. Last night he grabbed the attention of a few young college fellows that could not get over the magnitude of his talent.

Always fun and rocking, this band is based along the Crystal Coast and rocks throughout the region. In fact, next week Dudley and Co will headline the Silo Palooza at The Silos Restaurant in Oriental. This one-day music festival is an Oriental tradition, featuring the hottest bands in our area. The event will go down next weekend, on Saturday, May 25th. Mark the calendar for Saturday and make plans to be there for a full day of rocking fun from Peace Soldier to The Maxxtones the day is full of rockin’ good fun and music.

Highlighting New Bern Acts On The Festival Circuit This Weekend And More

79a3c574712f4ba574f2220a5ef4451d

This Music Business, Class Is In!

Never underestimate the power of good goal setting plans. Be as methodical in your plans as you are in your practice. Setting small goals and meeting targets is critical to growth and development. Start simple after you have your band together. Commit to meeting twice a week. One session will be used for songwriting and business development. The follow-up session will be used as a rehearsal.

Set daily, weekly and monthly goals to strive for. As long as you have something to chase you will stay on task with moving forward. It can be simple stuff, like today… I am going to call four clubs to make an introduction. This week I will send 10 emails or messages to clubs or festival organizers to introduce our band. This month we are going to add four new songs to the set-list.

Successful bands are polished and up on their game. They keep things current and evolving so that their fan base grows with each show. This can all be achieved with the simple first step of setting goals and actively working towards them. What goals will you set for yourself and your band this week?  CLASS DISMISSED!

Strung Together

IMG_5708 (3)

New Bern’s famed family band Strung Together, will take to the stage this afternoon at 1 pm to offer a diverse set of pop, folk-infused fun music that will have your toes tapping and hips shaking!

I recently caught the band during their dinner performance on the deck at Persimmons Waterfront Restaurant. It’s been a great journey watching the Olivers as they raise their family on stages right before our eyes. They are a fun and refreshing band, offering good grooves and uplifting beats for all to enjoy!

IMG_5712 (2).JPG

At the helm we find the talented Dad George Oliver on banjo and vocals, his wife Dare offers vocals on many selections. Their three children also take lead roles in the outfit from time to time. Oldest daughter Catherine plays the upright bass, ukelele, and vocals. The middle daughter Abigail plays the guitar and sings and their youngest offspring Mason plays the piano and guitar. Joining the band on fiddle is Addy Quinn and helping fill the sound on drums is  Nick Eickhoff.

IMG_5706 (2).jpg

Today the band will be the first band to take the second stage at the 31st Annual Beaufort Music Festival. Be on hand to shake your hips today at 1 pm. This event has vendors to visit and two stages for live music.

Bryan Mayer Music

Ayden BBQ Cook-off and festival

The final New Bern talent I wish to highlight today is the headliner at The Ayden BBQ Cook-off and Festival. Bryan Mayer started making a name for himself on the country music scene more than five years ago with the release of his single “This Is Me.” Since then, the country crooner has shared stages with rock and country royalty while touring the land.

IMG_5348

Currently the lead singer, tall on talent, is featuring a new line up behind him. Joining the band on guitar is John Coltrane and sitting behind the drums and offering backing vocals is Victor Speight Jr. Still holding down the bottom is bass player of the year, Mike Sandvig.

Today’s event will bring the band to the forefront for their first public display. It was just last week that Mayer closed the curtain on the band he worked with for the past six years. I was on had to watch them as they finished that chapter of their lives. Here is the band offering the follow up to “This Is Me.” Here is Mayer’s song, “Closer To You!”

Looking Back at the Week of Fun Plus a Look Ahead

Behind The Scene With Tracey Stones

Looking back at the week, there was a lot of music that I found and guess what? There is a lot ahead too!

Rehearsal with the new Bryan Mayer Band

I started the week out with logging some rehearsal time with the new line-up for the Bryan Mayer Band. This past weekend marked an end of an era for the band and the country crooner is getting ready to bring a new show to light with a new guitarist and drummer joining the ranks.

The next gig for the band will feature Victor Speight Jr on drums and John Coltrane manipulating the electric six string. Holding down the bottom is a bass man of the year, Mike Sandvig. Namesake and leader, Bryan Mayer acknowledged that 2019 has been a weird year for him. He was rather comfortable with his line up but like with all things, change sets in and directions turn. After nearly five years with the same group, it’s a period of transition for the local country singing star.

Though they can only fit one practice in per week, the players have been getting comfortable with each other for the past several weeks as they get ready to make their debut at next week’s Ayden BBQ Cook-off and Festival. That will be on Saturday night at 7 pm.

Bryan Mayer Band – Crazy In Love

Currently, the band is a part of a Facebook Competition for the song “Crazy In Love.” This new release is nominated for Song of The Year.  To cast your vote, follow the link dated May 1, ask to join the group and then cast your vote. May 1 at 10:21 AM.

Monday Evening Blues Fix

One of my favorite nights around New Bern is Monday night. That is when Big Jim Kohler brings his blues to The Brown Pelican, to offer the great Chicago style blues we all know and love. Music is offered each week from 7-9 pm.  Be sure to come out and support it soon. This is a great night for blues fans and jammers too.

A New Open Mic Night on the Links

Speaking of jams, I attended a new open mic last week. KClub at Brandywine Golf and Country Club in Morehead City now offers an open mic twice a month. Hosted by the lovely and talented Tiffany Elaine, all are welcome to attend. This club is open to the public and offers cold, beer, wine, delicious food and now live music too. All are invited to come out to see what’s new and exciting at the links this Spring and Summer season!

All Are Welcome

While in attendance for the debut, I was able to catch a few awesome stringers and singers. First up was Fernando Rivera offering his own vibe to the mix. Following his three-song set came Steve Mehan, who started out with a fine blues instrumental, one he thought would work well with some horns. Speaking of horns, next up came the fresh young talented Dakota Nyman who offered a smooth jazz set.

While I was in the house, I also had the pleasure to hear from Stephen Poole and Ashton Ward, they are both powerful voices becoming known along the Crystal Coast. Both crooners have strong country persuasion but offer some pop and rock tunes too.

Before heading back to town I was also able to enjoy a short set by the trio Now or Never. The trio came about as result of these open mics, being hosted by the singer Tiffany Elaine. Teaming up with two guitarists this trio has three songwriters too. The chemistry is great and that is captured in the essence of their music.

This week Tiffany will host Open Mic nights at Shortway Brewing Co. tomorrow with music starting at 6-9 pm. On Tuesday the crew heads to Cru Bar & Wine Store/ The Beaufort Coffee Shop for more fun from 8-11 pm. On Wednesday catch the gang at The Carolina Wine Mixer offer an open stage to share songs from 7-10 pm each week.

Honky Tonk Tuesday

When I got back in the area I stopped in at The Brown Pelican to see what was happening. I got to enjoy a few jams by Charlie Duzan, who was offering the vibes to Honky Tonk Tuesday, a fairly new feature each week at the Dirty Bird. Music plays from 7-9 pm and all country players are welcome to come out and jam.

Soulful Sounds Fill My Soul On Thursday

The elegant and popular singer Alisa Mike has had a standing gig at  City Stage New Bern, since they opened their doors nearly a year ago. In fact, Mike was the first performer to welcome attendees to the new club and she offered the crowd her debut record, a self-titled disc with so many standards we love to hear her sing. Since then, Mike has enjoyed the dinner crowd that delights in her show each week. For anyone interested in catching this fine weekly offering, come out any Thursday from 7-9 pm.

Castellano Comes to New Bern

Justin Castellano is always entertaining to take in. I caught up with the talented act on Friday night when he graced New Bern with his talent. He offered his fans and friends at BrÜtopia a fun show on Friday night. One of the things I love about this cat is the fact that he is a gear junkie and technology nerd. These combined traits always give the singer something new to talk about.

For those looking to catch this skilled player soon, you can find him on the weekend in Swansboro, NC. On Friday and Saturday nights he will be offering music to those that gather at  The Boro Restaurant & Bar. Music is offered from 8-11 pm both nights. On Sunday you can hear him offering brunch music to those that come out to Church Street Deli, Pub, & InnLive music plays from 12-2 pm.

For anyone who can’t make those shows but wishes to keep up with this talented stringer, be sure to visit his website at https://justincguitar.com

To get a taste of how talented and crazy good this stringer is, be sure to check out some of his awesome music. Here is one of my favorites:

Justin Castellano Music

Country Courtesy of Ryan Cain & Jimmy Kennedy

For the next stop, I found Ryan Cain and Jimmy Kennedy II sharing songs in the backyard of The Garage. This new family-friendly bar is located in James City and offers games for the kids and cold beer for the parents. They are making upgrades each week and soon we will have a stage in the backyard.

The Mad Fiddler Returned TO BEAR CITY TO PLAY THE PELICAN

Jason Addams is better known to this world as The Mad Fiddler, and for good reason. This talented singer and stringer is a true one-man band that offers a great mix of popular songs that many know and love. What is most unique is the way he offers those familiar songs. With a wild-eyed edge, Addams is dramatic in his delivery of the energetic songs that he offers to those that sit before him.

Many that were in the house had not seen the wonder of the Mad Fiddler and he was delighting all that I spoke with. Many had asked if I have ever seen him. Fact is, I have had my eye on his madness since I caught a clip of it on Facebook three years ago. I finally met the talented player last year at an outdoor community celebration in Cape Carteret. Since then I have enjoyed several offerings.

To keep up with the madness, be sure to become friends with Jason Addams on Facebook.

Last Call For Current Rotation

Turning our attention back to the start of this blog, I mention Bryan Mayer was working things out with a couple of new players as his current drummer and manager, Shawn Mitchell makes a break for the bass and heads to work with RT Johnson. Also pulling out to take on more corporate responsibilities is Keith Salyards, who has been offering the electric strings for the past 5 years for the country crooner, tall on talent.

Looking ahead, the new band will make their debut next Saturday, May 18, 2019, at The Ayden BBQ Cook-Off and Festival. Music starts at 7 pm.

For fans and friends of the band be sure to check out the band on Facebook at Bryan Mayer or check out his website by visiting  https://www.bryanmayermusic.com/

Singing and Dancing at Jams Throughout the Week

This Music Business… Class Is In

I have been in business for myself for as long as I have called Carolina my home! I am dedicated to the cause of connecting people to live music so to support the scene!

Band Business Development

Once you decide that you are going to approach your band like a business, the next step is to figure out what your needs are so that you know how much you need to earn to meet those needs. Many performers forget a few key expenses in this equation. The biggest might be forgetting to charge a reasonable hourly rate for their time.

The time equation is very important since there is more to this than most people see. When accounting for your time, you have to charge something for your road time, office time, as well as the performance. The other thing you need to add into to the mix of the expenses, beyond the cost of your equipment, is the cost of maintaining that equipment as well. Plus don’t forget the essentials that also add up like strings, picks, batteries, tune-ups and more.

All Aboard this Crazy Train!

Now then, once you account for what you need and what you need to charge to meet your needs, you then have to establish how many other people will this project support. Remember, everyone who is on board is in the same boat and their needs are just as important to the equation. So take the time to add up how much time is vested in the project per player and find out what the total needs are. Do not let that bottom line scare you. It is important to see that nuts and bolts of the operation on paper. It is the first step in setting your financial goals.

Always Set Goals and Assign Roles

As mentioned in yesterday’s blog, this endeavor is always a team effort. Even if you are a solo act, you need a team to carry you to the next level. Many serious players often fall back on the solo gig because running the business parts of the operation become easier to manage when flying solo. Many bands mates tend to forget or get sidetracked after the plans of going full time are initiated. It is important to keep on task and meet often, so that all the team members are on the same page. Communication is key to the success of this operation.

How? Who? How Much? To Who?

Here are some important discussions to have. Will the band be self-managed? Will they do in house promotions only? Who will pick up the cost of promotional items, such as an EPK for the band? These are all important conversations that serve bands better when discussed upfront. Don’t be afraid to discuss the money portion of this job, if that is what you intend for your project to be. And everyone must be accountable for their positions. The more you meet and plan for your success, the more likely you will reach your goals. These meetings can be held during rehearsal. If the band does not rehearse, it might be wise to secure day jobs as well for the brightest outcome! CLASS DISMISSED!

Tuesday Offered A Mix Bag At Open Mic in Beaufort

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

It is always a great time when I attend the Cru Bar & Wine Store/Beaufort Coffee Shop’s open mic, which is hosted by the lovely and talented Tiffany Elaine. The singer-songwriter does so much to support live and local music along the Crystal Coast where she roams.

For many months she has been hosting open mic on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. But last week the entertainer added a couple of new open mics added to the regular itinerary, and will now be offering open mic at Cru on the opposing weeks. Which mean she will be there again this Tuesday, promoting the many that come out to support her.

I always get to meet new players at this open mic at the Crystal Coast. Located in Beaufort, NC we meet tourists and newly relocated souls seeking out like-minded, music sharing folks to share time and songs with. Last week was no exception, as we met a few travelers and many locals jammers too. The open mic starts at 8 pm and all are welcome to perform. Each act is allowed three songs or 15 minutes under the bright lights.

Talent Unleashed

This week I had the pleasure of listening to Steve Mehan open the night with his original works. Mehan is a part of Elaine’s band Now or Never and just one of the talents songwriters that is a part of that union. Next up was Jimbo followed by Fernando Rivera, who shared some pieces of his soul. Empty Baggies offered a drug-infused set while Now or Never uplifted the spirits of listeners. Ashton Ward graced our stage and John Durham also got a shot at sharing the stage. Closing out the night was the fun band Smoke n Oakem! A couple of players from that band offered a shot of solo works, as well they included sax man Dakota Newman and bass man Hank who shreds notes on a six-string also.

Tiffany’s Corner

Tiffany Elaine has added two new open mic nights to her monthly calendar. First up she announced “Guys! We have a new place to jam on the Tuesdays we aren’t at Cru! Come check out the K Club at Brandywine Bay in Morehead City, NC.  It’s absolutely gorgeous, they have great food and great drink prices. See you on May 7!” Also new in the mix is Open Mic Wednesdays At The Carolina Wine Mixer ! and that gets underway on May 8, 2019!

img_6062

When she is not hosting open mic nights she is booking and promoting her band Now or Never. Today the band has two gigs, including a show at Humphrey Farm at press time today and tonight it is Now Or Never & Tiffany Elaine @ Pour Haus Pub For Dogwood Fest Music starts at 10 pm. To keep up with her band visit their Facebook Page Now Or Never.

Wednesday Welcomed A Birthday Blues Jam

On Wednesday it was Big Jim and a Birthday celebration at The City Stage for our friend April Sunshine. The night included some great blues, good grooves, close friends and CUPCAKES! Homemade chocolate treats came courtesy of the camera-shy photographer that snapped the above picture of the birthday girl Deborah Shillito. This is another weekly offering that not only shares the traditions of that good blues music, but welcomes players to the stage to jam as well. Music plays from 7-9 pm each Wednesday at the City Stage, 901 B Pollock St., New Bern.

Thursday Kept Us Bouncing About Town

Mad Fiddling For Supper

The Mad Fiddler, Jason Addams was back in town and sharing songs with those that gathered in the Piano Bar upstairs at Captain Ratty’s Seafood and Steakhouse. They started offering live music each Thursday in February and it is a nice addition to the weekly music calendar. If you have been missing the music and you missed the Mad Fiddler, the good news is that there is live music offered each week and the talent of Addams is on display once a month for all to enjoy.  For those that can’t wait until next month, look for him this Thursday jamming tunes from 6-9 pm at Salty Turtle Beer Company

2019 Spring Fair Kicks Off with the Blues

Big Jim Kohler Band welcomed all those that come out to the opening night at the Craven Jaycees 2019 Spring Fair, at the Craven County Fairgrounds on Thursday evening. Gates opened at 6 pm and the music started at 7 pm. The fair is in town until next Sunday, May 5, 2019.

Last night they were going to host the popular local act Joe Brown and The Band, but that show was canceled due to inclement weather. Given that announcement, the band has been rescheduled for next Friday, May 3, 2019. Tickets are $5 at the gate and you can buy bands to ride the rides all day for just $20.00.

Back on My Big Jim Soapbox

We All Love Him!

Have you met my blues brother, Big Jim? This guy is the real deal when it comes to Chicago style blues and he has a long list of songs ready to share with his fans and friends. It has been quite a ride sitting shotgun on this blues journey with this talented slinger, who not only plays the blues but lives them out like a true champion. Jim Kohler moved to ENC in 2011 and just six weeks after settling in with his family they were greeted by the rise of Irene, a Hurrican that washed through their house and washed away most of their possessions. It took them five years to recover and along the way they worked out their sorrows by sharing music with their community. They are the first band to show up at any cause and they are often there donating their time.

We Nearly Lost Him

Before Florence was ever a consideration in our community’s story, there was another story that was penned about our cities blues father! In August 2017, Big Jim fell ill with pneumonia and nearly lost his life. In an effort to save his life and help him recover and heal. The skilled and professional team at Carolina East Medical Center placed Kohler in a coma, so that he could combat his addiction to alcohol. For anyone that remembers Big Jim near the end of that long relationship he openly had with beer and whiskey, it was not always pretty.

Let’s All Support Him For the Joy He Brings

Many things have changed since then, and throughout it all Big Jim has been sober and is now in better health than he has ever been in all the years he has called NC home. In fact, it was just Wednesday night that I overheard his bride talk about him being here for all of the many positive changes he has made. I will point out that behind it all, it is his family and music that keep this man going.

Having said that, I will also mention that music is how he makes his living. If he had a better product, it would not take long to send him back out on the road where he is destined to be. He cannot do that without your help. In February Big Jim fired up a Kickstarter campaign to get this new product recorded and manufactured. On Tuesday, this campaign will be shut down unless we come up with the still needed $1980 to press the play button on a new Big Jim disc!

For the last time, please reconsider and donate to the cause of keeping the blues alive. BIG JIM STYLE!

Come Back Tomorrow

I know I said I wanted to throw in the towel, but that is because I am so uncertain about how I will afford this build. After revealing my struggles I was met with an overwhelming about of support. Mostly emotional and some financial help as well! All of those that have helped me keep it together, THANK YOU! It has not been always easy, following the beats of my heart, but you all have made it worth the trip! In an effort to show you my commitment, I am going to offer three blogs each week as we continue to grow and expand this live music support circuit! When you return tomorrow, I will take share scenes from the weekend and give you the goods on where to find gigs in the week ahead!

And Just Like That, It was The Weekend Again But There is Always Some Fun To Be Had With Music

On The Scene With Tracey Stones

And just like that… it was the weekend again! Looking forward to sharing some good times with you all, as we bounce to the beats.

We Spent Some Time with Justin In the Garden on Thursday

On Thursday evening I headed to the coast with Mary Shine and our first stop was Carolina Home & Garden, located on Highway 24 in Newport. This place is fun for the whole family and offers something for everyone to enjoy! From the fountain and fish to the petting zoo, good food and cold beer…it is a great place to stop by for a few minutes to shop and browse, or come for an evening of entertainment any Thursday or Friday night n the Garden. Music plays from 6:30-9:30 pm and there is a $5.00 music charge. They always have a food truck on site and offer appetizers too for noshing.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

My favorite feature of all the Garden parties that I attend is the music of course. Justin Castellano is always a sweet treat to enjoy. He has such a unique style, that is sick with skill and talent. Castellano makes his guitar sing like few entertainers in our area do. He is a classically trained player with unbelievable chops. To check out his music and his schedule, please visit his website at www.justincguitar.com

Back In the City of Bears for Some Friday Night Fun

Tommy Duzan Offers Songs in James City

Tommy Duzan Sr is a skilled lifer. Music has been a part of this man’s journey from the start and he has made it a part of his future as well. Playing songs and sharing music is his favorite thing to do and it shows when he performs. Last night he was entertaining fans and friends that gathered at the Garage. This unique bar offers a fun reprieve for parents who wish to have a beer but don’t want to stay home or ditch the kids to do it. There is always good beer on tap and fun games for the kids to enjoy. Stop out and enjoy live music on Fridays from 7-10 pm.

Duzan can be heard sharing his songs all around town and beyond. He has been booking more dates and playing more shows outside of the area. He enjoys showing up at local jams and sharing the stage with like-minded players. Next week the rocker will be playing a gig with his father Charlie Duzan, for The New Bern Historical Society’s Heritage Home Tours. This year the Historical Society decided to include music on the back porch of the Attmore-Oliver House. To get your tickets for this two day, fun-filled event visit https://newbernhistorical.org/

Gene Gregory Comes for a Visit

Singer songwriter, Gene Gregory calls Wilmington home these days, but feels most comfortable on any stage that welcomes him. Last night the crooner was offering songs and sharing stories with new friends and old fans at Brütopia. While I was in the house he offered an original song which I captured for my YouTube page. For anyone interested in hearing “Moving On” it is a Gene Gregory original and now found on my Channel.

For friends and fans looking for the talented stringer, be sure to like his music page on Facebook and visit his Website today at http://www.gugogene.com. Tonight the singer will be working the scene closer to home, when he shares songs at Shuckin’ Shack Oyster Bar – Leland NC. Live music starts at 7 pm.

Big Jim Bangs His Blues Downtown

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Rocking the blues at the Brown Pelican last night was New Bern’s own blues ambassador Big Jim Kohler. Helping to fill in the beats and round out the sound last night was The General Mike Sandvig on Bass, Tom Parker on the drums and Lee Tibbetts on the Harmonica. Just when you didn’t things could get any better, they bring the angelic sounds of Kathy Kohler to slay souls with her captivating voice.

The Switch Swing Into Blackbeard’s and Bring the Party

On my way through town last night I stopped by Blackbeard’s Triple Play on South Front St to see how things were going with Switch last night.  As expected they were turning that little corner of the world upon its ear, with their fun party offerings. The dance floor was packed and the people were loving the beats, brought by these brothers and music friends. The Switch is a long-running party band fronted by two brothers. They always include the audience in the show and offer them the music that keeps them coming back for more.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Taking their name from their ability to switch things up this talented band always have fun up their sleeves. If you have not seen their show yet, you are missing a fun and good time. They play all the songs that make people want to dance and encourage all to do so. To meet up with Larry, Artie, Dave, and Michael tonight, you can pack up the coolers and head out the country. The band will be rocking the Stage at Roadies Road House, located on Highway 55 East in Seven Springs. Music starts at 10 pm and there is a music charge which pays the band. Admission is $20, but you will be packing coolers and bringing own beverages. To keep up with the guys on the internet, you can find them on Facebook at The Switch on Facebook.

Adam Hill Band Brings it To Triple Play for James City

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The nightcap of the evening came when I headed back over the bridge to catch The Adam Hill Band. They were the chosen band to kick off the music season at Triple Play Restaurant. Raw and captivating, this band is simply something for the eyes and ears to take in. Hill has a speed few players master and his voice is a match to his guitar talent. He is a musician’s musician. I have heard other guitar players threaten to go home and burn their guitars after watching Hill. But you know, instead they just take it all in and probably try to pull it off later at home. This is pretty much how the self-taught player got going himself. He would go to shows and watch his stepfather at an impressionable age and when they got home, Hill went to work on mimicking what he saw.

To keep up with Adam Hill and all of his music projects be sure to check out his website at www.adamhillmusic.net.

rickoLus (FL)
https://rickolus.bandcamp.com/album/american-backyard
He started a one man band, played run down bars with low ceilings. Played outdoor concerts, went on tour and cleared the Bone Zone. He played empty fields, full cemeteries, and bleating petting zoos. Writing songs on the spot, he dismantled guitars and deconstructed drum kits. He wrote “Youngster”, an album from an old man about the youth he spent and wasted away on cigarettes and long drives.”Coyote and Mule” was a return to the green shed’s four track recording. His soon to be released “Troubadour” is a double-album ode to his wife and to his marriage.

rickoLus is not your usual singer/songwriter. His music comes from a place that is deep, thoughtful and honest. The only annoyance with his live performance is how easily he pulls it all off, without a worry in the world.

+ MORE LOCALS TBA!

Monday Thru Friday We Groove

On The Scene with Tracey Stones

Big Jim Jams a Trio of Gigs this Week

Big Jim Kohler was busy with jams and jives this week. Our local bluesman was found around town with his guitar in hand three times last week.

Blues at the Brown Pelican

While I am busy teaching people about blogging on Monday nights at Pamlico Community College, my best blues buddy, Big Jim is holding class on the carpet at The Brown Pelican. Music plays from 7-9 pm and the jam starts after the first set. Feel free to come out and join the fun this week or any Monday night. We have really been having a natural ball! This fun weekly offering kicked off in February and had brought some of the best Monday nights this town has ever seen!

Mid Week City Stage Blues

If the midweek blues grab you, just make a break for it and join us at The City Stage New Bern, where Big Jim Kohler Blues Band does it again, each week 7-9 pm. Offering the good blues and sharing the grooves, this is always a fun way to bust up the work week, with great music and fun. The City Stage also serves food and are committed to offering live entertainment most nights of the week.

ArtWalk Offerings

The final place I found Big Jim sharing the blues was last night at ArtWalk. Sitting on his stool outside the Black Cat Shoppe, he was poised and ready as anyone could be, to entertain the town during the monthly town event! “Banging on that guitar for over 30 years,”  Big Jim has crawled back from a near-death experience not quite two years ago,  has remained sober and is getting healthier and stronger every day. Currently seeking funds for a new CD, I would ask you to consider investing some money here, as a music supporter. To support Big Jim Kohler and his next recording by visit Big Jim on Kickstarter.

Next week Big Jim Kohler has another trio of gigs. He will be seen jamming at the Brown Pelican on Monday 7-9 pm, offering his blues to the Grand Opening of The Garage, 1209 Highway 70 in James City on Friday; and on Saturday you can find him at BrUtopia live from 7-10 pm. Big Jim Returns to the City Stage for his Wednesday engagement, on Wednesday, March 20, 2019.

While I was rocking my blues away,  I let this gypsy woman, Jelisa, give me some advice. It was a great time last night for ArtWalk at The BCS with Big Jim jamming, local artist Amber Gibson, showing her pieces, and tarot reader Jelisa offering free, three card readings.  If you are looking for a fun shop to browse and shop; stop by The Black Cat Shoppe.

Mad Fiddler Offers Dinner Show Downtown

IMG_9707 (2).JPG

Captain Ratty’s Seafood & Steakhouse is the latest to add live music to the menu. You can enjoy dinner and live music each Thursday evening, from 6-9 pm in the piano bar on the second floor of the iconic downtown restaurant.

IMG_9771 (2).JPG

One of the things I rather like about this new feature is, the fact that we are seeing acts that are not often found around town. On Thursday we were treated to the talents of Jason Addams. Known best as The Mad Fiddler, this player offers lots of familiar songs with a unique spin on every song he offers. He hails from the Crystal Coast region and spent some time jamming with Big Drink Music Company until he moved out on his own. He started offering solo shows and DJ services a few years ago. In the latter parts of 2016, his solo project began focusing on awareness of the dying arts in the public schools.

IMG_9762.JPG

Addams says on his site, “Currently, my passion for music and playing the violin continues, as my services now include DJ private events, plan the music for weddings and DJ. Also slideshow and power-point presentations, teaching music and violin lessons, and gig locally with local talent in the area.” Father to a toddler, this Mad Fiddler keeps busy teaching lessons to and sharing songs at gigs around the region. Find him on Facebook and visit his website by clicking on the link highlighted above.
