The Great Trent River Raft Race has a history in our town that dates back many decades ago. Like with many things in history, what was once old becomes new again. This year, the old race made a come back in the community and great fun was had by all. Our residents gathered on the land, as well as on the river to watch not just the Flotilla that kicked off the event just after 11 am, but also, the many races that took place throughout the day as well. In total, there were four races on the day and four winners crowned.
The event took place at Union Point Park and boasted a great many local business vendors, food trucks, information center and several nonprofits including RCS who’s booth was being manned by the Peace Soldier himself, Bobby Hurff.
Besides food and fun vendors, there were raft races and awesome local music! The music got rocking at 11 am with the Pamlico rockers Saltwater Gold, who kicked things off while I was still compiling Saturday’s blog. For those looking for that popular band this weekend, you will find them rocking the Croaker Festival in Oriental, NC. They will be on the main stage at 7:30 pm tonight to close out the first night of that weekend-long festival.
For the full schedule of events be sure to check out the festival website by clicking on this link:

Have you seen the classic rock act, The Wannabees lately? These guys are really rocking to the core. On Saturday, during the high heat of the day, this quartet of rockers offered a fiery set of classic rock tunes to delight the crowd. They did this following a long night of a rocking downtown at Blackbeard’s Triple Play, the Friday night before.
The band is a staple on the New Bern music scene. They have been rocking it for years and just get better with time. Offering all of the classic rock songs you remember from the radio. If you like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Doors, and all the rockers from the 60 and 70’s, then this is the band to check out. They play around the region and are available for festivals, community events, private parties and rocking nights in your venue. They are professional and talented players, that love rocking their weekends away with fans and friends. To keep up with The Wannabees you can find them on Facebook at
The rock n roll continued throughout the afternoon with 3 Day Weekend, the third act taking to the stage at 3 pm. They rocked the crowd with all the familiar classics that the people of this town love.
This classic rock cover band is another fun staple on our local scene. They only get together a few times each year, which helps keep the show fresh and fun. The five-piece band has been rocking for more than a decade.
The next show on tap for the band will be the Rockin on the Rivers Concert Series, brought to us by the New Bern Chamber of Commerce. They will open next month’s concert series that will take place on Friday, July 20, 2018. Sharing the stage with local country crooner Bryan Mayer and local superstars, Parmalee.
The committee that organized this event did a good job of selecting local bands that represent this town. From start to finish they brought familiar bands that offer great rocking music for a feel-good event that inspires a community.
Following the awards ceremony for the many races, the stage was turned over to “The Tallest Man in Country Music”, the Bryan Mayer Band offered a fun 90 minute set of great songs to close out the day. The band has been in high demand, as they’ve stayed local this music season for the many Summer community events found in our area, but they hit the road this week for a quick tour of the Northeast, that takes them to Pennsylvania and New York.
Tonight you can find the country singer live at The Saltwater Grill, 99 W Church St., Swansboro, NC. He will perform an unplugged show in their lounge from 7-10 pm. To keep up with our local country superstar, check him out on Facebook by following this link:
The Hot Buttered Grits is New Bern’s own, original jam band. The five-piece ensemble offers the fun grooves, that always make fans move to the beats. They offer a great mix of original music and jam band favorites like Phish and of course, The Grateful Dead. They always draw a great crowd and they know just what numbers to play to get them up dancing. Most of the band hails from our talented town, with the exception of singing guitarist Howard Longo who makes the journey from Raliegh to rock the crowd.
The band loves playing festivals, private parties and on occasion, they are known to turn the town on its ear, when they come together for their jams. They have no events listed on their band page at this time, but I know they will offer another show on the patio later in the year during the holiday season.
For those looking to groove this weekend, Grits front singer, guitarist, and mandolin player Seth Smith will be joining other music brothers tomorrow night at The Brown Pelican where he is throwing down. Here is what I learned:
“Hey friends, I’m throwing a funky dance party at the Pelican! Come to show off your Dap Dip, Shang A Lang, Kid N Play and the rest your favorite dance moves. I’ll be spinning all the funkiest Soul, R & B, Funk, and Hip Hop hits! Cold weather, hot weather, it doesn’t matter just shake that tail feather!” Music starts at 8 pm and the grooves go til 11 pm. This show is free so come out and dance!
One of the best parts of my job as a blogger is walking into a familiar room with an unknown band rocking the room. This never gets old. Last week it happened again when I walked into the Dirty Bird to meet Magic Man & The 4Rent Band. This is a fun and funky R&B band that comes complete with harmonies and backing vocals. The six-piece band rocked the room with the sounds of soul and funk, that inspire the fun in all that wish to move and groove!
The band plays around the state and is looking to book more gigs this Summer. So, if anyone is looking for a great band that will bring the funk, look no further than this band. They not only offer the great music that fans love, but they also include a mini magic act as part of the show. This not only sets them apart, but it helps them include their audience in ways most bands can’t.
