Monday Is Never Manic With Blues Mania at The Brown Pelican
The Brown Pelican is the popular watering hole that is known for hosting live music five nights a week. Kicking things off with a blues fix is Big Jim Kohler Band who each Monday offers music jams from 7-9:30 PM each week. This popular night brings out many blues admirers and players too. All are welcome to come out and be a part of the fun. The band offers a fun set of Chicago style blues before asking guests to share the stage for more jams that lean into the blues.
Mid Week Blues Break Brings New Faces and Many Bassists
Following a night off, Big Jim and the Band get back to work sharing more jams with more jammers in town. Most Wednesdays, the band can be found on stage at City Stage, sharing the blues and cutting the grooves with special guests.
This past week we saw some new faces and two new bassists who stepped up to jam with the band. First, we met Chiles, a new face on the stage, who shared a few songs before tuning over the bass detail to David Rappaport. Rappaport is the bassist for the new line up of Due East who will be making their debut at The Brown Pelican in a few weeks. Look for them in mid-October.
Along with a couple of new bass players, we featured two harmonicas at one point in the program. Blowing the notes were Gordon Graham and David Sawyer.
The mid-week blues jam offers two hours of blistering blues and rocking grooves that bring fans to Chicago and back in two hours time. The BJKBB will be there each week until September 11, when the DownEast Folk Art Society brings a show to town. More on that as we grow closer to the event.
Thursday Yields More Blues From the Road as We Head to The House for Woolly’s Big Blues Jam
Woolly & The Wingnutz are the house band at The House in Durham where each Thursday, players gather to join the jams. This week Woolly requested that Big Jim come early and play with the Wingnutz. This weekly jam welcomes many players from the Triangle region and always offers a bouquet of talent. Many of these players are friends we met along the way in our travels to The Blue Note Grill.
Speaking of the blues supper club, they will be hosting their annual blues competition, next week for The Road to Memphis. This annual competition is judged and selects one winner from each category to go to Memphis to represent The Triangle Blues Society at The International Blues Challenge at the beginning of 2020. The Big Jim Kohler Band is registered to compete. I will be on hand to stream live from the competition.
Not long after the competition, Woolly & his Wingnutz will be coming to New Bern to rock your blues away. on the deck at Persimmons Restaurant on Saturday, September 14, 2019. That show will start at 6:30 pm.

We Welcome The Weekend with More Blues and Rockin Grooves
Things got underway between Tracey Stones Productions and Persimmons Restaurant after the manager, Meghan Margarum reached out to hire Big Jim for a show. I replied that he would be available in late August and that I would love to meet about bringing more music to the beautiful venue. After a few messages and a meeting, it was agreed that we can work together in bringing talent to the waterfront restaurant that overlooks the Neuse River.
Last night it was the debut for the Big Jim Kohler Band on the deck. Bringing their talents to make the music were Big Jim on guitar and vocals, Chris Buttitta on bass, Mike Ferrara on drums and there is vocal spotlight which shines also when Kathy Kohler grabs the mic to belt her blues. They set up outside on the deck for the first set, but as the storm set in during the break, we broke down and moved the party upstairs and inside. Tonight you can find the boys rocking their blues at Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Wilmington NC. Music starts at 8 PM. Next week they will be back on the Bear City clock and doing what they do about town. Be sure to be a part of the fun soon. We love seeing you.
Closing Out My Week Of Blues with Good Rock
I closed out the week with the rocking fun grooves of Stairwell. This Greenville-based band has been creating sounds for 13 years and have two original discs available for purchase. They also travel with lots of merchandise, from t-shirts to jewelry, hats, stickers and more. The band plays a variety of cover songs that run the gamut from pop to rock. Of all the songs they offer, it is the original works that truly impress me. Here is a sample of what I mean.
The band keeps their events up to date on Facebook so if you wish to keep in the know, be sure to check them out on Facebook by following this link: Stairwell. Their next show will bring them to Da Bayou Wilson next Friday night with music being offered at 10 PM. Next Saturday the band returns to their home base to rock Tiebreakers Sports Bar and Grill, Greenville, with music again starting at 10 PM.

Groove-laden New Orleans boogie, deeply soulful ballads and rollicking Gulf Coast blues courtesy of the incredible Marcia Ball.
Marcia Ball, the 2018 Texas State Musician Of The Year, has won worldwide fame and countless fans for her ability to ignite a full-scale roadhouse rhythm and blues party every time she takes the stage. Her rollicking Texas boogies, swampy New Orleans ballads and groove-laden Gulf Coast blues have made her a one-of-a-kind favorite with music lovers all over the world.
With SHINE BRIGHT (available April 20th), Ball set out to, in her words, “Make the best Marcia Ball record I could make.” In doing so, she has put together the most musically substantial, hopeful and uplifting set of songs of her five-decade career. Produced by Steve Berlin (Los Lobos) and recorded in Texas and Louisiana, Shine Bright contains twelve songs (including nine originals), ranging from the title track’s rousing appeal for public and private acts of courage to the upbeat call to action of Pots And Pans, a song inspired by renowned Texas political writer and humorist Molly Ivins. From the humorous advice of Life Of The Party to the poignantly optimistic World Full Of Love, the intensity of Ball’s conviction never wavers while, simultaneously, the fun never stops. Shine Bright is exactly the album Ball set out to make.

With A Calendar Function Giving This Site A Daily Boost Offers GOOD News For Readers and Advertisers
This offers readers a resourceful tool to finding music in their area, all around the state, every day of the week. I am committing myself to the new routine of finding new gigs to list and add to the calendars daily. Committed to adding a minimum of ten a day that means adding 70 gigs a week to these calendars.
Bands and venues are welcome to invite me to their events on Facebook or via email at firstname.lastname@example.org. There is no cost to be listed on occasion, but please understand just like free music is not free, this free promotional service is not free either. It costs me a great amount of time.
If you are a busy band or a thriving music venue, I want you! We can create a calendar for you and keep you in the zone! $250 a year and you can have all your events added to a personal calendar widget right here in the music zone. Advertisers will be responsible for providing the event’s content.
Beside offering calendar options, NCMZ.LIVE also can create an active link for your website, or social media pages. Which also offers some live coverage for your live music events. For five years we have been building this site together and thanks to your suggestions and my commitment it keeps getting better. THANK YOU!
I will still bring you live coverage of the music scene around us in the random fashion we have become accustomed to in these five years of reporting. Without your support since September, none of this would be possible. So a big shout out and thank you to everyone who has extended a hand, offered a tip, bought me a meal or a beer, I love you all for the love you have shared with me! And every time I think I have to quit, you really have stepped up to help me keep the beats! Together we are building an awesome product that we can be proud of as we share it with our friends.
