Meeting music makers truly helps keep my life interesting! I am grateful for all of the stories I hear and the music I get to share with my readers. Thank you for being here today! Let’s take the journey together!
We have many great players that hail from the Crystal Coast area. This becomes evident anytime I head out to an open mic hosted by Tiffany Elaine. This hardworking country girl does so much for her music community. She truly is a girl after my own heart. Interestingly enough it was at an open mic in New Bern, NC I met the budding entertainer. Since then, she has gone to Nashville to record, been on the radio several times and stays very busy promoting music in her own special way!
Currently, Tiffany is hosting three open mic events each week. She can be found in the Jacksonville area hosting open mics for Nick’s Blacksheep Tavern, which happens the first Monday of each month. Tiffany hosts an open mic event every other Tuesday at Cru Bar and Wine Store in Beaufort and then at Crystal Coast Brewery in Atlantic Beach, the opposing Tuesday. This singer offers an open mic every other Wednesday at Promise’ Land Market in Morehead City and then heads to Jacksonville, NC for the opposing Wednesday, to host the open mic night for North Street Cafe. If Thursday’s work better, be sure to look her up at Shortway Brewing Co in Newport every other Thursday.
To be quite honest with you, if I was a new artist on the scene, I would be reading this blog and showing up at this ambition singers’ open mic events! She’s a class act who knows how to host a jam. The results often are positive for the performers as well, since the acts are often booked by the establishments for future dates. This is not always the case, but it is a great way to expose yourself and get your music out there. So pack up the gig bag and meet me at the open mic!
I almost always meet new players when I attend her events and that was true again on Wednesday when I heard Kelsey Krumroy offer a couple of original tracks he wrote. I also met Fernando Rivera, a talented player, and songwriter, who recently teamed up with Tiffany Elaine for collaboration on a new project, a duo act named Now or Never. Though I didn’t have the pleasure of chilling with Elaine on this trip, she has stayed tuned in via my live stream and kept me informed of her news. The duo has been writing and will soon be recording her latest song, “Waves”! More on that as it becomes available.
The singer-songwriter and open mic hostess with the mostest is first and foremost a mom. Sometimes rocking the single mom life means, running things from the crib while good friends like Steve Mehan, who helps with the list and Ashford Ward step up for the introductions. Teamwork makes the dream work and the end result, Tiffany Elaine is a great team leader even when absent. Follow her on Facebook to see where she is hosting the next open mic night in your neighborhood.
I’ll be attending more of her events myself, as it is a great way for me to meet new players and hear them as they grow on the scene. Open jams are a great way to meet new players and hear new talents. It is also a great vibe when creative people come together and gel. I find it fascinating for my writer’s brain!
In case you missed the news all week, it is the 60th Annual Big Rock Fishing Competition, happening all week in Morehead City. This is a serious fishing competition which boasts a top prize of $2 million. With so many in town for the week-long event that wraps up today and it is one of the town’s most thriving weeks.
Offering tourists so many great places to eat and drink, one of the mid-week events during the Big Rock week is a pub crawl, that tours patrons around the town. This is a fun-filled week bringing many tourists through the area, I headed to the coast in search of all things local and familiar, as I looked to groove with the music makers.
When I saw that Hank Barbee was shucking out the tunes for the Shuckin’ Shack Oyster Bar, 707 Arendell Ave, Morehead City, NC, I thought I would pop in on the singer-songwriter. I was delighted to walk in and find Barbee rocking the blues flavors with harmonica man Steve Burkett. This was the first time I caught this duo arrangement! It was quite a delight! Tonight you can find Hank Barbee live at The Icehouse Waterfront Restaurant in Swansboro, NC. He will play the music from 9 pm until the midnight hour.
Getting back to where the article began, for those who are not aware of The Shuckin’ Shack, it is a great establishment tucked away on the main drag. Be sure to stop out for live music and great food each and every Wednesday night. This week you can catch New Bern’s own Country crooner, Bryan Mayer live from 6-9 pm.
Turning our attention back to the artist, Barbee has been a friend to me since I hit the scene. We met about three years ago at The Cru Bar in Beaufort and have worked together on promotions projects for the artist since that meeting. One of the things he is helping me with now is my Community Concerts in the Park.
Along the way, I was inspired by many players to build a healthier music environment for our local players. I love bars and music venues. I am, in fact, a big proponent of such establishments. However, I have also in doing this blog, see the greater need for building healthier environments for entertainers and audiences. Music is a healing property for a wounded soul. Many people who are hurting are also in recovery and won’t go to bars and clubs to enjoy music. Others have families and can’t take the kids to shows late at night.
Having said that, I am hosting concerts in the community park where I live, in Fairfield Harbor. These events are for the local residents of the community. It extends to them the invitation of packing a picnic and coming out for an afternoon concert. It’s asked that attendees donate $10 to support the music I bring! The first event in May was quite wonderful!
The second event will happen this Sunday at Red Sail Park for Father’s Day and we are featuring Hank Barbee. The performance will be from 4-6 pm so if you have friends in the Harbour plan a visit this Sunday and come dance with Hank Barbee and the Dust Parade.
On Thursday night I headed out to Mac Daddy’s, 130 Golfin Dolphin Dr.,
Cape Carteret, NC, to see how things were going in their lounge. They are offering live acoustic acts in the lounge on Thursday nights. Justin Castellano was on the stage making music when I popped in this week. This talented stringer is always up to something good. If you have not heard him play yet, be sure to make time this Summer to catch his groove. He is a skilled master when it comes to fretwork! He has a unique style with hints of classical overlays on familiar favorites. This is music done right. Tonight the stringer and singer will be offering the dinner show at Bistro By the Sea, 4031 Arendell Ave., Morehead City, NC. Music plays from 7-10 pm. This is a great pick for a romantic night with the one you love.
For those in around the Cape Carteret area, next week be sure to stop in to meet Jerry Scott who offers the music of the 70’s and 80’s you love. Check him out in the lounge on Thursday, June 20 from 7-10 pm.
Adam Hill came to New Bern on Friday night to rock the Deck Party at the DoubleTreeby Hilton, 100 Middle Street, New Bern, NC. This southern rock gentleman is one of the finest talents on our scene today. Hill picked up the guitar at a young age and has held tight to the strings ever since. He honed his skills through his teenage years and life has offered him much material for writing. His songs are some of the best I have heard. He draws you in with the music and but his lyrics will captivate you as well.
The Adam Hill Band keeps busy playing mostly around the state while looking for new territories to explore. This weekend the band was scheduled to play at Circa 1810 Bar at the Harvey Mansion but was called away for a show in West Virginia tonight. The band will be opening a show in Logan tonight at 7 pm for another Lenoir County-based band, Second Helping.
The two bands have teamed up to do a few shows this summer. Next month they will hit the road following their show at 2018 Bernaroo Music And Arts Festival on Friday, July 20, 2018. They are the opening act for the festival this year and they will get us off right with a rocking original set. Be sure to get your tickets early for that event, which will happen at the New Bern Farmers Market on South Front Street, New Bern, NC. Gates will open at 5 pm.
Trent Cadillac’s Footloose on the Neuse Concert being presented by The New Bern Parks and Recreation Dept. offered another fun show for New Bern residents last night. The Raleigh based Soul Psychedelic Orchestra came to call for the citizens that gathered.
This band is nothing but a ton of fun and high energy. The seven-piece outfit offers three front singers and four rocking players keeping the backbeats going. They bring a party to every show! They also bring the funk and soul grooves that get the feet moving and hips shaking. I love that we have a free concert series in the park, bringing the fun for all to enjoy. There are vendors out there offering food each month, and there is a lawn plenty big enough for you to bring a chair too.
The next event will offer the classic rock sounds of Jukebox Revolver on Friday, June 29, 2018. Music starts at 6:30 and the good times go until 9 pm. Please take note of the schedule and make a plan to catch a show this summer.
Checking things out around the rest of the region, I ask my Facebook followers each week where we can go to hear them play. This is what they said this week
