Live Music Always Makes the Good Times Roll

Strung Together Plays Under the Stars

The tent came down and the beat went on with Strung Together performing their eclectic set of songs for fans and friends. Everyone gathered under the stars at Circa 1810 Bar at The Harvey Mansion, 221 S Front St. The New Bern based family band always pleases the crowd. They offered several sets of songs after ArtWalk last Friday night!

This family band is a growing sound with the addition of a new drummer, classmate of Abigail and family friend, Nick Eickhoff. Already familiar and popular in New Bern, the band will be a part of the 10th Annual BOCO Traditional Music Festival at The Turnage Theater. The festival happens throughout the day and the band performs at 4 pm. Be sure to catch them if you have your tickets!  For more info on the event check out these links:

More Banjo Abounds in New Bern

Ellis Dyson and The Shambles came to town to kick the weekend into high gear as they turned  The Brown Pelican on its ear with their high energy fusion infused bluegrass and folk sounds. Brought to us by the good folks at GEM Productions, the band always draws a crowd when they come to town.

The full band features strings of all sorts, including upright bass, banjo, guitar, and mandolin as well as many horns to fill in the sound.

To keep up with the high energy band you can find them on Facebook!

Rock Rounds Out the Week at

Live at The City Laundry

Several area bands known for bringing the rock gave up their show at Live at the City Laundry last week. When I stopped in Weight of Whispers was weighing in with their songs. The hard rock outfit hails from Wilmington NC. They opened the night with a great set of full-tilt rock to warm up the crowd.

Also offering a great set of new rock to the bill was New Bern’s own Stairwell who are out promoting a new self-titled release available on Spotify. Tonight the band will be rocking the Market Street Pub, 143 N Market St., Washington, NC. Music starts at 10 pm and they rock til closing at 2 am.

Closing out the night of hardcore rock sounds was the fantastic Bridge to Breakdown who always bring a full energy, full rock show to the stage for their fans to enjoy. To catch them at their next show in their hometown of Jacksonville check the info here:

Saturday Night Specials:

Bites & Blues Offered in Morehead City

The Carolina Swamp Dogs were the first featured band on the menu at Southern Salt Seafood Company and Waterfront Restaurant, 701 Evans St., Morehead City, NC for the 6th Annual Bite & Blues Event which features bands and venues throughout the city.

Though it sounded amazing, I went to just one place and enjoyed a great meal featuring all you can eat shrimp which were amazing dipped in butter or in cocktail sauce.

Adding to the vibe and good flavor was the trio of retired Marine Veterans based in Jacksonville, NC where they originally bonded at Camp Lejeune. With their recent date at Circa 1810 Bar at the Harvey Mansion being rained out, it was time to check in with the blues trio, whom I will be featuring in the upcoming issue of Folks Journal. You can read more about the trio on May 1, 2018, by checking out:

The Blues Is Alright Always

Since signing up to offer a blues column for Folks Journal, I have been inspired to check out some of the great rooms we have in NC hosting open blues jams. So this week, I called Fairlight Moriah and Freddie Scungio to see if they’d like to ride down to Wilmington,  to check out the Cape Fear Blues Society’s weekly blues jam, the oldest in the state, which takes place each Tuesday at The Rusty Nail.

Much like she does everywhere we go, Fairlight Moriah brought the room to their knees as she belted out a few classics. including “Three O’Clock In The Morning Blues,” “Stormy Monday.” and even the shuffle of “Rock Me Baby!”

Currently, the singer is holding rehearsals for a few gigs coming up in the weeks ahead. Though she was slotted to perform tonight with Randy Moore for a fundraiser at The Flame, that event to benefit the Coastal Women’s Shelter was canceled late last week.
